Title: [Road Trip] Catch of the day: Vanguard by Zaccaria
Post by: ckong on November 21, 2009, 10:12:18 AM
Nice day for a trip in the country.

Statistics:

Date: 21 November 2009
Author: ckong
Target: Vanguard – Zaccaria licence (Original by SNK) http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10293
Trip: Netherlands - Belgium - The Netherlands
Total length: 624 km and 12 hours (including a familiy visit).

Today Level42 organized a small group visit to a specific warehouse in Belgium. The participants were Muerto, Superully, Level42, jcp and I.

I had my mind set on Vanguard and I was lucky enough to catch this game, made by Zaccaria. http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=3011

Muerto and Superully also got a very nice game, they will undoubtedly report about their new purchase. JCP had a bit of bad luck, the game he was after was not in the desired state. Next time more luck, jcp   :-\

The Vanguard cab is fortunately still in pretty decent condition, pics and a more detailed road trip report will follow soon.

OK, here is the road trip report.

Yesterday I left home at 10.45 AM, to meet Level42 at his house around 12.30 PM.

The weather was looking good, I knew this was going to be another nice roadtrip.

Because there was a traffic jam on my scheduled route, I took a little detour, which brought me through Arnhem.

The usual coffee at a gas station.

I arrived at Level42’s house at 12.45, and soon after that Muerto also got there. In fact he already arrived at 11.15 AM, but because the long drive he had, he took a little nap in his van. We were scheduled to leave for the warehouse at around 13.00 PM, but due to some Berzerk arrangements to be made, we actually left at 14.00 PM

OK, still on route.

We arrived at the warehouse at 15.30 PM, Superully was already there (for just a few minutes). A few minutes later jcp and his friend also got there. So a group picture had to be made (I’m behind the camera).

Who is who? The warehouse owner was also there, he opened the door and we walked inside. Here are a few pics, not too much, Level42 did already show some nice ones a few weeks ago.

But things had changed a bit since Level42’s visit. There has been a German raid in the meanwhile, and they took almost all pinball tables. Which is a shame because I would like to have seen them. In general there were a lot of generic cabs, but also still some very nice dedicated Zaccaria and Atari cabs (quite some (super) break outs, a canyon bomber and some others). Because the pinball tables were gone, the warehouse owner had re-arranged the freed space the last few weeks, and a lot of cabs were now almost or completely not accessible any longer, like the Taito cabs.

Still, I found my target cab, Vanguard, which is a great game, and superully and muerto didn’t leave empty handed also.
Here are the catches of the day (I also got a few nice VGA arcade monitors for some projects which I’m working on).

We left the warehouse at about 17.45 PM. We planned to eat together somewhere at a Burger King or so alongside the highway, but unfortunately I lost sight of the other two cars. I’m sure they had a nice meal together while I drove home, where I arrived at 23.00 PM (had a break for a family visit) and 624 km’s later. It was a long day and a bit tiring (I’m not complaining, superully and muerto had a much longer travel today), and it was worth it.

I unpacked the car this morning, did a bit of a clean on the outside (dirty as hell she was) and here she is:

Of course there is the usual damage on the CPO (I hate cigarettes!), but not too much.

I don’t think that I can do much about the CPO but a good clean. I will probably repaint the front panel and the front of the CPO. The side art still looks very good after all these years; there are a few tiny woodchips, but I will restore that Bruno’s way, with a piece of cloth and matching paint. And I will repaint the base of the cab. The marquee and the glass bezel are in excellent condition. The paper bezel around the monitor has a few cracks, a bit of glue will do.

On the technical side, I did take a short look inside, this cab is DIRTY!!! There is no game PCB in it, so I don’t have the opportunity to test it yet. But the monitor is a very common Hantarex MTC 900, it won’t be  a problem to get a cap kit etc. And the joystick needs new parts.

I will not start working on this cab after I have done the Centipede refurbishment, probably somewhere in winter.

i love that vanguard cab, eric! it's a piece of art - or should i say SHE's a piece of art. somehow, all your cabs are female  ;)

All beautiful things are female, aren't they?

Yeps, I use to think that all my cabinets are ... female, except maybe the cockpits ... a Star Wars cockpit for example... sounds more ... virile  ;D
Title: Re: [Road Trip] Catch of the day: Vanguard by Zaccaria
Post by: level42 on November 23, 2009, 06:30:54 PM
Incidentally I always refer to my SW cockpit as a SHE.
She's a ship.
A spaceship.
Ships are always a she :D

I think the Berzerks are DEFINITLY a HE.
Ully and Muerto will know why  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

But apart from that rather "weird to touch" joystick, the entire cab and artwork shouts HE.

Could be fun to make a list (in another thread).

Centi, is a she because of the pastel colors in the game and of course it was programmed by a woman.

PAC-MAN is a HE, MS. PAC-MAN a SHE, but what is BABY PAC-MAN?  ;)

She's a beauty indeed, the sun really makes the colors come out !
I LOVE the colors selected. I LOVE the artwork. I LOVE that cab. I would definitly would have picked it up if I had the space.

And Vanguard is a brilliant game !

I'm glad that it's now in my country and "in reach" to go have a couple of games in the future !!!

Erik, what material is that CP ? I can't really remember, it looks like a thick plastic (or maybe a plexi cover?).

Maybe it's possible to sand out the cigarette burns. I've got a special kit (Micro Mesh) for that kind of work. Worked really well on my Galaxian bezel.

It's thick plastic. Thanks for the tip, I will try Micro Mesh. Were to find it?

I bought it at http://www.modelbrouwers.nl but I can't seem to find it on their site now.

This looks similar but has even finer grid nrs.: http://www.modelbrouwers.nl/shop/catalog/schuurfolie-ultrafijn-tot-grit-60000-10-x-20-cm-p-2080.html?osCsid=ae1be742b4408286ba32b2ea21357623

This is the factory's site:
http://www.micro-surface.com/

This is not the kit I got but this seems to be aimed at your goal:
http://micro-surface.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=273_188_189&products_id=78

It's not cheap, but you can use it over and over and over again. Using wet is the best way. It does take some patience, but it's worth it.

and then there are always companies who can easily reproduce the same kind of plexi with all the holes in the right places!

but that kit seems to be a good way to go first - i have to try that on my breakout bezel one day. thx

IIRC the CPO itself is a thick plastic with the art printed right on. There's no plexi covering it.

That Canadian stuff looks interesting to remove scratches from glass !

This is the Canadian factory:

Uh, no. Never used Novus. Novus is more a liquid polishing solution. Micro Mesh is real sanding stuff but with such fine grain that it really gets the fine scratches out.
You can use it for years if you don't do entire Bezels every week.

I have a feeling Novus won't get out cigarette burns but the micro mesh will.

As was said, the art is printed on the back so you don't want to mess it up any worse than it is. Test it out before hand.

You could also just leave it as is. Probably aren't many arcade games that don't have cig burns on them - part of the real arcade experience :-)

Paul.

as far as i know, novus has three different levels of treatment, one just polished, one removes light scratches and one is for deep scratches. haven't tried it out myself though! i've been planning on getting this FOREVER, but then there's always games coming in between  ;)

True. But if the art is printed on the back there shouldn't be any big problems trying something on the top right ?

Only in so far as it leaving the surface all yucky in a way that's hard to get back to normal. Some cleaning materials can make the plastic cloudy, rough or dull.

A very nice artwork (like the Breakout & the SuperBreakout) for a very colorized cab.

A few words about me and the roadtrip !
As ckong has written, a bad roadtrip for me : the Power Drift sitdown cab doesn't work at all (it should have worked except for the screen, and without the screen, as I know very well the game, I can say that the game doesn't work ... even the mechanical parts, and that's the number one problem for me, it was the condition to take the cab or not).

To sum up :
-Departure : saturday, 8:15, Nancy town
-Arrival to the warehouse : saturday, 15:30
-Departure from the warehouse : saturday, 17:00 after having seen all the roadtripers (Ckong, Muerto, Superully, Level42 : a big thanks to all, it's always a pleasure to meet such arcade fans).
-Arrival : sunday, 12:30, Nancy town (yes, a few problems, see my good friend, the van's dynamo!)

Anyway, despite a roadtrip for nothing, it was interesting to see the warehouse (a special big thanks to Level42 of course).
