Wow... I've never seen the MEGA CD version of the game, until now ::)
See that video
Let's Play: starblade (sega cd) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU7KXJxlWgM).
OK, it's not in full screen, and the enemies (computed in real time) are all in ... wireframe and the background is just a movie played via the CD but ...not too bad for this old Sega 8)

About a week ago I followed a PAL copy on eBay, it sold for 80€.

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I found out something interesting. Technosoft (of Thunder Force fame) was outsourced to do the Sega CD port of Starblade via Telenet! Pretty interesting stuff. I found it out via a tweet from GDRI (Game Developer Research Institute) and the response to it: https://twitter.com/gdri/status/271236022564683776 (https://twitter.com/gdri/status/271236022564683776)

I've just checked the 'Telenet Japan' company on wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telenet_Japan).
Telenet Japan Co., Ltd. (株式会社日本テレネット Kabushiki-gaisha Nihon Terenetto?) was a Japanese video game and software developer founded in October 1983 by Kazuyuki Fukushima. The company was also known as Nippon Telenet (or Nihon Telenet). The company was best known for the Valis series as well as its Wolfteam, Laser Soft and RiOT divisions ( the former of which created Tales of Phantasia, the first game in the Tales series). The company's North American subsidiary, Renovation Products was eventually acquired by Sega. The company closed its doors on October 25, 2007.[1] Currently, Sunsoft has acquired Telenet's entire software library, with plans of re-releasing old titles for Virtual Console or remaking them.[2]
Although -according wiki- they published Mega CD games...
Mega-CD
Cyborg 009
Sol-Feace
Cobra Command
Time Gal
Road Avenger
Cosmic Fantasy Stories
Earnest Evans
...no mention to Starblade?

I have the US Sega CD version of Starblade. I found it more challenging to play than the Playstation version.
