Title: Star Wars cockpit... operation back to life ^^
Post by: DarthNuno on December 29, 2005, 11:31:53 AM
Ok first of all, don't miss out the HUGE roadtrip done to bring back the cab' from UK to Belgium  8)  8)  8)

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/roadtrips/Dragon's%20Lair%202%20-%20SWC%20-%20banner.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=73.0)

A must see !!!

So the cab' is empty :

- No XY (vector) monitor
- No PCB
- No power supply

This game is one of my all time favorite games , and each time I'm playing on my mame cab, I play Star Wars with the trackball...

Now, I've got the real arcade cab' and I really want to play Star Wars with the flight yoke, inside the cockpit.

I know XY vector monitors are quite rare to found nowdays, especially outside the States  :?  Same problem for a working pcb  :?

So I'm starting the quest for xy monitor & pcb but I'll put a raster monitor, and emulates the PCB with mame  , as I said, I don't want to wait severals month to have true XY monitor + pcb and watch an unplayable arcade game like Star Wars   8)

I'm lucky  :P  Yesterday I've found this :

  25" tv, second hand of course, for only 60€  :D

Ok, I'm removing all the useless parts

...really lucky  :D  This TV model includes all the pot' needed to set the picture size, like a true arcade monitor  8)

... frightening isn't it    :D

Yes, I've to cut the sides, or it won't fit ...

Ok, now the size is ok  8)

Here's the 'monster' open :

...the bezel.. I've to clean it  :?

Hey, by the way, I didn't test the TV  :?  :?  :?  Let's see if it's working  :?:
Well, I'm sure the seller won't get back that 'half' of tv now  :D

Let's plug a game cube, and of course Rogue Squadron

:D  OK, the TV is fine  8)  Let's see how to fix the TV inside the cab...

... and I place the tube inside the cockpit  8)

Yeezzzzz, the image is really good  :P  :P  :P

Now have a look at all this stuf running in this VIDEO

https://www.dragonslairfans.com/starwars/cockpit.wmv

The monitor is not fixed yet... this will be the next step...    8)  8)  8)

Ok, let's remove the monitor and see how the flight yoke is fixed...

It's easy... only few screws 8)

...exactly two from the back, and three more in the front... I remove the yoke  in order to clean it, and prepare the 'hack'

And here we go with the CRT fixation inside the cab.

I'll use pre-drilled common metal pieces...

I'm lucky... the distance between two holes fit perfectly  8)

Cool, I've an easy access to the TV...

... and I also found a good place for the computer :

...removing the marquee :

Two speakers... behind the player head, inside the cockpit :

... and two others speakers under the seat :

Opppss... a lot of dust... :?

Let's clean up a bit...  8)

OK, the next step is : How to use original Star Wars yoke on a computer  :?:  :?:  :?:

I 've founded the solution on the 1UP's ARCADE website here : http://www.1uparcade.com

I'll hack a Microsoft Dual Strike Strike joysitck

Following the GREAT tutorial from the 1UP website, here we go

Yeps, I pick up one on ebay

...opening the 'thing'...

... the 'brain'...

...the hard part is here : removing the pot'
 8)

... The flight yoke... is ready to rise again

I put everything together, and if it works, I'll do a better job...

YYYeeeehhhaaaaaawwwww... it works  :D  :D  :D  :D

Ok, so I arrange all the wires properly ...

I've to remove the monitor, in order to fix the flight yoke unit...

... and...

It's still working

Let's try something... mhhhhh    up & right ?

Yeah Baby Yeah

I've now to prepare another computer, because the one I would like to use has some problem with ... the USB port  :?

Stay tuned  :D  :D  :D

2 years and half later... back on this  :P :P :P

I really love my Star Wars cockpit, fully playable and very fun to play... but now I would like to start the aesthetic restoration. As you will see, there is still a lot of work to do on this one

The plexiglass roof of the cockpit is broken, see

Opps... sorry for the dust on pictures  :P

OK, now let's see how to remove it.

Three screws on the top...

...now removed :

2 x 2 more screws here :

Three screws on that metal plate, on the marquee...

...and 3 screws under the marquee :

After removing the marquee :

A first screw here :

...and the second one :

...and this is it. Now I can easily remove the roof :

The damages  :

It shouldn't be a a difficult job for a plexiglass specialist : cutting a sheet of plexiglass and bend it proper... it just need the right tools to do it.

You can do this yourself. Just make sure you can get hold of Polycarbonate (with the right color - mostly this color is called PC Smoke). PC can be bend cold (you do not have to heatup).
With PMMA (Acryl) you have to heatup the plate otherwise it will break.

Visually there is no difference between Polycarbonate and PMMA ... so choose PC. It's also very cheap and can be bought everywhere (Gamma, Brico, ....)

Wow... I never heard about 'Polycarbonate'  :o ??? What is that exactly ? Do you have some picture of that ?
Thanks for tip... it would be an issue maybe ?

OK, I finally have access again to the cab  :P

Well, I mean I can see again ... the dark side of the cockpit

I call it 'dark side' because that side was usually hidden. In fact that side uses to be against the wall. That explains the scratches  >:(

Closer...

But the worst is ... the water damages on the base  :ghost:

Mwwwell, go back to the light side :

The side arts are ok for me, but some water damages too  :-\

There is also some rest of scotch tape ?

Back on this  ;)

Well, for some reason the old CRT I've putted inside that cockpit doesn't work anymore  :-[

Why did I put a CRT for emulating a vector game such Star Wars  ? Well I guess it was an easy solution at the time and I didn't think too much ... I was young  ::) ;D

I'm not able to find a true color vector monitor here in Europe... and it would be a miracle if I find one *working* & a working Star Wars board *working*  :ghost: ... I don't want to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to import an 'untested' or 'maybe working for 1 hour' vector monitor + Star Wars 'maybe working' boards  I still keep an eye for that of course...

So I'll continue the emulation way... because I'm really using that cab for playing the game (in my all time top ten). This cockpit is not a collector item... it lives ... I want It play the game when I want  ;)
In addition some great progress has been done regarding the vector emulation  ;) Check this out : AAE (http://pages.suddenlink.net/aae/).

I already tried this emulator with Asteroid and the result is *amazing*. I plan of course to test it with Star Wars, because that game is now  working in that emulator  ::) :P :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

So... let's remove that 15Khz CRT

and replace it by a 31Khz monitor, that will draw better vectors than the previous 15Khz  ;)

I have the boards, but I'm not sure how to test them without a vector monitor. Do you know?
I also have a full set of original manuals for the cockpit.

It's time to replace the old & broken roof. Starting from this

The old Plexiglas roof (top part) and the new one :

The old & broken Plexiglas roof (back part) and the new one :

Bye bye  :D

And here's the cockpit with the ULTRA LIMITED new roof (top + back) repro ... made in Amsterdam Rotterdam  ::) ;). (Europe) ... only 2 set in the world !!! One for me, the other for Level42  8)

From the inside  :D

That black color on the Plexiglas is just wonderful  :) :-*

A general view

Next step... to repair all the water damages and the 'Dark Side' of this cockpit (the last picture shows the 'Light Side' of it... not as damaged than the other one).

HAH, glad I see you got them installed OK !

They look pretty dark ! A bit darker then I had expected. (Not too dark I hope ?)

How did they fit ?
How do you like the bends ?

I do have to say you hurt my feelings a bit though:
They're definitely NOT from AMSTERdam but from ROTTERdam. I guess you don't care much, but me, being born in Rotterdam, having spend my entire youth there and still living close to it, Amsterdam is like the arch-enemy. It's just one of those things... :D
I don't like Amsterdam and that's mildly put..... I won't elaborate here but it just sucks :D

The only good thing I've ever found in Amsterdam was................my Star Wars Cockpit !!!! ;) :D

O well, it's not _that_ important of course ;) The important thing is that you hopefully are satisfied with it !

No problem at all. Perfect match for me  :)

OK, let's bring the cockpit from the v1 into the V2, because I need space to work around it.

First mission, remove the remains of some part of scotch located at the base of this side

Let's do it with my usual product

It's working but... opss....    ...beware ... that product remove also the paint behind the scotch  :ghost:

Yikes....couldn't you "roll" the scotch residu off with a finger ? Hard work, but definitely the safest.
Or use a (new) sticker and very shortly stick it on the old scotch residues and pull of again immediately (with two hands) to get the sticker to "eat" the residu.

At least put something over that nice new carpet before you ruin it  ;D

Yes, I'll do a mix of that  ;)
I'm using a piece of unused  blue carpet under the cockpit in order to protect the carpet in place  8)

OK, regarding the water damages, a lot of work  :-[

Let's start with this corner + the base of the side

I apply 'PRIMER' for wood first.

Because there's too much space to fill, I'll apply a first layer of 'bondo' (wood filler) :

Next day, a second layer of bondo...

...and I finish by sanding it :

An other edge to repair... see  :-\

It requires few layers of 'bondo'

I don't have too much empty space in the lair, so I cannot put the cockpit lay down on one side  :? I've to work on that position... which is not easy  But it's ok  :P

Notice the piece of 'blue carpet' under the cockpit, in order to protect the original blue carpet from the V2  ::) 8)

Let's start to paint on that side.

Usual protection

and the paint :

The second edge of that side... same work :

Before  :

After :

It better isn't it ?  :-* But I'm not happy with the blue color used  :? It doesn't match the original cockpit blue color. I'll see what I'll do for that...
Title: Re: Star Wars cockpit... operation back to life ^^

...and back on the other side... The one that supposed to be against the wall. This is why there are so many scratches  :-\

Ok similar work than previously. A lot of areas to fix  :-X ... here's some of them :

Let's fix the blue color on the edges...

...and now the black color :

Done

The worst thing on this side is ... Darth Vader... too damaged  ... Ok let's try to fix 'him'  ;)

Let's use this set of colors :

Before :

After :

OK, not perfect but far better than previously isn't it ?  :P :-*

Wonderfull to see this machine back in action. Hope you can enjoy it to the fullest running aae.

p.s. are you running the game on a tv or on a crt monitor? raster monitors tended to have a smaller dotpitch / higher-resolution then the standard arcade monitors.  Suffice to say I think it looks best at high-res on a good CRT monitor.

It's now a VGA monitor... because it 'draws' better vectors than a CRT 15Hz. The next step will be to implement AAE (vector games emulator). I've already tried AAE with Asteroids few months ago, and since Star Wars is now emulated, I'm very curious to see it running  :P

Thanks for the link Ol'  ;) (I've seen it on J+ board). I think It's useless for this project. I've already ask them the question, see

Question : Can this one by used with mame, in order to have a better ‘Vector Feeling’ on a classic VGA monitor ?
For example, I have a Star Wars cockpit, and for the moment I’m using a mame + VGA Monitor. Is there any interest to add your VectorVGA module between my computer and the VGA monitor in terms of display quality ?

Answer : The VectorVGA converter inputs the X-Y vector signal from a real game board and converts it to a VGA signal that goes to a monitor.  The MAME that you have only outputs a VGA signal, so the two are not compatible.  Unfortunately that's the downside of MAME; it doesn't have the realistic "vector" look.

Strictly speaking, your idea is possible but it would be a lot of work.  There is a special version of MAME called VectorMAME that outputs vector data to a special converter board called the Zektor ZVG.  VectorMAME requires a DOS computer with a parallel port and sound card.  You could then plug the Zektor ZVG output to VectorVGA and achieve the realistic "analog" feel.

...but this interface is a GREAT thing, and i'm curious to see the quality of the display (the existing youtube demo video is too small).

WOOOOWWWWww very interesting  8)

I love vector games and especially Tempest  :-* :-*

SORRY OT:

Bruno, it's difficult to find a dedicated Tempest cab here in Europe?  ???

Bruno,

If I understand this device correctly you would not reach anything with it in your situation.

This merely converts a real X-Y color signal and transforms it to a _raster_ VGA signal. In a way, it's exactly the reverse of a Zektor vector.
You can see that it's raster already on the Youtube video (which looks like they use shockingly poor dot-pitch CRT's too !).

To me, this takes the heart out of a vector game.

In your case, running that special vector mame version will be probably even looking better.

I see only one nice use for this device: you can use it to test vector boards on a regular test monitor that you may already have (although we usually use CGA monitors for checking of course).
But then again, I don't repair vector boards nor test them much. And it's pretty pricey.

On another note, but very SW / vector related, this looks interesting:

Yes, but I was hoping that this interface would be able to 'drive' a VGA monitor in a special way that would make vectors looks better than Mame currently does, using maybe some 'hardware' tricks or something

I've to try now AAE emulator with Star Wars, I hope the result will be as good as the test I've done with Asteroids

Woow  :o Yes... why Atari didn't release Return Of The Jedi, like the two first movies  :-\ This version, currently documented right here (http://urbaninteractive.wordpress.com/) looks amazing !  :-*

Not yet. I've already got an other computer for that, more powerful and an other graphic card that fits the AAE emulator requirement... but It's still on the waiting line.  8)

Nice work - very impressive.  I was checking out your hack for the yoke with the sidewinder.  How do you know which wires go to which wire on the yoke?  I'm just starting to look into this, I have a yoke in really good shape and have hunted down a sidewinder joystick.  Just trying to dig into those photos a little deeper.  Is this the best hack for the yoke?  how well does it really work?  thanks,  gk

Well, I've founded the solution on the 1UP's ARCADE website here : http://www.1uparcade.com (http://www.1uparcade.com)

:? OOOPS :? That website is now dead

Hopefully, I still have the web pages available on a CD-Rom somewhere in my mess ()... Let me few days, and I'll find it for you  ;)

Welcome here Uncle  :-*

Thanks for the link... this tutorial is very important  :)

I've used it two times... first for this Star Wars cockpit, but also to bring back to life my Return Of The Jedi (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=494.0) Cab.  ;)

What he is not telling you is that he parted out a complete Star Wars in order to Mame it!   >:(

Spyridon only states a fact. You are parting out a perfectly nice SW upright.

I didn't have very warm feelings about your decision to mame an original Star Wars cab (which is fine if you find an empty shell, like Bruno did, but sucks if you have a complete one).I already let that know on the BYOAC forum. But, since you were very determined and other people would benefit from the parts, I helped you with a link to this thread.
Next you try to sell the parts in a way that most people in this hobby just don't like, sending undisclosed "best offers" above your minimum. That's a not-so-cool way to get as much money for a part as you can.
If you'd been cool, you'd have named your price and sell it to the first person who says he wants it. That's how it goes in this hobby. It's not a money making show.
Even putting it on e-bay would have been more fair because everyone could see what the offered price was and then decide to bid more (or not).

So, it's Spyridon who is cool, not you. He sent me a Pac Man joystick for absolutely free because he knew he could help my Puckman cab project with it and, as Spyridon says, has a lot of valuable information from my restoration threads and help in his projects on the BYOAC forum.

I don't see the problem in Spyridon mentioning what you did. It's a fact, and many members of this forum are also member of the BYOAC forum and the KLOV forum. It's a small community.

I did sell every item I had to the first and minimum offer with the exception of the boards which was too low.  EVERY ITEM on the list.  It's your hobby, don't expect me to understand how you guys think when it comes to cost of this stuff or the "proper" way to sell it.   How am I supposed to know what the "right" way to sell on these forums without a pissing contest?  I have every right to sell my own stuff to anyone who wants to buy it.  In fact 4 of your good friends on your forum were happy to buy my stuff - and I hope they bring to live some of thier machines with the parts.  You can't have it both ways.  Without people selling like me, where are you going to get the parts?  I'm sure if you needed these parts and bought them you would change your tune.  And I do appreciate the link you sent me, it was very informative and put me on the right track for the next part of my project.  If I find more of these parts and want to sell them you are not making it easy for me to help any of your hobbies out.

This thread is a good example of an appropriate cab to mame.  It is well done and keeps the outside of the cab looking stock.

...so let's just get back on topic.

Hi DN,

I've just completed the dual strike hack, and wondered if I could pick your brain (hope you have that saying in Belgium).  I was wondering, do your trigger buttons actually register as joystick buttons in windows, or do they register as hat buttons?  Mine are currently hat buttons.

Cheers,

Well, I would say 'hat buttons' if I remember well, but it wasn't a problem, because you can easily assign them in the mame key configuration setup menu (via TAB key)  8)

Nice project, is it still progressing? Bruno, are you still planning to use a xy vector monitor with a real game pcb, or are you totally satisfied with the emulation as it is?

Well, of course I would like to use the real board + XY monitor, but this temporary solution fits my desires. In addition  I've so many 'non playable' games to fix and other 'huge' projects in my 'to do' list first... But I know one day, I'll come back to this one  8)
