Title: Raspberry pi laserdisc replacement project EVA
Post by: xadhoom on February 24, 2016, 11:21:42 PM
Hi, just to update you all. I'm working quickly on this cool project.
Something  similar to Dexter but I use simply raspberry with hw acceleration and pal video @ 10mbits grabbed from Philips laserdisc.
I want to do this for euro version at the moment.
The EVA also translate commands for one ld player to another.
Currently implemented pioneer , working on Sony and Philips .
You can see some of my work here.

Nice work alessandro

I've started (but not finish as ususal :) ) the same project with a cubieboard (this board has a RVB output for DLII PAL).

can you explain you work :
Do you use vlc?
Do you use a custom distribution?
Do you plan to release your source code (for adding new player)?

This project uses the USB adapter to write and read data to and from the arcade Pcb .
The system implements laserdisc player protocol and send commands to the digital player running on raspberry.
Using mpeg2 video @ high constant bitrate encoded from our laserdiscs. In this special case from one of the last Philips PAL DL.
The comunication between the subsystem is too quick so I'm going to insert delay in some parts to emulate laserdisc player seek speed.
Raspberry has composite ntsc and pal output so we can use it in many games.
As request for spectroman if we have rgbs output we can go straight to the monitor. I'll try it out.
Another request is to do overlay data on video... Quite interesting also for DL2.
Now the system is in tuning to set the right delay in search routine.
I'll finish soon the Sony protocol. Just missing the request of the position as address in frame.
Next Philips protocol.
The system also will translate commands from pioneer to Sony and back , from pioneer to Philips and back and each combination of the three.
Byez

Do you have a list of hardware this is compatible with please?

I'm wondering if it would work with a SONY LDP-1500P, without any additional hardware (i.e. Laser Ace Conversion Card)

If it does, I would be very interested in this also :-)

Yes you can connect it as command translator.
Sony is already implemented.
I'm going to finish it in next 2 months.

Today we did strong test and we are going well.

And yes Sony could work

Remember the raspberry is used instead of laserdisc.
We connect the dl and sa pcb directly to raspberry via serial port

You want to use it as command translator from Philips to Sony and keep laserdisc inside your cab?
Which lasergames are you planning to play?

Yes I was hoping to use the SONY LDP-1500P, but instead of using the Laser Ace Card, use the Pi to deal with the commands

Games are likely to be Dragons Lair 1, 2 or Space Ace

You can use 1500p only with PAL discs.
So no dl2.
Which hardware do you have?

Just some improving in the code

This video is taken using original hardware connected to a raspberry 1 that is working as laserdisc player replacement.
My video is Mpeg2@10mbits.
Next test will be with uncompressed video and space ace

This is a very interesting project.  I would like to see if it could work with my Data East Road Blaster boards & NTSC laserdisc.  Data East used Sony LDP-1000A laser disc players in Bega's Battle & Road Blaster.

Could you tell me what program(s) you used to rip the video from the laserdisc?  I would like to try to rip the video from my disc while it is still good.

Hi to all, EVA is ready to be produced in 20 pieces.
I'm asking pre orders at 200€ each. Reached the 20 orders. I'll start.
Each kit will have a complete kit to replace your laserdisc player with EVA.
Video included. Just reply below with the video you need. You can choose space ace or dragon's' lair euro version.
Some of you have saw EVA working in our event . So feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Ps remember it's not an emulator , it's laserdisc player replacement. You need the original pcb to be able to play with it
