Title: What do you think of Candy Cabs??
Post by: logan on February 03, 2009, 09:20:11 AM
Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anybody else but me on this board is into "Candy Cabs". I know, I know, most of the users here are more retro and into old woodies but what do you think about the "newer" universal Candys like the 'SNK Super Neo 29' or 'SEGA Astro City'. I really like them because the look so clean and... well... they really like hard candy...  ;D ;D
Okay, it may be because of my age (I'm only 24 years old, I think this will make me one of the youngest users here) why I like these cabs from the 90s, or maybe because I used to play alot of SNK games in the Italian Arcades when I was a little boy...

Of course I also like the real Retros like Pac-Man :pac: or Donkey Kong...

So, tell me what you think!

Hehe, I'm 24 as well and I love candies!

I don't think I'll be getting any anytime soon, though, for a few reasons:
1. My location (can barely find any cabs around here, let alone pricey candies)
2. Cash flow issues (unemployed at the moment)
3. Still haven't fixed up either of the 2 upright cabs I've already got

To me, an arcade game is an arcade game, be it upright, mini, cocktail, sitdown, deluxe (drool) or candy. I love them all. Well, most, some cabs are just butt ugly to me (like NSF and some other generic European made cabs).

just got my first candy cabinet last weekend! a SEGA ASTRO CITY! ;D
absolutely love it. still have to clean it and such, it's been used for over a decade in japanese arcades i guess.

i also love some of the classic wooden cabs,  such as the donkey kong and pac-man / galaxian.
(have a 90% complete scratch-build dk cab as well)

I think games would be just fine in those cabinets!

Since many games in the 90's were conversion kits, like Street Fighter II' CE  would be very nice in a candy cab!  :D

I've seen only a few dedicated SFII' CE cabs, and they're rare!.... quickly converted to the next game.  :-\

I don't hate them or anything, and I see how practical they are, but they provoke not a single emotion with me....  The lack of dedicated artwork is a big pain there.
I also think the screens are to big for the really classic games. They're fine for the later generation of games though because those games have much more details.

However if I had loads of space for cabs I'd sure would like to have one of them.

I will always prefer a dedicated cab and the more classic one's. Yes, compared to you padawans I'm probably too old for the candy's at 41...... :D

But they sure look a lot nicer than the majority of "general" Jamma cabs ! I'd love to have one of those mini candy cabs for my son !

I would say the same than Level42...

I don't have one at home but I enjoy playing 'modern' games on it when I visit guys who had one (or more  ;D)

I'm also a fan of vertical 'shooters like Ikaruga or Under Defeat, and I can tell you playing such games on an Astro City (with vertical screen) is absolutely great  :-* But the screen is just to big for 80s games  :?

So I would say such cabinets are the perfect 'weapons' for playing 90s and+ jamma games, but I won't fall in love regarding the shape of the cabinet for example. It's more a 'tool' for playing game in good condition than a collector item, like our old dedicated cabinet.

But I would like to have one, because I'm also a player  ;) ...and modern fighting games are the best on such cab'  ;) :-*

Anyone has a 'simple' Astro City for sale cheap ?  ;)

I think I am one of a kind when it comes to playing old games on candy cabs. All the games which I have in my 3 cabs right now are pre-JAMMA. I particularly love games from mid 80s - early 90s, but I do like the odd newer game too. Not having the space for so many cabs mean I have to have something generic, and being a fan of Japanese style arcades, it had to be candy cabs for me instead of woodies. I don't have a problem with the bigger screen, I prefer it actually. Naturally, if I was to open an arcade I would have dedicated cabs for the older stuff, and candies for the new.

I've 2 of them but won't sell them  ;) ;)
... but I've sent you a PM, maybe I know someone who want's to sell!

But if you want to have a real good looking candy get yourself a "SNK Super Neo 29 Candy", I love this cab:
(http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/2348/superneo29bp2.jpg) (http://img521.imageshack.us/my.php?image=superneo29bp2.jpg)

I really would love to have a Donkey Kong Jr. or Pac-Man or Galaga... but those are so hard to find compared to a candy (and so much more expensive), that's another reason I started with the SNK.

@vib_ribbon, You really play the pre-jamma games on candies?? I never tried that because I also thought the 29" Screen might be to big and it wouldn't look good?? Got any Pics for us?!  ::) ::) ;D

Thanks for the answers guys! :D

Got it Logan  ::) But I'm sure I'll be to get a New Astro more closer  ;)
In addition, it seems that a lot of 'Japanese cabinets' fans are upgrading their game room with more recent models such Egret 2 or 3 for example... and so, cabinets such Astro or New Astro city will be cheaper ... and more easy to find (but maybe I'm wrong, I'm not a specialist for these cabinet after all? ).

Happy to see i'm not the only one who plays classics on japanese candy cabs.
Good choice of game. I am a big fan of konami's classics.

In a way, dedicated cabs are for sure a real pleasure to play on.
On te other way, candy cabs are the best for standard jamma pcb's.
And as far as i remember, i only played on generic cabs except for racing/flight simulation cabs.
And as those classic european cabs aren't that sexy to my eyes, i find candies
is a good choice. Especially for vertical shooters, as Bruno said.

Regarding the size of the picture : I don't think it's too big. Take a real good quality monitor and
your game will look amazing (who said Egret II ?)
Even an old Kung fu masta or Green beret.

One other point, I am quite diverse when it comes to what games I enjoy, so lots of interchangeable control panels:

great to see there are some more candycab lovers like me on this board!  ;D ;D

Well, I mostly play "newer" games on my candys, stuff from the NeoGeo MVS and SEGA STV ... I really love those "Side-Scroll"-Beat 'em Ups (like Metal Slug, Deamon Front, Die Hard Arcade and so on. Vendetta from Konami also is a fun game).

I dont own any oldschool pcbs yet... but I think i will get a pacman or donkey kong pcb and try to get it working in one of the candies...  ;)

//EDIT: Wooohooo, 100th post!  ;D ;D :D

I'm selling my AWSD cab at the moment, probably too expensive for what you are looking for?? GBP600.
I wanna sell it so I can buy a Crazy Taxi upright, with the intention of MAMEing it in the future for some Out Run action.  :spaceace:

Now all you need to do is sell me those SNK LS-30 joysticks, to go with the Ikari Warriors board you sold me  I've had a look and they are bloody difficult to get your hands on. I would eventually like a dedicated Ikari Warriors cabinet. Not seen any for sale, but would have nowhere to put it anyway so can only dream   :'(.

dedicated Ikari Warriors, I've come across quite a few on eBay US over the years.

as for the sticks, i think one of the french/ german spare parts sites have them in stock but silly money if i remember correctly. i'll see if i can remember which site it was. otherwise, as i said, look out for 2nd hand panels for lesser known games like guerilla war or S.A.R with the sticks, and get the seller to just sell the sticks/ or just send the sticks and let them keep the rest. you might have to make do with a self fabricated key to undo the twisty knob though cos they are also very hard to find.

You probably mean this site:

http://www.arcadeshop.de/Joysticks-Rotary-Joystick-SNK_538.html (http://www.arcadeshop.de/Joysticks-Rotary-Joystick-SNK_538.html)

They don't sell them any more and yes they were VERY expensive! I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for panels or sticks. There are two on US EBay atm, although one is missing the joystick knob. I've asked him if he will ship to the UK.. We shall see.

Well I managed to get a pair of NOS LS-30 rotary joysticks. Damn they are nice!!!! Now what type of cabinet would work perfectly for horizontal and vertically orientated games.....That brings me nicely onto:

Drool.... Egret II....

Hmmm, Japanese cabinet import... $805... Not too far up the road for collection. What can I sell to raise the cash and can I convince the missus?!?!?!?  :-\

I'm off to see vib_ribbon tonight so can salivate over his ones....

you're sliding down a very slippery slope, dude, and very quickly!!

soon it will be, in order to get that to work, i would also need to buy this, and to get this to work, i would need to learn this other thing... it's a never ending circle!!  ;D

i'll show you some of the problems i've encountered over the years when i see ya.

ps- i don't suppose you are on shmups.com?? there was some chat on there about ikari on there recently...
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=24595

...and especially this comment:
"One other on-topic thing you need to be aware of. Ikari & Victory Road both are TATE'ed backwards. There is no screen-flip in the DIP switch settings."

Dear lord... this lead me to this:

don't wanna put you off... but it's tough getting games to work at home!!  :'(

I love slippery slopes, better get my toboggan out ;D
