I posted this on another forum, but I think the people here would enjoy this too.
Most of you have original cabinets and whenever possible an original CRT is used. But there are people who use mame and with the hlsl shaders getting better, it's sometimes hard to see the difference. Here are some pictures, try to guess which ones are from a CRT and which ones are from an LCD.
This is just for fun, so please try to keep discussions about which screen type is better out of this thread.

Guessing the first two are CRT's and the last one is a LCD?
Feel free to make fun of me if I screwed up royally 8)

It's hard to say, picture 2 and 3 are (intentional?) a bit blurry, not sharp. But my guess would be that picture 3 is a LCD. somehow the letters are too clean, too tight and too flat. They show no emtion. Could be wrong though, one can only see the real difference clearly on the real thing, it's not only the scanlines that makes the difference, but also the look of a CRT, the colours, the curve of the tube, etc.
-
first one would be a tft with a scanline generator. i used this in my very first cab that i got.. a cocktail with a 60:1. every sin you can make... i made them all. :)
allthough it looks okay the flat screen ruins it for me. if you know the difference... you will see it. right away.
it is hard to tell from the screenshots.. but i would guess that the first is tft with scanline, the second is an original crt with a bad pic and the third seems to be a normal tft without modifications.

I'm not getting into this.....ooooohhh no I'm not.
The only thing I want to say is.......you guys should see the picture on my Ms.Pac Man....... That NIB WG monitor looks SO bright and SO crisp and SO nice......it makes me regret not getting more of those monitors even more.....
Let's see if I can make a good picture of it... ;D

the second is a CRT, the curved artifacts give it away.
The first is a LCD or TFT i think, which looks pretty good IYAM, but i dont have high standards
if you need to use a LCD, its better than nothing
i do preffer crt though, just for the feel of it ;D

Nice challenge! :)
I would say all these three pictures are...LCD, because the letters are just 'too perfect', like no bend, no curve... ?
-
top one is the crt I want!!

Didn't want to spoil this thread with my Ms.Pac CRT pics but you can find them here:

So....when is the big "reveal" ?

OK, I won't leave you in suspense.
#1 is Mame on an lcd with scanlines enabled.
#2 is Mame on the same lcd with almost all options enabled - pincushion, curvature, scanlines, saturation and some convergence errors
#3 is a modern CRT
-
LOL, must say #2 does do a good job in recreating an old and not too good CRT :)
However, if you compare the one's I made from my Ms.Pac #3 looks pretty bad....but what do you mean with "modern" CRT.....VGA CRT monitor ?

I mean a CRT with a 1600x1200 resolution.
-
Huh? CRTs don't have "resolution" in that sense right ? They have dots ;D

Right, I meant max resolution of 1600x1200.

Top one nice strong colour . is it the sgl3000 ?

Nope, just the scanlines from the mame hlsl shaders
