There is nothing wrong with autotrace, i use it many times, but sometimes the source is not sufficient and results in a inaccurate trace.

Do you use different settings for autotrace, or do you use a universal setting on all your autotrace work ?

If you use a single setting, what are your settings in AI ?

I ask this, because i am Always fighting with these settings, and your work looks impressive  ;)
