Bruno,
I was reading through your thread where you picked up an Atari Ireland Rolling Thunder machine from Jason. Well I have "potentially" got my hands on one too!
Unfortunately the CPO has been replaced with a US version, so 4 - 5 inches of art is lost, but I can live with that. However, the marquee has also been replaced with a cut down US one. The irish one is much better and has additional art, an enemy, whereas the US one looks really squashed on the irish cab.
Anyway, I wanted to get an irish repro one made but MameMarquees only do the US one:
http://www.mamemarquees.com/rolling-thunder-marquee-p-890.html (http://www.mamemarquees.com/rolling-thunder-marquee-p-890.html)
They do however, do "custom" ones. I can't find any other places that do that marquee or find any files on the web of the marquee and there don't seem to be any for sale on EBay.
If I manage to get this machine would it be possible for you to do a high res scan of your one, as it looks in fantastic condition, so I could get a custom one reproduced?
Cheers

You're lucky Daz' ;)
- My Rolling Thunder is still accessible in my game room
- My Scanner A3 is still plugged
;D
So here we go :
The setup are : 300dpi - no resizing - PNG files :
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/rolling/rt2.jpg) (http://www.arcadelifestyle.net/rolling/rt2.png)
[right click for saving the high res .png file (32MB)]

[right click for saving the high res .png file (32MB)]
Now the best option would be to make a vectorization file (there are some specialists here and there for a such job : Dexter, Zorg or Nickos69 by example :)).
I hope you'll catch the game :-* :-* :-*
-
This is something I've been wanting to do for a while, but I am on holidays as of after work today and I am flying out and won't be able to Vector this till I get back :-[
I've quickly joined it so you can see :-)

Jesus Christ :o The marquee could be available *before* Dazza got the game ? ::) :P ;D
Anyway, the arcade community has to got this one available too ;)

I so know that ;D
It was to show a crap version of a Vector, till I trace the other one and make a 'REAL' vector 8)
But I am not back till the 3rd of January to do it

For me, helping out is what it's ALL about. I've been looking for artwork for some games for years and this is the reason I got into creating vectors or artwork that people are after, and I make it available to all for FREE !!!
Just giving something back, gives me a lot of pleasure knowing I am helping others keep the dream alive
-
Oh my god! That was quick!!!! :o
Bruno, you are a star! Always looking out for the fellow arcade enthusiast. ;D
If someone could do a vetor version or cleanup that would make my day, actually make my year! As can be seen when the images are put together you can see the join, there is a discolouration in the top yellow bar. Funny though because the rest of the image I could probably get away with
Again most gracious thanks for the quick responses.... 8)
Cheers

Well in fact the scan was the easy job  ...
The big work is the vectors specialists ;) They are THE men 8) :-*

Was wondering whether I should have a go myself. I'm quite a dab hand in paint shop pro
What software do the expects here use? Are there any tutorials online?

Yep, I had 5 minutes to do this, this morning before I left for work. I'll try and fix up the image a bit tonight but I won't be able to trace it for a few weeks

I use Adobe Illustrator ;)
If you have the time, go for it. I was going to put this on my laptop and do it while I am away, but the mrs and kids may not like it
We'll see

Yes Dazza, I strongly suggest you to wait for the real & final 'vecto' file, and not trying to correct the 'preview' bitmap ;)

lol, this is something I enjoy doing anyway. I am sure I'll have some time to do a bit on it.
I just want it made available ASAP

After reading the story (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=552.msg4133#msg4133) (Impressive !!!!) about your world record on Rolling Thunder, you MUST have a real Rolling Thunder at home 8) There's no question about it !
The post on TG (here (http://www.twingalaxies.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12647&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)) is very interesting :-*
Jesus... I don't know why, but I need to switch on my RT Cab ...for the hunt of the 800k ::) ;) ;D :-* :-* :-*
-
Hehe, it was long time playing to get that world record, months, playing every night.
Well I'm pleased to say I got my own Rolling Thunder machine TODAY! 8) 8) 8) The board is faulty so I need to get that sorted. Overall it's a lovely cabinet, the side art is in amazing condition but has a repro CPO. The marquee is also a repro but we already know that story :P
It's the first step in the right direction to get the world record on the arcade format!
I got a few pictures of the road trip so once I get them loaded onto the PC I'll start a thread to show you ;D

This is what I say ;D ;D ;D

Love it!

Thought I'd have a crack at doing a vector of this  Not doing too bad if I do say so myself.
How do I upload images so I can show work in progress?
For all the vector experts...I'm using Adobe Illustrator, which seems less functional than PhotoShop, but anyway... What is the best way of getting the colours from the scan? Even in PhotoShop colour picker (which you can select colours from the image which you can't do in Illustrator) depending in where I click yields massively different colours.
-
Well I'm loving this vector conversion work!
Progress so far.
1. Trace the black background of the main letters
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3217/3140258227_2fc3d9fabe.jpg)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140258227/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140258227/)
2. Trace the bullet path and attempt to get some color matches
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3201/3140261695_8ae22e71e3.jpg)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140261695/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140261695/)
3. Trace our hero Albatross's black outline (takes a long time )
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140263611/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140263611/)
4. Add some color - The red and yellow background
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3215/3140266063_8544df33e5.jpg)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140266063/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3140266063/)
5. Lets give Albatross some features - Hair and a face
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3141096704/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3141096704/)
So thats the progress so far! I did have all his hands and gun done but Adobe Illustrator decided to crash on me before I had saved (is there an auto backup?!?!?!?). I have found getting the right colours is the most difficult bit!
I'm not sure how I'm going to do Albatross's trousers and the Enemy's hood and top. They are a dotted colour (can be seen if you zoom in).
Bruno is there any way to upload the pictures rather than post links?
Cheers

Very good job so far Dazza :)
It's amazing to see how you're learning fast Illustrator... congratulation :spaceace:
By the way, Zorg & Nikos are working on it too ;)
Regarding the pictures, I've edited your post ;) In order to display pictures from flickr, just go to your picture, select to display all the sizes and choose by example 'medium'. Right click on the 'medium' picture and you've got the right url picture.
-
Right click on the 'medium' picture and you've got the right url picture.
Excellent, I was looking for the actual file URL for ages, obviously didn't look hard enough
Made good further progress, now I have master bezier curves I've redone Albatross's outline so it's nice and smooth now. Also found out how to cut out custom shapes and colour them in so can do Albatross on a single layer now ;D
Will get some more screen shots when I have reached a good progress point.
-
Well I am back in town, does anyone want me to finish this off ?
Also Dazza, where is MY credit on Flickr with joining the original file ????? 8) :o :-*
All good
-
Hehe, sorry Dexter but I redid the join from the original PNG files to get a higher resolution image to trace from. The one on flickr is a scaled down version of the new one.
I'll stick a credit on there for you as you were instrumental in my decisions to have a go my self and which tools to use ;D
Time for an update.... Let me upload some pictures of my progress
-
I'm very pleased with how its turning out. Click the link and select "All Sizes" the select "Large" to get a better view of the images)
1. Added our hero's jumper, hands and gun belt straps

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3157433891/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3157433891/)
2. Lets give out hero some trousers a belt and add some highlights to his shoes
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3158265376/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3158265376/)
3. Finishing Albatross we have to give him his most important item....A GUN!!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3157434141/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3157434141/)
4. Lets finish the main lettering, by adding the blue layer
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3100/3158265720_09628a003d.jpg)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3158265720/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3158265720/)
5. Final touch to the main letter, the purple layer. Bruno's scan was ever so slightly off straight so I also went back and made sure all letters are perfectly in line (use the illustrator rulers)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3158265928/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3158265928/)
6. What Marquee would be complete without the Atari logo
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3157434643/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3157434643/)
So "only" the enemy on the right hand side to do......
-
Onto the final vectorisation steps....
1. Trace the enemy's outline. I'm getting more skilled at the process so this takes nowhere near the time it did when originally tracing albatross
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3167793983/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3167793983/)
2. Lets give the enemy his earie mask and cape
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3168629654/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3168629654/)
3. Add his torso and legs
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3167803589/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3167803589/)
4. Adding the gloves and boots to the enemy the marquee is COMPLETED!!! :spaceace: :spaceace:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3167806367/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalsy/3167806367/)
The long learning curve and painstaking tracing and colour matching is over! Now where do I put the vectorised file so other people can gain access to it.....
-
AWESOME work ;D
Add it to localarcade if you can ??
-
Thanks!
The only thing I didn't manage to do was the halftone colouring on Albatross's trousers and the enemy's hood and torso. May have a go at that tonight, but to tell you the truth I'm quite happy with the flat colour result.
-
Wow... I cannot believe this is the first time you're doing vectors Dazza  :o
Very impressive, congratulation :-* :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

I can help with the halftonne. see for example:
-
Excellent, how do you do that? Is that done in Adobe Illustrator? I had a play but just couldn't get the right effect.
-
100% illustrators.
a lot of dots aligned plus a mask
-
So do you create a swatch and fill using the swatch? Or do you manual create a repeating dot pattern on a sqare object and only show it through a mask?
-
So do you create a swatch and fill using the swatch? Or do you manual create a repeating dot pattern on a sqare object and only show it through a mask?
I create the manual pattern, using the gradient form tool,
use the object décomposition tool (just decompose the object , not the background)
duplicate it
ungroup all
I try as much as I can to eliminate as much as possible the unneeded dots
group every dots
then I create a mask and apply it on top of the group.
this allow to have a nice halftoning pattern effect, and also allows to create some dot gradients effects.
-
Had a play and got the following. It's zoomed in to get a full appreciation of the dots. When viewed at 1:1 the colours are a pretty good match. It's difficult to get the dots the correct size without screwing up the colour badly
Don't know which I prefer, the flat colours or the half tones.....hmmmmm ??? ??? ??? Still at least I now have a really good understanding of clipping masks...
-
congrats with that.
coloring half toones is hard, the dot size change the aspect drastically. if even I can find a mathematical description of the % means used in printing.
are you going to make the marquee available ?
-
Yes, the marquee will available once fully completed.
I have been rescaling the marquee to ensure the actual document dimensions are 1:1. My previous work was based on the original scans which when imported were about 10 times larger than the real size and the aspect ratios were wrong. This then caused the problem that when I resized my original work the horizontal aspect was too small, which meant all my vectors were slightly wrong (squashed horizontally). Hindsight is a great thing, if I had got the scale right in the first place I would have saved myself ALOT of hassle, so I've been remedying this.
Now I just have the half tone on his trousers to finish and then I shall be printing the half tone parts 1:1 scale to ensure I get a good colour match. I now have my arcade machine along with it's cracked / broken marquee so can get a much better idea of the actual colours.
I assume the half tone colours are always made up of existing colours used in the image? So the enemy mask would be made of the yellow and red used elsewhere.
I may try taking a macro picture of those half tone image parts so I can get the exact diameter of the dots used. We shall see how well that works out ;D
-

correct assupmtion. less colors (inks) to use.
-
Thought as much.
I have now finished rescaling the document so the artboard is the exactly 567mm x 165mm. I have taken measurements from bits in my marquee and measured them against the corresponding vector and they are pretty damn close (fractions of mms).
The only thing left now is I am unhappy with my colours. I matched all my colours, with painful scrutiny, to the scanned image. However, when I compare those colours to my original marquee they are quite washed out. The red is definitely a deeper red than the scan would indicate.
The problem is I can't take the colours from my marquee as the light behind it has discoloured it quite substantially. I could probably get the red and yellow from the far edges as they were hidden behind metal and do not seem to have been affected. Hmmmm, what to do.......?!?! Damn my perfectionism!
-
I was going to upload this to http://www.localarcade.com (http://www.localarcade.com).
Zorg....are you an admin on there? If you are, should I put it in "unclean" or straight to "arcade"? Other than the colours I would say it's pretty spot on.
-
Put it in unclean for now till the colours are fixed I say ;D
I'll have a look at it too

I would say put it to arcade/marquee. don't worry about colors, even if you make it accurate, you never know how people will print them until you have tried to print a color sample. that's will the task of everyone :D

I presume that is the case. (This is how it works here by the way ;)) . The administrator has to validate the new member, and then after you'll have a mail with a link for activation.
Amazing Work Dazza ! And welcome to the big family of 'Vectors Men' ;)

Amazing Work Dazza ! And welcome to the big family of 'Vectors Men' ;)
Thanks Bruno!
I can now log into www.localcarcade.com. However, I just cannot load the damn thing, that visual verification is a right pain. I can't work out the letters being displayed half the time and clicking it (like the instructions say) does not load a new one! I originally thought it was not uploading because I was getting the letters wrong, but I got a nice obvious one and it still doesn't work! >:(
I enter the following details (after logging in of course):
Image file: Select the file "Rolling Thunder - Atari Ireland Marquee.ai" which is 2,092kb and is 1607px x 467px (so within the guidelines)
Thumbnail File: Select the file "Rolling-Thunder-Thumbnail-300x89.jpg" which is 14kb and 300x89 (so within the guidelines)
Image Title : "Rolling Thunder - Marquee - Atari Ireland"
Description : "Adobe Illustrator vector version of the marquee for the Atari Ireland version of the 1986 Namco classic, Rolling Thunder.
The trousers of Albatross and the mask and torso of the enemy have had the half tone colouring emulated."
Keywords : rolling thunder namco atari ireland adobe illustrator
I type in the verification letters and press "Submit". The page simply reloads and blanks out the Image File and Thumbnail File details I entered and says "Select an Image File!". I've tried Firefox and IE and both do the same thing! I give up!

thanks dazza.
I won't be abble to upload it this WE, I will deal with it on monday.
