Title: For my good friend Béla...
Post by: level42 on April 22, 2014, 06:29:07 PM
....this nice picture of yesterday evening.

It still feels itchy but I do really appreceate being able to do a nap while the 1541 trickles down the bits to the C64  ;D

Thanks for the floppies !!!

I must say I was damn lucky with this set. I bought it from the first owner and man has he taken great care of it ! both computer and drive look like NEW ! Even those small  factory approval stickers are still there.

Played a couple of games. Bruce Lee is amazingly identical to the A8 version apart from the sounds. love that game.

Bruce Lee, a working C64 and Level42 in a room together!
What a surrealistically beautiful sight!

Lol yeah!!! :D
You were really lucky indeed, most of the units are in really bad shape, or yellow after 30 years. :D
Can't wait for your expereiences with the C64 classics, if you need more games just shout. ;)

Admit it, you were just trying to break the poor C64.
It's forbidden to type *,*
It's like typing google into google, everybody knows it would break the internet (see IT crowd ;D)

LOL !!!

Wasn't there a certain POKE that would damage the C64 or is that just a rumor.

I must say,........weird things happening here:

 ;D ;D ;D
I know that there was a urban legen about a killer code for the PET 2001:
Quote
10 motor 1
20 motor 0
30 goto 10
It turns the tape motor on and off so quickly, it overheats and... flames!! :-)

I even used it for the design of a CD label a long time ago…

… but what's going on here, are you stacking on C64 ? Is it just to torture them in your basement and post pictures here to hurt us?

I think it was the Commodore PET, but still just a rumour

Found the extra C64 between the stuff for the upcoming flea market at the club. Suggested to have a look at it as it had a sticky note attached saying it was defective and "might be something simple"....

Some pics:

Opened both machines. My machine as you can see is "Made in England", the defective one in "W. Germany".

The defective one has a mobo from 1983, the working one from 1984.

Commodore made some improvements, they made a decent shield instead of some "aluminum foil" to shield the machine (like the Atari XL series had from the start). The funny thing is that apparently they had already discovered that the PLA and VIC chips were running too hot and parts of the shield are designed to touch the top of these chips. They put some silicon grease dabs (too thick) on those chips and so the shield also acted as a heatsink (where have I seen that concept of choosing cheap heat sink solutions again.........aha....yes the WG6100 ;))

Anyway, they also "improved" something else, they got rid of the sockets and soldered almost all but the most failing chips directly on the board. A well known practice that Jack Tramiel also brought with him to Atari. There he must have been extremely happy as none of the Atari 8 bit chips ran hot (despite it's 79% higher clock speed :D) so he could solder them ALL to the board...sigh .....well it did reduce costs I guess.

Anyway, the PLA is getting hot but so is the SID. Swapped the PLA as that _IS_ socketed on both. The one of the "dead" unit made the working unit not work anymore, but regretfully it didn't work the other way around.
Conclusion, the PLA is dead, but there is more dead on that dead unit.

Too much dead for my time.....I closed the unit again and it'll go into the market for what it is: for parts or repair.

Just had a look at ebay prices for tested working C64 chips and they are pretty nuts, especially the SID !
However, I have no way to test that one or any of the others so....

Oh, you can see there is quite some differences in the casing, the German one is even higher than the English one (and I already thought the keyboard is wayyyyy to high on the C64 for comfy typing)....

If anyone wants this unit for parts or repair, make an offer, all the money goes to the marching band club :)

Good, I thought you swapped the chip from your "old" machine. ;)

I did but it survived the test power up on the defective unit  ;D

This is also for my good friend Béla:

I almost forgot how to do this ;)

Having an 130XE for copying is great because it can load an entire floppy into its 128K memory in one go (no floppy swapping :)) with this kind of special XE tools. This tool is a brilliant little sector copier. It also (optionally) formats the floppies during the write process, again saving a lot of time :)

Also, because I have installed a (Polish) Happy into my 1050 floppy disk drive the process is a lot faster than at a standard drive.

Nice, I had no idea how to copy files with Atrari computers, I guess it is a bit more complicated with the 800XL. :)
Thanks my Friend. ;)

Just some extra swaps....:) file and disk management is much easier with Atari (of course) since it is a bootable and DOS oriented system, unlike some other systems which I shall not name ;);)

You can always upgrade the memory of your 800 XL :)

Although copying The discs was actually quite a lot of fun to do for nostalgia's sake, I think Im buying this:

http://www.lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=49

I already have The MyIDE cartridge of course, but lots of games don't seem to work with it.
I think this SD solution is more true to the regular style of loading games and thus probably more reliable.

It is possible to download huge files (for 8 bit standards) full of games.

Might be a good idea to get one too Béla, I still miss a lot of the best games on my floppies and you should really have them too ;)

Regretfully the price of one in a nice box is WAY higher so I'm getting a bare PCB I think.

Do note that this one has to be installed inside an Atari 8bit machine. It's not hard but still quite a lot of work to do neatly. Might be better to save for the complete unit.... Which is plug and play ;)
