Title: 2708 / 2704 Eprom Programmer
Post by: piero.a on February 03, 2014, 09:21:08 AM
Hello everybody,

I just finished setting up a prototype USB EPROM programmer for 2704 2708.

PC program is not finished yet and will be on these days.

I thought of making some copies. The eventual sale price is € 100. Someone might be interested in?

Jawsome work. 100EURO however is far beyond my budget, will you be releasing a parts list as well, so one might do it as a diy-project?
And how about the software, will it be GPL (or other free license)?

Thanks for the interest.

its just to understand how much interest on this project. I can think about the possibility to sale only pcb, PIC and pc software.

My friend use Borland C.

Market is full of programmers capable to program 2716 an up, but try to search something for 2708, if you can find one under 300€ please let me know.

Ah, I was thinking of the license terms for the software. Will it be free and/or open source or should one pay for it?

Well this could fill in a void because the vast majority of new and even older EPROM burners can't burn these EPROMS.

However, I solve this by using a 2716 instead of a 2708. Just need to connect some pins together. Also 2708s require three voltages where 2716 only needs one voltage to run.

I don't know if a trick like that can be done with 2704s too.

However, still very interesting project because there simply are no 2704/2708 programmers around today. If you want to read these EPROMS you also have to resort to doing some tricks to supply all the voltages so there is another function there if you want to read (unknown) one's.

I have too few machines that run these kind of EPROMS to justify buying one though.

please read well 2708 datasheet and you will understand that to write a 2708 is really different than 2716.

I would like only to know who is interested on buy my one, nothing else.

Feel free to make all experiment you want, damage all the eprom you want and even to made an open source project if you like.

I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way.
That was in no way my intention.
Good luck with this excellent project of yours };-P

Absolutely no problem!

I will be happy to explain all the difference and function of my programmer compared to a 2716 programmer. :)

Excuse me ? this is a forum buddy and on forums the idea is exchanging ideas and opinions. If you are not up to that go to ebay.

I KNOW that writing a 2708 is different from writing a 2716 I was simply pointing out that it is possible and VERY EASY to use a 2716 or 2732 INSTEAD of a 2708.

In fact there are many known ways to convert games like Space Invaders to use 2716s only because they are way more reliable because they only require 1 voltage instead of 3 to run.

Most burners can burn 2716s and there is NO risk damaging anything:

Use a 2716 in the socket and bend pins 19 and 21 upwards. Connect pin 19 to ground and pin 21  to +5 volts.
If you use one 2732, again bend pins 19 and 21 upwards and connect both to ground.

I have done this in my Asterock and it works perfectly.

EVEN SO, I pointed to the advantages of a dedicated programmer for 2704/2708's and that there will be a (small) place for it....some people might want to keep the original EPROMS if they are very anal about keeping the hardware 100% original so then a dedicated programmer would be great.

Excuse me but you are speaking about READING eprom. Your asterock is READING data inside 2716 NOT WRITING.
Just to let you know, I had build my first computer and I start to make some assembler program on 1979. It was a kit by Elektor.
I know enough about digital electronic for use a 2716 instead 2708.

This is not eBay but if i'm not completely stupid is written "buy/sell/trade" or not??

If you want discuss about the way to correctly write a 2708 please send me a pm, this is not eBay and is not the right place to discuss about it, or open a discussion in the right place of forum please, I will be glad to answer your questions.

Please read and understand the datasheet before...

Looking good, you still planning on selling it as a kit?
