...not only is it a tedious job, it's also almost impossible to get a perfect result with all the edges, corners and nicks on coindoors.......I think I'm going to give this a try.....

Already got a compressor so this looks cheap, easy and safe.....
Lets find the parts....
-
never had to sand a coin door, i'm glad that "my" power-coater does the job for me!!! 8)
-
The powder coater I've been to for the Galaxian parts is way too expensive. Shame I don't live closer to yours.....
I think I found a friend from a friend who does spray-painting but to be honest, with the expensive Rustoleum spray cans I get a perfect result. It's the sanding that I look up to.
I hope my compressor will be strong enough...they advise a 25 gallon, I think mine is just about 8 or so.... but with the price of the parts (already got the nozzle) it's worth a shot...
-
Mmmmh, interesting!
I might give it a try too sometimes, thanks for the tip.
-
indeed interesting.
i hope its powerfull enough to blast through old paint.
we want a video ! ;D
-
It's a true McGyver solution :)
Biggest issue is if my compressor will be powerful enough.
They indicate the method should work for paint too...
Baking soda I'll have to buy at a toko or chemist's, I bet the toko is cheaper....
-
Amazing idea....I'm excited to see the result :)
-
what about just salt ? its very fine grid
i think if you buy salt in bulk it will not be expensive
-
I guess because salt is corrosive it's not a good idea to use that.
The advantage of baking soda is that it is easy to dissolve in water.
They say it won't do deep rust but it does work for removing paint (see video in first post)
-
What about crushed walnut shells? I use that in my tumbler.
-
Too Big ?
-
Too Big ?
I got two sizes and they are specialy made for blasting. I don't have a compressor so I can not try it.
-
birdcage sand maybe ? i remember from our bird it has a fine grain

7 euro's for 25 Kg, and it smells good they say ;D
Een mengeling van wit zand met oesterschelpjes en zeeschelpjes, en met anijs voor een frisse geur.

As far as I understand they try to avoid using any sand. When using sand, you'll need a blasting cabinet if you want to stay healthy.

A blasting cabinet is a must have for sure...... What's the price for blasting a coin door..... 10 Euro?

Don't you guys read the stuff that I linked to ? You don't need a blasting cabinet when using the soda blasting solution....just eye and a good respirator. There is no way on earth that I can "house" a blasting cabinet..
The reason why you don't need a cabinet is because you don't recycle the sand and the soda dissolves in water so there's no problem if it's "all over the place". Of course it's not a good idea to do it in your home or game room :)
-
yes i read it, but just got carried away with ideas ;)
right, so you got the compressor, take a hose, and shoot that video coindoor ;D

I hear you brother don't worry...........
" what happened to the planet Daddy" ...... "My son, a Dutch arcade collector from centuries pasted convinced the community that soda blasting was the way to go" :D :D
-
so anyone tried this solution ? to see if i need to invest in a compressor ;)
the tutorial used a 5HP compressor, but they seems really expensive. wondering the result with a 3 or 4hp one..
-
I bought a tube but not yet the soda.....
-
Finally got 2 packs of backing soda, all the better because they sell the 0,5 LB (454 Gr.) only here (on the pictures they use a 1 LB package).
This stuff is only available at what we call "toko's and warung's" here, mostly Indonesian/Surinam shops for food. I called the one I remembered from my youth and they said, sure we got it. Drove up there today and they had like packets of 50 gr. each....sigh.....and not the Arm & Hammer brand either.
So I googled some others and the next one I found and called I was more lucky, he had the stuff that I described. Cost €1,95 per pack.
They're cheaper here, but the shipping costs kill the fun until I know if it actually works:

Well........tried it and it kinda worked.....but I think my compressor is not powerful enough.
And the soda comes in "chunks" it's not flowing evenly.
I have no more time to experiment though, need to wrap some cabs......
Now, TOTALLY incidently I have to go to a metal company for my work tomorrow......I just MIGHT put some coindoors in the back of my car and ask a nice question there ;D ;D ;D

in order to derust why don't you use electrolysis method.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Electrolytic-Rust-Removal-aka-Magic/
I use chemical (NaOH) to remove paint, then electrolysis to remove rust
