It's a bit rough that one :( Quite a bit of work to do on it.
Paul.
-
Indeed, but it will clean up nice, i am sure
The special trick you mean the socket and plug ? that is common on zaccs for the marquee lightin, al my zaccs (2x :D) have sockets and plugs for the marguee ..
-
The nice thing about a project like this is that the reward is great. You really are saving this machine. Have fun.

Noooo I though it was a hack and I removed it! Now I have to recover the plug from my rubbish!!!!
-
Wow, you will have a lot of work on this one, but you will have a nice and unique Zacc at the end. ;)
-
Here some pics i found from my zacc to show you the sockets 8)

It's a good project, I've to go...

What a differenece! :spaceace:
Did you sand the wooden parts?
-
It's a good project, I've to go...
...they'd have to pay me 10 times my current salary to go there...
-
Or to know this project can save ten salaries at least...
However probably I 've to skip suitcase I'm sorry... Or we can try a transcontinental webcast hehe
suitcase = eurocade corrected by mi kindle fire!!

Bela sent me a couple of faulty ASTRO WARS boardsets....
Set A: working but a line on the screen, sound board not tested
Set B: not working, sound board not tested.
70% of my time was dedicated to rebuild the wiring :) but the I could make some tests.
1) EPROMS: one from Set A and 2 from Set B were faulty. I reburned them
2) Set A had a problem with a CPU socket
3) after cleaning all pins and sockets Set A was completely working, sound board included.
4) after EPROMS changes and one 2708 socket replaced I could see game working but with corrupted graphics
5) Changing graphic RAMs (3x2114) the game works properly
6) substituting a couple of capacitors was enough to have the second sound board working.
8) I/O work for both boards...
-
Nice!
-
Great job, thanks for the detailed report. :spaceace:
-
Hi Marco! If something goes wrong in Iraq can have your cab in heritance? ;D

Freakin awesome result! :spaceace:
Do you have some spare from those handmade connectors? :D
-
Great job !!! :-* :-* :spaceace: :spaceace:

Great !, thats how a coindoor ahould be treated ;)
Nice red sticker on the coindoor :spaceace: :spaceace:
Does your cabinet have a fan over the powerboard ? or is this cabinet operating without a fan and just uses passive cooling ?

stickers come from Bela :)
no fan at all, only passive cooling. I don't have any experience with that kind of power supply; do you think I need fans?
-
The 5 volt part of my CK gets pretty warm, but the fan that is in my CK is interfering with the image on screen.
that fan makes the image whobbeling, and thats why i now have disconnected that fan.
i was curious if i could continue without fan, so thats why i was wondering if there was any fan at all in your cabinet.
I think it would be possible to run without fan, but i think i will install a simple old PC fan in my CK just to be sure.
(especcially because i don't want to cause a fire at EC2013, or have the game break down during EC2013 ;D)
Guess who made those stickers ::)

-
You do not need a fan. The headsink is enough.
-
Well, the heatsink was pretty hot IMHO, i could barely touch it after 20 minutes.
And that big ass fan that is in there is not there because its not needed i think..
It did still work after 1 hour though..
Look at the size of that B1t# :o
-
But you can get your hands on some server rack fans Etienne. Those are mains powered, a bit stronger and still produce enough airflow. They also won't load the 12V circuit even more....
and I bet they run with less "wobble" on your screen compared to this monster which looks like it came from a fridge or something ;D ;D
-
Yeah, i think i can find something ;)
-
Freakin awesome result! :spaceace:

Hi Bela, I left one pin strip into one of your PCB connectors.
You can use it and follow these steps: ;D
-
you need a pin strip of course; one solder, one cutter and this http://www.pattex.it/it/adesivi/adesivi-per-riparare/riparatutto-express.html
-
Fantastic work! Really awesome!
I'm impressed about spray zinc, please let me know where to buy it :)

About connector I believe you need this: http://www.molex.com/catalog/web_catalog/pdfs/C.pdf
But Vernimark make an excellent handmade work
-
Love the MacGyver method on the connectors Marco ! :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Re: Fan
I used to disconnect them but now I've started to replace them to preserve the electronics a bit longer. This page has the info on replacing the fan:
http://www.zzzaccaria.com/ZaxxonRestoration.htm
It's $10 well spent I think ;)
Paul.

Haha thank you :-P
-
Re: Connectors
Heh, that works too. You can also use shrink tubing on the cable side to make sure if they get bent they'll not short out since there's no housing.
IIRC there's no fan fitted in Invaders and the Astro Wars style cabs. Phoenix/Quasar onwards had fans. One could infer given Quasar is a near identical electrical setup to Astro Wars that it may have been discovered that a fan was needed. I haven't retrofitted a fan back into cabs the never had them, however. The heat problem is not really the game PCB but the monitor - there is a large hot resistor right next to the flyback, and flybacks don't like heat too much...
Coming along nicely, great job! Is your cab missing anything Marco?
Paul.
-
Yes.
1 No cp at all, but i have a good scan and once my graphics designer come back from holidays i ll prepare a repro.
2 i ve a couple of mt90. One without neck board a d the other with a neck for a 14' and a friend of mine (here piero.a) is making a couple of repros...
-
Nice solution for those connectors, thanks for sharing. ;)
Will have to repair the MTC 90 monitor in my Super Galaxians first, the reviring will follow then.
-
Hi,
I have a Astro Wars CP in (what I believe) pretty good condition, see photos below. I got it from a bulk deal many years ago, and I'd be happy to part with it for your resto. PM me if interested.
Bonus: I am also going to Italy next week (Lignano area) and could take it with me, if that helps.
Cheers,
Martin

Lignano is too far but be sure that CP must be MINE!!! hehe :pac: :ghost:
-
Great, seems like all the parts are present by now :D
Just a reminder, we started from here:

-
probably my hardest restoration has been Battlezone...
-
I remember that empty BZ shell ;)
You did an amazing job on that!
-
I love these resto stories..
-
Holy cow...how did you manage to get all the parts for that butchered BZ?? :o
Is the resto documented somewhere?

In that perion I hadn't any forum subscription so I uploaded some pics on my website:
http://www.vernimark.com/arcade/default.asp?PageMode=3&PageMode2=3&GameID=112&tog=1&PictureID=1158#PictureID1158
I needed more or less one year just to find all parts all over the world and I spent really a lot of money.....
regards,
marco
-
Totally awesome job on the BZ! Holy sh.., this is true dedication!
-
Thank you
I'll continue my discussion on the thread I opened about MTC90 neck board because I think I have some news
-
damn >:( :'( ! last night I completed the resto but after several minutes a 2708 decided to die... I burned another one but now board doesn't take any credit.... ufff 40097BP are on the way... do you know any equivalent?
-
Get rid of 2708's and convert board to 2716's.
-
Here is new MTC 90 installed with "small chassis".
Boards and CRT have been cleaned.
Now I've a problem with Degaussing.
-
Looks mint, hope to see it working soon. ;)
-
I've to understand what happened to inpute before!! :)
-
Ok. Restoration is complete. Board has still Input problems...
-
do you like it?

Love it ! wonderfull job :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Personally I love it, great job. ;)
Do you have any idea what is the problem with the pcb?
-
Actually no. Without schematics is very difficult to undderstand the problem. I ll try to backtrace inputs
-
just to say my Astro Wars is now in my gameroom fully working. :pac: :ghost:
-
Love your resto, love this cab..... About the short movie, where you shooting from the top or did the machine really really kick your ass ;D ;D
-
Yeah. :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
