Title: 2kB of Fun: my book on Handheld games
Post by: Blanka on May 19, 2013, 02:55:33 PM
Hi arcade fans and handheld lovers,

Last 2 years I have been working on my book "2kB of Fun". A massive book on our beloved handhelds. Later this week I will let you know when it is going to be released and how to get it, but for now, please support me by liking my Facebook page about the book:

Now that looks like a professional and tight design !

Definitely a lot better than what we've seen from some other books about videogames etc.

Still....don't judge the book by..... ;) ;D

I tried to let the cover be a good idea of the inside. Clean design, lots of original research, nice cutaway drawings, great photos....

Wow, count me in for a copy. ;)
+1

I had the chance to see a little preview some weeks ago, really impressive!!

We will also have some of the handhelds mentioned in the book on display during the Retro Game Experience.

Here some thumbs:

Remember any?

There are some oddities: to show the context, you also see a Speccie, a Videopac G7200 and a Casio calculator. The first kind of killed the handheld in the UK, the second is a nice crossover between table top game and console, the third is the calculator that inspired Gunpei Yokoi.

Yes, choose the perk you like (http://igg.me/at/2kboffun), order it and pay with Paypal.

I found out that money2.nl offers a great option to pay with iDeal. You still have to make a Paypal account, but you can skip adding a bank account or credit card.
We are at 1100 in 11 hours. Going great! Any DLF's on the project yet?

Call me a cheap bastard, but what will be the price of the book without the goodies ?
Title: Re: 2kB of Fun: my book on Handheld games
Post by: Blanka on May 29, 2013, 11:42:39 AM
The store price will be 49.90. It is a HUGE book. Have a look at similar sized titles from Gestalten. They sell at that price too, and this will be even higher quality print.

And I'm doing the all or nothing campaign. I'm not going to make a half-baked book with half the money.
The supporters will get a special blue-metallic inlay version instead of the silver one.

I'm thinking about adding a huge perk on Indiegogo.
A 10000€ one: Handheld Museum in a box!
You get:
225 games used to make the book, about 11000€ value and about 3000€ saving on shipping costs as you get them all at once.
10 copies of the book

What do you guys think?
Title: Re: 2kB of Fun: my book on Handheld games
Post by: Muerto on June 12, 2013, 04:51:02 PM
That is some what a good idea, if you want to let go of all the games......
But im sure someone with the right interest for these handheld games, and huge pockets would be interested in a deal like this.

Yes, and to play the games. Buying things for gathering dust is not one of my hobbies.
Title: Re: 2kB of Fun: my book on Handheld games

It will be difficult to sell them all at once for a good price. People that are allready collecting just want to have what they are missing. Shops and traders would want to pay a lower price for the lot. I hope you can sell it for a good price but it will be a long shot...... That is the reality of collecting. :-\

Status update:
Follow the project on FB to get all the updates: www.2kboffun.com
I want to add even more depth to the project before relaunching it on Kickstarter soon. The main goal is to give insight in how these games made such a fantastic gameplay with only 1 or 2kB. So we are decapping, optical reading ROM's and disassembling code right now. It is really fascinating!

If you have any game wrecks that are FUBAR but still have an MCU, please check the brand and I would love to throw it in Sulphur Acid!
I'm mostly interested in NEC or Mitsubishi microcontrollers as those have proven to be easy to read and we know the instruction sets.
