Title: [Restoration] Superully's Nintendo Row
Post by: Superully on February 17, 2013, 01:35:58 PM

ok guys, time to start working on some machines again! my goal sounds simple, but it's going to be a looong way to get there. here's what i want:

i want to have the biggest / longest / nicest / coolest / most awesome nintendo row on this side of the atlantic - nothing more, nothing less!!! 8)

over the past few years i've managed to aquire quite a few dedicated nintendo cabinets which i'm going to restore in pairs of two (at least that's my plan). since i'm totally out of space in my apartment (and i don't want to drag any more cabs up here anyway), i've moved the restoration line to my mother's place (which is getting crowded with cabs as well ;)).

the first two cabs to get the full superully treatment are donkey kong and donkey kong jr. unfortunately, i didn't take any real photos myself of the cabs before starting the restoration, therefore the following two pictures will have to do

during the restoration i'll have to deal with the typical features used arcade games "have to offer", that is "battle marks" ...

... and dirt!

but also custom-made hacks like this replacement of the original lighting fixture ...

... or a control panel with spray-painted silver buttons ...

... and a self-printed overlay fixed with double-sided tape!

"un-fixed" ;D

in order to fix all the damages to the cab and to be able to clean it properly, i had to remove the front panels entirely. here are the two cabs side by side with the base repaired / repainted, leg levelers installed, the interior with some fresh coats of spray-painted black!

all the damages to the sides / corners have also been fixed and the surface is as smooth as it can get - ready for the paint job a fresh roll of vinyl!!!

to be continued ...

Great to see you're back in the game again!
I'm sure you will have a one of a kind Nintendo row, at least you will be one of the few having the Space Firebird!

a small update: the first parts have been freshly vinyled, glued together and are being installed back onto the machine as we speak - this is turning out really nice!

great work as usual ully !

one question, where do you buy your vinyl (and are they customs colors made on purpose) ? i got a look to all the DIY shop arround, and the color choice is not great, and the vinyl doesn't have the good width.

thanks

thx! everything you need for a DK vinyl restore you can get from  this old game (http://www.thisoldgame.com/categories/vinyl). one set includes enough vinyl for an entire cabinet. i can only recommend it, although the orange is pretty thin, so you must make sure the base is well prepared before installing it, otherwise error will shine through!

Looks flawless, really smooth..

believe me, it is not! when you remove the protective sheet from underneath the vinyl, it becomes so extremely static that it basically sucks in everything around it. no matter how much preparations you do, you will always have something flying around which gets sucked in - like a black hole. unless of course you have a paint booth. but honestly, i can live with those imprefections (believe it or not), because i've come to realize that without the proper setting (which i don't have (yet), you just can't get it to 100%, but i can do with 95% :D

thx guys, hot as hell

Is it difficult to handle the vinyl?

not really, you just have to take your time (best to do it with a second person) and prepare the surface as flat / smooth and clean as possible. i can't even begin to tell you how much i prefer vinyl over paint!

btw, i'm more than thrilled how my swap of colors came out. imho, this is the way those color schemes were meant to go together, but i can already hear andré moaning in the background ... :P

Lets face it guys... they look great. In the 80's somewhere between design and production somebody screwed things up. As you all know from Japanese culture it is not done to criticize your co-worker so  the design guys let it go. Check the Japanese internet the story must be hidden somewhere...... maybe in the New Mexico dessert together with the ET cartridges.  ;D

It's like putting LEDs in a pinball. You can argue until the end of the world, it will turn any nice pinball into a cold fridge. AND you are hurting the originality of the machine. Period.

I will never like it.

or putting LEDs behind a marquee! totally different light color and marquee color as well, not original, but people do it anyway ...  :P

just curious, andré, what do you have to say when you see the japanese donkey kong jr. flyer? looks slightly familiar to me 8)

I think it's fantastic that you have gone to some much trouble to restore theses beautiful cabs
And I think it's funky that you have swapped the colours over and I don't think it matters at all
As Nintendo did kits for all games so you would have found them in any colour

Thanks Chuckie, I was wondering if it might be the same joystick as the one on my Namco Galaxian but although quite similar it is different. Might be possible to use this one on the Jap Namco Galaxian too, I'd have to check the mounting studs.
I'm considering using a Bally-Midway Galaxian/Galaga stick on the Namco because I love the feel of that stick and it is leafs. But that is for another thread  ;D

There not the same on this particular UR CPo but I have seen the rectangular buttons used on a Sega spacefirebird  up right machine
