ok guys, time to start working on some machines again! my goal sounds simple, but it's going to be a looong way to get there. here's what i want:
i want to have the biggest / longest / nicest / coolest / most awesome nintendo row on this side of the atlantic - nothing more, nothing less!!! 8)
over the past few years i've managed to aquire quite a few dedicated nintendo cabinets which i'm going to restore in pairs of two (at least that's my plan). since i'm totally out of space in my apartment (and i don't want to drag any more cabs up here anyway), i've moved the restoration line to my mother's place (which is getting crowded with cabs as well ;)).
the first two cabs to get the full superully treatment are donkey kong and donkey kong jr. unfortunately, i didn't take any real photos myself of the cabs before starting the restoration, therefore the following two pictures will have to do

during the restoration i'll have to deal with the typical features used arcade games "have to offer", that is "battle marks" ...
... and dirt!
but also custom-made hacks like this replacement of the original lighting fixture ...
... or a control panel with spray-painted silver buttons ...
... and a self-printed overlay fixed with double-sided tape!
"un-fixed" ;D
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8086/8480972805_f12b7a76f8_b_d.jpg)
in order to fix all the damages to the cab and to be able to clean it properly, i had to remove the front panels entirely. here are the two cabs side by side with the base repaired / repainted, leg levelers installed, the interior with some fresh coats of spray-painted black!
all the damages to the sides / corners have also been fixed and the surface is as smooth as it can get - ready for the paint job a fresh roll of vinyl!!!

to be continued ...

Great to see some superully resto's again !
-
Great to see you're back in the game again!
I'm sure you will have a one of a kind Nintendo row, at least you will be one of the few having the Space Firebird!

thx etienne and michael! :-*
honestly, i think i'm the ONLY ONE who has a Space Firebird UPRIGHT, but someone please prove me wrong so that we can share artwork ...
as for my nintendo row, i'm still missing a few games i'd like to add (e.g. radarscope and sheriff), but one can't have it all, can you?

There! fixed it for you!

thx michael! btw, i forgot punchout of course - must have one 8)
-
R-Type?
-
R-Type?
how could i forget about that? man, too many "missing" (and expensive) nintendo cabs out there ...
-
OMG, it's on like Donkey Kong!
So cool to have a new SuperUlly SuperRestoration thread to read :spaceace:
-
Nice to see you are back, a Radarscope would be really great in your row, never saw them in Europe. ;)
-
bruno
has eh had one :P
-
Hell yeah! ;D
I'm since looking for an other red cabinet in order to use it for a new DK, and revert back my current Red DK to Radarscope. Red DK are soooo gorgeous :P :-*
-
I think Andre's mario brothers was a radarscope also iirc.

why convert it back?

Originality maybe ? ;)

Yup.

Finally, another Superully Retro Project! Are you still going to swap the colors of the cabs?
-
It does look like it:

sure!!! 8)

Looking good so far! Can't wait to see your progress. Have some Nintendo restorations to do myself when Love's container hits shore :)
-
a small update: the first parts have been freshly vinyled, glued together and are being installed back onto the machine as we speak - this is turning out really nice!

up next: vinyling the sides - not really looking forward to that ... :-\
-
great work as usual ully !
one question, where do you buy your vinyl (and are they customs colors made on purpose) ? i got a look to all the DIY shop arround, and the color choice is not great, and the vinyl doesn't have the good width.
thanks
-
Nice colors. ;)

thx! everything you need for a DK vinyl restore you can get from this old game (http://www.thisoldgame.com/categories/vinyl). one set includes enough vinyl for an entire cabinet. i can only recommend it, although the orange is pretty thin, so you must make sure the base is well prepared before installing it, otherwise error will shine through!
-
Looks very nice....
-
first side vinyled and t-molding installed - went really smooth and almost flawlessly! i couldn't be happier :)

believe me, it is not! when you remove the protective sheet from underneath the vinyl, it becomes so extremely static that it basically sucks in everything around it. no matter how much preparations you do, you will always have something flying around which gets sucked in - like a black hole. unless of course you have a paint booth. but honestly, i can live with those imprefections (believe it or not), because i've come to realize that without the proper setting (which i don't have (yet), you just can't get it to 100%, but i can do with 95% :D
-
Nevertheless....this is HOT STUFF, Ully!! :)
-
Indeed, makes me want to buy another nintendo cab..
Is it difficult to handle the vinyl?
-
Nevertheless....this is HOT STUFF, Ully!! :)
thx guys, hot as hell
Is it difficult to handle the vinyl?
not really, you just have to take your time (best to do it with a second person) and prepare the surface as flat / smooth and clean as possible. i can't even begin to tell you how much i prefer vinyl over paint!
-
Very interesting, if i ever going to restore another Nintendo cab i'll try your method..
-
Nice job Ully :spaceace:

+ 100 ;)
-
fantastic

it's been a looong time coming, but finally donkey kong and donkey kong junior ARE DONE. well, there is a minor sound issue on DK, but i hope to have it fixed shortly. for now, enjoy a few pics of those beauties
btw, i'm more than thrilled how my swap of colors came out. imho, this is the way those color schemes were meant to go together, but i can already hear andré moaning in the background ... :P

got some nice, original collectible donkey kong figures from the 1980s which make perfect keyring hangers! look how different mario still looks when compared to what he is today ...

up next: DK3 , Space Firebird and Radar Scope
-
As all ways with your restos, the outcome is factory mint!!!! :spaceace: :spaceace:
Really looking forward to the Space Firebird!!!!!!
-
but i can already hear andré moaning in the background ... :P
You bet.
Factory mint my ass !
You are screwing history.
Its like painting Mona Lisa's dress in pink because you prefer that color....
It is wrong in every kind of way.
What is next, a green Radar Scope ?
But of course all of that is just MHO. ;D
-
That Mario doesn't look happy about it either, looking very angry and waving his blaming finger at you.
Jr. looks like he can't hold his vomit.....
-

that's what i wanted to hear - and expected to hear. i would have been disappointed if you had given me a thumbs up :P
What is next, a green Radar Scope ?
nope, sorry to disappoint you! DK3, Radar Scope and Space Firebird will all be red!!!
-
It's good we can agree to disagree Ully ;D
Apart from that.....you did some awesome work on those cabs....as always :spaceace:
-
interadasting
I think the front side looks betters than the original
I think the side-side (?) looks a bit less cool than the original
-
Not a fan of the orange DK, but the JR looks very sweet!
-
I have no problem with the orange one, 4 red cabs would have been boring next to each other. :D
Well done Ully!!! :spaceace:
(I also used orange for my latest project) ;)
-
They are looking fantastic!!
I love these colors.
-
Apart from sticking to the Original colors, which could be a debate on its own, i think they came out very nice.
-
thx, i bet you guys wouldn't even have noticed if we hadn't discussed this in detail before. to me, it looks totally natural! :)
-
Lets face it guys... they look great. In the 80's somewhere between design and production somebody screwed things up. As you all know from Japanese culture it is not done to criticize your co-worker so the design guys let it go. Check the Japanese internet the story must be hidden somewhere...... maybe in the New Mexico dessert together with the ET cartridges. ;D
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: Ully
-
So I guess I'm on my own huh.....well whatever, it won't change my opinion ;D
It's like putting LEDs in a pinball. You can argue until the end of the world, it will turn any nice pinball into a cold fridge. AND you are hurting the originality of the machine. Period.
I will never like it.

or putting LEDs behind a marquee! totally different light color and marquee color as well, not original, but people do it anyway ... :P
just curious, andré, what do you have to say when you see the japanese donkey kong jr. flyer? looks slightly familiar to me 8)
-
Well can't you read Japanese ? That flyer is about the conversion-kit buddy !
;D
-
Ully should prep two cabs original style so we can compare when they stand next to each other :D
-
(http://dontdrinkbeer.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/1331415511153.jpg)
interesting flyer. As you can see the logo of Donkey Jr is a bit different. It's Jr and not Junior
-

i know, andré, for dedicated fix it felix-cabs to be precise ;D
-
I think it's fantastic that you have gone to some much trouble to restore theses beautiful cabs
And I think it's funky that you have swapped the colours over and I don't think it matters at all
As Nintendo did kits for all games so you would have found them in any colour
Well done
Can't wait to see them next to space firebird and radar scope cabs
Do you have pics of them ?
-

sure i do, here's SPACE FIREBIRD (marquee being worked on as we speak) ...
... and here's RADAR SCOPE!
man, i wished i had a PROPER workspace to work on multpiple cabs simultaneously. seeing those pics makes my fingers itch ...
-
Awesome
It's funny they used the same bezel for both games
I have a space firebird cocktail and a radar scope kit and it's funny how Nintendo used the same cocktail joy mech from the cocktails in the uprights too
-

nope, the bezels seem to be identical, but the colors are different!
-
What buttons have you got on those machines ?
I think they just used anything as I've seen loads of different types

can you show a picture of that joystick please ?

This is a pic of one of my spare space fever control panels
(http://i.imgur.com/G9aoLXd.jpg)
This is the underside
(http://i.imgur.com/TnDokiR.jpg)
This is it taking apart as you can see Nintendo used the same mechanism
(http://i.imgur.com/6glEeC6.jpg)
This is my radar scope control panel from the top
(http://i.imgur.com/u5H7L97.jpg)
And this is a pic from underneath exactly the same mechanism
(http://i.imgur.com/aCtB1Iz.jpg)
-
And they used the same buttons I've seen on some early uprights as the cocktails too
-
! Rectangular buttons!! Never seen that before - is the same shape buttons used on the Radar Scope UR CP? Little hard to tell from the pic..
-
Thanks Chuckie, I was wondering if it might be the same joystick as the one on my Namco Galaxian but although quite similar it is different. Might be possible to use this one on the Jap Namco Galaxian too, I'd have to check the mounting studs.
I'm considering using a Bally-Midway Galaxian/Galaga stick on the Namco because I love the feel of that stick and it is leafs. But that is for another thread ;D
-

There not the same on this particular UR CPo but I have seen the rectangular buttons used on a Sega spacefirebird up right machine
