Great !
I love it how you used the cardboard marquee as a background of the site  :spaceace:

Following Etienne's Money Money piggy bank project last year I played It in MAME and it is really a very nice game.

Good that the US and EU cabs are identical ! I would choose for the 900E monitor too since it has a bit more standard set up with the HV cup. The 900 cups all became inflexible over the years. Plus the HVT is available AFAIK.

The rusty coindoor should be easy to fix right ? Isn't it supposed to be stainless steel ? At least it can be of good use on another Zacc after removing the rust.

Heh, not everyone is a fan of this game :)

...the cab he used in this video is the sellers picture of my US cab before it was dropped during shipping  :'(

So how much Money-Money did you sue the transport company for ?

We all know you can get rich in the US that way ;) ;)

Oh and that guy on youtube sounds like he just turned 19 so....like ......as if he knows anything....

The trucking companies insurance paid out for the actual cost of the machine and the shipping less $50 I paid to be able keep the remains of the machine...
...to use now, about 10 years later, to restore another one.

You can't here. AFAIK the KLOV forum guys "hacked" it into their system but it's not a regular feature I guess.

It's coming along...

...but still needs the game PCB fixing and the monitor surround restoring.

Not sure if this has been scanned, but here is a scan of the instruction sheet...

It's up an running but it looks like the monitor needs a cap kit  :-\

With the amount of cand you still have to work on I highly recommend getting a good ESR tester, will save you a lot of pointles cap replacements.

All the caps are 30 years old, though, might as well do them all. It's hard to imagine the difference it makes - after the Jackrabbit cap kit, the entire picture geometry and sync was completey off - an indication that more than one cap was bad. I tested a few of the ones that came off and around a quarter of them were no longer in spec - 10uF coming in at 3.98uF, for example. For a -20, +80 tolerance, IIRC very few exceeded the stated value with most measuring under.

But yes, it's a lot of work but worth it to have the monitor solid in the long term. I sigh a lot looking at the potential 35 or so monitors that need working on  :-\ That's a lot of repair debt to work off  :-[

May I ask how you measure them ? With a DVM ?
Title: Re: Zaccaria Money Money Restoration
Post by: PaulSwan on August 01, 2012, 07:26:09 PM
I have a multimeter that has a simple and very basic capacitance measurement feature on it.

Well, to be honest, that is totally useless to check the condition of caps. First of all these are very inacurate when it comes to measuring the capacitance, but most of all that is (usually) not the problem with caps. The problem is that they start developing a "serial resistance", also known as Equivalent Series Resistance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equivalent_series_resistance

You can't measure that with a regular DVM.

Here is a good explanation about it:
http://www.radiodevices.info/esr/esr4_en.pdf

This is the manual of the actual ESR tester that I've got. It's 75 bucks INCL. world wide shipping.

I was in the "cap-kit everything" boat too, until I got this little gem.....and I started to realize that I had been wasting time and money.....esp. time.

Most caps are still good, yes even after 30 years. The smaller the cap, the more likely it is to fail. With this tester you know for sure...and especially because you have such a LOAD of hardware to do.....

The kits are <$10ea and it takes less than an hour to do a chassis. My monitor skills are not good enough to be able to find and shoot the individual cap that's failed, especially if it's a failure mode that's not easy to validate without removing it anyway, in less than an hour. Thus for me personally it's more time efficient to kit and rule them all out.

I bow to your cap hunting skils :)

You don't need to unsolder them, that's the biggest plus :) You just go over all the caps, touch them, check them to a table and presto....

All done! It needed a bit more work that expected to get it running (with the power supply, board & monitor not actually working) but pleased with it now :)

Only too bad for the dents in the tmoulding at the marquee area.

It looks it took a serious hit there  :o

Piece of art, nice work Paul. ;)
The marquee artwork looks extremly cool. ;)

Yeah, some hit there in it's past. Other than minor woodwork and cleaning I don't do cabinet restoration because I don't have any art or fine cosmetic woodworking skills and thus would probably make it worse. Cleaning is just about it for me for cabinet work.

Yeah, Woodworking repairs is probably my weakest spot in this hobby too....I hate if I have to do it. And games that have some imperfections here and there simply show some character....

That is one rare combo on that picture ! :)
