Title: Sharp X68000
Post by: DarthNuno on May 15, 2012, 08:24:17 PM
Well, I didn't know that computer : Sharp X68000

Have a look at this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Zb9AXTDGE).
It's the review of "Star Wars Attack On The Death Star".
Not too bad... simple vectors but good frame rate. I really like that Star Wars version  :-*
Did you already heard about this computer?

A quick look at the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp_X68000) :

Arcade at home :
In terms of hardware, it was very similar to arcade machines of the time, and served as the Capcom CPS system development machine. It supported separate text RAM, graphic RAM and hardware sprites. Sound was produced internally via Yamaha's then top-of-the-line YM2151 FM synthesizer and a single channel OKI MSM6258V for PCM. Due to this and other similarities it played host to many arcade game ports in its day. Games made for this system included Parodius Da! -Shinwa kara Owarai e-, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Strider, Final Fight, Alien Syndrome, Street Fighter II Dash, Akumajo Dracula (Castlevania in other regions, the X68000 version was ported to the PlayStation as Castlevania Chronicles), Cho Ren Sha 68k (which has a Windows port) and many others. Many games also supported the Roland SC-55 and MT-32 MIDI modules for sound as well as mixed-mode internal/external output.

I had a couple of those a few years back!  Unfortunately one didn't work, and the other used 3.5" drives and it was before people found a sure-fire method for making 5.25" disk images on 3.5" disks :(

Now I know but I no longer have the machines! ::)

Lots of great arcade ports on that platform.

Yup, read about them but not very long ago, only after I got into this hobby.

Cool hardware....never heard about it when it was new though...

Yeah the X68000 is really a great system. A friend of mine has at least on of these and a lot of games. The arcade conversions are really impressive and there are IMHO some of the best ports around on this box.

My personal favourite game for this machine is Cho Ren Sha. Check it out, it's really impressive what this machine is capable of:

This game was a giveaway if I remember correctly. And you should definitely check out Nemesis '90 Kai, one of the best games in that series:

The friend of mine knows a lot about that machine. He even has a Mo-Drive conneted to it, so that he can play games off that drive. He has a german webpage about this and other machines: http://japan-retro.de/

I love this machine!

weird that you just discovered the machine.  it's the grail of 90's systems.   with some nuts we tested, seeked rarest shmups games among tosec etccc. we have talked and found various answers to problems.  there are numerous tricks on this loved japanese computer : overclock, harddrives, etcc.

and some nearly false urban legends. it was said that you need a 3-freq monitor.  in fact loads of games run on 31k vga simple monitor,  and many custom hacks/software hacks/menus exist to play the 15k games.

there are rare midi interfaces (years ago, i was the only european to have these extra things about it.  at a point, just imagine two people on the world fighting on last 15minutes auctions of YJA for the only 2 midi interfaces shown from months of auctions ?    a japanese mega fan of x68k... and me  :spaceace:)

yep the 3,5" floppy system.  you just had to wait someone figures the answer ;)   i always trusted on this. it's a korean guy who discovered the good way to refill floppies.  easier than the 5"1/4 method.

there's even something weirder & unknown about it.  none people is talking about ?!!   there is a "stereographic" input on the machine ?!  (as in Fm-towns,   some games have the 3D stereo option)

there is even the only version of.... Prostitute maker  ;D.   imagine Princess Maker ?.. in a more trash way . but you need the mouse to play it.

mine.  only got a couple of hours to test them.  took very long to get them from YahooJapAuctions and i got to quit for a job for years away..
