After weeks and months of hesitation, intensive search, unanswered voicemail messages, postponed meetings and negociations,
I'm now really proud to officially announce that I finally found a home for my Giant Robots!
Yes, yes, yes!!
I found a cheap and convenient place to rent (an old appartment) that will make a perfect gameroom for me.
Monday evening I even received the magic key to THE BASE!
In the coming weeks, I will gather my collection that is now spread in various temporary storage places (again many thanks for that to the many people who helped me).
I will also store there some games from a soon to happen warehouse raid.
A lot of work to come but I'm excited, guys!

Congratulations Chris, maybe you now can finally start working on all those road trip reports? ;D :D ;) ;)

that is sooooooo freaking cool chris (love the picture with the key btw). of course a couple of questions:
- how much space do you have there (that is: how many games can you fit in)?
- how many games are already in your possession?
- how far is it between THE BASE (i dig the name :-*) and your "real home"?
- where are all those roadtrip reports? :P
one final comment (for now): quite a while ago i was looking into renting a gameroom (http://) myself, but eventually decided against doing so because i thought i would go there much less than if i had my gameroom directly in the house. and what about games that stop working? do you drag them back over?
i'm still not sure what i'm going to do regarding my games, renting something out or going the all-inclusive-route, but i'm totally happy that you've found something nice for yourself and the games - well deserved! have fun - and bring on some pics, my friend, because you know: pics or ... ;)

Thanks guys!
You're right about the road trip reports, I'm REALLY late on them    but I will publish them all eventually, I swear!
About the space question, here's a map of THE BASE (as you can see, I have 2 rooms + I even have a kitchen and a bathroom (Yes Nuno, a bathroom, I know it's important to you ;)).
Games in my possession are listed in my VAPS list (http://www.arcade-museum.com/members/member_detail.php?member_id=421618).
But I have a few more coming soon that will need heavy restoration.
Distance from my home: 2minutes walking :spaceace: :spaceace:
Actually this place was rented by my ex-backgarden neighbours, really annoying, noisy and rude people.
Car tuning fans can be really a pain in the *ss at 4AM,... well anytime of the day actually.
Good riddance!!
Now all the neighbours will hear will be some sweet sounds like pewpewpewpewpew brrrrrrrr zapzapzapzap wakka wakka wakka thud thud thud thud...
Pixs of the empty BASE will follow of course ;)
-
Congrats Chris, can't wait for the pics, also from your temporary warehouses. ;D
-
As you wish my Lord, follow me I'll give you a tour.
Here's the main room:
THE BASE_area01

The second room a tad smaller:
THE BASE_area02 also known as THE LAB

The kitchen, perfect for CPO cooking:
THE BASE_areaK

(look closer and you'll notice that they even left us half a cat under the cupboard).
The bathroom, perfect for... uh, well, dumping heavy monitors for instance:
(no water of course, I don't need it)
+ there's even a garden the size of a parking space.
Ooops: Alert! Little ninja invasion!! Sorry I have to jet from here!

Looks great, and it seems you have more then enough room (for now).
-
There's also a second floor but I haven't rented it (yet ;)).
-
Super Cool Chris !
Whats the ETTBR ?
(estimated time to be ready)
I will surely visit your new place chris ! (if permitted ofcourse), its just a little over one hour drive for me..
I drive more every day to and from work ::)
I like the Key pic too !, and also "The Lab" , excellent for repair / restauration purposes! :spaceace:
Do you think you have some spare space for a Frituur in that kitchen next to the "CPO Stove" ;D?
If you can provide the real belgium fries, ill bring the frikandellen ! :D
-
Super Cool Chris !
Whats the ETTBR ?
Thanks Etienne!
Well, for the next 2 months I will use it also as a temporary storage for a future warehouse raid (more on that later).
After that I won't do expensive improvements like painting the walls or putting some carpet on the floor as I'm just renting the place...
...but I already have a few ideas that will cost me almost nothing to make this place look more arcade lifestyle.
So to summarize: there will be playable games in it in approximately 2 months and the decoration will be a work in progress over the year.
Anyway, you're welcome anytime, especially with frikandellen ;) ;)
-
does your wife know what you're getting into here? you'll probably be spending more time in THE BASE than at home. the good news is: she can come over and fix you something to eat :P

Nooooooo, stop teasing ! , tell us more ! :P
See you in 2 months ! ;)
The frikandellen are waiting ! ;D

I bet that Andre can skip his diet for one day and join me that day ;)
ps. and dont forget the spicy sauces.. (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2352.0)

Great place ;) A mix between apartment & game room, great "Arcade Life Style" concept 8)
Can't wait to see the place full of games, food, drinks, girls...
I'm ready for the party ;)
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Nice place for a DLF meet, you are also like 1 hour away from him, right bruno ?

Yeps ! Not too far ;)

Nice to hear the deal came through!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

+1 count me in if there is going to be a meeting (and if i'm welcome of course).
-
Thanks for your comments!...and yes of course, we can definitely plan a DLF meeting there. You're all welcome!
Just give me some time to fill the place with our favourite black boxes.
I have never actually seen all my games lined up, that will be a sweet sight.
For the moment they are at...hum... 6 different places (all in Belgium that's already an improvement)...
I should pick them soon if I don't want to loose 6 very helping friends ;)
-
I could use some input from you guys.
I suspect this room might get a bit humid in the winter time (that's probably why they removed the carpet from the ground).
I don't want to take chances with my precious games so I'd like to build a wooden floor to avoid having the cabs directly touching the ground.
As I'm renting the place I want to do that for very very little money.
The room is about 5metersX3meters
I was thinking of using palets like these ones (http://www.overtoom.be/fr/palette-en-sciure-agglomeree_frM300802.html) (I think I can even get some for free from a friend).
What do you think?
-
Good idea, and when the pallets are layed you can put plywood on top... 9-12-15 mm
(http://image.made-in-china.com/4f0j00QBjEzGirRIph/Veneer-Plywood.jpg)
-
Thanks Michael, I'll gather these things next weekend and start to work on it.
Much easier while the room is empty ::)
-
yes, good plan, only 1 thing comes to my mind, does the door open to the inside of the room, or to the outside ?
If to the inside i think you need to remove the door ;D
-
What do you think?
I think you should solve the cause of the humid conditions if possible. Take away the problem, not go around it. (I'm not a construction expert though....)
I mean, even if you raise the floor according to your plan, the air in the room will still be very humid which isn't very good for the games either !
Good ventilation is important to prevent humid air in your rooms. If nothing else works, get a dehumidifier....or whatever these things are called.

+1 and you should also remove those bushes and trees outside from that window area. ;)
-
By the way, moist and wood = mold.
-
Here's a segment from the V2 construction 8)
I know there won't be any deformation problem on the osb floor because the steps for doing the foundations have been done exactly like an house. Have a look at the previous pictures. Moistures won't reach the the top of the slab. No humidity/cold too, because all the walls + roof have been insulated ;) Did I already notified my father is ...mason 8) The same job has been done three years ago for the first room, and no problem at all ;)
OK, so here's the stuff of the day :
Under the OSB boards, I'm applying an anti-humidity layer
I'm using glue for wood between the OSB boards :
The delicate part : cutting the boards in order to match the entrance ...
Hey, something is missing between the two rooms :P
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/nunov2/plancher/plancher6.jpg)
Better now :)
Finished :-* :-* :-*
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/nunov2/plancher/plancher8.jpg)
:spaceace:
...and after that, put a carpet ;)
Still no problem after 6 years (V1 construction... similar than V2 8)
-
Thanks all for your help, it's just that I will keep heating really low during the winter and I wanted to be extra cautious.
The reason for the possible humidity is that the rest of the building is an unheated warehouse.
I think it will be acceptable though, I mean, until last year there were people living there (this room was their bedroom).
OK, they were a bit weird, to say the least... ::)
I will inquire on the price of such anti-humidity layer next week, nice tip!
Stay tuned :!:
(and regarding the door, I will get rid of it, probably using a hadoken or a light sonic boom)
-
Following your good advices, I managed to find a stock of free pallets and some discounted Berry Excellence anti humidity layer.
This sunday around 22h30, all high on DW40 scents, I was quietly working on the cabs from the dusty roadtrip (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2696.0) huming the soundtrack from Out Run
when I heard a tiny "shhhhh" coming from the bathroom.
I went to check and there was tiny water leak the size of a needle head coming from the "water heater".
Weird because I didn't ask the owner to have the water turned on but anyway,
I put my fingers on the water heater tap to slightly tighten it and stop this leak...
...and then it happened: the tap broke and was violently thrown to the wall because of the water pressure that was coming out from there!
It was like having 4 taps fully opened pouring water constantly. :o :o
I went to turn off the main water but it was nowhere to be found in the room!!!
By then it was 23h00, I tried to call the owner 10 times but all I got was his answering machine :-\ :-\
I tried to call a plumber and he said that he doesn't work at night and suggested I call the firemen. >:( >:(
I did that and they said that they could come and break all the doors until they find the main tap to turn the water off... gloups... ??? ???
23h10: the water had already completely invaded the bathroom and was almost filling the soon to be gameroom.
I called my girlfriend an ask her to search the web for another telephone number for the owner (all I had was is cellphone).
Meanwhile I taped the curtain shower to the water heater and directed the flood right into the toilets.
That was already much better...
Did I already tell you that my girlfriend is just great?
Well, she is because she found not one but two phone numbers of the owner :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
I tried the first... damn! another answering machine!!
I tried the second and his daughter picked up, yes!!!!!
Apparently I woke her up but I didn't give a wet mario about that.
She passed me his father who was sleeping too and I explained the situation.
He told me that indeed I have no access to the main water tap and jumped into his car to open the other part of the buildig where this goddamn tap was located.
15 long minutes later he was there and could finally stop this nightmare!
Wohoooo!! ;D ;D
Fortunately:
-I was there when it happened!
-That Berry layer wasn't already applied to the ground!
-My "good games" weren't already there!
-The water didn't reach the main room where many cabs are already located!
-My super girlfriend is top :spaceace: and could handle a google search under (water) pressure!!!
I guess I'll now have to wait a bit to let everything dry (even though weather is not great for that atm) and then I'll finally apply the layer,
put the pallets and maybe some wood panels on top and then I will finally be able to bring my favourite cabs in there!
Just a slight delay but I just wanted to share this epic failure with you.
I had been warned by Sonic 1992 and others here that water and cabs don't mix well
but I wanted to publish this story to demonstrate with this practical example that they are 100% right.
Keep the water away from your gamerooms guys!
Sorry Mr Berry but you'll have to wait another week before being applied... :-\
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/THE_BASE/damages/4.jpg)
-
WOW! Lucky escape. Water is a bastard when out of control!
-
OMG Chris, this could be a real nightmare! :o :o :o
Anyway, You and your Gf. did the best you can to avoid a bigger catastrophe. ;D
-
This would have happened eventually because the tap was weak. Better now than later!
I'm just glad I wasn't on vacation or something because as nobody lives there, nobody could have noticed that something was wrong.
Water could run for days before I'm aware of it.
I told my GF: that's the reason why I have to go in my gameroom every single day from now on ;) ;) ;)
-
Thank god you was there chris !
ps, berry is an excellent label, (i have it here in my livingroom together with laminate from them ;D)
-
wow, what a well-told amazing story! would you have let the firemen in if you hadn't been able to get a hold of the owner?
-
;)
No I think I would have slept there until the morning and let the water ran through the toilets.
I was getting mentally ready for an awful night (I can't even stand hearing a tap dripping when I'm in my bedroom).
So glad it turned out well!
Did I mention that the owner was slightly drunk when he came to the rescue?
That was about the only fun part for me in this story.
-
Allright, at last the ground is dry now!
This afternoon I cut the palets in order to fit the odd room shape perfectly (not a single 90° angle in there).
Question for you gameroom building pros:
Do you think I should:
_put the anti humidity layer on the concrete ground, then the palets, then the OSB/plywood panels
OR (in order to let the concrete "breathe" more)
_put the palets straight on the concrete ground, then the anti humidity layer, then the OSB/plywood panels
???
last layer will be the cabs of course ;)
-
foli straight on the concrete, silver side down ;)
-
Thanks a lot Etienne, will do that in no time.
-
Damn, I love this picture!
Did you already thought to send it to There I fixed it (http://thereifixedit.failblog.org/)? ;D
Indeed, this is a gamer's dream: to have his own appartment with no space problem!
-
to have his own appartment with no space problem!
no space problem? i'm sure chris is going to encounter that before this year is over ... ;D :P
-
Retrospectively, I find that picture hilarious too. ;)
And about the space issue, I'm afraid it's already too late...
I made a virtual placing of my cabs in the small room I'm "gamerooming" right now and it looks like it's already full...
Oh well, I'll slowly but surely invade the bigger room (which was supposed to be a storage/workshop).
Giant Robots Invasion it is then!
-
You are very lucky!! About 6 years ago I had a flood in my storage unit and I lost about 22 games. My unit was on the third floor so I thought I was safe!!! The water came in through burst mains through the ceiling of the warehouse.
The owners took 2 days before telling me so I couldn't save many of the games as by that time the water had truly swollen the cabinets.

You really lost all those games ??? :o
Sorry to hear that, man :'( :'( :'( :'(

Yeah, I had maybe 45 machines in storage so not all were lost.
