Title: WIP : Badly shaped Galaxian
Post by: Lonewolf on March 24, 2011, 07:16:59 PM
Hello
Just got my hand on a Galaxian in poor condition last WE
Here is the cabinet and the list of identified work to be done
The cab stayed in water.... all the bottom is rotten and rusty :
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322143248-Lonewolf-P1000840.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322143248-Lonewolf-P1000840.jpg)(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322143305-Lonewolf-P1000841.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322143305-Lonewolf-P1000841.jpg)
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322145430-Lonewolf-Bas-2.JPG) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322145430-Lonewolf-Bas-2.JPG)

All the bottom (side, front) is dead
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322145454-Lonewolf-bas-gauche-ext.JPG) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322145454-Lonewolf-bas-gauche-ext.JPG)

The rear bottom panel is missing (quotes?)
Rear panel is present and in quite good shape but the keys are missing. I Expected to see a Midway plate or sticker on top rear but it is missing. Serial number is there thoo and the same than the one found inside (1424)
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322150052-Lonewolf-P1000828.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322150052-Lonewolf-P1000828.jpg)

Sides and kick plate arts are whitening, scratched, pierced and starting to peel
Tmolding is scratched and dying
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322150346-Lonewolf-bas.JPG) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322150346-Lonewolf-bas.JPG)

(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322152605-Lonewolf-P1000848.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322152605-Lonewolf-P1000848.jpg)

Screen is burnt, and i don't know if it's working
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322152723-Lonewolf-P1000862.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322152723-Lonewolf-P1000862.jpg)

Coin door is rusty and painted in black. I though upright galaxian coin doors where supposed to be dark grey?
Coin mechanism is almost non existent. I don't have the door key (need to change key mechanism). Good news, the coin box is present and in perfect shape  ;D

(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322153020-Lonewolf-P1000846.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322153020-Lonewolf-P1000846.jpg)

CP and CPO : it's a butchery! Joystick has been changed and riveted thru the CP
Bezel and smoked screen are missing

(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322153618-Lonewolf-P1000842.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322153618-Lonewolf-P1000842.jpg)

Marquee : Quite good shape but some paint missing (it's plexiglas tho, I expected the marquee to be made of glass on the original)
All metal parts are rusty and need to be repainted
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322153957-Lonewolf-P1000855.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322153957-Lonewolf-P1000855.jpg)
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322154026-Lonewolf-P1000860.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322154026-Lonewolf-P1000860.jpg)

CPB and electronic...the most shady part for me. PCB N° is like on the user manual, but can't tell anything else
Some wires are welded to the PCB and the coin door
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322154523-Lonewolf-P1000835.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322154523-Lonewolf-P1000835.jpg)
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322154702-Lonewolf-P1000859.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322154702-Lonewolf-P1000859.jpg)

On the left above the PCB : ???? (not connected to anything)
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322154828-Lonewolf-P1000834.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322154828-Lonewolf-P1000834.jpg)

On the right (sreen settings and )
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110322154919-Lonewolf-P1000837.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110322154919-Lonewolf-P1000837.jpg)

Here is for the presentation. Any information and advise will be taken with great pleasure
I'm starting on the CP and coin door since the rest of the cabinet is staying in a friends garage

My urging questions for the moment : Where can a find the best CPO (in terms of material and vectorization quality), a NOS joystick (red ball), a coin mechanism and the paint ref for the coin door

Thank you :)

Lone

Now thats a challenge !

sjeezz  that cab is beat up !

it has a good brand joystick though  ;D (ofcourse not original, but its a Suzo (STC Rotterdam - netherlands)
Title: Re: WIP : Badly shaped Galaxian
Post by: Lonewolf on March 24, 2011, 08:02:13 PM
The joystick is indeed from a netherland brand. I think i'll keep it.  ;)

Post by: level42 on March 24, 2011, 08:58:49 PM
Ssshhhh, the worst thing Suzo ever built.....and compared to their usual stuff it's a crying shame.

Poor, poor Galaxian......glad you plan on restoring it !!!

CPO ? Without a single doubt in my mind:

http://www.thisoldgame.com/products/galaxian-control-panel-overlay

I actually helped improving it...SILKSCREEN printed !!

You can also get all the other art there, but the downside is that the vinyl doesn't have the original structure. However, in your case, I would definitly go for it.

The PCB has a hack on it. Probably one of the many games that was made to run on Galaxian hardware. I wonder what game it is ! (Any notes on the EPROMS ?)

At least be very careful, it might be worth something. I'd love it if it were a Hunchback (but that doesn't require a 4 way joystick, so it's probably something else).
Here you can see a number of the games running on Galaxian hardware....again, be very careful, it looks pretty fragile !

Galaxian joysticks are not that easy to find I'm afraid. Try the US forums... (maybe someone has a complete CP).

Here's a pic of the first version of TOG's CPO:

This still has some errors that have been eliminated on the most recent version.

Here's the thread about my Galaxian restoration, but my job was a LOT easier than yours !!!

I think Ive got some NOS galaxian CPOs, will have to check

I definately have a few of the repro Galaxian Marquees I had done left if your interested.

Good luck with the project :) :)

I guess a repro would be cheaper to make. This is one hell of a restoration projects.

Please, go resto for those painted side arts, Lonewolf!
They survived more than 30 years, the whole soul of the cab is in them  ;)
(says the guy who never dared starting the small touch up of his asteroids side arts).

The artworks on your Galaxian side arts are in better shape than to one on mine. If I were you, I would just touch up the paint.

Hello, and first of all, thanks for all your answers  ;)
Level42, i've already read you whole galaxian resto many, many times  ;D
For the CPO, I indeed planed to get the one from thisoldgame since the reviews from forums say it's one of the best available
For the joystick, I may have found the right one on quarterarcade.com
Original Bezel and marquee have been bought on ebay.com and i'm awaiting arrival. Bought the Tmolding has well
The sides are not painted on the wood but on the white vinyl. Since it's in such a bad shape, i don't think i'll have much of the choice : Paint job seems really difficult, I'm no artist and know nothing about painting on such materials --> i'll probably have to replace them eventually (but it's not the priority)
For the PCB, i don't know much where to look to give you informations, i can just tell that the number is indeed a Galaxian
Here some closer pics if it helps

Well the RAL color I used turned out a bit too light so that won't be much help...

Yep, saw it in your galaxian post  ;D, but I said to myself "I don't think he got the right color, original seemed a bit darker to me".

Hello,

As I said by PM I finally used the antracyte hammered paint because I did not find the right color
(http://img2.uplood.fr/free/9ijr_dscf0026-2.jpg)
and the original one before
(http://img2.uplood.fr/free/t9i2_dscf0004xw.jpg)

not so bad isn't it ?
 ;)

Yes it's a nos part, in France for example, this part was hidden by a 'little black paint line', because not written in french of course

Hi Hi  ;)
I read your MP and indeed your color seems closer to the original color, but since you didn't give me a paint ref or picture, i couldn't find the right color when I went back to Leroy Merlin
Know where i could find a replacement Midway plate (not sold at thisoldgames anymore)?
I'm also looking for a Bally Midway factory plate
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110331200124-Lonewolf-plaque.jpg) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110331200124-Lonewolf-plaque.jpg)

Finaly I'm looking for the quotes for (in centimeters if possible)
1) the back lower wood part (wich is missing on my cab)
2) the bottom wooden plate where electrical fuses and alims are placed (mine was destroyed by water and missing)

Thank you

If TOG does not carry them anymore, you may want to look at this post:

Sticker No. 10

i know its not a thick metal plate, but you can stick it on top of a repro piece of alu.

I scrapped a Galaxian (in the US) that looked like it'd been pulled up from the Titanic. I have the wiring loom, power assembly, control panel and some metal strips from the cab. If you're lucky I might have the coin door in another box but it might have been so rusty that I tossed it. The CP is complete and original but rusty/rotten in places. BTW, the cab I scrapped had light bulbs for the marque rather than a strip light.

Paul.

Some more news. Sorry for updating so slowly but the main post is on Gamoover.net
Midway back plate found and received, totaly mint  ;D
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110510200444-Lonewolf-P1000985.JPG)

Original joystick too (with red ball since my cab is green TS/red joystick) gonna be able to finish the control panel resto (Only missing the CPO from thisoldgame) this month I hope
The coin door is almost completely sanded too, i'll make a complete update with pics when painting job is finished.
Lost a lot of money on Ebay marquees (US) that seemed in good shape but proved to be worst than the one I already own....after 2 marquees sent to the bin, I decided to give up and went for a repro sticker. Still waiting for it  :'(

Same goes for the Bezel. I only found a few on Ebay US and no seller agreed to ship overseas. I think I'm gonna have to go for a repro but could'nt find any vecto for the moment.

My biggest concern is on the electronic part.
I thought that the power supply had survived it's bath in water but it didn't. 7V output is only of 4.6 on one of the exits and 115 voltage for monitor is constantly moving (from 90 to 110). PCB high modifications pushed me to consider that the PCB was non working so I bought a new one ...but with no power supply and no monitor, it's as useless as the one I already have
My option is to get a replacement or go for modern power supply with jamma

2 questions on this :
1) if i get a jamma adapter, do i have to make modifications to the board (to make it work with DC current for example?).
2) could someone that made scart connection and TV replacement for their dead monitor explain me clearly how to do it with the galaxian? (i found reports for VGA to scart but not for my situation. Yes, I'm a real real dumbass in electricity)

For the other parts, i'm still looking for an original bezel or the size of the glass (in mm) and smoked screen

Thanks for reading me

I've done that, using the real Galaxian board and use a TV via SCART connector, see that topic (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=135.0).

The plate is 71 mm x 51 mm  ;)

Nuno, I already read your post countless times but i still don't really understand the solution you finaly used. You had trouble using the scart, used different solutions and I thought you got the pcb out and used a computer instead in the end?

The adapter Galaxian board > RGB scart worked fine  :-* ... but I had so many troubles with the board I wasn't able to fix ...... so I jumped into the emulation side of the Force  8)
But you can definitively make that adapter... the best solution if you have a working board.

Hi Nuno.
Did you use the synchro hardware you bought or not in the end? did you use a resistance for the 2V Input? I really can't find the wiring you used on your post.
Considering that my video exit was highly modified by the former owner (for what purpose? I have no idea), i'm really in need of help on this part
(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110510200955-Lonewolf-P1000972.JPG)

And I need the bezel's size please, will try to have the glass cut this WE. Thanks in advance to all Galaxian owners for this info :-*

Thank you but I don't think the Namco cabinet is the same size as the Midway  :-[

For the PCB to SCART connector : No extra hardware used, no resistance at all ... nothing! Just to wrap wires together.
Let me check in my pictures archive if I can find more pictures I've done at the time.

That would be very kind  ;)
did you use the original power supply at the time or a modern 5V/12V?
