I'm looking into options of doing a bulk-buy of 19" CRT monitors. We all know that the CRT is running on it's last (production) legs, and I have a feeling it's about time to stock up on some of them for our games.
I would like to see about how many people would be willing to participate and buy at least a couple of them. Don't ask for prices just yet, but the goal is to be around the prices you see in the US (190 dollars, so let's say about 150 Euro's.
So, post here or PM if you're interested and how many.
-
That' a good idea. Depending the price, I would be up for 4 or 5 ;)
-
This better not be an 1 April fools joke!!
If not, and just to be sure, I suppose that you are talking about CGA monitors, with chassis?
If so, if the price you mentioned is approximately correct, count me in for 5 pieces.
-
i'd also be in for 4 - 5 pieces - depending on the price!
-
Hi,
I'm also interesting in 4-5 units :)
-
OK I'm chasing...(not his one was NOT an april's fool !).
Wish me luck !
-
Good luck.
-
Is it easy to install the monitor in a ms pac man cab?
-
I'd take the same amount also.
-
OK, I put out a shit-load of e-mails to companies I even "just" think they "might" still have them, or maybe have leads to them. Of course the mailing went out just before the Easter weekend so I'm expecting most responses next week.
The thing is that I want to be as close to the source (i.e.China, Korea) as possible, else prices won't be very interesting I guess.
I'll post any responses here for you guys to keep track. Here's the first:
Hello,
I’m sorry, our 20” CRT’s are obsolete. Thank you for inquiring.

Hmmm, that message is not a good sign man
(OT: Andrè, i was waiting for a file from you, did you forget it :D ?)
-
Sorry forgot about the file, I need to hook up the extra HD....will do in a couple of moments.
Side note: Found a European source for Hantarex replacement chassis. Fully compatible with tube and harness. The bad news is that the price is on the high side. WAY more than the Chinese stuff we've seen, but let's assume quality is better.
If anyone interested, PM me.
-
Received these yesterday, cant wait to install them in my feature projects.... TETRIS!
Though they are flat, i think the picture will be Tony Approved!

Not a bad price, but .....flat screen.....of course always better than LCD.....
About the chassis I found, they are from a Greek manufacturer (at least it looks like the make them theirselves). Price is 135 euro though, pretty steep, and that's excluding shipping taxes etc. etc.
It looks like a nice quality chassis though.....

Sometimes a site actually gives you some hope. Like this:
http://www.kristel.com/crt.html
Then I get this reply when I inquire about 19" monitors:
Hello Andre,
The 19” CRT’s you reference are obsolete. There is no more monitors and we can not get parts any further to repair.
How many units are you looking for? I have other options to explore with you.
Thanks, Dan

I actually mentioned a number (30) in my e-mail, and as a wild alternative, a 20' container full of them.
-
Well, you probably knew that they are hard to find. But don't give up yet, you never know. 8)
-
Well he mentioned "other options" so I e-mailed and asked what that would be.....probably LCD alternatives but who knows....
I'm not giving up at all ;)
-
Too bad this one is NOT CGA :'(

What chassis is now delivered on the monitors you bought Michael ? (Pic ?)
I wonder if it will handle the flat-screen OK.... ?

So, I get the new Suzo(-Happ) catalogue today. I was expecting the worst so imagine my COMPLETE surprise to still see CRT monitors available ! However, almost all of them are VGA. BUT I see one 20" CGA replacement monitor !!!! WOW I think. A couple of years ago I asked if they could deliver the Vision-Pro monitors that Happ was selling (because of the merger they told me they could now deliver anything that Happ sold as well). However, they refused the CRT monitors because of their weight.... :(
So, now there's one in their catalogue, BUT the sadness soon came when I saw the price: €349 EX.VAT (19%) so a whopping total of € 415,31.............
The product code has a H before it. This indicates that it is a Happ product so I guess they added a shitload of shipping costs.....
Also they mention: while stocks last....
Gonna give them a call tomorrow if that price is not a typo ;)
The catalogue that I received is called "Gaming" which is a nice "hide" word for money-gambling. Not sure if they still have any other catalogues here. Compared to the catalogue I had before this, a lot of arcade controls stuff has gone. Not even the famous Suzo Joystick anymore !!!!!!!
No real push-buttons (only the new "modern-day" stuff). No leaf switches anymore (I heard they sold everything to flipperwinkel.nl).
Still plenty of "general" parts that still come in handy in our hobby though...
-
Guys, I strongly suggest anyone here to go with Muerto's offer for brand new monitors, as long as you can fit in a 21" tube in your game. The offered price is a great price IMHO.
One of my biggest hopes just informed me that they could only deliver 14" monitors still and that was it !
I do wonder why the hell they keep the information on the other models on their site if those are no longer available.
So, the only option I still see now is (maybe) some US source(s). However, my goal was to find a far-east source because that's also where the US guys get their stuff and thus would save a lot of costs.
I did get an alternative suggestion: find used 19" VGA monitors (they are often free to pick up or close to free now) and use a CGA to VGA converter. Those things are pretty cheap now today, there are several offerings to get them and I also got an offer. When there's enough interest I could do an order but I'd need at least 10 orders.
The thing with this is that of course you will get a smaller dot pitch compared to a real CGA monitor. But I'd still hugely prefer this over any LCD option.
For now I say: rescue heaps of used 19" TV's !!!! They are very cheap everywhere 2nd hand. You can either use them through SCART or maybe use the CRT only with a separate chassis. The best is to get those rather new models that have electronic set-up (with menu's).
Alternatively, if you guys want, I could try contact some US sources and see what the price will end up in a bulk deal. Don't expect them to be cheap though....
-
Too bad, but hey, 19" CRT TV's still are pretty easy to find. Perhaps that indeed is the way to go.
Another option could perhaps be Paul from Paul's 50's. He did mention to me that occasionally he brings over stuff from the USA for other people when there is space left in one of his containers. Maybe his contact person could arrange something over there. I suppose Paul would want a fee for it, but that can't be that much I suppose.
-
About the chassis I found, they are from a Greek manufacturer (at least it looks like the make them theirselves). Price is 135 euro though, pretty steep, and that's excluding shipping taxes etc. etc.
Maybe you can make a special deal. Greek are in much trouble today :)
-
True. The amazing thing is that these indeed look like they make them themselves, esp. to fit Hantarex tubes.
But the chassis price is still too high IMHO.
Maybe 100 euro. The other chassis from the far east are about half that price. I think the Greek one's are probably better quality though...
-
I can't believe it, after numerous of NO's from about everywhere and another NO from even a US source that had plenty of CRT monitors on their site still (Betson) it seems I just hit the jackpot.
Of course we are talking far east contacts and the price look promising BUT we'll have to look about transport of course.
I'll have to study the e-mail a bit further, but this is looking promising ! ( Although in all fairness, we're talking 21" CRT's here but true BULB one's as they mention ;)
-
This is good news, we now might have two sources for CGA 21" monitors. :)
-
OK guys, I'm up to the point where they can ship me a test-monitor. However, shipping price is pretty hefty.
I'm looking if some of you guys want to chip in. Not sure what we should do after the testing though....maybe have a lottery to see who gets the monitor ?
Thing is, I want to have one here to test, look if it fits etc. etc. before going in DEEP (Which means ordering a lot of monitors)
Anybody who wants to chip in, please drop me a PM. Thanks !
-
Hi,
I can get 19"WG monitors brand new in the box 150E a piece.the Opp I know has about 30+ left, bought them for replacements etc but never used them went the LCD route. If anybody is interested
let me know and I can check it out.I have used a few and they are fine.Shipping would be up to you.

-
Hi Mitch and welcome to this board.
Sounds good :) Where are you located?
-
Cheers based in Ireland.I will get some photos as soon as I can.Love the site, keep up the good work :)
-
this sounds indeed good...
-
Interested. :)
I suppose that it shouldn't be too expensive to ship a bunch of monitors (as much a spossible) in one lot to mainland Europe.
-
sounds great!!!
-
Sounds good, but the shipping to me could kill it :'(
-
What model WG is that ? Is it Low-res ? (CGA ?)
If so, I'm very interested in a couple.
-
Well, if it helps people, I'd be prepared to get a van and bulk pick up monitors from Ireland so thats one step closer to europe... now if we spread the cost over everyone it'll be a small price ramp, then someone does that by meeting me and spreading that I figure it'll be 10-20E extra! maybe even see if the guy will go a bulk deal if we took them all!
-
good idea, rav! perhaps i could come over again and on my way back drop off some of those monitors in belgium. let's see how this goes ...
-
Hello all again,

That sounds like a great idea. Perhaps we should renew our interest check, so that we know how many monitors we are talking about. And the more, the better. It should be possible to organize a group buy for 20+ monitors to be transported to mainland Europe. I'm still interested in 4 or 5 of them. And if needed, the boxed monitors could be stored temporarily (until end of August or so) free of charge in my storage in Rotterdam (if there still is place, André?)
-
Raises hand... I'll take a handfull as well!
Count me in on a bulk buy!
Cheers,
Marco
-
I would take at least 6 and likewise, could store them at my place should there be a need
-
he said he has 30+, wants to keep 10+ which leaves around 20 for us guys. i'd be in for 3 to 4!
-
Amazing!
Please, count me in too for 4-5 :)
Thanks
Franck
-
Yeah count me in for one!
-
Hey! Count me in for 2!!!
-
Count me in for one :D :D if there is still one left

Sorry for not getting back to this topic sooner, having serious PC issues.running on dial up,its taken me 20min just to get to this
page. >:(I will be back with the Opp on wed,I will check to see how many are available.
I am open to ideas as to the best way to go about this,so as many people get a few monitors.I said I wanted 10 but if somebody is going without I am willing to reduce that number.
I am not big into shipping these,so if some body wishes to arrange this great,or as mentioned collect these sound like a better idea.
I should be back online late wed or early Thursday all going well and I will update.
Cheers Mitch

No problems Mitch.. Just been going through the numbers since you first posted...

If my maths is correct thats bang on 40 monitors.... I have used peoples maximum figure (i.e. ully's 3-4 being 4, thwockers technical term "handful" as 5 ;D)
So then its over to Mitch to haggle for a good price and check with op he has that quantity for sale.
Then we have to organise the funds - I would be happy to be a central point for the amasing of the funds - thou as I know allot of you will want to bank transfer I'll phone my bank with regards to a brand new Euro account perhaps? Bearing in mind we're talking 6000 Euros here + van and fuel and boat tickets

Hey don't forget to pick me up on the way Rav, i'll come along for shitz and gigglez.

-
5 for me
Cheers,
Marco
-
1 please ;D
-
OK, how are we going to organize this? If Rav can collect the monitors, as he suggested, then one or two of us, with suitable transportation, should be able to collect them at Rav's place, bring them somewhere central on the mainland where we all can pick them up. Payment should be done in advance I suppose.
-
Yeah, I spoek to Mitch via a PM today and would be prepared to go... I asked and perhaps ask you guys if you let me get onto this next week rather than this one - I've got a meet at mine on Saturday and its "all hands to the pumps" to get everything ready this week! :)
-
one week, two weeks, three weeks, who cares! :D I'm sure we all don't mind to wait because these kind of opportunities don't happen often.
But what about the prices? And payment? How much will the monitors each cost when they have arrived at your place, Rav?
And who will be able to pick them all up from Rav's place in one lot and transport them to a central place? Any volunteers (who have access to a small van or something like that)?
Based on the shown interest in this topic most monitors will go to Holland, so maybe Holland is a good central place. ;)
-
I don't have a van (I even don't know if I can put 5 monitors in my car) but Holland is fine for me, it would be a nice occasion for visiting arcade collectors from Holland ;)
-
I will volunteer for the trip but I don't have a van or anything...
-
I have free temporary storage in Rotterdam, at least for another few months.
-
We need a really cheap van....
-
Don't have a van but if needed I will also volunteer.
-
To have a better overview, I opened a new topic for this possible group buy: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1769.new#new
