So today I was lucky to get a sneak peak at the Play Belgium / Game On exhibition which opens officially tomorrow in Brussels.
The location is pretty neat, the selection of games is interesting. Obviously, if you've got a bunch of classic games at home you won't be as amazed as others but it's still worth a visit, if only for the atmosphere. The lighting is pretty low, which isn't always obvious on the photos, and helps.
It's actually more than just "Game On", it also includes workshops from schools on game design, 3D etc. Also other applications for game technology like medecine. Maybe not as interesting to the classic arcade collector but probably more attractive for school visits etc.
Some photos below. The whole series is on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/onepointzero/sets/72157623046350382/)
Due to the lighting (and my basic photography skills), it was difficult to get great shots but it should give you an idea.

NAMCO PUCK MAN !!!!!!

Do you think they will notice if I switch it with my bootleg PuckMan ? ;D ;D ;D ;D
So, when are we going ? Until when does it last ?
Could be a nice x-mas meeting spot ;)
I love the setting, it goes REALLY well with the games !

F*** - MANEATER!!!
thx for the pics, i like them a lot, you captured the atmosphere quite well. is it worth going there for a forum meet?
-
Thanks for the ride liquidx :-*
The games are mostly the same than the ones I've seen in UK, but I really like the way there are displayed here :) Brussels is only two hours from here, I'll definitively check this 8)

Crazy fans or part of the expo? ::) ;)
-
Let's hope it's not this crazy French guy  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIrvpn3k9A4
or the expo will be ruined :D
-
Very good pics liquidx, I can feel the atmosphere. I sure want to go there some time soon. The show is there for 4 months, so until 18 april 2010 (18 october 2010 as mentioned on the website can't be correct). As said before, this would be a nice occasion for a group meet.
website: http://www.playbelgium.be/en/index.php
Let's go to the event together. I am willing to organize something if there is enough interest:
- we gather at a pub
- after some time we jointly go to the event
- afterwards we have a meal in a restaurant (Italian or something like that)
- the diehards can go and get drunk afterwards :D
Exact times will follow. Everyone gets and pays his own ticket (€2 discount if you buy it over the internet), pub and restaurant costs will be split over the number of heads. We have to pick a date. Let's say on a Saturday (opening hours from 10 AM to 9 PM). I suggest 3 dates:
- 23 Januar
- 6 Februar
- 13 Februar
Who wants to come, with how many and when?
I am in for one person, preferred date 6 Februar (1) or 13 Februar (2).
-
where does all those nice games come from?
The UK originally I believe. The Star Wars cockpit came from ColinD on Jammaplus if I remember correctly, don't know about the rest.
It's been traveling a while though, most recently in Taiwan.

Part of the expo. All girls in there too :)

Just a note: the location is in a dodgy neighbourhood (underneath the old slaughterhouse of Anderlecht), you'll want to drink and dine elsewhere.
As far as meetings go, I live 15 minutes walk from there so I'm open to it :)

Did they rent your Computer Space Bruno?

Like an arcade ! :)

I just went there. Although it is nice to see all those arcade oldies it is a shame you cannot play those games except for the computer/consoles.
I especially liked the Maneater. Never heard of this before but it is really a fantastic cabine. Kinda hugh too.
If someone can point me out how to post photos here I will drop some later.

Nope, it's not mine 8)
But they are the same cabinets

By the way, here's the first thing you've to do when you'll see Computer Space & Pong ...both 'holy grail' in arcade collecting :D

upload them to some webalbum, or "homepage space", and the "paste" the link between (img) (/img) using this button (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/Themes/default/images/bbc/img.gif)
actually the ( & ) needs to be replaced with [ & ] in order to make it work ;)

HUH ? AFAIK you _can_ play the arcade games except for Pong and Computer Space (and the PDP) ?
They look playable enough and the show was always advertised as such.
If none of the games are playable I see _very_ little use of going over there...

They are nearly all playable. The non-playable ones are computer space, pong and maneater.
Most consoles are playable too.

Ha Ha
Great riddler,
Wow it seems like pong and computer space get his attention ;D
Anyway great hilarious moment,

Yeah, Got it 2 year ago 8)
not this normal version but The original Japanese version
directly from a collector in Japan with which I swap a DL + some spare parts
Only for shipping it cost me a fortune but it is the only version with the original
japanese control panel
Mav
Will post some photos tomorrow that I've got some time (finally!)
-
I thought this actually _was_ the Jap version ? The blue Taito one I mean ? If not, is this UK built then ?
-
You went there very fast Bruno. First day?

Nope, I went at the UK event, three years ago ;) See here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=192.0).
But I'm curious to see what happens in Brussels, especially if other members plan to go there... the idea of a meeting sounds cool :-*
-
Yes. Problem is I am already planning a visit to Ully's place in january...
I was more thinking about going the x-mas holiday.

Not yesterday. Pressing player-one did nothing on some I tried. Only tried on the first couple of cabine though. No-one else was playing games either.
Anyway, I had great time playing the Amiga 500. I have many good memories of this baby.

I will be visiting on dec. 30 afternoon with my family. Please tell me that the games work and they are on freeplay. Else I will have to bring my cord-less drill and remove the locks like I normally do...... :D
-
Oops, can't make it dec. 30 !!! I've got on-call duty that day (I made a mistake looking in my agenda !)
New planned date is sa. january 2.
-
Looks like there will be a "group meet" on saturday jan 9.
Here's a link to the official site (also in English):

Finally going there this saturday. Do Belgiums celebrate "Carnaval"? If that is the case, I shoud dress up as Pac-Man I guess.

Or like this....

Good hint. Are they difficult to find?
Kind of expensive for a "museum" I saw. 20 euro's! But there's a lot on freeplay I guess.
-
Could you please have a look (take a pic) of the high scores, esp. Bererk and Centipede......
I want to put my initials on those machines ! :D

They're in every newsagent in Flanders & Brussels, and here and there in the rest. It's this week's though so it's probably being replaced soon if not already.

I read the current edition is from tuesday. So it should be available. Is it the Humo with the Assasins Creed disc?

That's the one.

Been there yesterday. A bit difficult to find. The place at street level was crowded with an big week market with tons of nationalities buying meat, veggies and clothes.
The things surprising:
- It was big! Did not expect this much stuff
- Classics played not that good, I'm much better at my Mame machine, but when I visited Bruno the classics performed much better. Guess he's doing better maintenance.
- Galaga's fire button was a tough BTCH. Only 49950 on that one.
- The researcher linking classic cinema and games did an awesome job. Incredible movie setup!
- The Japanese section had a great train simulating game. I missed a station, and a passenger got mad and pulled the emergency break.
- It DOES have a Katamari Damacy PS2 setup! Woohoo!
- The game-art projects were very nice. Hope I can find someone to put on my pc.
- The portable Puck Monster was an awesome plastic toy
- Forgot how cool the machines by Sinclair looked
- It was a pity to see Computer Space to beaten up
- The original PONG machine looks great in real
- Best original arcade machine IMO was the Space Invaders one. Amazing how the mirror setup and background work in that game. Cool cabinet too.
- Kids all play in the XBOX 360/PS3/Wii/DS section. Guess they don't get the old stuff.
- Section 18+ was occupied with 12-
- Great expo, but I really doubt if the location is good. The atmosphere is nice, but it was not getting much visitors I felt. The day counter was at 70 or so. This area of Brussels does not look like a great tourist teaser. And I think the price is a bit steep. With 10 euro I think you might attract a big group that likes to give it a try. Now it is totally focussed on the real fans. I think this I a big pity for a great collection like it is.

Thanks Blanka,
On my own machines I should be able to beat those scores. Would it look weird if I brought my own CP's and ask if they can put them in ;)
