Title: [Roadtrip] First Time on the Road in 2010 (Championship Sprint)
Post by: Superully on January 07, 2010, 09:16:36 PM

well, the new year is just a few days old and i'm back on the road again. i couldn't resist the temptation of bidding on the atari system 2 championship sprint which was listed on ebay germany a couple of days ago. and i got it CHEAP  ;D

although the seller is located in switzerland, the distance to be covered is less than other roadtrips i have done in germany.

here's what's coming up

although it's cold outside and there's still a lot of snow lying around, the road conditions should be ok. looking out of my kitchen window, everything is still peaceful and quiet.

for the record

(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4254795774_f0604d668f.jpg) (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/4254795972_6f07474038.jpg)

and the travel projection

for the road, a nice little breakfast

not a lot of traffic on the german autobahns - and luckily no snow or ice

all of a sudden, the sky clears up and a bright yellow object appears. when did i see it the last time? it takes minutes for me to remember its name, but finally i succeed: the beautiful object in the sky is called SUN!!!  ;)

in case you guys are having a hard time, too, let me help you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun)  :P

i'm parking my car on one of the rest areas to take a break. without realizing it, i'm pulling up next to that shiny mercedes

have a look at the licence plate - what a coincidence: SWITZERLAND  8)

speaking of switzerland, without any further delays i arrive at the german-swiss border

"on the other side" i soon have to realize that i've entered a country i've never been to before. even the cows look different  ;)

a winter wonderland

but the roads are safe to drive on

this is where i have to go

i still wonder what's for sale down there

"captain, we have just reached our destination town!"

the cab is located in a storage building in an old army wing - i love that photo  :-*

i'm giving the seller a call that i have arrived. unfortunately he's telling me that he had to leave on an urgent matter, but he's sending down his daughter to open up the gate. sadly, she's in a hurry, so we don't have a lot of time for pictures :(. this is the only one i'm able to snatch

championship sprint in the pit lane  :D

crossing back into germany. the police are there, but they are busy going through a car just ahead of me, so i manage to slip through customs unnoticedly  :ghost:

by the side of the road i'm spotting this strange landmark: little paris - i wonder what it's there for  ???

while driving home on the autobahn, i see a sign pointing towards germany's largest source of fresh water - the AACHQUELLE. "hmmm, never heard of it", i think to myself. but roadtrips are not just there for the games, but also for educational purposes and since i'm a teacher of geography, it's a good chance to educate myself a little bit further on that topic. so off the autobahn and on towards the water ...

as a had expected, nothing spectacular, but it's a nice short walk around a pool of water which i'm happily going to do

suddenly, i hear a strange noise, something like a donkey shouting! of course, i can't resist and have to check out where the sound is coming from ...

ah, here's the evil-doer - you can even see him (her?) shouting!

i don't wanna get too close, because i've heard of people being attacked by a goose. but i manage to take another picture

puuuh, what an adventure  ;)

time to head home (for good this time) and unload the game. once this is restored, it will look superb next to my paperboy  :-*

the end results are in

(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4014/4254029867_84f1cbeeac.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2541/4254795178_565874e42a.jpg)

one continent, two countries, 662 kilometers, 9 hours 10 minutes on the road - this roadtrip is OFFICIALLY OVER!

HOLY F, that's a STEAL !!!

Lovely road-trip pics as always, and finally I know what you teach. I've always been meaning to ask but never got round to it...

So, is it working ??

i haven't plugged it in yet (and won't be for a while), but the auction description stated that it has some kind of monitor issue. there was one photo listed which shows the status of the machine when turned on (i have NO IDEA whether you can hear any game sounds)

andré, you told me that it looks more like a pcb than a monitor issue. what do you guys think? try to get a new working pcb first?

Which monitor your machine is equipped with? I hope you are more lucky than me (mine is a "never-had-spare parts" Zenith WG  :'()

it's a med-res monitor, but i don't know the exact details, because i've only got one key for the machine - but there are three locks. unfortunately, thos one key only opens the coin box door, not the door to the coin mechs and even worse not the back door. i have no idea what's inside that cabinet, but i expect a lot of dirt because the whole machine is damn dirty.

does anyone have a piece of advice on how to get those tubular locks open properly?

hehe, cant you drill it out, or reach it from the back door?

backdoor: there's also a lock without a key  >:(

drilling: no electricity in the shed, will have to move the game to another location. BUT: how to drill out that type of lock?

I HATE IT WHEN THE KEYS ARE MISSING

any suggestions regarding the monitor? i have a huge package coming in from the usa soon and could fit in a CS pcb. i'll try to move the game tomorrow and plug it in ...

Nice catch, only 20,50€ :D

Regarding the monitor, you'll have to plug it in and see for yourself. Then you can post the details here and someone will probably know whether it's the monitor or pcb ;) The image looks like garbled graphics, so it could be a pcb issue, but it's too hard to tell from the small picture...

I'd like to see a video when you open a lock with Muerto's method :P ;).

Yes, it looks like the monitor is working, you should be able to see some kind of pictures, but it seems just a frozen screen.

thx guys, i'll get the board over here tomorrow, remove / reseat all the roms /rams (?) and see what happens then ...

if there is a rom / ram (?) problem, is it easy to have those replaced or would it be better to buy a working board?
Title: Re: [Roadtrip] First Time on the Road in 2010 (Championship Sprint)

(ep)roms can be re-burned by someone with an eprom burner in most cases, unless the eprom is defective. Defective rams have to be replaced, lots of rams from the 80's are easily available.

At least that tractor seems to run smoothly by the sound of it  ;D ;D ;D ;D

ROM or maybe 5V too low/high is my guess.

It's almost working man !

Stupid French plugs ! The Belgium machines often have these too.

Now go and fix that plug WELL you amateur !  (Look at the gap between the two halves ! T-t-t-t-t-t-t....do you want to get a shock ?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That's odd, in Belgium we have these plugs, the earth pin is in the wall socket:

Uhhh, I totally stand corrected Petieken, you are right !!!

The thing is that your ground pin is in the wall socket, but some (older) plugs ONLY have that hole to accept that pin, instead of the "edge" connectors like we (and the German) use. The plug you picture there is "all round" for both systems and what you usually see these days.

The Berzerks had this plug, but f.i. the Centi's had the older type.

i know, shame on me  :-[! BUT: while installing the new plug, i lost the screw which held the two halves together, so i thought "screw it" and plugged it in like that. of course, that amateurish installation will be fixed later on.

Great trip !!!

 ;)

I'm not worry about what i seen on your vid!

AS many said

1) check the 5V
2) clean the board without the eprom (wash /soap)
3)let dry
4) brush gently the eprom chips
5) use KONTACT (product for electrical contact)
6) Plug again

7) Enjoy !!!

 ;D

I had quite the same problem with a IKARI board and that's what i done and it work fine now !!

Of course my method is not 100% working for all case but most of the time it works !!!

(here's is how i've done   http://lejrs.e-monsite.com/rubrique,ikari-resurrection,428058.html (http://lejrs.e-monsite.com/rubrique,ikari-resurrection,428058.html) on my web site )

if your water is hard you can rince with a non mineral water (water for iron) it prevent white spot on the board

and there's only one rule WAIT UNTIL IT's DRY !!!!! really dry (don't use hairdryer) co's too hot

;)

You can use a hairdryer, "mine" has settings for temperature and if you swing it around a lot it won't heat up much.

I would only wash the board as a last resort though....jut MHO.

thx old school! the information on your website will hopefully come in handy - i'm always concerned about electronic components and water, but i will give it a try. parts of the board are really dirty ...

no time to clean the boards before the weekend though, this will have to wait!

Never had a problem doing this, and I've done about 15-20 pcb's by now. :)
I just blow most of the water out with air and let them dry further near the heater for minimum 24 hours. When I'm lazy, they stay near the heater for a whole week. They sure are dry by then! ;D

Yep Petieken, I know. I've seen lots of people do it. I still have my reservations though. Just my personal opinion.

I admit I was hesitant the first time I put a pcb in the dishwasher. After the drying and the first test I was very happy that it still worked ;D. The pcb's look brand new when they come out :). Now after I've done all those pcb's I'm not worried about eventual damage anymore. There's of course always the first :), let's hope not ;D.

If anyone ever wants to try this, this is how I do it:

I spray some instanet (window cleaner) on the pcb before starting, that dissolves the heavy grime, crud. Then I turn on the dishwasher at 50°C. Then I stay with the dishwasher to stop it when the dry cycle starts (I've read the dry cycle is too hot sometimes for some components).

The most important thing is to make sure the pcb is bone dry before plugging it in again.

I knew it ! :) Wahoooo ! Let's skip the Berzerk rebuild and any other repair work and just play this (and WOW, and Paperboy and Toobin and.......all weekend  ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, looking forward to try this ! I played this (or a _very_ similar game on my Atari ST in the 90's but nothing beats a proper steering wheel ! :)

Interesting that they put in both Pokey(s) and Yamaha sound chips....guess the POKEYs did the sound effects (explosions etc) and the Yamaha the fancy (music?) stuf...

BIG boards by the way !

Congratulations this is a REAL steal !

in order to play WOW you must first fix the monitor, in order to play paperboy i must first try to piece together the 1246 parts of the steering assembly, in order to play toobin we simply have to hit the start buttons  ;)

Seriously, looking forward to try this ! I played this (or a _very_ similar game on my Atari ST in the 90's but nothing beats a proper steering wheel ! :)

in order to play championship sprint, we have to get it up into my apartment first. are you up for it ? the control panel is BEAT and BENT, the left wheel is hard to turn (right one is ok though) and the wheels itself are DIRTY. the entire cp unit will have to be replaced, but i'm already working on that!  ;)

Congratulations this is a REAL steal !

20 euros for a working championship sprint - not too bad  8)

I found the posts whilst looking for info on google as i've been working on both of mine last week

Champ sprint now nearly complete and working, just got some multi coloured text on odd screens but otherwise perfect and waiting for spare wheel to turn up

Paperboy has vert sync fault on monitor, controller needs looking at but board all working now :)
