We had an idea over here and I wanted to ask you guys what you think about it.
A few weeks back Bruno asked the Board about the high score-tables for game rooms. I sat down with my buddy Jochen Hippel (told him to get an account here but he still did not manage to do so :D ) and we came up with another idea. We think it is quite a cool one but we want to know what you guys think before we are starting with the production of a prototype.
So... this is what we have in mind: We would like to produce a save kit that is not only able to save highscores on your machine but also send this score to a website that saves and compares the scores. You would have a highscore table that compares your scores with your friends and with virtually everybody who owns such a kit. On the net it is not limited to 3 or 5 scores. It would keep track of every score that comes in. A hughe table that you could access from anywhere via browser.
The cool thing is that you can plug your cab in your router.. and the save kit sends your scores to the table... with the dip switch setting in mind!
This would work with pretty much every 8bit-game... but since I am a big big fan of Galaga 88 I asked Jochen to think about a save kit for those machines as well and he came up with an idea for these games, too.
What do you think? Would you use something like that? After all it only makes sense if we can build up a little community that likes to share scores and compete against each other.
Would love to get feedback from you guys.
Greetings!
Stefan

Coul be nice. This means that the save kit uses some kind of internet protocol to get access. It would be a good feature if the kit works wireless and if you can access the kit also through a website, like in a wireless LAN. Or is this too complicated?
-
I don't understand completely. So this would be a generic savekit for several games? And how is it installed? ???

wireless is possible for sure. it is a question of the price. we will figure out how much this would be.

pretty much the same way the save kits are installed today. it simply has more features. we would keep it as easy as possible.
it gives you more features to compare and compete with your friends.

Sounds very COOL! :pac:

Sounds very COOL! :Pac:
I will set up my basement with this. But I do understand everybody who wants to keep the board original.
Let´s see how the protoype turns out. :)
-
Sounds very interesting and I for one would really enjoy seeing the highscores of other players. And I have been looking for a highscore kit for my Pengo and Kungfu Master ;D
-
Wait a minute, someone who is not capable of registering for a forum is going to build this ?
Sorry couldn't resist ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I think that it MUST be Wifi because I can't see myself (or many other people) hooking up LAN cables to all my cabs.
I am still dreaming of a 2 (or more) player game through the internet, but that would mean serious software modding at least, because how to "send over" the on-screen info ? The controls wouldn't be that hard....

oh he would be able to for sure. ;)
he seems to be fine with me posting as long as i have an active account. :)
i guess wifi would make it a bit more expenisve and i am not sure if there are any regulations regarding the antenna that we would have to meet. i guess not if we get one that is licenced. i have to check it out.

should be possible to save those two games locally and globally.

Great, some dutch hacker genius had the same idea, maybe you can ask him if you can use it and give him the credits he deserves, design and source are freely available :)

had not seen this till now... but we would definately want to do it on our own without using code from others. jochen is quite talented when it comes down to such things since he was producing games and music on atari st and amiga when he was at Thalion in the late 80s.
the possibility that somebody thought about this are quite high i guess since i love the idea a lot.
our goal is to come up with something out of the box for most of the people... including the high score table-page to compete against each other and to save and store all the scores. i kind of like the wireless idea as well.
i guess i will set up my arcade with this first for beta testing. if it turns out to be functional and cool we will see if there is a market.
-
It is open source. All men have made is build upon or inspired by nature or the work off others so check it out ;D Keep us posted on the architecture you guys come up with both radical new or in the line of this one.
Have fun

Love this idea, now everybody will be able to see what a bad player i am.. ;D
Seriously, i hope you can make this work, would be really cool!

Jochen just called me. He is really into this at the moment. Hope he keeps this spirit. Yeah... I think we can come up with something really cool here.
I might go an get the URL that I want for this soon. ;)

Jochen looked into this. He wants more. He wants to include High Score Save even to games who do not support this feature (if there is enough space). Wireless should not be a problem.
We are looking into the support for all 8 Bit processors.
-
Hmmm, bottum up with only the fact that it is a 8 bit architecture will be a challenge, maybe you should go for screen scraping ???
Keep us posted.

Sounds great, but, i have 38+ games, then I would have to buy 38+ kits right??? Seems quite expencive then.....

THe original will probably cost 50 bucks a piece. Then we wait 6 months and we buy the Chinese bootleg for 10 bucks each ;) ;) ;)
-
Great idea!!
(even if I don't understand how it could be 'linked' to different PCB).
I really like the idea to connect a old Arcade game to Internet :)
-
Pcb's are not costing that much so you can't expect that there is a huge market for highscore addon kits when they are over 50 Euro's. To spare cost you could ofcourse offer a kit. In the end it is just a nice to have.
-
Maybe I am missing something here, but the main feature seems to be that the kit sends the HS to a website where it will be stored in a table where you and others with Internet access can view it.
But why not just develop a website with database where users with access can just input their scores in a table manually, much easier, much cheaper and better to maintain. Of course these kinds of websites alreaqdy exist, more or less. like TwinGalaxies (used to be).
a High Score Save Kit, without internet access would be enough then, and keep costs lower.

we want to bring the feature to boards that do not have a kit so far. jochen is working on something at the moment... here is a little spoiler. who knows this game? :)

why not making a website? because it would not be new. :) i like the idea of uploading my score to a virtual board but this is why I was asking the community if you guys think this would be a cool feature. Maybe it is possilbe to upgrade the save kits with lan-capability. I have to talk with jochen about that. It would definately be possible to make 2 different kts. one with the ability to upload... and a second basic save kit. :)
-
GORF ??? Nah, Wikipedia says that Gorf was released in 1981.
A basic save kit would be cool, especially if the costs are much lower and when you have a lot of games without standard High Score save. ;D

gorf is close... but not the right answer. :)
well... doing a basic safe kit for those machines that won´t have one so far... definately possible. :)
i think we will offer optional internet for those who like the idea as much as we do over here. :)
actually i can not wait to put such a kit on my Galaga 88. this is going to be a bit tricky cause you can not just go and take the processor from the board without a few skills... but it will be worth the work for sure.
-
It's Wizard of Wor ;)
To be honest, I don't see Dirk and me installing those kits on all our machines + 2 16port switches ::)
But for single cabs, why not.

talked to jo a few minutes ago. we can make the upload optional just by hooking up another little board.

I love this idea SOOOO much and had a similar idea in my head for a long time. I always dreamed of their being a kind of XBOX LIVE leader board for arcade games. The closest I have seen was the Revenge From Mars online leader boards.

I am also not sure if i would install it in EVERY machine. But the ones I like and play a lot... why not? It is cool to compare scores with other guys.
We could do something online like Funspot does. Picutures of you with the time and date of the record. Dipswitch-settings would be a point, too.
Endless ideas. :)

Will this only work with certain CPUs? Like all Z80 games or something? Daughter card with wi-fi that plugs into the Z-80!? How you doing this?!?!? :) How does it connect to the internet. Am I gonna have to run Ethernet to all my games?!?!?
-

i will let my buddy jochen answer all the technical stuff in a few days. yeah.. z80 games will work fine. daughter card would be a goid way to let peolpe decide if they add the feature or not. you could connect your cabs to a switch that goes into your router.
jochen is putting a high score save into a wizard of wor at the moment as some kind of a prototype and to get the feeling of how it is done for games that do not even have a table so far. something i would not even be able to think of... but he is quite a clever dude. ever since he was working on the atari st back at Thalion and even before. Some of the people familiar with the ST demo scene know the name Mad Max for sure. ;)
-
Here is a quick update on Wizard of Wor and Gorf, two games that had no high score save kit so far because it was a "little complicated" to include. ;)
Jochen is working on free play as well.
The High Score Table for WoW:

Entering your initials (both players can do this at the same time):

And Gorf:

Remember that we want all the imput we can get... especially when it comes down to games that you would love to have a save kit for! :)
Greetings... and see you this weekend!

not that spectacular at the moment. i will post them tomorrow. they are at my store. :)
-
that is OUTSTANDING work you're doing there, guys! i have no idea how this works, but i'm thrilled to see it happening! :spaceace:
-
Here a small update - i couldn't work that much on that project due a lot of work at home... :-/
A normal z80 savekit uses a eprom for the program code and only the z80 will have access... on gorf/wow and every pcb with additional hardware this won't work.
The reason is the additional hardware (e.g. The pattern Board) copies data from the Game-ROM to Screen-Ram. (On WoW or Gorf e.g. the Characters)
This new prototype works with that... (see the pix - don't mind the german language-pack, this is just for memory-map-testing.
BTW: German on Gorf sounds funny, but is unbareable)
yesterday i finished the "Enter Initials"-Program for Gorf (finished WOW already a few Months ago). This was quite heavy and i know now, why there is no savekit for wow or gorf available yet... :-)
Now this week i put the EEprom-Save-Routines and on Weekend Tyrem and I will test it on a Originial Cabinet.
We will send more pix after testing - if everything works fine - the "online-module" will follow ;)
Greetings
Jochen

can´t wait! thrilled to see the results in a dedicated machine! this will rock so much!

Awesome. Yes the "German" on WoW is unbearable too. I could not understand a single word when I heard it at Ully's :)
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMUjArIFTn8&feature=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMUjArIFTn8&feature=youtu.be)
finally it is running in a dedicated cab. :)
We will start with the production of the final versions in early 2014. Gorf is also ready to roll. :)
-
Awesome !
-
Here some Software-Updates about the Gorf-Kit
it features:
The Hardware-Dips are exchanged to Software Dips - you can adjust them all in a DIP-Menu
(See attached Pix)
(btw: we will have this "software-dip" as standard...so in all our savekits there is no need to change dips on the pcb)
2 separate highscore-tables (if you play with 2/4 ships or 3/6 ships)
you can choose if all the highscores (5) are saved, only the first, or only the first 3....
you can change language (english / german)
FULL freeplay in attract mode !
you can choose if you want to have the freeplay with 2/3 or 4/6 ships (depends on the dip-setting)
the software seems to be nearly done... (tested on the real hardware as well)
there is a need for some more testings.....
anyway.... no i need to design the pcb in eagle....
thats all for now :)
Greetings
Jochen

GREAT WORK! I really want to see that high score upload to the internet. If you can do that for most games and have some sort of leaderboard it would change classic gaming!

Yes. Jochen told me that we will make our prototype save kit in a few days. We will use Popeye for it. It will be as close to the final version as possible.
The prototype has to be tested under real conditions in my cab. We also have the URL for the highscore-website and the basic layout to display the scores (for your gameroom or for global comparisons.
I think this is going to be really cool. Highscore upload is just an option. People can take it... or they can stick to the save-only-version. Still this version will have the advantage of saving without battery and the on screen dipswitch-settings. :)
I will ask Jochen to go into details here. He is much more into the technical stuff than I am.
-
Superb! Thank you Tyrem! 8)

Jochen did some work last night and finished the prototype of our highscore savekit for the old Midway-machines Space Zap, WoW and Gorf.

Can the highscores be uploaded to a website? How does this work? Can we choose a website we want providing there is code to support it?

this version has the internet-board connected to it. it uploads the highscores to our website.
on that site you will be able to make tournaments, compare your scores in your gameroom or compare with every score in the world. it will be up to you. :)
we are planing to do a gameroom-leaderboard-thing as well.

Impressive !

yeah. a normal savekit would be around 39 euros inkluding on screen dips.
the highscore upload feature would make it a little hit more expensive but it will be totally optional.
-
I have a DK save kit, it is totally awesome to be able to save your scores. It also comes with free play option btw
This takes it next level, upload the highscore
-
Sounds like a great idea if you can pull it off
I don't know how it would work but but sounds good
Trouble is I don't have a wi if spot anywhere near my arcades
-
You can get wifi range extenders.
Not sure if I already mentioned this....but this would be one step closer to playing two player games on-line......that would be KILLLER IMHO....

that´s a good question... i have a dk with a d2k-kit installed. i guess the only way this works is to take out the kit and replace it with ours... with the d2k-code on it.
this of course could mean trouble with the creator of the d2k. maybe we should try to do it and then step up to him. after all this could be cool for all of us.

jochen is going to look into it but he thinks it will be possible. do you know the guy who did the d2k?
cause we wanna have him on board with us. after all this is his baby.

thx Etienne. I was hoping that John knows him personally. I think this might help. As mentioned before it would be possible... but it is completely up to Jeff. We would not mind if he would sell the new kits on his own. After all we are in this for the spirit. :)

I don't know him personally. I had him on my podcast a long time ago. HE was a nice guy and easy to get a hold of through his website.

now that the hardware is nearly finished,
it is time to work on the "front-end"....
i must admit that it really looks very very cool on a big screen.
it seems that this hardware is perfect for a scoreboard as well :-)
Edit:

Would it be possible to use this application even with no save kit, I mean just to keep track of the high scores 'locally', any a game room? ::) :)

of course it would be possible to enter scores by hand. you can talk with jochen about that this weekend. ;)
-
it is just a database...if the data is filled "manually" or automatically by the hardware it does not matter - so - it can be used in every game room if somebody provides the data for the database. (but it is much cooler if you just play and watch, or even let play and just watch!)
right now it is just a dynamic website.
The front end on the pic is a "quick and dirty" version to show 2 games (at the same time).... the possibilities are nearly endless.
-
Looks really good!!!

Can you make an high score kit for every game there is?

Awesome!!

i guess pretty much is possible but the new stuff is a pain in the ass. far too complicated, too much work.

jupp. we will focus on the older machines first. i do want a savekit for my g88 and the r-type though. :)

Here is a short video of the savekit in action in the real dedicated WoW.

VVS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt9zSfinwFA) alert !! ;D :D
LOL ! Seriously.....I can't stand it.
By the way....how do my initials come into that machine (AJH) ? Was it once owned by Superully ? :D
Haha...no although those _are_ my initials, I always use DRE :)
-
lol guys... it is 30 sec. long. you crybabies. ;) ;) ;)
this was shot with my phone 3 minutes before we drove to bruno. it is not a product video. i thought you would be interested to see the save kit in action in a real machine. :)
and yes, this machine came from superully. ajh is andreas jochen hippel, kim is me of course.
you can use the same initials for different owners because in the backend of the website that displays them worldwide you can set a key for your safekit so it knows that ajh in the arcade in trier is a different ajh as the one in holland.
it is important so everybody knows his right score on the worldwide scoreboard.
-
Ah....did Superully ever fix that monitor properly ? I remember I got it running but it was no the "nicest" job I did but "somewhat creative"....can't remember what it was though....I do remember the temperature of Superully's house......it was somewhere between a sauna and a freaking oven !!!
By the way, how's your cat Ully...he/she was blind IIRC ? Oops sorry for thread de-rail...

screen is doing fine except a small curve in the left bottom of the screen which can hardly be seen cause it is in an area where´s not much going on. :)
game runs great and you can not imagine how much this highscore save and upload-feature to the internet increases the replay-value.
we have very low scores at the moment and jochen and i are comparing scores via internet for the last 2 days.. which is amazing. it really is and i hope that the community will love it as much as i do. after all this is a pretty modern step and i am sure not everybody will like the idea.
last time both cats did fine. the blind cat knew what it was doing. :)
-
vertical videos - no matter how long they are - are driving me NUTS / MAD / INSANE!!! seriously, everytime i have to watch one, i'm going ballistic ...

as i can see right now - you haven't beaten my score yet, hehehe :P
we'll try to show everything about this project next weekend at the eurocade - and even those, who are not coming, can see the score tables of gorf and wizard of wor, played by the visitors there

www.arcadehighscores.com
thats the prototype website for the eurocade... watch it in fullscreen - this site updates every 30-60 seconds via ajax
here a picture of a working gorf cage...
i am still not yet satisfied how i connected the board.... the savekit pcb has to be connected with a ribbon cable because of that damn card cage...
maybe somebody has an idea?
-
i have to beta-test this WoW even more. I hardly played that game till two days ago. As I said before... the highscore save adds a huuuge replay-value for me.
for the save kit in the case... we have to find something that everybody can install withought major problems.
-
The website absolutely rocks! wow!! Im definitely in for some of those boards now! :spaceace: :spaceace:
Maybe a lame question, but is these two boards are the stuff you build?:

yes, sir! :)
this is the product. we will bring to cabs to the eurocade.
hey guys... tell uns your initials and we will set up a eurocade arcade.
the savekits know who is behind the initials then and it will display your real names if you like.
so if you wanna try it out... give us the real names and your 3 letters for the highscore-board. :)

they are cable at the moment. just plug them into a router. we are not sure about wifi and all the problems and regulations that come along with it. would make it more expensive, too. you will see how it works at Eurocade. ;)

Ok, im sure there will be a video as im not attending EuroCade..

yepp. but this makes it muuch more expensive. still something we are looking into since it is elegant.
we will set up some machines in my basement and see how this turns out when it comes down to costs and flexibilty. jochen can tell you more about it.
-
Well, I just found out that an Apple Airport express can actually do this and.......I have one laying around doing nothing since I got AppleTV and AirPort Extreme so..........;)

This is awesome! I am definitely interested in a Gorf high score save kit. Are these close to being available?

yes. we would like to test it a few more days and it will take a few more weeks till they go in "mass" production. i will tell you when they are ready to roll here in this board.

Actually, Pole Position is a GREAT idea. That game only requires a single DS1220 to save scores. No rom modding at all.
Zoo Keeper would also be amayzing!!

;D ha that's easy! Jochen can produce the kits ad john will throw them in his endless bucket of brown paint!

You'd probably be top of the list!
You posted some cracking scores on Twitter earlier today John. I can get around 58K. Way behind... This would be a cool game for an on-line scoreboard.

My friend Matt is way better than me. My high score is around 63,600. Matt broke 65k twice last night on my game. We are both getting good but he is better. :)

Any progress with these? Aching to have this feature on my Gorf!

Any progress with these? Aching to have this feature on my Gorf!
actually a lot of progress. but no final product yet. we finished the Donkey Kong first. That one is bugfree and ready to roll.
So far we made kits for DK, Frogger, Gorf, Wizard of Wor, Gyruss, Scramble and Time Pilot. I will tell Jochen to finish Gorf next cause there is a lot of need for that one. ;)
-
Apologies been away a while - where is the best place to find out the latest about this (is there a mailing list?).. need one for a Wizard of Wor cabinet? :)

i will save your contact and get back to you when it is ready to roll.

Hey guys.....
So, Jochen was kind enough to leave an Asteroids kit for me to try on my machine. After some first tiny issues (a missing E(E)PROM was something that did make the kit not working, LOL but that was quickly fixed) it works fine now. However, it regretfully did not solve the reset problems of this board but I also didn't really expect it to..... But, scores are saved !
I just hooked up a (temporary) long CAT.5 cable. But what now ?
I see it is doing a DHCP request on the set-up screen but how do I know if it was successful ?
Also: there is no entry for Asteroids yet on http://www.arcadehighscores.com :'( :'( :'( ;D
-
Edit:
I just looked at the DHCP server of my cable router and it shows this:
Eth-Switch Lan(2) 00:17:31:bb:0e:e0 192.168.1.21 AJH_ASTEROIDS
So that looks perfect :D
I also noticed that after power up, the screen flashes DHCP REQUEST followed by DHCP OK :)
Now the serious step: let's put that unused Apple airport express to some good use and make this a WiFi Asteroids ! :)
Pretty cool if it works, I can then move my printer to the inside of the Asteroids and print my shit there.....finally gets that bulky thing out of the way ;)
-
Haha, the on-board 230V outlet for the marquee comes in pretty handy for testing now :)
Plugged the Airport Express in there and the (now way too long) cat 5 cable into it.
Getting a DHCP Error 4, but I need to configure the Airport first....
-
Hi Andre,
your asteroids already uploaded two scores ;-)
but no "user" is set yet...
so i just sent you a message for the public and secret key..
.
-
AH OK, thanks :)
So at least it worked OK with the cable, great !
I'm wondering if I can actually do with the Airport Extreme what I think I could do....need to puzzle a bit more with the settings...
-
Ok let's forget about the Airport Express .......found this on eBay and it looks cheap and exactly what we need :)
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=371410782584&globalID=EBAY-DE
Bridges any Ethernet port to Wifi, can work on 5-15V and only consumes 1.5W.
Will need to make a wire for the power but that is easy enough. The USB connector is only for the power and it can be removed so you have a "regular" power connector.....but can cut the wires too of course :)
-
Ordered....
-
Jochen,
Due to my work in progres on the Centi I was not able to really test the hs setup. Keep you posted.
-
no prob, leo.
i hope you can fix your centi!!! it's a great game!
-
Jochen,
Turns out the same company produces a "DIY" kit for wifi:
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=351425215953&globalID=EBAY-NL
Wouldn't there be a way to use this directly instead of going from the save kit-> Ethernet module -> wifi module ?
I don't know how the save kit communicates with the Ethernet module but if it is similar (the same ?) as this wifi kit this would be a way to offer wifi connection directly.
Just an idea of course :)
-
Found more and even cheaper serial TTL to Wifi modules, you can find them for around 11 Euro on EBay but this site has a nice overview of a lot of them:
http://www.usriot.com/Product/cat-54.html
I guess these are about the same price as the TTL to Ethernet module (some even offer both Ethernet and Wifi).
But I have no clue how both devices compare in connecting, configuring etc. I see the Wifi one uses AT commands:
http://www.usriot.com/Down/WIFI/USR-WIFI232-D2-V1.0.10_en.pdf
-
we already thought about a wifi-solution, but we didn't do it like that because of several reasons:
* the ethernet-module what we're using right is now costs about 5€
* it is plug&play if you use a router with DHCP
the problems with a WIFI-Module:
* how can somebody setup the wifi?
-> no connection to a pc possible (if there is no rj45 jack anymore)
[edit] It is possible to be configured. but it seems not to be that easy) [/edit]
-> every cab(module) has to be set up for wifi
-> much more expensive
-> not that easy to configure, the dashboard for the wifi-configuration must be in the software of game (if there is no rj45 jack)
that's why our solution for a wifi method was:
* getting a wifi-router that connects to the existing WIFI (e.g. with a router like i brought to eurocade - the price was about 15 Euros)
->plug the cab(s) into that router (most of the time the router has a small switch inside).
the advantages of that method:
-> configure the wifi only once with a pc (and a dashboard at all)
-> you can connect es many cabs as you want (just add a switch)
even if you buy such a router for every cab, it is still easier to configure, easier to use and if it burns, easier to replace ;-)
it worked really well in Ridderkerk (i didn't expect it to be that easy btw)
-
even if you buy such a router for every cab, it is still easier to configure, easier to use and if it burns, easier to replace ;-)
THIS! it had to be easy... and I guess it would also cost as much as a build in solution.
-
OK guys, just was suggesting something that feels to me make the kit a lot more interesting.
It's 2015....who wants spiders of cat.5 cables around his gameroom ? Lots of hassle when moving cabs etc. etc.
Talk about easy :)
How hard is it to connect to a Wifi network ? It takes selecting one that was scanned by your phone or tablet or computer and then entering a password.
As far as I understand those modules can do this.
It IS easy, like entering hi score initials, just a bit longer and only needs to be done once.
Ethernet is 1995 :)

you need to configure this from the cab. and that´s not an easy thing to do. not only for the customer... you also have to code a propper interface for the actual arcade machine. not an easy task when you have limited resources. trust me... it is good to keep it simple and affordable. if you add 5 euros to the production costs the retail price will also rise. you do get a router for 10 to 15 euros and you could put it in the cab if you like.

Our savekit webshop is online now. :)
http://shop.arcadehighscores.com/ (http://shop.arcadehighscores.com/)
Feel free to drop Jochen and me a line if you want other games featured.
We are working on the Williams-stuff (Joust, Defender, Moon Patrol etc.) and on games like Star Wars, Galaga 88 and Dragon Spirit for example.
Credits to Jochen for the amazing work!
-
Yeah absolutely amazing what he did.....don't get me wrong from my Wifi stubbornness, these kits are totally brilliant :)
-
Oh one tip guys....make a very clear button or whatever hyperlink to the highscore website from the shop's site (and vice versa) :)
I just received the ethernet to Wifi bridge from the far east and amazingly it worked right away !
It is insanely simple to set up:
- Plug it in on any USB charger (no need to connect the Ethernet yet)
- get out your iPhone, iPad or whatever device that can connect to Wifi and use a browser (I used my iPad)
- connected to the bridge's Wifi network
- browsed to it’s configuration “website” page
- logged in
- selected my home’s Wifi name from the list of Wifi networks it found and turned off the repeater mode (it can also act as a Wifi Repeater but I don’t need/want that in this situation)
- save the settings
- removed the USB power
- plugged it into the ethernet connection of the Asteroids kit, and applied power using USB charger (temporary, I will connect it to the game’s 5V later)
- started up game……it finds DHCP OK and worked !
Wouldn’t have thought it was this easy ! LOL :)
So I guess I have a World-Premiere now by having the world's first Wifi equipped Asteroids :D
-
>:( I wanna test it too.... But centi is still not happy....
-
Woohoo, the first Wifi uploaded high scores are there:

Woohoo, the first Wifi uploaded high scores are there:

is this cool or is this cool? ;) good work, mate!
-
It is !!!
.....but there are some issues.....like there are better hi scores on my kit's table, but they don't get synced to the webpage.
It looks like the scores are only uploaded to the webpage just after you entered your initials....
That is a bit of a problem since it is very possible that you can be off-line sometimes when you score your best....like the provider dropped it's service for a while, or your cable/ADSL modem crashed or....like in my case, you simply removed the Ethernet cable for a while....
There should be some syncing after reconnecting IMHO, but I already e-mailed Jochen about this.
In fact, I'm Jochen's worst nightmare at the moment, bombarding him with ideas for improvements.....of course I do not limit myself with any technological knowledge about the kit, so I just dream away with things I think would be useful or.......just fun :D
Oh and.....there should be no financial reason for not changing the Ethernet module for a Wifi one....in fact.....it would be cheaper, a lot cheaper:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ESP8266-Serial-WIFI-Wireless-Transceiver-Module-DIY-Send-Receive-LWIP-AP-STA-A-/301761350680?hash=item464260cc18
2 bucks, including shipping......da fuck !
-
You can't just put a wifi module on it to work. You'll need code to access the wifi network.
The Ethernet solution is plug and play
-

The Ethernet solution is plug and play
Yes I know.
With a few AT commands (which I assume the kit can perform, it "talks" to the Ethernet module now too !) you can fetch a list of available Wifi networks and this info could be displayed on the screen. You simply select your Wifi network from the list. Then the biggest challenge is that you will have to enter your Wifi's password but that is not a lot different from setting the Public and Private keys as it is now on the menu (so actually, it's not Plug & Play now either ! :D).
The only difference is that a larger range of characters is needed (full alfabet lower and upper case f.i.).
But I'm probably beating a dead horse :D And for those who want wifi, the 16 euro solution I went with is easy-peasy and works flawlessly....
-
Hey guys!
John from Johns Arcade featured our DK-savekit this morning.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=773KS526baw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=773KS526baw)
Jochen and I are happy to tell you that we have permission to officially include D2K in a pro-Version of the kit very soon!
-
Hmm, I saw that on one of his videos some time ago ( when he mentioned Tyrem and say thx for that kit ).
Edit:
just watched his episode, congrats guys for your awesome highscore kit!
-
Great, congrats guys, very cool project.. Does this also work on the first dk version with the 4 boards?
-
Cool!!!!
He already mentioned it in an earlier show too, but this is way better: a full episode about THE DK kit!
-
Great, congrats guys, very cool project.. Does this also work on the first dk version with the 4 boards?
Yes it works w/ all original boards (and all _known_ bootlegs as well btw)
-
