Title: Super Don Quix-ote Marquee
Post by: italiandoh on February 26, 2011, 04:20:10 PM
Well, since Dex did not get back in touch, i (as a master in AI  :D )have decided to pick this up.

I would like to repro a marquee for Super Don Quix-ote (Interstallar conversion).

I have a large scanned image, any chance you pick this up too in the future ?
Thanks,

Matteo

You are getting really handy with this DTP stuff! Maybe you could take a look at my donkey kong instruction sticker? The replica i printed out is a little bit different from the original one.

Its a bit like a touchpad.
the square you see represents your desktop area, the pen is the mouse.

the button on the pen is the secondary mouse button, and the tip of the pen is the primary mouse button.

so when you move the pencil 1 mm above the plate , the mouse moves "without holding the button" and when you "write" or "draw" while touching the pad, it acts like you move your mouse while you press the button.

which will translate in drawing programs to a line  ;)

You can do that ofcourse with a mouse, but this gives you more the "natural writing/drawing" experience which is very noticable in the end results  8)

Okay,

I asked my wife to "create" the missing lines since she likes to draw, and she does a much better job at that than me  ;D

It is like the original, but i think it can use some touch-ups if you want to improve the original.
Maybe other guys like to do that  ;)

What technique did you use for half-tone colouring the donkey and the man's boots?
Title: Re: Super Don Quix-ote Marquee
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on March 22, 2011, 11:11:57 AM
hehe, "The pain in the ass technique"  ;D

created a grid then took a circle, copied it, placed it, selected the two, copy them, place them, selected the four, copy them, place them, selected the eight, copy them, place them, etc. etc. etc.

after a while , the multiply-ing goes faster and faster..
after that take out the parts not needed..  almost the same like the zaccaria i made:

Since this has a "white" surrounding, i was forced to cut some dots.
here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2351.msg30038#msg30038) is the Zacc complete

for gradient, i use this (http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/VectorHalftoneinIllustrator.pdf) method that i found somewhere online.

haha, it is a total pain in the ass!

Looks like you had just as much a pain as when I did it. I did manage to find a quicker technique where you put one row of dots (at the end of the bit you want to colour), then another row of dots and the other end and you can get AI to fill in the dots inbetween, massively faster! The simply shove a mask over the top of it.

I was doing the Rolling Thunder control panel and a massive bit of it is half-tone coloured blue. My AI kept crashing, I assume because of the sheer number of dots. I gave up on it in the end. I still also need a scan of the Atari Ireland bit on the front, to completely finish it, but can't get hold of one :(

Also, when half-tone colouring using that technique, the colours completely screw up when you enlarge or shrink the print size. They are only good for the exact size you are after.

which version do you use ? , i have never crashed AI since i am using it..

also i may depend on the machine youre using..

Im using my laptop with a Intel i3 M350 @ 2,3 Ghz with 3GB memory atm.. (windows 7 + CS5)
Title: Re: Super Don Quix-ote Marquee
Post by: Dazza on March 23, 2011, 11:23:01 PM
This was a couple of years ago now. I was using AI CS3, on Windows XP and it only had 2GB memory back then.

I think I was running out of memory. The control panel vector was approximately 2.5 times larger in physical size than the marquee I was working on. Never crashed when I was doing my marquee. Only started crashing when I did the massive half-tone addition to the control panel.

I might try again now I have 6GB of memory and a massively more powerful machine. Still need to get the bottom half of the control panel scanned from someone though.

Wow, thanks a lot Etienne ! Good work indeed !
I have a question: is it me or the I, E and L letters in UNIVERSAL are slightly different, like bold ?
Thanks again,

Matteo

I need to say that i "stole" the word from Zorg's vectorbase (http://vectorlib.free.fr/SuperDonQuix/).
he had a file with sideart there which i took it from..
(also the other words by the way  :D )

here a shot of the original with the vector that i inserted:

It is indeed a bit "wider", i can adjust that if you like..

I measured it in Illustrator, and it is 0,6 mm wider than the original
also the original is more "handdrawn" than this, this is very tight  ::)

you can read more about that here :

https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2181.msg30164#msg30164 (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2181.msg30164#msg30164)

I didn't mean that. When I open the PDF with Adobe, I see some letters (I, E and L) which look different with respect to the others.
Take a look:

Hmm strange..

could be the PDF viewing, normally it will print fine.

Anyway, i will check the files here..
Title: Re: Super Don Quix-ote Marquee
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on March 26, 2011, 08:13:19 PM
Just opened the file in Acrobat reader, and your right, it looks strange, so i did some testing:

300% looks strange, like some letters are a bit faded and the others are sharp.  ???

400% looks almost fine, just a slight view of the issue appears, when i zoom deeper, it dissapears..

then i went to Illustrator...

300% looks fine

400% looks fine too, and so do all other zoomfactors there, so i guess its the way acrobat reader shows it to you.

To be absolutely sure, i zoomed in and checked the thickness and the border color..
as you can see all the lines are a fraction thicker than the anchorpoints so they are really the same..

all are 87,33% black..

I think the file is ok, its just the way acrobat handles the image..

there is however another possible explanation, but thats something the AI experts here maybe can confirm, i have moved some of the letters to position them on top of the original, and maybe these are the letters that i have moved, or the opposite, did not touch..

i would say that does not matter since they are all paths, and also i dont know exactly if these are the ones that i have shifted..
just a thought..

I just tried using Nitro PDF reader (free) and it shows the image perfectly, so it's definitely something related to Acrobat. I'm using 9.0, upgrading to 9.2 now to see if it helps.
Thanks for checking it out.
