@Stefan: yes plus much more.

@Etienne: maybe yes, the SIO port does provide a 5V out (unlikely serial ports of computing products like f.i. Commodore) and a few devices actually ran from that power, one was a cassette recorder (XC12) so it seems to be capable of providing at least some power, at least enough to power the motor of the tape drive, which is relatively power hungry. So....following that it might well be possible indeed but I'm not sure if the device actually does put out the 5V.

It's not really a brand new idea or something. I've had SIO2PC built into my 130XE since maybe almost 10 years or so. It's just a single chip (1489 or 75189) that costs less than 1 euro. However, that requries soldering inside the computer of course, although it's quite simple. And you need to build a RS-232 connector in the case which not everybody wants.
Further most people don't have RS232 connections on their PCs anymore. I do (laptop from work) and I have a RS232 to USB adapter, but if you dont have RS232 this is a great alternative.

You can use the Aspeqt software as a server for the Atari: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/154949-aspeqt-yet-another-sio2pcape-clone/

What is nice about Lothareks SIO2USB is the extermely compact format (just the connector).

Funny thing is that Atari's SIO port is more or less the predessesor of the USB standard. The SIO port at least was an inspiration for the USB standard and both have been (co)developped by Joe Decuire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_SIO)

A SIO2BT (Bluetooth) has also already been developped, ( http://atariage.com/forums/topic/228860-sio2bt/ ) if thats'your kind of thing but it has some drawbacks still (speed f.i.) and I dont really want to do file transfer from an Andriod device.
