It's happen, another time ::).... unfortunately :? I've found the pieces for another great game and cab (on my wish list):
(http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/7503/vfju.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/248/vfju.jpg/)
I can't resist, so another scratch built replica is around the corner...
I'm not sure.... anyone here in europe owns this cab? I don't know, I try to ask your help here and on klov.
Let's start with some measures:

thanks to anyone who can help me!!! :spaceace:
two packages are already flying over the ocean ... fingers crossed ... as always ::)
-
I cannot help, but for sure will follow your project... as always!
-
Cannot help this time, but I'm really happy to follow a new 'Scratch Built Replica' story by Scr33n :)
-
So you're interested in building the us-version or the european? I've got the european version and I've already painted a CPO for it.
Let me know and I will try to get the measures you want asap :)

Thanks Luigi but it's the US version :-\
-
No problem....good luck with your project!! :)
-
Great! I'll watch with interest. This guy didn't have much luck getting measurements, but his email's there maybe he got them eventually?

Now that guy is really annoying....instead of grabbing the reached hands (people offered to measure their cab) he keeps whining for a complete set of plan......tz..... ::)
-
I obtained these measures from a Klov member (LongJohns):
In mm
1 = 1782
2 = 1630
3 = 218
4 = 724
5 = 724
6 = 94
7 = 28 *see note 1
8 = 25 *see note 2
9 = 236
10 = 164
11 = 884
12 = 10
13 = 15
14 = 45
15 = 7
16 = can't measure as cabinet stripped
17 = 200
*note 1 - subtract marquee thickness. Also this measurement is in the center - the marquee is mounted at an angle. 40 mm down from the top it is 31 mm to the front edge (less plexi thickness), and @ 185 mm down from the top it is 25 mm from the front edge (less plexi)
*note 2 - also less thickness of the bezel and also measured in the center as it follows the same angle as the marquee. Hard to measure without multiple measurements as the cabinet curves here.
:spaceace: :spaceace:

Other measures (thanks to LongJohns on Klov :spaceace:):

in mm
18 = 38
19 = 70
20 = 150
21 = 50
22 = 34
23 = 70
24 = 70
25 = 150
26 = 50
27 = 70
28 = 660
29 = 625
30 = 680 from the front flat plane
31 = 1450 to the center of the curve
32 = 520 from the center of the curve @ bottom to the front face flat plane (where the curve starts)
33 = 208 from the flat planes on each end
34 = 602 (fairly sure on this, but hard to be 100% as I still have that part of the cabinet masked off for painting)
35 = 598
width of the upper door is 620
Planning can start ...

First package from Quarterarcade is here:
(http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/7575/2m55.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/189/2m55.jpg/)
inside:
(http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/2167/qfaa.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/541/qfaa.jpg/)
- williams 2 slot coin door
- williams lower coin door
- new repro marquee
- original robotron speaker panel + speaker (great conditions!!!)
- coin door bolts
:)
-
I've got two wheels and two legs incl. mounting plates. I bought them new from Arcadeshop.de but since the derusting was so successful I decided to use the original stuff instead. Let me know if you're interested for a good price......I could bring them to EC :)
Why two legs only: it's hard to move a cab when it's sitting on 4 feet. I'd rather put it on two feet in the front and the two wheels in the back. So you can simply lieft the front and pull it towards you ;)
-
Another package from US (arcadeboneyard):
(http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/2941/g8fs.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/94/g8fs.jpg/)
inside:
(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/4417/0bps.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/5/0bps.jpg/)
::)
-
Two other packages from US ...
first one from a Klov member (robotron911 - thanks Mark!!!):
inside:
(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/6392/vyox.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/202/vyox.jpg/)
- nice original and clean Robotron control panel
- CP hinge
- rear lower door hinge
- 2 nos wico 4" joysticks :-* :-*
- 4 translucent blue long buttons (not work with this control panel ???)
and from Arcadeshop.com:
(http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/6951/lpj2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/13/lpj2.jpg/)
inside:
(http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/8284/80h9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/17/80h9.jpg/)
- Robotron CPO repro
- CP hinges repro
- CP molding trim
- 2 translucent blue short buttons (works with this control panel :spaceace:)
another package from Gamestencils.com (for the stencils 8)) and I'm ready to go .... :pac:

Love your projects and the fact you stay true to the original.. good luck!
-
Hi,
I just discovered your project and already love it ! :-*
I could have helped you since I own the US version of this cab ! But unfortunately, it is not stored where I live and can't have acces to it. In a few months (let's say mid 2014...) things could be different.
At least, I have a set of pictures I took during the roadtrip (http://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=24189.msg366423#msg366423) I made to get it ! If you want the high res pictures (and possibly other pictures), do not hesitate to ask me :).
Good luck in your project ! ^-^
-
Wow, you're making big steps in the right direction :)
May I ask how much you paid for the WICOs?
-
Thanks guys for the support - as always :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Thanks Little_Rabbit for the help (I really appreciate) :-* :spaceace:... you can send the pics at the email in my profile. Thanks!!!

Too much :-[ but I had no alternative (around 40€ each) but I'm happy ... Wico joystick kick ass 8)

Someone on KLOV mentioned he had recently sold a pair for ~$200...so 80€ the pair is not bad :)

I can't wait to start the real work ...
-
Well it looks like you are on your way - hopefully all my measurements are fairly accurate. ;)
I *might* be able to get the missing measurement for you in the next week or so - depends how it goes with the painting (hey, I work slow).
-
Wait...do you already have the PCBs or this an emulation?

Posted over on KLOV, but the missing back door measurements:

34 = 602 (fairly sure on this, but hard to be 100% as I still have that part of the cabinet masked off for painting)
35 = 598
width of the upper door is 620

Scr33n: can you keep a log of cost? It will be interesting for people to see cost to make one before they commit time and effort. I'm sure it's more then buying ready made but how much more.

Sorry but absolutely no cost log on these things :roll: but believe me for us (European) less than an original cab, and in this case even more (Robotron is also expensive in the US).
-
No problem with the emulation. It's still not perfect in Mame but it's a good deal. Are you planning to use the original hardware if you can get it?
About the costs....I guess that importing all this stuff from USA isn't cheap either ;)

Today arrived the last package - from gamestencils.com
(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5455/mtjs.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/mtjs.jpg/)

Looking great!!
One question...
Since I've seen so many scratch builds.. meaning you have had to start from "scratch" How come yall are using this "mdf" stuff? isn't that basically the same as particle board: wood chips & glue?
Why not plywood? Your game would be rock solid! Particle board is flimsy, breaks easy, as seen in endless repairs in every restoration thread, and if water gets on it, Game Over.
Sorry to get a little off topic... :oops:
-
You're right Barry but,
- plywood is much much more expensive, at least here in Italy
- MDF is simple to use and soft to be cut
-
dont forget the supersmooth surface of MDF
-
dont forget the supersmooth surface of MDF
You're right... You can get "A/B" Plywood, one side super smooth, other side regular.. but: 65.00 per sheet of 4'X6' If smooth on both sides.. much more...!
-
MDF is far supieror to plywood. It's perfectly brilliant for what screen does. Plywood IMO is easier to break than MDF. Plywood bends when it gets wet. It's awful.
Sorry to derail your thread screen.
-
here in europe the price of MDF is much cheaper than plywood.
here a little comparison from the local DIY store...
and we are talking Euro's here... €€€€€
-
I have made some bad experience with MDF....what types of screws can be used? I used regular wood screws and they were loose when I screwed them in.
-
the best screws for MDF are SPAX-M.
You don't have to pre drill then.
if you use normal screws, always predrill and use rather thick screws so the threads are pretty deep
if you dont need to dissasemble anymore, use wood or construction glue in combi with screws.
the are not super expensive as you may expect..

I posted some questions on your topic. ;)

Hey, do you still use oil based paints ?
For my next project I'll try some alkyde water based paint which is as resistent as oil based but with no odor and water cleanable (no white spirit).

Yes, always oil based paint (bad odor but great results), I've tried water based paint in the past with ugly results ... :ghost:
-
Well, I suggest you try one day some alkyde water based paints (the next gen paints).
In France, several brands are selling it, like Astral Peintures and others.
I've recently painted the interior doors of my house, and the result, after only two coats, is great. Looks really like oil based paints.

That sure looks like hard work!!!! aligning the stencils...!!! and any problems of paint bleeding under? Any problems removing stencil without peeling paint? Do you take stencils off soon after paint or wait some time?
I've been painting recently.... taping and masking such a pain..... ;)
-
Yeah, the hardest part of this project, I'm really curious about the result, great job so far. ;)
-
are these stencils reusable ?
-
i dont think so

are these stencils reusable ?
No :-\

No problem with stencils removing (it's important to use the same kind of paint for every color). Only a little paint bleeding in 2-3 point, I wait one day to remove the last stencil, soon new pics ... :pac:

Awesome.
I read all your rebuilds....If you ever want to do this for a lifetime. Let me know. I'm your first customer :)
Can you again say something about your PC setup (are you using a 19" CRT here?) and your DOS Boot mode.
thanks

At the moment the cabs are stored in a small warehouse, waiting for a real gameroom, but I don't know when this will happen ... :? :-[

Very nice work!
Ps. ti ho mandato un messaggio in pvt ;)

GREAT work, a lot of love and passion went into that cabinet.
A friend of mine from greece and me are going to open a site for high class cabinet replicas.
We try to find guys that are willing to share the exact measurements and I will modelize the singe parts in Solidworks.
Therefor the users get complete parts lists for every cabinet and the data will even communicate with CNC-devices, so you just download the files from the site, go to the carpenter and get the cab as a puzzle (or you cut it yourself).
Via Solidworks I also can make super real renderings of the cabinets plus the sideart on it and offer explsion-renderings and Videos.
The programm will also tell me if one singe part is not matching 100percent. After the assembling and rendering we can see how the finished product will look like and if it looks 100percent correct.
Over the years there should be 100 of vintage cabinets-plans to download and build.
Hope you guys like the idea and support us doing that :)
Regards Hannes

here are two renderings

Wow! That would be great! Maybe you should open a separate thread for this?

OK, Sir....I will do it now, but since I know forums, I dont expect much reaction..... :roll:

amazing skills like Always !
Great work, although i need to admit that i like the black euro version more colorwise, but thats just a personal opinion.
Great work max ! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
fabulous!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
do you have all your cabs together? how about some pics? and of course i have to ask: what's next?
-
Hi Scr33n,
You really did a terrific job !! -^
It's visually fantastic, and in my opinion, only very few persons in the world could guess this is not a genuine cabinet from Williams !
The stencil part must have been pretty stressfull, but the sides are pure beauty. I just dream I will be able to restore my Robotron CPO with as much talent as you did !
One more time : congratulations !
Your next target could be for example a replica of Battle Zone ! :D ^-^
See you
-
Thanks guys!!
fabulous!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Unfortunately the cabs are all still wrapped in a little warehouse :roll: I know, I don't love this thing, but at the moment no other free places for storage :-[ ... only Robotron and Track & field cocktail are safe in the house.
Next ... but I don't know when the project starts... SCRAMBLE stern cabinet, love the cab and I've great memories about the game.

Beautiful work. Does anyone have the photo references that are now missing from this thread by Scr33n? I'd like to attempt a build like this and see what the measurements are referencing.
Thanks.
