OK regarding the first picture, yes... it's centered  ;)

I have the marquee retainer still in place, but I can guess 10 cm for your arrow number 2 and approx number 1... but just centered it   ;)
It also centered on the width, so you should have approx 18,2c m from both side of the speaker

For the second picture, the middle of the hole is at :

10,5 cm from the back
13 cm from the side
diameter is approx 3 cm

!! your second picture is confusing !! Just rotate it from 180°, and think that the player is in front  ;) Maybe do a picture from the top  ;)

Yes Nuno you're right - I imagined the cab from above and from behind  ???

Thanks for your precious help as always  :-* :-*
Without your help was impossible to continue with this project, too many wrong measures in internet  :-\

I hope that it can be a guide for other people

Tomorrow the work continue (coin door position - marquee zone and speaker zone  :spaceace:)

Wow! Your Galaga is looking fantastic! Great job, let's see more!
Are those L-brackets strong enough to hold the cabinet together? Are you using glue as well?
Alex
Title: Re: Galaga - Scratch Built Replica -

Very impressive  :-*

Same question than Amadama...

Are those L-brackets strong enough to hold the cabinet together? Are you using glue as well?

...because when the monitor will be in place and everything else, the cab' will be much heavy. Not a big problem if the cab stay in the same location, but if you plan to move it sometime, you'll have to do it carefully  :-\

Post by: scr33n on June 02, 2008, 06:24:08 PM
Thanks guys!!!

No problem with L-brackets - already tested with my other cab - and are very strong, for me better than glue  :spaceace:  :spaceace:

OK, here we go :

On your first picture :

1: 24 cm
2: 19,4 cm
3: 28,5 cm

On the second one :

I got the quotes on both side... there are small differences on my cab  :

1: 9,8 cm on one side, the other side is 10,2 cm
2: 69,5 cm on one side, the other side is 68,3 cm

Applying the side art... always a great moment  ;) :-* :-* :-*

Thanks guys !!!!!!!!!!!!

Quick question, where did you get the artwork from ?

from this ebay member:

http://myworld.ebay.com/katriina1934

great arts quality!!!!!

now the bezel zone problem..... impossible to find art bezel (only twobits but don't ship over the sea .... so...) this is my solution:

monitor in the right place:

blocked very well:

plastic bezel from twistedquarter:

a piece of smoked plexy:

sorry a bit of dust  :?

and a piece of transparent glass:

I'll put between the two pieces the bezel arts printed by myself ....

this is my solution for the bezel art retainer:

OK ......  :spaceace:

now the control panel: (I want to use an original Galaga joystick, already buyed from US but not yet received ).

ok for now i use this joystick from twistedquarter (I don't like microswitch joy.... bad feeling for me)

you can see the 9 pin serial cable, I use this for simply connect and disconnect the control panel FROM .......  FROM

my MAGIC BOX  :spaceace: :spaceace:

I can control everything from that box:

Power on/off the TV and switch from normal to RGB channel - power on/off PC and reset, check if the hard disk/PC and speaker are ON

and control the audio volume:

inside the cab the two 9pin connector (CP - MAGIC BOX):

now I can connect the CP with the MAGIC BOX (IPAC2):

YES it works perfectly !!!!!!!!!!!  :-* :-*

This is very ingenious, well done

Regarding the bezel, maybe you should ask to an US member of the board if you can put his address in US, and send it back to you  ;)
That's what I've done for my Pac Man bezel (from twobits.com too).

Great... a new Galaga player soon... I hope we can contest on Galaga  ;D What is your high score so far  ;) :spaceace:

Yes Bruno,  I thought, but too stressful for US member - but if someone wants to help me  :-* :-*

regarding my score, I remember when I was child, around '82-'83 era, my record was about 350.000 points (not bad, I was 9-10 years old ), now with mame and my first cab this is my record:

far away from your, Bruno  :? but now with my new dedicated Galaga cab I can try my best !!!   :spaceace:

continue the project with the electric part:

PC inside the cab (Pentium 3 733mhz - 256 Ram - Nvidia Riva tnt 32 - Sb19 ISA the best - 40 Gb HD - Pure Dos with Advmame+Advmenù)

everything on a piece of MDF:

all the all devices are connected here:

and power on, like the original cab with one switch:

ok some images:

Ah OK. I didn't put one on my cab. I would say it's useless for a private game room  ::) No one should damage the bottom of the cabinet  8)

Now that's what I call: a fine piece of art. Great job indead. I really would love to have your skills for the woodwork but I even can't seem to cut out those both sidepanels, there's always a difference between them if I try, and then the electronics: nice item that "magic box".
I just hope we all will be able to enjoy more pieces of art like this one from you in the futur (just a little hint...  ;) ).

A little addition to my Galaga cab..........

the bezel is the problem:

my old one:

(http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/1592/oldhz9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

printed by me  :P not a great result .... so after months of research I've found a print shop near my country, here the result:

from this piece of glass:

(http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/5000/vetrodv4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

a new silkscreened bezel  :-* :-*

(http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/1631/new1ob8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/9769/new2vv8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7809/new3ii7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/8872/new4iu2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/7339/new5ga7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

from behind:

(http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2199/new6ad6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

in position:

(http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/6558/new8zr1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/3/new9ni4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

 :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

total cost: 15€ glass + 20€ silkscreen job = 35€ for a new Galaga glass bezel  8) 8) not bad

 :-* :-* :spaceace: :spaceace:

Thanks a billion scr33n.  I wish I had something interesting to tell.  My buddy and I got a couple of NBA Jam style cabs for $50 each and thought it would fun to restore them for mame.  $2000 later I'm still not satisfied, so I'm continuing the money pit until I'm happy.

I laminated all the external surfaces, rebuilt the control box (which was the most frustrating part of the whole build), reviewed and tested hundreds of dollars worth of controls, and now I'm finally ready to wire it up.

For the cab theme I chose Galaga, which gave me hours and weeks and months of satisfaction as a teenager. :) I got side art and a custom sized marquee.  The t-molding and all the controls are green.  An artist friend is working on a custom control panel overlay.  I thought about just printing a sticker for the plastic bezel, but after seeing yours, I decided to silkscreen the smoked plexi.
