Yes... an other 'Scratch Built Replica' topic to follow :-*
No problem, I'll help you. Let me few days for that, my Gyruss is blocked inside the V2, I'll have to move others cabinets to access the sides for the measurements you need.
By the way, I still have the Gyruss Bezel reproduction on vinyl (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=731.0) for sale ;)

Excellent choice !

I do not forget you Scr33n, but I'm horribly busy this week (no more car in two days, waiting for the new one to arrive soon, 3 years of taxes to declare...a true nightmare :-X ... a ton of 'non arcade' boring stuff to do  )
I hope to get the measures during next week, but I'll do my best for doing it sooner.

Ok, here's the data :
1: 3 cm
2: 3,2 cm
3: 2,3 cm
4: from 0,6 cm to 0,8 cm (maybe time + humidity is responsible for this difference?)
5: 56 cm
--- from this point, measures were not easy to set, because this cabinet has curves, not straight angles :-\
6: 100 cm
7: 20,5 cm
8: 46 cm
9: 159,3 cm
10 : 69 cm
Hope this can help 8)

I can help with measurements as well, if you want me to check on that variation for you.
A complete coin door is very difficult to find for that machine, good luck.
Can't wait to see your results. This game is the most addicting game in my collection, my favorite by far.
Excellent choice my friend.

weird....
I have taken off the marquee to get an inside pic and to my surprise, the switch appears to be part of the flourescent marquee light housing as one unit. The light fixture is positioned with the on/off switch centered in that hole. I have not seen this setup before. That square hole by the switch is the top of flourescent light fixture.

What I notice that even when sellers in the US ship to Europe or world-wide, they often indicate "not to Italy" because they have had so many bad experiences.
I'm a bit amazed that Italy still has a terrible post system like this today.
P.S. NOTE : with this remark I am _not_ attacking any Italian people out there ! I love Italy and the Italians ! Grazie milla !
-

Me too, I see very often such shipping notification on various US ebay items : No shipping to these following countries : France & Italy !
I've sent months ago something in Italy at it takes ages to come :-\ Fortunately it arrived in one piece.
-
Yes it's a big problem ... :-[
... but in these last two years the service has improved (with priority mail international from USA l've always received everything in 12-14 days - not bad :P)
and it's the first time that I received a package in these conditions (and I've received several packages ...)
so ... hope for a better service in the near future ::)
-
Yes I often see racism against french people, especially in the US.
But this doesn't avoid me of being stolen by a US thief.
c'est la vie.

Here's what I have:

technical question: once you've applied said 4 coats of red, does the thickness of the color then "fill out" the stencil up to the rim (hope you know what i'm talking about)? in other words: how thick is the paint layer after the final coat?

No problems at all Ully - already tested with Burgertime stencils (and remember ... the layers of paint are very thin)

holy smoke, how long does it take to mask of the individual colors? most take forever ...
-
Hopefully that is low-tack tape. It would suck to have the red and yellow paint peel off with the tape.

@scr33n: don't know if i've asked those questions again, but if i have, please answer them again ;)
(1) what type of roller are you using? i've switched to the following rollers lately (called "flockwalze" in german) and the results are pretty good
(2) are you using each roller only once or are you using the same roller for each color?
(3) how long do you let the paint dry between each layer?
(4) what type of paint are you using? oil-based or water-based?
(5) how thick are your layers or rather how much paint do you put on the roller? do you "press" most of the color out of the roller or is it "soaked" with paint before rolling?
thx for your answers :) 8)

Oil-based
(5) how thick are your layers or rather how much paint do you put on the roller? do you "press" most of the color out of the roller or is it "soaked" with paint before rolling?

Hi, I'm new here.
After read all of your "scratch building", I can say that here in Spain, you have a fan.
I'm very impressed with your work and I'm really really interested in your paint process, so continuing with the questions on this topic:
1.- what type of tool are you using for the corners?
2.- If you use oil based paint, I supose that your primer is also oil based, is not?
3.- In other thread I read that you sanding between coats of primer, so I supose your paint process is as: "primer, sanding, primer, sanding, primer sanding, paint, paint, paint"
Is this correct? or are you sanding also between paint coats?
4.- What is the grit you use in your sanding stages?
thx for your answers

Welcome here Tapule and thanks for compliments :spaceace: :spaceace:
1.- what type of tool are you using for the corners?
Little paintbrushes
2.- If you use oil based paint, I supose that your primer is also oil based, is not?
Yep
3.- In other thread I read that you sanding between coats of primer, so I supose your paint process is as: "primer, sanding, primer, sanding, primer sanding, paint, paint, paint"
Is this correct? or are you sanding also between paint coats?
No, this is the correct process:
Primer - sanding - primer - sanding - paint - sanding - paint - sanding - paint
2 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint (in some cases - Q*bert and Track & field - 5 coats of paint )
4.- What is the grit you use in your sanding stages?
400

once again, incredible job - as always. this baby seems to be FLAWLESS! it's hard to tell from the pics, but do you have any orange peel effect on the sides at all? looks as if you have just the right technique to get the colors on without ruining the paint job. i'm still struggling from time to time with the colors, but there could also be a difference between 30 years old wood and completey new one. nevertheless, i envy you for those building and (especially) painting skills. i hope my jungle king stencilling will go down as smoothly as yours. well done!!!
Now I'm officially out of space :-\ :'( :?
ha, i've heard this sentence from you at at least 4 times - there is always space for one more! you're still missing a racer and a williams game - and of course the EDOT 8)
-
One word:
Beautiful!
-
Another word:
awesome!
-
AMAZING !!!!! Great work screen ! (as expected ;D)
SUPERJOB !
-
Impressive job, as always :-*
I would say the colors used on your cabinets looks a little bit more clear & bright than the ones on my original cabinet. I dunno, it's maybe your camera + flash?
Anyway, I'm waiting the full HD movie on youtube ::) ;D
PS : I'm gonna take my hiscore back... it's just a matter of time  ;)
-
Holy cow!!! This is an incredible job... AGAIN!!!
The force is definitely with you ;)
Now... go play!
-
Thanks guys!!!
I would say the colors used on your cabinets looks a little bit more clear & bright than the ones on my original cabinet. I dunno, it's maybe your camera + flash?
Yes, the camera flash change the colors brightness :-\
But I've downloaded tons of Gyruss cab pics from internet and no color is equal to another (so strange, maybe the 27 years make the difference :?).
I used these colors: http://www.gamestencils.com/index.php?sc_page=41 check the Gyruss section
and i scanned the colors from the old cpo ... so ... ::) in any case I'm happy with the final result
Anyway, I'm waiting the full HD movie on youtube ::) ;D
Sorry no full HD :-\ :-X but stay tuned ...
-
I used these colors: http://www.gamestencils.com/index.php?sc_page=41 check the Gyruss section
aren't those colors for a specific american brand?

Cool video, I love the Gyruss music, get's me really hyped!
-
Wow, that turned out nice. I've never seen a Gyruss with the side art in good shape. Of course, if you want to make it authentic, you need to carve random initials into the side art.
-
As usual... perfect! You're the master of the scratch built replica! I'm sure this is not your last cabinet ::) :P
But maybe you should take a break and enjoy your games... wait! no ! Do not play them... I don't want you improve your High scores, especially the Galaga & ...Gyruss ones... (Damn! After the planet Mars, the game is very hard & fast )
Of course

Talking 'bout high-scores: I've must have been 'round 17 or 18 years old, Gyruss was still a hot game in those days and I was always playing the game back then. One wednesdayafternoon I did set my personal record: after playing the same game for 3 or 4 hours I reached a high score over 8.000.000, was on stage over 300 (the game sets it back to 0 after stage 99) and I still had 11 lives left when I had to go home for dinner. After that day I didn't play the game that much anymore, but even today on my mamecab, it's normal for me to reach earth at least 2 times. But ofcourse, I'm still wondering how long I would have played the game if didn't had to go home that wednesday ??? ... .
-
Just had to dig up this old topic, but what a great one, I didn´t read it before, but since I´m the proud owner of an original Gyruss cab since yetserday (came with Love´s container), I am doing some reading of Gyruss related topics.
I am not planning to do a lot of work on my Gyruss, it is in great shape. But I might replace the CPO in the future, so I am wondering how the CPO quality is from Arcadeshop? Can you tell something about it now that you have used it a few years? And is it silkscreened, or inkjet?
-
Hey guys, I'm building a Gyruss from scratch. This info has been crucial so far, but there are some bits and pieces missing from the thread.
Could anyone who has one help me out with some dimensions?
Once I'm done I'd like to put the info together into some jakobud style plans.
Excited though! I only have the control panel and a handful of bits so far.
Cheers!
-
Also - if anyone could measure up the glass that would be super..!
Cheers

sc33n is the guy for scartch builds so he is the one to call (or ckong or darthnuno), pics please! ;D
