Title: I need al the encouragement I can get....
Post by: level42 on August 31, 2010, 06:07:42 PM
...friends, as you've all seen on the various pics here, i have a weight problem. I was never too fussy about it but the last year I really started to hate myself for it.
Getting out of the car, walking up to Ully's place, it was all getting pretty hard for me and hey I'm only 42. Luckily my health itself is still very good. No sugar, no high cholesterol (a small miracle IMHO) and my heart is still doing fine as well. But I seriously want to keep it that way and not wait until bad things start happening.....

Now, I finally started today with a serious weight reduction program. This is not "weight watchers" or anything like that, but done with professional help etc.

The first part is either following a very strict diet or completely forgetting about food and using "meal-shakes" instead. I chose the last option because I'm not the kind of guy to weigh 130 grams of this and 50 grams of that before I actually eat.

Three shakes a day is much simpler.

However, this is just to reach a certain "starting" weight quickly. After that comes the serious work in getting into a much healthier eating habit.

The first start will take 20 weeks in this program....and that really only is the start... Habits that you built up in tens of years are not quickly "unlearned". It may take 3-5 years in total.

Anyway, I need your cheers for support guys :D

(And if you see some pissed off postings here, you know where it comes from ;) )

good luck, andré, i totally support you!
i know how difficult it is to lose weight and - more importantly - to keep it, especially over the christmas period. i was up to 93.7 kilos again, couldn't get a single one of my trousers to fit anymore (at least not without one button open) and was out of breath quickly. started on the first of june with a "low fat 30 diet" and now, after 3 months, i'm down to 78.9 again, which means 15 kilos in 3 months. i've also started to restructure my eating habits and think about what i'm eating a little bit more. this does not mean that mc donald's is out of the question, just not 3 times a week ;).

as i've said: GOOD LUCK! it's hard, but i'm sure you will succeed!

Good for you André  :)  I know how you feel, and I could do with some less weight also, but I still have problems to find my backbone. I have done a few succesfull serious weight reductions in the past, and look where I'm now  :-\ I sometimes feel like a jojo. The difficult part is not to lose weight, but chancing your eating habbits so that the lost weight will stay away. Does this 'diet' has a special name?

Anyway, I wish you lots of luck. Please don't forget to post pictures of yourself now and then or else we might not reckognize you anymore in due time.  ;D

Toi toi toi.

very important: take a picture of you NOW and compare it with where you are in a couple of months. believe me: this will give an extra boost!

Go go!
Well, it´s always hard to loose weight - i know!
A really good way to loose weight is how i did it this year, not that i hope it will happen for you (the first part!!!)

Well, it started when i met a very VERY sweet, nice, etc girl which felt the same way i did!
2 months later over a period of 5 days it went from White to Black! and it really killed me! - so the next 2½ month i had a lump in my stomach all the time, reducing my eating to almost nothing (went from 96kg to 81kg)
Now i´m fine again, but i like to stay on 80-83kg so instead of eating a whole pizza, i only eat ½ a pizza, and that really goes for everything i eat....
The first 14 days to 3 weeks was a killer, but after that amount of time my stomach some how learned that no matter what it did, it did´nt get anymore food!
It also helps that no candy, snacks etc is in the house!!!!
And sometimes, 1 or 2 days in the week ill only eat lettuce for lunch (18.00 hrs) but ill eat 1kg of it!

But i will def. cheer on you so we get a success story!!!!

I wish you a lot of success in that André.
I'm sure you'll handle this, as you already handled a ton of things here.
Good luck... and don't start to smoke!

Waha, yes that's funny, I never smoked (well the occasional cigarette and cigar, let's say 2 or 3 per year...)  and I _know_ that it takes away any hunger feelings. But rest assured I hate smoke...

OK, although I hate seeing them, I said A, so I also have to say B:

Good luck Level42!
I myself lost 10 kg total. Went from 91 kg to 81 kg with the Sonja Bakker program. It works just fine. Not using the program now anymore, but i stay around my ideal weight.

Level 42: I have the same problem: I need to lost over 100Kgs.
My dietologist, give me a plan with everithing I can eat or not.
The milkshake isn't a good way to loose weight... is the opposite way: Your organism lost wather not "fat" material
and, when You eat normally, He re-gains all the weight You lost plus other.
The correct diet is composite from all type of food, not excluding this or that.
The weight lost in a month can vary from 1Kg to a max of 5Kg (for a correct weight lost).
For example: Breakfast: fruit smoothie: apple 150gr pear 150gr semi-skimmed milk 100gr; Lunch: fresh beans in tomato sauce: beans 240gr, tomatoes 80gr, turkey breast grilled 70gr, raw or cooked fennel at will, oil 15gr, bread 40gr, oranges 260gr; Dinner: rice in vegetable broth 30gr, parmesan5gr, poached egg n°2, green beans with olive oil 250gr,oil 10gr, bread 40gr, pears 270gr.
The dietologist say: eat at Your will lot of fruit and vegetables!

Try an let Me know ( if You need I can scan the pages that I have of My diet, but are in Italian ). ;)

@Flip: yes you are right and this is also known with the therapists, so , as I already mentioned, the shakes is only a starting point to quickly get under a certain BMI (I think it's 40, I'm at 43 now). After that (probably a couple of weeks) the program is aimed at regaining a normal eating habit. In fact preventing the yo-yo effect is the main point of the program. It's not "dieting" it's about "re-programming" yourself.

Thanks for the tips though and your support, I hope you reach your goal !!! Loosing 100 kgs...wow. My goal for the coming years is 50kg. but we set more short term and realistic goals first. The thing is that if you don't reach the goal you've set for yourself you get frustrated again and you may fall back again because of that... I would be _really_ happy if I would reach my end goal, but I know it's still years away.

Another thing they told us is that at a certain point you will actually stop loosing weight for a longer period of time (maybe even half a year). I have experienced this too and that's the dangerous period because then you think: it doesn't matter what I try, I'm not loosing any more weight so I might just as well take that snack. (and in the first time, you won't notice that snack in your weight either). But then you start to get back in the bad habbits. It's this time period that I fear the most....they explained that your body will reach a certain balance for a while. It _is_ possible however to lose weight after that period again. And then you will probably reach another "flat" period....

Anyway, I am very aware that this is a fight I will have to continue for the rest of my life. I don't have the genes that some people seem to have who can eat all they want and not gain a gram.... :-\

Same here, until my 30th birthday i have a weight of 68 kg, and i can eat what i want, and not a gram is added..

for the last 5 years i gained some weight, i have not changed my eating habbits, and now i am at 74 - 76 Kg's (the last time i measured..)

thats a 6 -8 KG more than i always had.
Thanks god it stays around 75 Kg's whatever i eat or drink (at least thats the case when i measured the last time, wich is actualy some time ago)

I do smoke though... maybe this is part of it too ? , and i almost dont drink alcoholical beverages (only a beer with chinese food in the summer  )

anyway , i have a friend who also was in and out of diets lost a lot of kg's and manages to stay in shape now, so its hard but possible !

Dont give up andre !, we are here with you !  ;)

I lost 1kg a week with the Sonja Bakker program. And the "nice" thing is, you still eat varied and tasty things, albeit small portions. But snacks are permitted between meals.
My weight stays about on target, even though i am not following the program anymore. But I still use a couple of nice salad and pasta recipes from the books. Just watch what you eat a little bit better than before. No second plates and such.. Not to much unhealthy snacks. The simple things.

My dad used a shake-diet way back at the end of the eighties. It didn't seem to help very much. And i can imagine you become a little grumpy from only getting shakes instead of meals.

Good luck!

Andre, good luck my friend, we are all here to support you in this. try not to be negative about yourself now, you are doing something very positive which will need lots of dedication from you. the rewards will be great to you, just think how much harder you'll be dancing in any gigs you may go to ;)
one day at a time andre, this is not a diet but a new healthier (arcade) lifestyle.
try and keep your activity up, it is easy to get lazy when you drop dramatically your calorie intake, i'm sure the diet person will have told you about this, push yourself to do an extra walk a day, you will see the benefits of your new food choices even sooner

Thanks for all the encouragements, and polaris, you hit the nail on the head as we say over here.... thanks ! :D

So the end of day 3. It's going very well actually.
Only this night I had some hunger and I ate 2 of those extremely light weight (just fibers, they almost float) crackers. Of course with nothing on them.
I'm actually amazing myself.
The only hard moments of the day is when I get home from work (which used to be a regular "snack" moment) and when my wife and son are having their evening meal (I guess the British call it "tea", which I still find very strange, since there's usually no tea at all....).
But I always take the 3rd shake of the day together with them so that that is my "tea"... ;D

This brand of shakes I use also has muesli and puddings. Might add those for a bit of variety (that is, instead of a shake).

To be continued !

So.....one week done (almost, I started on tuesday). Even though my parents-in-law were married 60 years this weekend and we had a dinner on saturday night and today we were out with the whole family (a bus full) with again a dinner I kept to the diet pretty well. There was a UK friend of the family over who stayed with us and we went out to eat an sunday as well. So that's three days of "eating out"....what a torture ;D

The sunday was a "Wok" restaurant though (the best around IMHO) and I LOVE the food there but I managed to instead of a shake eat just three small pieces of salmon that were done on the Tippan yaki (for our Japanese friends, I hope I spelled that correctly). The other night was not too special food so I was much less "teased"....

So, fish is not fat, and it's baked on a plate with very little fat (I think it may be olive oil ?)

Anyway, I'm down at least 5 kg's but I should weigh tomorrow morning to know exactly. I KNOW that the first week it's easy and going fast so I'm not over-exited, but it feels GOOD. It's amazing how only 5kg makes a difference.
So an encouraging prologue, now to keep it up :D

Just for maximum support, I also started a diet yesterday, I eat only fruits and drink Puridren, which is removing the acid from your body and helps to loose weight.I lost 1 kg. yesterday, but as you said the first week is easy and going fast. ;)
Your first week well done, good luck my friend! ;D

This is a very strange topic on an grown-up boys forum. But all the responses and encouragements just show how great our community is.

So Belike and André, let's make this a group effort. Meaning that I will join you from today. This just might be the push that I need. My goal is to loose 15 kgs in the first stage, and maybe 5 more in the second stage. I won't follow a specific 'official diet' I will just cut down on the snacks, alcohol, meal portions, choose good combinations for dinner, try to get regularity in my eating pattern and excercize a bit (or a lot) more.

Yeah, I want to be a lean mean gaming machine again!  :D

I brought it out in the open as much as possible. The reason is that it's another good motivation for me :D (Stok achter de deur).

Etienne: my son likes to fool around with the DVM too. Esp. the diode-check setting of course causing it to beep when shorted. I explained him and encouraged him how to examine different stuff if it would conduct electricity or not.

Have to be careful that he doesn't get TOO technical however, if anything he should _not_ become a technician for the terrible salary....

yes the rate will slow down , this is the time to push yourself with a little more exercise, a little walk in the evening, not using elevators all the way but walking the few sets of stairs extra, easy to fit in your day and will help lots.

Only a day or three. But sometimes it does come back. Not often but sometimes.

Yesterday I had my single normal meal in the week as I promised myself. I had a deep wish.
It had something to do with a B and a K....

And I treated me to it. Right after that it was back to the shakes again STRICTLY ! :D

andres suggestion of water is good, try hard my friend it wont be easy. are you on shakes for every meal?
i might be tempted to start the day with a good cereal not a shake to help with the hunger, it will be a good part of a weightloss program too. something to consider if the shakes are too much all the time.
silly question, do you guys eat cereal in europe, whenever i get offered a european breakfast its bread ham and cheese

You liar!  ;) :D I do feel hungry.

I started today with the shakes, strawberry. André already told me that the first 3 days are heavy. But I will survive, I only have to drink these shakes for 2 or 3 weeks, after that I can swap one shake a day for a regular light meal. but until then, no hot meals for me.

@polaris, yes we know and eat cereals, at least I do, about 3-4 times a week in the morning. But for now I'm on shakes for every meal.

No most people don't eat cereal here. We have local small bakeries that provide REAL fresh, and high quality bread, compared to what's usual called "bread" in the UK and the US and is sold at supermarkets. I'm sorry but you guys don't know bread really. Often it's so bad you will need to toast it first before it's possible to consume at all...

The only time I eat cereal is holiday, I do like it but it's not something we eat every day here, at least most people don't.

I am of course talking about the Dutch situation. I'm pretty sure it's mostly the same in Belgium too.

Anyway....I seem to be experiencing something unexpected.....

I'm cold ! My wife is comfortable and the room temperature is 21 degr (first time I turned on the heating today).
But I'm cold. Cold hands. Cold feet.

Could this be due to the diet ? I mean, I'm not burning anything....and of course I have a little less "isolation" ;)

when you drop your calorie intake dramatically, your body reacts by slowing down and doing less work. it will pass im sure as your body gets used to the calorie intake

warm your feet is the advice i can give, when your feet are warm, your whole body will feel warmer..
it sounds girly, but a footbath helps really good, and after that put on "geitenwollen sokken"  :D
sorry dont know the english word for that (see the pic below for the non dutch people)

Today is day 2 for me, and I didn't feel hungry when I woke up.  :)  And better yet, for the first time I really enjoyed the shake, thanks to André. He told me to put a bottle of water in the fridge and use it for the shakes, they taste so much better when they are cold.

-12 Kg. after 3 weeks....

Not bad, not bad. But I do have a feeling that its' getting a bit harder now (as expected). You know, I now feel "normal" with the way I feel, as opposed to after a week or two it still felt "special" to have lost so much weight in such short time.

Anyway, I'll keep going !

I had a week moment two days ago......couple crackers with delicious Dutch cheese (nothing is better), a little chocolate and o-my-god even a small icecream....damn.

I was mad at myself after it....still I still lost 200 grams that day....

However, I made a great revenge on myself yesterday and was 100% strict to the diet again and was greatly rewarded with it by the scale....

Today we have a match with the drumband and afterwards we always eat Chinese at our club so that will be my weekend meal this week...going to love it but will keep it to small portions.

When I have to eat something I don't like (which is usually 'clean' food like salad or tomatoes...), I use to think about this sequence in the Matrix movie, see right here : http://io9.com/389720/the-tastiest-food-moments-in-science-fiction

Two weeks have gone by since I started with the diet and I now already lost 7 kgs.  ;D ;D

Best thing is that I don't feel that hungry anymore. but I do miss a hot meal, I've only lived on shakes and instant puddings the last 14 days (OK, last Sunday I had a weak moment and I ate a small piece of grilled salmon. It was delicious).

But the weight loss gives me courage for the next week.

Heyhey, nice meeting you and Ms.Ckong again yesterday ! Great that you came over to look at our marching band :)

We did pretty well despite that we all were not 100% satisfied about how we performed, good points though: 93.xx (I can't remember what was behind the .) That is actually a very high score for an official contest. However, there were 2 bands with even higher points so some mixed feelings....anyway, the mission is succeeded with this score we should qualify again for the Dutch national championships next year in Barneveld.

Anyway, the 7 kgs really showed ! Congrats and I'm glad the hungry feeling went away as I mentioned.

Had a nice Chinese meal again yesterday and even so, I'm now almost at -16 Kg !!! Woohoo !

3 weeks have gone by now and I lost 9 kgs!!!!  ;D I never expected this result which I owe to this special shake diet. Yesterday evening I rewarded myself with a nice dinner at a restaurant, together with my wife of course and a guy whose brother is the famous Dutch soccer player Johnny Rep. I ate only meat and vegetables though, I had the will-power to stay off from the french fries.  :D

Today starts week 4 and again I will only 'eat' shakes this week.

I'm sure that you will recover coming week and come back very strong. GO FOR IT!!  :)

You may find it silly, but I weigh myself every two days and I input the data in Excel. I made a line graph with two lines, a red one which shows the weight at the end goal and a blue one which shows my actual weight. It is very motivating for me to see that the blue line is only decreasing and that the vertical space between the two lines is getting smaller and smaller.

Wow that's incredible since you had a much better starting weight than I.

I had a really tough week last week and since I have already long reached and passed the goal of this program (10% weightloss) I am now "allowed" to eat a "normal" meal each evening, although very restricted in amounts.
I actually stayed around the same weight last week since I started to do "bad things" again because of my complete boredome with the shakes. Well no wonder after 7 weeks !!!
It felt great to have a normal meal yesterday evening and I am already loosing weight again so, I'm happy :)

That's great news André.  I can imagine that you are tired of the shakes, after 7 weeks. I want to keep it with shakes only for one or two more weeks (the choclat shake is my new favourite) and then I will go to phase two. But I do long for a 'boterham' very much. And I reward myself every sunday evening with a hot meal.

I wonder how Belike is doing.

Goodmorning all,

I just stumbled over this topic and I just wanted to tell you are all doing a great job! Keep up even in the hard times, eventually it will pay off.

Back in 2000 I was diagnosed Diabetes Type 2. So, I needed to loose some weight which I did. I did it by changing my eatingpattern, no more drinking beers, stay of the chips, chocolats, sweets and the soda's with sugar in it. Stay low on the carbs (potatoes, pasta, rice) unlimited vegetables, and around 100-150 grams meat. In this way I managed to loose about 45kg. Honestly it didn't go very fast but I succeeded. And, although it isn't one of my favorite hobby's, start sporting! That will really make a difference!!!

First of all, congrats for your results it's very impressive! ;D
I could loose 5 kgs, now I'm between 86-87.
I usually drink 1 or 2 shakes daily and eat low fat, hot meal once.
The first 5 kgs was piece of cake, but from now it's really hard to loose weight and as I work for a drink wholesales, I also have necessary dinners and "product tasting" parties that I couldn't miss! :( ;D
The final goal is 80 kgs, I hope I can make it this year! ;D

That must be tough Belike, but still you already lost 5 kgs, which is a great achievement. I'm sure that you will make it to 80 kgs.

@Brry71, 45 kgs! Amazing, but you did succeed. You had to of course, having diabetes. But you must have felt great back then that you did it. I mean, loosing weight isn't only a physical thing, the mental reward is also huge. And the 'diet' that you mention is exactly the way I intend to change my eating habbits.  :) And I will start sporting again in two weeks, first I want to loose 2.5 more kgs. By the way, nice action photo.  :)

The greatest reward for me was...

...that it is a lot, and I really mean a lot, easier to find new clothes. Nowadays they always have the size I'm wearing, even when there is a sale. I do remember how hard it was to find a suit or just some casual clothing in bigger sizes... A lot easier now. And, of great influence on the self confidence!

The picture was shot a a MTB race in the northern part of the Netherlands, a couple of years back.... Not the best result or even the result I planned but I did make it!

I reached, and passed my goal weight:

I have now lost 15.7 kgs and reached my initial goal. My BMI went down from 32.7 to 27.7 And because it went pretty easy I set a new, final goal, which means another 3.8 kgs. Should be doable in 4-5 weeks and then it will be enough, it will bring my BMI below 27, which is good enough for me.

I'm happy.  ;D
Title: Re: I need al the encouragement I can get....
Post by: level42 on November 05, 2010, 08:40:25 AM
Hah....funny.....that's exactly what was discussed at our group last week. Once you reach a goal you had in mind before, you'll want to set a new one and that's also the worst possible trap that can lead back up to a (much) higher weight.

So....not saying you should stop, just take it slow. Have you already begun to do some meals again ? I would if I were you. Yes the "decent" will slow a bit, but that's no problem.

I am at -19 kg now. That last 1 kg took a long time but that's OK. The initial goal was to reach -10% of our original weight. I've long reached that. Now I'm trying to balance stuff for a while. Or maybe forever if possible. If the result will be a slow decrease in weight that is probably better and easier to sustain....
Title: Re: I need al the encouragement I can get....

.... Once you reach a goal you had in mind before, you'll want to set a new one and that's also the worst possible trap that can lead back up to a (much) higher weight.

Fortunately I do realize that. however the second, final, goal was always the intention. But when I started I thought that could never happen, so I set my primary goal a little less extreme. And because it is going so well (almost 16 kgs in less than 7 weeks), I decided to go for my initial intent.

Until today I ate one or two hot meals per week, but tonight we will go to a restaurant with friends (planned long ago), so I guess today is a good day to start with fase 2. And I will indeed slow it down a bit so that I can 'slide' into having regular and healthy eating habbits slowly.

I have lost 20.2 kgs and I reached my second and final target weight. Now it's the ultimate goal to maintain this achievement, which is by far a much greater, and a lifetime, challenge. But I'm positive that I will succeed to change my eating habbits permanently. Only the future will tell of course.

I had a strange experience on the weight scale this morning. It was the first time I stood on it since mid december. Although I officially stopped my diet end november, I kept very cautious with what I am eating: no candy, no beer, now and then a glas of wine, a few 'oliebollen' and 'appelbeignets' with xmas, but nothing extravagant. And this resulted in another few kgs. weight loss, now -23.7 in total.  :o I thought that I noticed that my new pants were getting very loose, and I was right.  :)

So it is good to realize that having healthy eating habits do work.

Hi,
I stopped smoking more than two years ago. I smoked a long time and something like a packet every day and then started rolling my cigarettes. But in the winter I got sick and could not smoke for three days, so I thought, it would be really stupid to start again and I simply did not smoke anymore. And I'm totally fine with it. You only have to remember that you never have to smoke again. In the beginning it was a little bit tough. I had to learn to resist the desire to smoke and it worked fast. Simply don't smoke, that's the whole trick :D
I wish you all the best!

Maximum support for that decission, smoking is unhealthy, smells like hell and very expensive. :P

Way to go Etienne! Each time you want to smoke, instead of buying a pack, put the money in a piggy bank.
When it will be full, you'll be very proud of yourself and can head up straight to the closest bar with that money buy yourself a super cool arcade related stuff, that will be the best trophy !
YOU can do it!
When it's tough remember that humans don't smoke, only machines do. ;)
go! go! go!

I found joining the gym and getting a training program helped me.

I was 6'6" and only 95KG. Now after 5 years of training i'm 122KG.

YEAH!

succes Etiènne, I'm sure that you will succeed. Just remember, if you stop smoking, you will live longer, probably die in a more pleasant way and enjoy your family longer. What more encouragement do you need?  :)
