Title: (Arcade) Documentaries
Post by: Superully on June 08, 2011, 01:08:18 PM

just curious: has anyone from this forum watched once upon atari or get lamp yet? how cool would it be if they were to show up on etienne's server miraculously. 8) additionally, etienne's server is somewhat empty without special when lit and doctor kong ... ;)

i've just watched game over: kasparov and the machine (again) the other day and while it is not arcade stuff as we know it, this documentary has to do with machines and i think it totally kicks ass!!! imho one of the best ones out there!

Things are FAR FAR from sure yet, but IF things go well, we will have a pinball at Eurocade that even the most HARDCORE pinball hater will want to have a try at  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

We all now the only reason why I'm attending Eurocade is to take that historical picture of Ully playing pinball!

HUH......?? Pinball......Ully.......Pinball.......Ully.........HUH ? ? ? ?

strange, right? but those pins in the documentary have a video monitor in them (pinball 2000), so i had to watch it ;). additionally, i'm a fan of tim burton's mars attacks! however, i still think that both revenge from mars and the star wars pinball 2000 flippers are pretty lame - i simply don't get the fascination.

can only be baby pac-man, btw a pinball i would consider putting into my gameroom if i could get it for cheap! probably the only one

baby pacs are never cheap....

Noooooo, I'm not talking about a pinball with a monitor inside, well, not a real one...

Maybe I get my VP pcb fixed till then ;) the rest of the cab ist working (tested with Lascheks working board). It's fun! The optic is amazing. If I get it on track on time I can leave a mini (or both) home and bring the VP. Till now it's not working though.
Title: Re: (Arcade) Documentaries
Post by: level42 on June 08, 2011, 04:19:47 PM
That would be brilliant !!! I haven't even plugged in my VP yet (pointless, there's still a ROM missing on the PCB ;))

@Ully: Video Pinball DOES have a real monitor in there.....keep guessing :D

Post by: PunkRockCaveman on June 08, 2011, 05:06:24 PM
If it's only the ROMs I have a working romset for you. I swapped my PALs (all 16 of them), because eight or nine were messed up. I got a romset from a klov-guy that uses the spare rom sockets on the board and needs only four roms instead of 16 PALs. Just drop me a pm if you need them ;)

Oh, not ANOTHER documentary that focusses on (top) players.     I am SO fed up with those.....

Why the F.... doesn't anyone make a documentary on the COLLECTORS. The people who love the MACHINES, painfully restore the cabs, repair the electronics, reproduce the artwork etc. etc.
Film the guy who can simply turn on a machine and just watch it, admiring it...being proud of his resto-work....show the people who have a big smile on their face when someone else is playing their machine..

The players are only the end of the line. I play, yes I play, but I suck at it, who cares, as long as I have fun, but for me, and I feel for so many others, this is only one (minor) aspect about this beautiful hobby.

The players get WAAAAAY too much attention IMHO....I bet it has to do with the US's competitive society...

Jason Scott, the guy who made the excellent BBS Documentary and Get Lamp is looking for funds to launch 3 new series of documentaries, one of them being about arcades.

If anyone can do this right, it's him (he also runs textiles.com )

Go give him some money, and invite him over.

And a new one that looks promising, all about our hobby :

The Space Invaders: In Search of Lost Time (http://vimeo.com/50465335) (click the link for the video)

Beginning with Space Invaders in 1978, arcade games began to appear everywhere.
In 1982, 13,000 dedicated arcade locations existed across North America, generating $3.2 billion dollars in 1983 alone, the hard way: one quarter at a time.
By 1985, revenue had fallen 97%. Atari declared bankruptcy. Arcades began to disappear.
Most of the old games were converted or destroyed. A few, packed into warehouses, largely forgotten for another decade.
"The Space Invaders: In Search of Lost Time" is the story of classic obsession, the second life of games in basements and garages across the country.

So I watched it until the end.
The editing is a bit haphazard and there's lots of filler content, but it gets better, not amazingly better but interesting enough to keep watching.

At least this one has the merit of making collectors look like relatively normal people.

The description says "Atari declared bankruptcy" (In 1985) I don't know where they got that from but it is total nonsense of course.....Consumer was sold to Tramiel in 1984, Warner kept the arcade part and ran it as Atari Games from that point....

Hah !

I already had Jeff as a Facebook friend and we just had a small chat. I think he was a bit worried about it and he offered his apologies for not trying harder to contact me about it. He promised me to send a free Blu-Ray disc of the movie when they come out, and that's fine with me........ ;D After all it's just a couple of seconds and well, it is cool to see some Euro-arcade stuff in a US movie :)

Also a good excuse to buy something I can play Blu-Rays on.......like a PS3/4 ?    ;D ;D

I watched "the space invaders - in search of lost time" yesterday evening.
It was interesting to be able to put faces and voices on some guys from the scene.

Tiny spoiler alert, so don't read further if you haven't seen it:
The end was not very subtlte in underlining 5 times with a sad music and pictures that: now is the emotional moment.

Other than that I never seem to get enough of these old arcade footage, so I quite enjoyed it.

- Does it educate about eighties neon, high waisted, skimpy clothing styles: Check

Is Archer not in it ? Then it must be boring, right Gyruss ? ;););)

And can somebody explain me why we need 4 minute trailers these days ? Why not 30 seconds or a minute ?

I feel like having seen the entire thing after these long trailers....

I always wonder how someone can play nonstop for 44 hours???
Eating and drinking while playing might be ok, Nibbler only has a joystick, but.....erm...you know what I mean?
On some games it's possible to rack up so many extra lives that you can walk away and lave it alone for five minutes. Some games may have a bug or hidden feauture to "park" the game like Aart explained about Galaxian, but he didn't trust it enough to leave it.....I actually asked him about it and he said he uhmmm, made sure he didn't have to go plus, Galaxian is "only" about 8 hours for a WR....

I wonder most about how they don't fall asleep, happen to see a documentary about that yesterday and they showed there was some medicine called Modafinil that would keep you running for nights....it showed a Canadeian guy who was working 100 hours a week because instead of sleeping he went back to the office during the nights......I say he'll pay the price sooner or later...

I just bought the Special Collector's Edition. http://www.thespaceinvaders.org/purchase/bluray/

I had to because there is (only) one tiny, tiny, tiny stain on my memories from last RGE weekend, and that is the 25 minutes of my life that I waisted by watching The Video Craze (partly, I sneeked out after 25 minutes), and I hope that this 'Space Invaders .....' documentary will wipe that stain away.  :)

ever since the RGE, I have these dreams of a guy in a pacman suit :pac:, he does all kind of silly things that don´t seem to have any use or purpose

Did anyone have a look when the VC was showing for the public on sunday ? Any people there ?

I was thinking maybe for non-collectors it might be a bit more interesting....apart from the  :pac: scenes of course....

To compensate guys, here's a Remi Gaillard classic, to show what IS funny:

A GREAT one, right here (http://vimeo.com/74438437). Pinball's rebirth REPLAY!

Pinball is back in a big way. This short documentary illustrates its rebirth along with what people in NYC are doing keep pinball thriving and proclaiming it is still has as much cultural relevance as it idd in the 1970s.

....and don't tell anybody, but we are actually screening it one day before the world premiere :)

On and dont forget we also show Space Invaders which is also a good documentaire IMHO.

aaaaaaaaaand........dont forget to go watch the footage about classic gaming that Sound & Vison delved out of their huge archives. Some, if not all of that stuff is absolutely brilliant to see again today. Some examples:
