Title: [Superully's Roadtrip] Into the Wild
Post by: Superully on August 17, 2012, 10:42:48 PM

this morning i woke up thinking to myself, "how about doing something crazy? how about doing something adventurous? how about doing some lost places exploration?". so i took out my roadtrip location map and indeed found a nice spot in the middle of nowhere i hadn't been to yet (believe me, those places really exist ;)). after getting some safety instructions, letting everyone know where i was headed to and writing my last will i jumped into my car ...

... and headed off into the wild!

after some confusing navigating, i arrived at an abandoned building. i knew i had to be right, because - as we've learned from mr indiana jones himself - the X marks the spot

after i had found a way in, this is what the building looked like inside :o :o :o

puh, didn't look very promising, but when i turned around a corner, my eyes lit up and my heart began beating faster! :)

from here on out, things got better and better! in an adjacent room, two more cabinets nicely stored away :P

the right cab was generic, but the left one looked promising, but couldn't be reached from up front, so i had to climb on top of it, hold out my camera and hope for some nice shots. here they are

everything seems to be there, apart from one tiny piece: THE F***ING LASERDISK PLAYER!!! but who cares? ;)

anyway, when i looked up i saw a collapsed floor right above me

i had to get up there, no matter what, so i looked around and found a cute stairway leading upwards

the same stairway viewed from above! as you can see, the lower section of it has already collapsed ...

when i looked around again, i saw nothing but dirt, wooden planks, metal bars and decay!

but wait a minute, what's that over there, in the tiny room at the very end?

HA - I KNEW IT!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

although dirty and rusty, the games seem to be in ok condition

after removing some dirt, the space encounters' control panel looked fabulous!

however, i'm not 100% sure whether the monitor had been necked or not, upon first inspection i thought yes, but i'm not so sure anymore ...

the sides of the space zap would come out nicely once cleaned up

unfortunately, not all the boards were present anymore :'(

of the four upstairs cabs, the battlezone looks the best inside, only one pcb is missing!

and then there's universal's cosmic alien, apart from the missing marquee it is complete

from what i could tell, everything's there on the inside as well! :)

finally, i found a great (non-arcade related) item: a super(ully) massator!!! hilarious, isn't it?

thus ended my roadtrip adventure today. i had an incredible time exploring the premises and there's so much more i could tell (and show) you, but i can't give away anything else for now!

but rest assured: this hasn't been my last trip into the wild ...

Wow... great treasures in the middle of nowhere!

Did you plan to get all these games? What is the story behind that place? More details please!  ;)

Funny... I've just watched few days ago this fantastic movie

thx for your comments, guys! as i've already said, i can't disclose any more information for now, but i'm working on something basically as we speak. just wanted to add that no illegal action has been going on here, no breaking in, no nothing - everything was planned and supervised 8). so this is not going to be a "second sundance disaster"!!!

it's so weird.  these cabs have been played in front sea or other joy places,  loads of kids have dreamed of having them.  and one day they disappeared  and reappear in a wasteland .   it's so adventure loaded !.   raiders of the lost modern ark !!

a video of the discover would have been much more intense !!!    personnaly each trip i could go or cemetery arcade, i recorded with cam !!  8)

Mehhhhh, such a shame it was all legal,,you take the fun out of it ! And no great "Sundance" thread.....:(

( for those who don't know the Sundance story, do a search on KLOV forum...... )

Another amazing find, wonder how you get those locations.

I wonder even more why someone in the 80s actually put those machines there.....and for what ??
I mean the games were not making any money anymore, why not just scrap them ?

I mean, I am happy they didn't, but it just makes no sense to put written off games in a location like that and to leave them there for.....ages....

there is a reason behind why they are exactly there, believe me, but once again you will have to wait, otherwise i would give away the location - which i don't want to do as of yet!!! sure you understand

Nice story Ully. And I noticed a modern electrical saw in one of the pictures, so I guess you came prepared.

I want to make a guess about why and how these games came there. They were put there intentionally in the eighties because they were illegal gaming spots. If I am correct, visiting arcades in the eighties was (almost) illegal for the youth in Germany, so kids who wanted to play these games had to go to secret, hidden places. Kind of an underground movement.  ;D

i will most likely be going back there coming tuesday. hell, i could even bring that space zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzap to eurocade, i'm pretty sure it doesn't matter that there are only 4 (out of 6) pcbs still present in the cab ... ;)

and in case oll is coming to eurocade, we might try his pcb setup!!! 8)

Oll won't be making it to Eurocade this year, regretfully.  :'(

Space Zap is one brilliant game and a very cool little cabinet. If I had the space......
It has this elementary simple gameplay but it is so well balanced that you want to keep trying again and again.

For those who played the great Cosmic Arc by Activision on the Atari 2600, this is where they got the idea from....

superully's roadtrip into the wild continues ...

as you can imagine, i had to return to that place again and because it is of no interest to me anymore now, i can reveal the location and the story behind the building which once was a pizzeria and a disco under one roof. when the owner of the disco died, the whole place "died with him" and has been abandoned ever since. the disco itself is still in pretty good shape (some inside pics of it later), but the pizzeria (the place where the games are were ;) is in the condition you've seen on the previous pictures!

here's a photo of the entire building (still looking nice from the outside)

the disco section

nice oriental-style entrance

the old bus stop for the disco still exists ...

... so let's stop our "bus" right here!

once again, i am being accompanied by my best friend charlotte - my offical roadtrip photographer! let's get back into the bus ...

... and cruise around the building ...

... to the rear entrance ...

... where the new owner (the brother of the late disco owner) and his son are already waiting for us!

let's not waste any time and start with the "easy" cabinets - the ones which are located on the ground floor. first up: galaxy ranger!

first game out!!! btw, this is not a game i'm going to keep for myself, i'm bringing this along for my austrian arcade-buddy alex (after all, his name is hidden in the title: gALAXy ranger :P)

a quick inspection to take out any loose parts and see if everything's secured

ok, let's load it up!

we quickly realize that the game is too high to stand up inside the van because of the way we have loaded it ...

... therefore we have to put it on its back again (for now)!

next in line: galaxian (another "alex game")

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5229/5676583954_30302ec558_t_d.jpg) click on the following picture to watch us load galaxian into the van

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8455/7963364340_590a2311d7_b_d.jpg) (http://youtu.be/IAT8vxYqclo)

two down - three to go!

transporting those heavy old games doesn't come without a price - the owner suffers a "severe" leg injury!

that was the easy part - the fun is about to start on the staircase of doom

to be continued ...

LOL ! That reminds me of the Eurocade crew loading the LL and Berzerk the wrong way around EXAXTLY like that.....once I had the Berzerk back on the lift I watched and KNEW that it _should_ fit inside....and the way to do it is first push it forward and then turning it in....there is a risk for the lower front area when doing this of course....but we did the LL laying down on getting it to Eurocade. We had to drive three times from my home, back we did it in just two runs ;)

hehe, they took what was left there (apart from the universal cabs). i saw that stargate as well when i was there the second time around, the owner told me he had found another cab hidden somewhere in the back. this is me having a first look at the game from afar

the cab had been stored upside down, had nothing inside apart from the power supply (if i remember correctly) and was in really bad shape. because of that (and because of the fact that our van was already full), i decided NOT to get it and didn't regret it. the owner told me that some guys from france would come up soon to get the rest of the games, which means everything in there has been saved!!!

let's return to superully's roadtrip into the wild ...

before we continue with the cabs, let's inspect the staircase of doom a little bit closer. here are the photos from my first visit again!

you remember that the lower section of the stairs had already collapsed ...

... so in order to bridge the gap we installed a pallet! it can easily carry one person, but will it support the weight of three people carrying a 100+ kilogram arcade cabinet?

if it doesn't, we'll simply fall down into the cellar underneath! :o  :o  :o

there's only one way to find out: TEST IT!!! the first game we're going to bring down from upstairs is a "secret fan favorite": space zap!

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5229/5676583954_30302ec558_t_d.jpg) click on the following picture to watch us carry it down the staircase of doom

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8182/7963368398_d72ee73e9d_b_d.jpg) (http://youtu.be/ojM0Mh61RbQ)

a piece of cake - or not! first game down, so let's get it out into the open

check out that mirrow on the top of the cab!

fits in nicely!!!

note the additional door that we "installed" to get the games into the van more easily! ;)

after loading the space zap, we realize that we won't be able to get the remaining games into the van the way we had planned it, therefore we have to stand up the galaxy ranger!

up next: midway's space encounters - a game with fantastic stroboscope effects! if you've never seen it in action, you should check it out here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4cEQF724A)!

sorry for the somewhat blurry pictures, but the lighting conditions were getting worse and charlotte decided against using a flash for this one, but i'm sure you get the picture of what's happening ;)

man, that was quite difficult and exhausting!

out it goes

that game is in below-average condition, but it had to be saved! 8)

one final return to the staircase of doom! we've saved the best (and the heaviest / bulkiest) for last - can you already guess the game?

fortunately, i'll never have to walk those stairs again, but i'll forever have "fond memories" of them because of those videos that charlotte shot!

we're using the same technique we've used for the space encounters to get the cabinet out of the wild into the open!

nope, that's not a tear of joy in the corner of my eye, that's PURE SWEAT!!! i've never been that sweaty and dirty in my whole life!!!

as you might know, i already have a battlezone in my collection, BUT it is in much worse condition than this one (bad sideart, broken corners, rusty control panel - the usual suspects). my idea is to keep the new one and convert the old cabinet into a red baron (if i manage to source the parts). repro artwork is going to be available soon, the problem will be to find a boardset AND an open face kit to complete the conversion. but i'm in no hurry - time is on my side!

speaking of which: time to load the final game into the van!

because of the condition the cabinet is in, it's getting some extra protection!

c'mon - push!!!

just a few more centimeters ...

and we're done - literally!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

to celebrate the occasion, charlotte shot a short VERTICAL VIDEO for all those vertical video lovers out there! :-*

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5229/5676583954_30302ec558_t_d.jpg) click on the following picture to watch it!

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8313/7963406742_7985ce46b3_b_d.jpg) (http://youtu.be/zrNa2H9jttE)

well, i've said above "we're done" - i lied!!! there's one final mission we have to complete - something else i need to get from that place!!! for that, we have to walk through the disco ...

... which you can still rent for private parties ...

... into another storage area which consists of two rooms: a small anteroom ...

... loaded with tons of musical equipment (and other crap) ...

... and a much larger second room also loaded with countless stuff ...

... where parts of the roof have already collapsed (see the giant beam in the background?)

can you already guess what i'm here for? i'm sure you can! there's one thing that totally stands out in those pictures - and that's those original totally 70s orange lamps hanging from the ceiling!

unfortunately, the ladder we have at our disposal is only long enough to get a few of them down ...

.. but isn't that a nice "bouquet of lamps" i've picked (i got six in total)? i'm so happy with them, it's the icing on the (roadtrip) cake for me! i might go back to get a few more - having them hang down in a future gameroom between the rows of games would certainly look amazing!!!

with this catch in hands, i walk off into the sunset!!!

thx for all the cool comments, guys, it really was a hell of an adventure!

But seriously, you really should wear some decent shoes for such a job!! ;)

those ARE decent shoes for me! ;) honestly, i feel like my feet are made for those shoes, i even go hiking with them! i know, seeing the hi-tech safety shoes the other guys wore made me feel somewhat "underdressed", but i'm no fan of closed shoes. in fact, i go barefoot whenever i can. if i were allowed to go to school barefoot, i would do so! :) the good thing is: nothing's happened so far (knock on wood) ...

isn't it just great when you can quote yourself? ;)

as you might know, i already have a battlezone in my collection, BUT it is in much worse condition than this one (bad sideart, broken corners, rusty control panel - the usual suspects). my idea is to keep the new one and convert the old cabinet into a red baron (if i manage to source the parts). repro artwork is going to be available soon, the problem will be to find a boardset AND an open face kit to complete the conversion. but i'm in no hurry - time is on my side!

Title: Re: [Superully's Roadtrip] Into the Wild
Post by: Superully on September 10, 2012, 05:51:51 PM

to quote a popular american arcade guy: "OMGWTFBBQ"!!! believe it or not, i found another "nest of games" today!!! and believe it or not, here's what i saw first upon entering

can you believe it, another midway's space encounters - and this one is in so much nicer condition (almost no rust) than the one i already have PLUS it is complete. in all my years of collecting i had never seen a space encounters "live" - and now there's two!!!

anyway, there was also another interesting game in really good condition (apart from being dirty): blasteroids! while it is / was not at the top of my wanted list, it's a nice fun game to have. we plugged it in, monitor came on, we dropped in a coin and played a round. the game is fully working!!!

originally, i just wanted to go there to check out the place and see if i could find some hidden gems there, but when i asked the owner how much he wants to have for the games, he said he'll make me a good price if i take both of them. well, the price was too good to let go: i paid 80 euros - FOR BOTH GAMES!!! :)

i will most likely part out the first space encounters from the abandoned pizzeria and either scrap the cab or give it away to someone who wants it ...

there's also a universal galaxy wars up for grabs, but i'm not interested in it! anyone else maybe?

finally, he also has a couple of pinballs for sale! he already sold the following: Bally Kiss, Bally Embryon and Williams Lasercue. stills available is another Williams Lasercue, Williams Timewarp (two of them), Williams Trizone, Williams Flash and Gottlieb's Cleopatra. in case your interested, drop me a pm!!! however, i can already tell you they won't go as cheap as the videogames, the ones he sold ranged from 250 - 750 euros - don't know if that is a good price or not.

btw, the owner told me he had another videogame which he sold for 50 euros a few days before i went there: a mario-style game, he said. OMGWTFBBQ - hope this wasn't a donkey kong i missed out on ...  :-\

A Kiss Pinbal is worth thousands depending on condition.....I was stupid enough the miss the one that was at the Belgian warehouse...not that I would want to keep it but I could have made some money for a change ;)

How do you find these places, would love to find one here.....even if I wouldn't get a single game from it...just for fun ;)

sorry toralf, didn't want to steal this from you. was it on your "most wanted" list?

yesterday i went to the second location again to pick up my dirt-cheap cabs and i also took some (unmotivated) photos of the pinballs still available. so for all the pinballs lovers out there, here you go

i also had to check out the universal gALAXy wars for my austrian arcade-buddy alex! apart from being damn dirty on the outside, the cab is in great condition ...

... and unhacked und really clean on the inside!

the only downside is what you get on the screen once you turn it on! but honestly, 50 bucks is still a great price for it - working or not!!!

oh, as an added bonus i also got the following boxed NOS commodore 1901 monitor FOR FREE!!! it was already sitting on the pile of debris outside which was ready to go to the dumpster, i spotted it, asked about it and the owner told me i could have it if i wanted to, because it would be thrown away otherwise!!!

question to the experts: is that as good a test monitor as the 1084 is? i've read it was produced expecially for the commodore 128 and there aren't that many of them around anymore ...

Stupid Commodore, there is a 1901 which is monochrome and a 1901 which is color....mmmmmm ;)

Anyway, it says here it can do RGB so it should be fine as test monitor. Just need to know the pin outs...

Pfff, nobody seems to actually know, I googled and didn't diff a clear answer...

Let's say there are easier monitors that we know will work as test monitor....and they are dirt cheap...

yesterday i found the time to inspect the second space encounters i brought home - as i've said, this one is in so much nicer condition than the first one, i'd even call that an outstanding condition!

in fact, it looks almost mint (and that's a word i rarely use when it comes to old arcade cabinets)!

it IS dirty though and one the plexi inside has fallen off, but that's only a matter of taping it back on

however, i have no idea about how the game looks on the inside (e.g. if it has been hacked or if parts are missing), because the game came without keys. there are three locks on the cabinet: one on the coin door and two more on the lower / upper back door. i took a gamble and drilled open the lower back door lock first - here's a first glance inside after probably 30 years of not having been opened

as you can see, it is extremely clean and it seems to be unhacked / complete. also on the bottom of the cab, a complete set of manuals along with all the schematics ...

... and a small mystery bag! ???

never seen anything like that inside a cabinet, so i'm anxiously opening it up to find the following: a NOS set of leg levelers and their corresponding nuts :P

a look at the back of the coin door from inside - i'm sure you'll quickly notice ...

... the set of keys dangling from the coin door hook! fortunately, they open the other two undrilled locks!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

with the keys for the coin door found, i can unlock it to remove the lid of the coin box - only to gind this inside: MONEY MONEY MONEY!!! :)

all in all, i'm dancing in joy because of the condition the cabinet is in and because of all the goodies i've found - and the price i paid for it was unbeatable 8)
