Title: Good offer on soldering station
Post by: level42 on July 22, 2010, 10:21:05 PM
RS has this soldering station on offer right now:

http://nl.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=6654789&cm_mmc=Email-nl-_-juli-2010-_-General-actie290610-_-Last%20Minute

Great price for a good quality station.

Almost the same as my Ersa (except for the iron itself).

I would like to buy this solder station, and some leaded solder tin to go with it. Which diameter solder tin should I get for soldering on pcb's. The link André gave is for 0.71 mm thick solder tin wire. Is that not too thick?

It's a bit of a personal preference. I usually like the thinnest possible. I didn't look very well, just saw the link on the regular mailing I get from them.

I'll have a look tomorrow to see what diameter I currently use. I will let you know tomorrow morning.

Note that the offer is for ONE day only....

Here's a web-version of the mailing I got, there's more interesting soldering stuff on offer.

http://online.rs-components.com/interface/external_view_email.php?A870744475682061338886382024

I esp. advice the "desoldeerlint". I used to use a hand tin-sucker, but I switched to this stuff because it works much easier and cleaner IMHO.

good price indeed!
thickness is really a personal preference, i like for pcb's like andre the thinnest as possible, but for normal wire connectons i like more thick because otherwhise you are feeding one meter of tin for every wire  :D

Exactly, but since I do only occasional wire connections I'll take that small disadvantage against the IMHO bigger disadvantages of thicker solder on PCB's.
The thinner the solder, the easier it mets and flows. But indeed, it's personal preference....

I just registered there. Great online shop (RS = Radio Shack?). And no shipping costs if you buy online. Do remember that all prices are excluding VAT. No problem if you have a business, like me, but else you could be in for a little surprise.

RS = Radio Spares. They've been around a while :)

For people who don't have the offer in their country, if I remember correctly Farnell (same type of global outfit) sell Duratool stations in the same price range.

At least here in Germany you need to have a business to order at RS Online, is that so in other countries as well??
And prices are without tax.

I just checked my solder tin and it is also 0.7 just like the stuff offered by RS. For me it's the ideal size to work with.

You do need a chamber of commerce number here.

Officially.................................

It's unbelievable, I just ordered 2x 74 series IC's for the total sum of 0.86 Euro incl. tax. I would guess sending the bill (which they do separately) and sending the stuff would cost at least a couple euros but they don't have minimum order amount (except for some items, always indicated )and (in Holland) no shipping costs when ordering online.

The materials are shipped from Germany (by GLS) or England (by DHL, I hate that, they don't drop of items at neighbors, or even if the envelope fits in your mailbox they still want you to sign for such very small stuff....).

The smaller "brother" of the first station is now on offer with RS HOLLAND:

http://nl.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=0186719

Note this is excl. VAT (19%).

In Germany it costs a bit more:

now all i need is a desoldering station  ;)

Somehow that looks familiar ;)

I don't have a desoldering station, you only need it if you're going to do a shit-load of desoldering....
Title: Re: Good offer on soldering station
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on August 09, 2010, 09:03:56 AM
thats true, wick and a handpump will do fine if you do need to desolder only sometimes

but since i have it , i get used to it, and sometimes it makes your job easier

by the way, my heater element gave up on me last week, and luckily i managed to fix it with some wires and shrinking tube instead of replacing it......
the price of "number 6" did not make me happy  :o (http://www.etool.ca/RENDER/1/71/380/11178.html)

I'm thinking of getting a soldering station also. The RS DS50 which André 'advertised' above is  only € 50,90 excl. VAT. Is this one good enough for occasional use for soldering on electronic boards, or should I get one like Ully did, which costs at RS  € 135 excl. VAT. And I suppose that I have to buy an extra soldering tip when I get the Ersa because that one comes with a 2,2 mm tip (way too big for PCB soldering).

I don't want to spend too much money on this, but I also don't want to buy a cat in the bag.

good point, erik, thx for mentioning that because i forgot to ask: which soldering tip sizes do you guys recommend?
Title: Re: Good offer on soldering station
Post by: flip971 on August 09, 2010, 12:34:26 PM
You can use 1,5mm or 1,00mm for "classic" pcb. For particular pcb (computer pcb) 0,80/0,60mm are preferible.

Ully: do a search on e-bay for tips, there's a guy in the UK who sells them very cheap (I bought some from him, don't remember exact sizes).

Erik: I think it will be fine.

are those "restricted" to our ersa station because a search on ebay uk with "soldering tips" brings up a looooooot of results :-\

Yep. Check the ERSA site for a number of compatible tips and then search for those numbers

Erik: I think it will be fine.

Thanks, I just ordered it, together with a role of leaded solder tin and two extra tips (a spare 0.8 and a 1.6). No shipping costs! That's great.

Yup esp. if you order 2 IC's for 0.86 Euro ;)

Got this delivered this morning:

I noticed that the extra ordered 0.8 mm tip was also in the package, but the 1.6 mm wasn't. I called customer service of RS and they told me that the 1.6 mm tip is coming from the UK and that I will get it probably by mail today or tomorrow. Great Service. I can't understand how they do this without charging any shipping costs (sure I know, the costs are incorporated in the item sales prices), and still have good prices.

Another strange thing, the box was delivered from RS Germany, then why is the soldering station more expensive if you buy it over RS Germany?

Edit: DHL Express just delivered the 1.6 mm tip. :D RS stole my hearth and I sure will order more often from them. They have great stuff.

Yup some stuff comes from Germany (most things I've ordered so far). The German stuff is delivered through GLS which is great because they often deliver stuff to my neighbors when I'm not home. Thats' fine with me we have a great neighborhood and we receive packages from eachother regularly.

However the UK stuff is shipped with DHL. Now that's fine if you are either always at home OR you can have them deliver at your workplace, but since I don't have a fixed workplace and am not often at home at weekdays, this really sucks.
The thing is they demand a signature for EVERYTHING, even a tiny bag that EASILY fits through the mail inlet (how do you call that, we have a inlet in our door for regular mail, not a separate mailbox).
SO, then I have to go over to their warehouse which is a 30 km drive roundtrip. I hate that.

But that's the only bad thing about RS for me so far. They're great in every other way.

I guess these guys have a huge bulk contract with these shipping companies so it doesn't really matter how much they send.

RS ship from France also sometimes (in old-school "radio spares" boxes), I've had deliveries from them come over 3 different couriers on the same day. Sometimes from the same depot.

I prefer to order from Farnell most of the time, they also ship next day for free and from multiple locations but it's all done via UPS so it gets consolidated before reaching you. Also the UPS people are actually friendly, as opposed to the GLS people who obviously hate their job :)

Price wise, they each have their better prices on individual items but in general it averages out. Farnell tend to have more stock on obscure parts.

Mouser is cool too, they have lots of parts you can't get locally. They ship from the US and pay all customs/brokerage fees but there's a minimum amount of €75 to get free shipping.

Indeed, you need to have a Farnell account.
