During the crazy uk road trip with ckong i took a second cab back to the Netherlands. It's a mario bros widebody that was owned by chris but since he needed some space he sold it to my brother, thanks again for that! ;D The machine needs a new cap kit, new side art, t-molding and cpo, and there are a lot of holes to be filled and broken wood to be fixed.
So right after i got home from being 3 days on the road my brother and i fully striped the cab.

We cut the damaged piece of wood off and replaced it with this
(http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7391/img20111220wa0002.jpg)
After some filling, sanding and a first layer of paint it looks (kinda) like new
(http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/6461/imag4740.jpg)
The rest of the holes are also filled and sanded down.
And the first layer of paint is applied, but only on the fixed pieces.

nice to follow a new restoration thread, i'm sure you'll be finished with your MB WB resto before mine even starts :P.
do you still need those color codes, pieter? (sorry, totally forgot about them)
-
No thanks, we got a pretty good match, the next layer of paint will be applied tomorrow..
-
are you rolling or spraying?
-
The Pieter Bros Restoration!
Way to go guys, I'm so glad you're giving it the second youth it deserves + now I can move a little bit easily in the gameroom ;)
-
are you rolling or spraying?
Rolling, my brother thinks he'll get a pretty good result, i'm just hoping he's right. ;)
If it doesn't workout we might go with your vinyl idea.
-
Looks like the kitchen is again transformed into constructing area ;D
nice start !
-
hahaha, yes it is! My house is now taken over by arcade machines, there also one in the living room and one in the hallway, my girlfriend is very happy with this hobby. ::) ;)

I see why you need an orange button
looks nice the Mario Bros cab, art on the bezel rocks. Someone should make a book about arcade (side)-art
-
Yeah good work! The cab deserves a good treatment! I love those Nintendo Cabs! And you also have a red tent! Someday when I'm grown up I will own one, too :D
Anyway: can't wait to see the final results.
-
Yeah and that red tent was NOS :) (well about)
The story is they were bought by Stena line, a ferry operator between The Netherlands and the UK but they were never put in service because they weren't up to UK/Dutch (or both) electricity safety standards....
I've seen the lot of them for sale, about 9 or so of them, but I was "just" starting in the hobby and didn't judge their value right at that moment......sigh...
Within some days my kitchen will be turning into a workplace again too.....it's Ms.Pac's turn for some more bondoing and sanding.... ;D
-
Yesterday we applied the first real layer of paint. It looks pretty good on first sight but there's a lot of dust that isn't visible on the picture. We will try to polish it out, otherwise will will sand it again and try a second time but in a room with less dust.

i know the dust problem!!! had so much trouble with my jungle king. i'd love to have a paint booth eventually which sucks out all "unwanted guests" and provides a clean environment, but that's still a long way off ...
-
Yes, it sucks! My brother thinks he can polish it out, do you have experience with that?
-
Fantastic work. Use some 0000 wire wool to polish out.
-
Yes, it sucks! My brother thinks he can polish it out, do you have experience with that?
i have tried polishing it out, but then surface gets pretty dull. don't know whether you have to treat it with some kind of wax afterwards to get it shiny again, i'm no expert when it comes to paint jobs!
-
We know a guy who used to polish cars for a living and he's going to take a look at it. I really hope we can get the dust and other shit out, because the painting (just one thick layer, applied with professional rollers) went surprisingly well. Here another picture:
-
from the pictures it looks fantastic! when the guy comes over and manages to get everything out leaving a flat glossy surface behind, please let us know exactly how he did it ...
-
A friend of mine told me to drop a lot of water on the ground in order to prevent dust deposit on the fresh paint, but I suppose it's easier to do in a warehouse than in your room? ;D
-
Hahaha, yes it is! Got a wooden floor, so that's not going to work.
-
Just painted the other side. Let's hope it will be a bit better then the first, the kitchens is supposed to be dust free atm (if that's possible).
Fingers crossed! ;)
-
looks like ice!!!
-
How did the cap testing work out ?
Looks great now, to prevent dust, hang cab on ceiling, paint underneath ;););)
-
looks like ice!!!
Hahaha, yes, wet paint, i'll post another picture when it's dry.. ;)
About the other (dusty) side: we let the polishing guy take a look and he told us that the dust is already in the paint/varnish so impossible to get out. >:(
-

Didn't try, sorry, maybe tonight or otherwise this week.
-

eh, doesn't stuff have to be dry in order to polish something out?
-
Yes, i was talking about the other side we did last week..
-
A few hours later.....
-
There can only be one conclusion: you need a better camera..... ;D
Looks great though.....
-
yes, these are all phone pictures. The problem is you can feel the dust by hand or if you take a closer look.
This side is better then the first, but if you want to reach superully quality i suggest you try another method like vinyl or spry painting the cabinet. My brother is a bit less anal ;), and i must admit it looks pretty good.
-

eh, superully paint quality? my paint jobs are far from perfect (see jungle king). i've talked to scr33n and his products seem to come out much better than mine. however, judging from his pics, his apartment also seems to be much cleaner than mine :P. my cats really lose lots of hair and my cleaning skills (and my willingness to clean) are probably below zero. i hate every kind of housework!
-
Listen, when you are working on something you see EVERYTHING. Once finished, in use, you dont even see all those tiny things anymore. One question/remark. Would painting it while upright have gained less dust on the surface ?Of course its a lot easier to roll when its laying down.....
-
Roll "lying down" dry Upright ;D
-
hey pieter, i'm sure your brother wants to have this machine to be in perfect shape, so how about a new roll of true flat t-molding? it's on sale right now for 20 bucks a roll. i'll be ordering soon, so now's your chance to jump on board ...
-
Thanks, but Ronald Reagan gave me his spare set.
-
We finished painting the cab today by applying the black colour on the front
(http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/9103/imag4817.jpg)
Next up:
Install the flat t-molding
Applying new side art from phoenix arcade
clean the control panel and install new the cpo & 1 button
Fix the monitor
-
Looks smoooooth!
No dust problem this time?
-
a little less but we decided to stop worrying/bitching about it. ;D ;)
-
that looks sharp!
btw, love your new avatar :-*
-
Thanks, i rearranged my game room a few weeks ago, its now less cramped with cabs and there is still place for a cabaret/mini in the future.
(http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/954/imag4763.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/851/imag4763.jpg/)
-
that is a really nice selection of games you have there - true classics all the way (well, some might argue about moon patrol ...)!
-
looks shine new! - how many games can fit in your gameroom?
-
that is a really nice selection of games you have there - true classics all the way (well, some might argue about moon patrol ...)!
?? - Moon Patrol is a classic... PERIOD!
-
if i rearranged everything again i got space for 2 more, otherwise there is room for one small cab across the donkey kong.
But i don't intent to buy anything new soon, i'm pretty happy with the selection i got right now and there's still lot's of work to be done.
-
I think its also less dust since its in an upright position.
Looks great Pieter !
-
Nice gameroom :-* :-* :-* congratulations!!!
I love this kind of pics:

And the t-molding is installed

-
Looks good !
thats the real flat tmoulding that did not fit in ronald regan's cab right ?
did you already test and made a list of caps to replace on the chassis ?
-
Yes, it's his old t-molding, thanks again mr president. :spaceace:
Nope, i hope to check them this weekend. I noticed some connectors are missing and the wires are soldered directly to the chassis, so maybe it has been worked on before?
-
Could be, who knows :D
-
The side art from Phoenix Arcade arrived, and as always it looks very nice.
:spaceace: :spaceace:
-
good choice with the phoenixarcade sideart, pieter. although damn expensive, it was the right choice!
-
You are right, it took a bit of energy to convince by brother but in the end he's really happy with it. I think this cab is going to turn out really nice, it's a good thing he lives about 10 minutes from my place so i'll be able to play it whenever i want. ;D
-
MB is a highly underrated game !!!
And its most fun while playing 2 player but you need someone who can play a bit. :)
-
Yesterday my brother and a friend picked up the freshly painted cab and brought it to his new home..
-
The cabinet is at his new location and one of the sides got new art.
-
Did you do the cap testing yet ? May need the tester coming week....
-
Nope sorry, that's the most difficult part for me but i'll take care of it tomorrow.
-
Today, we finally took a look at the monitor and measured the caps. Andre was so kind to lend us this little magical tool (if you need it this week just say so, i'll drop it off at your place).
And my ipad with a Sanyo cab map also came in very handy.
Because there a lot's of connectors soldered directly to the chassis, we decided to take the easy road (as always) and just remove the chassis enough to be workable. I emailed the results to Andre, who's going to take a look and tell me which caps need replacement, thanks for that! :D
(http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u471/Gyruss99/IMAG4841.jpg)
-
No e-mail yet ?
-
Howmany solderwork do i have andre ? ;D
-
OK gonna check the list in a bit but wanted to let you know that I happen to have a 20EZ Deluxe + audio board cap kit from Bob Roberts right here....let me know if you want it.
-
if pieter is not interested in it and you're willing to sell it to the german dude, i might go for it!
-
Yes, of course i want it, thanks!!
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
OK, checked it with the table from here: http://www.radiodevices.info/esr/esr4_en.pdf
I left out all the caps that are OK:
C406 => REPLACE
C408 => DESOLDER it and check it again out of circuit. Same values ? Replace ! If good values, there's a short over the Capacitor somewhere else in the circuit !!
C410 => DOUBLE VALUES ?? I don't understand...
C411 => probably bad but...desolder and measure again.
C467 => REPLACE
C472 => REPLACE
C609 => REPLACE
C610 => REPLACE
SOUND BOARD:
C372 => REPLACE
C374 => REPLACE
C375 => REPLACE
C378 => OK but that C value (C357.1) indicates it's in parallel with a much bigger cap or something went wrong, desolder and check again
TR373 and 374 can't be tested with this device, these are transistors.
Jeez I had some problems focussing between all those numbers !!! Anesthetics are coming out....
-
Okay, that are a lot of bad caps!
About the C410, there are 2 pluses and minuses, we measured the one mentioned on the cap map, maybe this picture makes things clearer:
And of course thanks a lot for your work!
-
Huh ? How does that look on the parts side ? Is it a really big one ?
-
Yes, it's a big one. But on the bob roberts cab map they show were the minus is located, so we measured that one first. Hope you understand my gibberish!
-

If you look good, you see that only 2 holes have a lead in it ;)
the left and right to be specific..
the top and bottom are just closed holes..
-
Ah, sounds very logical, thanks!
-
Pfff see......anesthetics still have the better part of me....
So, measure across where the pins of the cap are... ;D
-
Yeah, caps with 4 legs are quite rare. ;D
-
To me nothing is rare or weird when it comes to electronics ;D
-

Dont worry, i needed to put these glasses on also ;D

I like that Taito Station sign! :spaceace:
Looking great! Seems I've somehow wound up working on more of those Sanyo/Sharp monitors than any other type. I "remove" the chassis the exact same way :D
They sure look good when they're done though!
-
Shame on me, I just read this topic tonight for the first time. And why? Because I will post the CPO to Gyruss' brother tomorrow (which took much too long for me to do  ) and I wanted to know how the resto is going.
But very nice job, guys. I'v seen the cab in its pretty beaten up condition, and it looks completely different now.
About the 'troublesome' paintjob. what I did with my DK cab is that I rolled a very thin layer, then sanded it with very smooth wtaerproof sanding paper and rolled a second very thin layer of paint on it. I did however put the cab upright after each paintjob, so dust has less chance to get stuck. And the end result was a very smooth dustfree paintjob. I know, this 'advice' is a bit late. again.
By the way, wo did the cap replacement job?
-
Hahaha, no problem at all, now that the cpo is on it's way the restoration will be finished before the weekend. Yesterday we installed the second piece of side art.. Looks great!
Because Etienne was kinda busy with the stickers and because he helped me a lot in the past year (thanks again mate), we decided to look for someone else to do the cap kit, and i got to say the guy did a great job.
I didn't know the game was that much fun, we held a little tournament yesterday with 3 other guys and everybody enjoyed the game very much.
-

I was already thinking, when will gyruss contact me to cap this monitor...
i would have done it for you with pleasure even if i was busy :)
(in fact, i am always busy :D)
ps, is the marquee light working ? ;)
-
yes, i know but i was feeling a bit bezwaard to ask you all the time ;)
Hahahah, jep it's working, very strange because the starter didn't work in the galaga..
-
Dont feel encumbered, i will tell you when i dont want to do something ;)
Cool that the starter is working in that cab, now everybody is happy..
-
Hahahah, jep it's working, very strange because the starter didn't work in the galaga..
A starter with taste !!
-
that looks really really nice, pieter, glad that you got it and restored it so wonderfully!
have you tried getting that X off the bezel?
-
nope, but we will try robin's method in the future together with my donkey Kong bezel.
-
Great stuff Pieter!
And yes, MB is a fantastic game.
-
have you tried getting that X off the bezel?
What´s the point in that i often ask myself.... the people responsible for this should be KICKED! VANDALS!
Great outcome Pieter!, it really looks nice!!! - kicking myself for not jumping on the MBWB bulk deal..... :'(
-
Really nice, hope to try it out at Eurocade. ;)
-
It's alive, it's alive!
Good job guys!
-
CPO arrived today, thanks Erik!!
-
Huh, why apply it to a washing machine ?
LOL......oops sorry another lousy Friday afternoon joke.....I think I need a beer....
-
- i think you need at least a couple with a joke like that!!!!! ;D
-
my brother installed the cpo yesterday, here are some pictures:

-
it looks flawless - amazing job!
-
Thanks Ully!
There are still some things that has to be done:
1. We have to fabricate a new back-door.
2. Use Robin's method to get rid of the cross in the bezel.
3. The buttons need to be replaced, don't know if we'll wait on the replica's or install the one's from mike's arcade
4. Get new coin door locks...
5. When we turn the cab on there is a loud sound (like the coin sound in the bonus levels but a bit higher) that keeps on ringing until we put in credits. When we're out of credits the sound starts again. What could this be??
-
Looking brilliant !!
I personally would definitly wait for the repro buttons.
For now you MUST swap the plunger of the Player 1 Jump button with that of the 2p start button !!
Then both start buttons are original and done. If in nice shape I would keep them even when the repro's are available. Then you will only need one orange repro button.
-
Yes, i know, and also I've got a spare blue bottom from my dk that will be used until my brother makes up his mind.
What about the ringing sound problem? Do you happen to know what the issue can be?
-
Awesome job Gyruss!!! :spaceace:
-
The coin sound is normally produced when a credit is added (one "ping" per credit.)
Maybe your credit switch is hooked up the wrong way around and it constantly credits it ?
Check the credit switch ther should be one wire on the common and one on the NO (Normally Open) contact.
-
Really, really nice Pieter. ;)

Cool, i'll check that..
-
Looking great! ;D
-
Looks defenetly great!
untill now i see the coindoor is different than the other nintendo's..
is that a widebody thing ?
-
Yes think so..
My brother called me and the sound issue went away after putting the game into free play through the menu..
-
looks awesome! Nice fresh colors and characters.
-
Yes think so..
My brother called me and the sound issue went away after putting the game into free play through the menu..
Problem is you have to keep setting it to free play at every power up. I think the hi score save kit solves this.
-
Is that so? I'll pay my brother a visit tonight and check it out.
-
Okay, i'm at my brother atm and it turns out you're right, the problem is still there.
I checked the credit switch and that seems to be hooked up the right way, also when i disconnect the wires the sound is still there!
I made a little sound clip with my telephone: mario_bros.mp3 - 0.24MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/99380726c2d64190/)
We also switched the faulty orange button with one my spare blue one, looks a bit better.

-
some guy on KLOV (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=225777) is about to reproduce both the MB WB marquees and the bezels. he's even thinking about doing the "bubble marquee version" which i really really like a lot!
i'll have to check the art on my machine to see if i have to get replacements!
-
I like the bubble marque too, fits the cartoon theme very well.
-
Wasnt THE bubbel version only for upgrade kit for the "narrow" bodies?
I think Nintendo wanted to emphasize that the converted cabs were 2 player. The wide body more or less already suggests so...
-
Wasnt THE bubbel version only for upgrade kit for the "narrow" bodies?
nope, both versions existed for the widebody cabs, most of the "bubble marquees" were simply cut down version of the widebody marquee. have a look at the following picture: here's a full-size bubble marquee in a widebody cabinet!
if he decides to do the bubble marquees, i'm most likely going to get one!
