Title: Roadtrip to the Abandoned warehouse.

Yesterday I found a Double Dragon cab for sale not too far from Budapest in the nice historical city of Eger and because we planned some excursion and bathing for Sunday, it was a perfect reason to take a look at the sellers place .
Eger is 140 km. from Budapest and it has a beautiful old downtown and a Castle in the  middle of the city.
It became famous in the middle ages when the Defenders ;D of the castle could stop the Osman(turkish) empire to conquer our ancient country.
We started with my GF. around 9 in the morning

In Hungary there were heavy rains in the past 3 weeks, so 10 thousands of peoples had to leave their homes

The hungarian way to transport hay ;D

We hopped into the local plaza for breakfast and the first place we saw was an Arcade! ;D
(Star Wars Trilogy, House of the Dead 4, Sega Rally, Gunblade, Time Crisis)

We arrived at the seller's palce, it was a near collapsing old warehouse
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwFdb17zHI/AAAAAAAABCI/DFp6WhoNb7U/s800/K%C3%A9p%20040.jpg)

The first 2 cabs I saw was Turbo Outrun and Ikari Warriors in an opened part of the warehouse

Than the guy opened the door and the first thing I recognized  was some green insect on a sidepanel ;D
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwF9JOMuPI/AAAAAAAABCs/fgr3dpJNpDI/s800/K%C3%A9p%20050.jpg)

This pic is 18+, when I moved a cab to take a better look at the Galaxian, a mumificated bird was fallen to my head :o
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwGIr2X7gI/AAAAAAAABDA/5zjKORbwa4M/s800/K%C3%A9p%20054.jpg)

The ghosts looking around what else we could find here, than they realized that it was a Pole Position 2 with the bird mummy ;D
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwGURWlRiI/AAAAAAAABDE/XhwdKXDhPY8/s576/K%C3%A9p%20058.jpg)

OK, i see there is also a Vindicators 2 in the pic, but please be patient ;D
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwGd6ULFbI/AAAAAAAABDU/YyycM9rzSPY/s576/K%C3%A9p%20056.jpg)

Here it is
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwGrygJhHI/AAAAAAAABDk/118DKaoXFgE/s576/K%C3%A9p%20060.jpg)

We went out and took a look at the bigger opened warehouse, there were tons of different cabs and slot machines and I saw this:

I think it's a Dig Dug, but it was impossible to reach :-\

I tried to reach the dig dug from the other side, but I failed >:(
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwHAZytN5I/AAAAAAAABD8/qy9DEkiw5e0/s576/K%C3%A9p%20073.jpg)

Stepped on the Outrun to reach higher
(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwHKDADfMI/AAAAAAAABEI/IuJNcjmjSUM/s800/K%C3%A9p%20076.jpg)

Found the marquee of the Turbo Outrun(monitor missing, control panel terrible condition) it was very nice, I took it ;)

Found a Moon Alien 2 cocktail with a broken glass

Title: Re: Roadtrip to the Abandoned warehouse.

Found a lot of pcbs and parts, I took all of the boards(about 25)

The Double Dragon that I originally wanted to buy was also in terrible condition, no pcb, no wires, no power supply, front wooden panel is broken, control panel was curved and full of cigarette burns, so I decided to leave it there.
I had space for 3 cabs so I took the PP2 first(no pcb, wires missing from control panel)

Than came the Galaxian(no marquee, cpo, bezel not original, otherwise it's complete with pcb)

The third one is a Satan of Saturn(pcb missing), was one of my favourites
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwIvNct8ZI/AAAAAAAABFk/QYWVNkWkauM/s800/K%C3%A9p%20109.jpg)

There was also 2 bingo machines, could be very old
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwJCsTq6BI/AAAAAAAABF8/xa-zlV2NF2k/s800/K%C3%A9p%20124.jpg)

When we finished loading the van, we took a walk in the city around the castle
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwJhk8aXII/AAAAAAAABGg/1R6jxGTvK2o/s800/K%C3%A9p%20141.jpg)

Than we had time to visit the thermal bath in a very nice place in the middle of a forest near the city
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/TAwJ-qb23FI/AAAAAAAABG4/pRawo3x2DPU/s800/K%C3%A9p%20169.jpg)

Arrived home about 7, I was extremly tired, so I asked my girlfriend to unload the van alone ;D(just kidding) ;D

Title: Re: Roadtrip to the Abandoned warehouse.

So the Roadtrip was about 300 km. long and last about 10 hours.
The 3 cabs, the more or less 25 pcbs and the Outrun marquee was 70 eur! ;)
The guy told me, there is another warehouse in the same city with working and complete cabs, he will take a look at it next week and inform me about the news. ;D
I will make a list from the pcbs I bought, I think most of them are broken, but 90% original, so if anyone need them for parts send me pm.
I think the Pole Position 2 will be hard to restore, because a lot of wires and also the pcb is missing, so if anybody have parts for this cabinet, or can take a photo from his own from inside, don't hesitate to contact me. ;D
Btw. anybody knows, that PP1 and PP2 pcbs and wireings are compatible with each other?
That's it for today. ;)

Great the you where able to save the 3 cabs, but damn, the horror   :-[ :-\ :-[
Some nice games in there! - and it seemed like the Dig Dug had some heavy water damage on the top  :-\ :-\ :'(

Goodluck with the babies  ;)

Love the story....sad to see the condition of the cabs but you deserve  :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: for rescuing a Namco/Bertollini Galaxian cab !!!! I love that one more than the Bally/Midway version !
The PP2 is very nice too, hope you can find _working_ parts.
Satan of Saturn, never played that in the 80's but it looks like a nice one !

Great story, great catch, hope the other warehouse has some more great stuff !
Any  original (Ms.) Pac board in that lot ?

Oh, and you guys should really fire the current trainer of your national soccer team, he sucks. I know because he sucked when he was the trainer of my favorite Dutch team as well. His brother isn't really doing much better as a coach. They were great players, but as coaches, they didn't reach very much :D

wow, thx a lot for sharing this great story - nice pictures, great weather. it would have been depressing to do the same trip on a rainy day. but man, how can someone let cabs literally rot cabs away like that? why didn't you take the ikari warriors? although it looks pretty beat, this is one of the games i NEED to add to my collection. it has the wrong joysticks, but the rest is there. are you going there again to rescue it ;) ;) ;)? and that did dug needs to be freed from the warehouse as well!!!
have you had the chance to see every part of the warehouse or at least to peek into every corner? who knows what's buried underneath? and then the news of another warehouse - you must be thrilled!

congratulations on your three new babies, although they look damn old already ;). they're going to require a lot of work, but with enough patience you could make them shiny and new.

- saturn of saturn: never heard or played before
- galaxian: the namco version :o
- pole position 2: this will probably be the most difficult one to get up and running, pp boards are a pain in the a**

once again: congrats!!! and good luck with the other warehouse

btw, do you have a gameroom for your games? and what does your girlfriend think of your hobby? she seems to be very supportive ...

Yhaaaaaaa! Arcade Warehouse stories are the best  :-*

What a magic moment... you're entering the warehouse ... without knowing what's inside ... and ... what a surprise ... Namco's GALAXIAN  :o ! I'm officially jealous now! Congratulation  :)

Regarding this picture

What is the game behind the Pole Position? It looks like a mini-cabaret game (like some model of Gorf or Asteroids for example?)...

The Ikari looks not too bad according the pictures... this would need to be saved  ::)
I've never head about Satan Of Saturn... hey... it's an early shooter (a la "Pleiads') made by SNK in 1981. You give me the need to try it  :P

Regarding the Pole Position, you're right... the side art is very great  :) It reminds me the comic book "Michel Vaillant" :

Thanks for sharing this adventure with us  :-* Homepage of course  ;)

wow! great story with beautiful pictures. I love those old warehouse photo's with all kind of different cabs stashed up together. Must have been an awesome feeling when you entered that place. With knee high grass and dead birds haha. EPIC story
I would have gone for the Ikari Warriors myself but the 3 cabs you have taken with you are awesome too. Can you make a list of the CPO's and the PCB's you found?

I am curious about your next warehouse trip!!

Thanks guys, it was really a great day ;D
Andre:I didn't see any pacmans among the pcbs, but I will send a list today with pics. ;)
I don't know too much about football, I'm a fan of winter sports and F1, but I look after what we can do with this idiot coach! ;D
Ully:If I will have time and can steal a truck from my company, I will go back for the Ikari and for the bingo machines this week and I also have to try to free that Dig Dug, but I think a forklift is needed to unload the surrounding stuff, there was a huge casino machine that blocked the way. :(
My cabs are separated in 2 levels of my house at the moment, not really gamerooms but I have no other options atm.My girlfriend also like this games, especially pinballs and I can count on her anytime I need help.
This is her favourite, cause they were born in the same year(1978) ;D
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_-UA8BV99Des/S4Fld9OR1DI/AAAAAAAAAe4/K7_OvMuGiLs/s640/k%C3%A9p%20017.jpg)
Bruno:Yeah, it was a stunning moment to recognize the Galaxian ;D
The cab you saw in background is a Shinobi, but nothing was original in it(marquee, bezel, cpo replaced) and the sidepanels was painted to blue or something.Maybe the original sideart is under that painting.
I try to go back and save what I can, cause this place will be destroyed in a few weeks by a bulldozer. :o

but good job in rescuing the cabs that you took away with you, and i hope some of those 25 pcbs work somehow miraculously!!  :spaceace:

Hey,

Nice find!

Ok so here is my view on the machines there:

1. You must grab the Ikari Warriors - if the cabinet is too water damaged strip it on site and take all the parts.
2. Get to the DigDug - that's the USA version - it might be too damaged but it might be ok, at worst strip it for all parts
3. You didn't appear to take the Outrun pcb - only the marquee!! You need the pcb :D
4. The Vindicators II - this is a conversion kit for Gauntlet machines - this kit is VERY VERY VERY rare. Grab the cabinet or if in not good condition, take the kit

Maybe offer to spend a whole day clearing out the warehouse for the owner - putting the cabinets that are too damaged into a burn pile in the field, but at the same time you get all the parts and other cabinets for free?

Thoughts?

Oliver

I ones visit Eger (and the Castle). If I remember correctly it is somewhere near Tokay (wine)?
Very beautifull country and cheap too.

Anyways, great catch.

I try to take everything that could be load to a Ford Transit, I think I can get all the remaining stuff around the same price.
I was too idiot to take any tools with me last time, so I couldn't take any parts and there were a lot of cabs with a locked backdoor, I have to blast them open. ;D
The Dig Dug will be very, very hard to reach but I try to find out something. ;D
The Vindicators is fu...g heavy, I have to find a 3rd person to pick it up, but if I can't, I will take all the parts as you advised. ;)

Yeah it's not far from Tokaj, also famous from it's beautiful vineyards and tasty wines, especially the red ones.

That "Atomi" board is a Namco board, judging by the ROM stickers it might be Phozon.

The unknown "Snake" PCB  is a Centipede Bootleg board, just compare it to an original one: http://www.crazykong.com/pcbs/A%20-%20F/Centipede.pcb.html

Great work !!!

You do realize that you have a mission you are not aware of yet right ?

I mean you HAVE to scan that Namco-Bertolini Galaxian art to save it for the future !!!

About the Snake PCB: You do wonder where they got the Pokey's from on those bootleg boards !  :D Probably from Atari themselves :P
Just like the Atari labeled monitor in my Asterock :D

After a lot of comments and good advises I decided to return to the abandoned warehouse, to take the rest I left there last time.
It was the 2nd roadtrip to the same place, so I didn't want to open another topic. :D
Yesterday we took an afternoon off with Zita(gf) and made another excursion to the city of Eger.
We went directly to the Shack ;D
Our first mission was to reach the Dig Dug somehow, so we have to remove everything that blocked the way:

My bad feelings became reality, the back row of the games was under  a broken part of the roof, so the Wrestlewar and the Dig Dug was in terrible condition, backdoor totally destroyed, they also peeled off in my hands when I touched them. The Dig Dug's front side totally replaced, there were no original marquee, CPO, bezel, everything was ugly.
I took the pcb from the Dig Dug, Chase Hq and from the Quarterback, it was missing from Wrestlewar:

I took all the parts I could move from the Chase Hq and from the Double Dragon:
First we loaded Ully's Ikari Warriors:
Than came the Shinobi.I didn't plan to take this machine, but I took a closer look on it and I realized, that it's complete(only marquee replaced) and in good condition and I saw something of the original sideart under that ugly grey painting.
Then came the Vindicator 2, damn heavy :)

Ready to go.
On the way back we stopped at the seller's house for a bath and we had some cold drinks, we were like dead mans ;D
I phoned to my friend from the motorway and asked him to help me unload the cabs, cause we were totally out of energy.

The parts I could take:
Chase Hq's bezel, Steering wheel panel, monitor, complete set of the marquee.
Double Dragon marquee, monitor's paper artwork, control panel, pcb.
Dig Dug pcb and power supply.
Quarterback pcb and marquee and all of the metal parts of each marquee.

holy ravioli :o :o :o! you guys worked your asses off - unfortunately it didn't pay off for the dig dug. sad to see a classic game like this "die" :'( what also made me almost cry was that poor cute hedgehog:

hope he finds another nice cosy place to sleep! i love hedgehogs :-* :-* :-*

i'm incredibly thankful for rescuing that ikari warriors for me - i owe you one (or two or three ;))! the cabinet seems to be in a steady state. of course the colors have faded and the cabinet will probably need to be stripped down to bares bones, but i'm sure it was well worth the resuce. have you had the chance to peek inside? is everything there? can't wait to start looking for parts!

once again, thx a lot for taking on this strenuous adventure and for sharing it with us. incredible that there's another warehouse still waiting for your arrival!!! this is arcade heaven :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Since Hungary was still pretty much a Communist controlled country in the early 80's, I think there's relatively lot of arcade cabs from that period over there. Weren't there very strict rules about these kind of games over there at the time ?
Or maybe those games were imported later when they were "too old" for western european standards ?

I ask this because I've also seen the Russian arcade cabinets on the internet.

I'm just curious, not trying to imply anything.

You are right Andre, we had a huge quantity of arcade cabs, much more than in the surrounding non communist countries like Austria etc..
Somehow it was out of the interest of the government and a lot of cabs could be imported to Hungary. I've heard that all the Zaccaria Pinballs and Arcade machines was a part of business between the  italian and our government.Your other idea could be also right, when the Berlin wall was destroyed, much more cabs arrived to our country. :D

I just returned from holiday this evening and decided to catch up on a few forums, didn't really check them for almost two weeks. and then I read this topic.   Wow, Belike, what a great find, and what a great story, the best one so far this year. It must have been an awesome feeling walking around there and trying to identify the cabs, you will remember days like this forever. I can't wait for the second warehouse.

Warehouse raid round 3 ;D

After a lot of cancellation, I had the chance to check what is hidden in the second warehouse in Eger.
The stuff was separated in 2 places, in Eger and in a nearby small village.
I got some pics earlier, so I didn't except to find too much treasures, there were mostly converted TV ideal cabs and pinballs.
The guy who was the owner of the first warehouse bought all the pinballs(real rare ones), so only a few arcade cabs left there.
At the first place I removed the pcbs, the monitor chassises and some speakers.

Than we moved to the other place, the following pics are especially for pinball lovers:
A Williams Phoenix from 1978:

Bally Kiss from 1979 (I've also seen the backglass):

Gun's and Roses (OMG.... :o)

And also a Space Invaders, Jurassic Park, etc., but they were in parts in a dark place, couldn't take pics.

I decided to take that strange Joust and a Tv ideal cabinet, it could be useful in the future for parts for Ully's Hyper Olympic:

On the way back there was a Galaga in an autobahnstazion, but we didn't have time for that ;D ;D ;D

Unloading the stuff:

All these cabinets were also tricky gambling machines, the owners didn't want to pay the taxes, so they supplied a remote controlled switchboard and they can switch between the arcade and the gambling pcb  from the desk or from the bar, when they got controlled from the police.
Joust from inside with the 2 kinds of pcbs:

This is a really strange cab, I'm sure that the painting is original, but the CP is Defender style, like Rav told us earlier and it has a metal backdoor.

And the TV Ideal cab, also with 2 pcbs:

We also took a mini poker cab for Zita, it was just 12 EUR. ;)

And the 3 babies together:

And I wanted to save the best for last, cause I removed all the pcbs I found there and 3 from 4 are working perfect:

Arc Area(original UPL, never heard of it)
Rtype (original Irem)
Street fighter II The World Warrior(bootleg with original Capcom manuals)
Moonwalker!!! :D(origianl Sega with a dead suicide battery)

I also took 3 monitor chassises and some speakers. ;)
So that's the story, another 300 kilometers, 3 cabs, 4 pcbs and parts. ;D
If anybody wants to turn that strange cabinet back to Joust or Defender please send me pm., if nobody, I will take it apart for spare parts.

I couldn't try the gambling pcbs, cause I've no idea how to switch between the boards without the remote controller, maybe there are some fun games among them. ;)
There was no cash dispense, it worked with a key.

It is really good when you have a nice operator experience like this. And the bonus of a working original R-Type pcb! That game is sooo much fun.

You have the 'arcade luck' my friend :-) A rare thing to have.

The modification is maded in Italy or by an Italian person  ;) ;) ;)

nice to hear that you finally got the chance to visit that second warehouse, unfortunately there weren't any wonderful surprises waiting for you. that joust cabinet is really strange: it seems to be not as deep as an original euro version, the control panel area looks as if a parts has been cut off and i notice some other differences as well. strange indeed! i would probably part it out and then trash the cab

were all those pinballs for sale? not that i'm interested, i'm just curious how much he was asking for the games!

oh, i forgot: that r-type pcb is of course a fabulous find - now all you need is the cabinet to go around it. well, i guess a lot of people are looking for one :P

That shiny Joust sidearts reminds me of a typical italian cab, many of them were made like this. Plus this metal backdoor rings a bell, we had something like that in the past. Maybe Super Galaxian, but I'm not quite sure, I'd need to go through some old photos...
Isn't there a manufacturer label somewhere attached to the cab?

That was the first thing I asked on arrival, but this guy is a pinball fan, so he don't want to let it go.
That jerk bought it for less than 100 eur and it's almost in perfect condition. :'(

I had the same idea to investigate it's origin, removed all the parts I could, checked every inch of the visible areas, but no sign of any manufacturers.
