...it's a game with a red car, movie style...

20th of September 2014, 6h00am... ready for a new adventure!

It's gonna be a light one?

We will see! Pre-flight checks...

400km to drive... mhhh... it's ok to my 'standards'  8)

Let's go! Mmmmmhhh, I love the smell of a road trip in the morning.  8)

...it's a game with a red car, movie style...like Dragon's Lair you know? ... but movie, not cartoon!

Funny, since I'm listening Arcade Outsider or Ten Pence Arcade, long trips do not bother me...  ;D

See! Already the sweet morning light...

The sun/wind turbine *combo* : 100 PTS, guys! ;D

After 'Outsiders', let's switch to '10 PENCE'  8)

Wow, really nice weather right here  :-*

...it's a game with a red car, movie style...like Dragon's Lair you know? ... but movie, not cartoon!
Yeah! Must be a laser disc game... what else could it be?! No! It's NOT Data East Road Blaster!

In addition of a road trip, why not adding a visit to the BGS exhibition?!  :)

Indeed!

Cool! That is a great road trip weapon!  :P :-*

...it's a game with a red car, movie style...like Dragon's Lair you know? ... but movie, not cartoon!
Yeah! Must be a laser disc game... what else could it be?! No! It's NOT Data East Road Blaster!
Wait! Memories I had on that game bring me back in the l8te seventies... no laser disc games at the time?!
I may have dreamed this game after all?

Well, Eyeshield 71 -the seller- and other members of the *famous* Burgundy French Arcade Savior Team are a part of this exhibition (see here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=5720.0)). So this was the perfect location for both of us  :)
So while I'm here, let's take a ride in this show...  8)

...yes, because we are in France, it's mostly the gamoover members land here :  ;)

I unfortunately don't have much time today... and I still need to take some rest, following the crazy 'Arcade Life Style' past week (UK FIREFOX road trip (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=5780.0) / Eurocade 2014 week end (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=5701.0))
So let's meet Eyeshield 71 & let's talk about the mysterious game with a red car, movie style!

...it's a game with a red car, movie style...like Dragon's Lair you know? ... but movie, not cartoon!
Yeah! Must be a laser disc game... what else could it be?! No! It's NOT Data East Road Blaster!
Wait! Memories I had on that game bring me back in the l8te seventies... no laser disc games at the time?!
I may have dreamed this game after all?

He eventually provide the answer! It's not a laser disc game... it's ... this ....

Holy shit! Yeah, it's a game using a projector / film reel!!!

When he mentioned that game on gamoover, I instantly recognized the game!

...it's a game with a red car, movie style!

He got it since almost two years, and he was ok to sell it to me because he didn't have any 'connection' with that one.

Loading time!

The seat is missing, but not a problem for me.

Now loaded in the car, with the help of my gamoover arcade friends  :-*

It's was really nice to all meet you, guys, but a damn too quick...really had to take the road as soon as possible...  :-\

The way back of this trip was a really nightmare! I kept falling asleep...  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

...and had to stop 3 times! dozed... ice creams... red bull... chips?! Damn, it was supposed to be a 'light' one?! Shut up! Too tired to respect it  :P  ;D

...but finally, the Belgium border...  :)

...and home!

Two countries : Belgium > France > Belgium, 11H37 "road trip" time and 800 km on the road.

Next step... unloading and 'discovering' the beast inside the Nuno's Lair!  8)

Priority number one...saving the 'video' footage!!!

Here's a video of that game working, see right here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLRKkzcWIpU).

Impressive, isn't it?  :P

Awesome !

I think i know who will do his best to save the footage  ;)  ::)

Once a caller from the UK on the Arcade outsiders mentioned this game (forgive me, i forgot which episode, it was an early one though)

After that i searched YouTube, and saw the video you link here, its really facinating with the projector

yeah finally some pictures ;D and some nice one . It was a pity that you could not stay more but with the hard week you got I can understand that it was hard time .
perhaps we will meet again at St Méneould Pinball fair .

The cab system is really great . I was really impressed when we switched it .

There is 2 set of game in the cab normally . I hope we did not forgot one at the warehouse .
Attract mode is made by a rotating disc . You should have 2 in the cab .
In case it is missing it will be the excuse to stop by your place next time i go to Holland  ;D .
We tried to repair it but we have too much to do so we had to let it go .
Take care of it.

Very weird game, Bruno, thanks for shring this one. What is the aim of the game? Chasing the Corvette?

And very nice pictures of this meeting. Is it an annual event? By the way, the guy driving the crazy taxi did have his side airbaig with him. Convenient.  :)

Thwocker : the owner of the Joust Pinball is the man who gave the Gorf cab to Ully.

Nuno : congratulations, a fine cab and a game of skills (like Space Zap for example, but with more pictures!).

Well, I got this one because I have a connection to it (I played it back in the days...and was always asking what was that game with a red car blabla...), and also because I really want to save the video footage, but this is clearly not my grail cab', or a 'must have' for me tbh.
I would like to see that beast working again, and to play it at least one more time. So we may talk about it l8ter, no problem.  ;)

I need to check also, it was one of the episodes in the beginning, i think somewherearound EP 7 orso.

not sure though, i need to re listen all of them  ;)

Not a big deal though, just some guy asking if they have heard of the game and if they think its worth restoring or something like that.

no deep info if thats what you are wondering about  :D

What's this part?  ???

The main 'attract mode' disc...

...see!  ;D

And a different one, used for an extra game/mission/circuit/whatever!

A NOS wheel in its original box  :-*

Funny, an 'usual' movie wheel is usually wound around a ...wheel, with a begin and an end... but not this one, see

...and there are punch holes on both side usually, no? Because on that one, there are holes on one side only? See on the right

...and at the left of it? What kind of information is? Sounds? Or 'data' for the game, like "you are supposed to turn left here?"  ???

An other box, with an other 'movie/mission'...cool!  8)

Looks like a brush for a electromotor, the round thing under it looks like som kind of coding wheel.

Post by: level42 on October 21, 2014, 10:09:19 PM
Yeah coding wheel could be but it also reminds me of the stroboscope discs you could use to check the speed of turntable.

There seems to be 16 and 24 on the disc.....sounds like film frame rates.

Bruno, that extra "track" on the side, is is the same material as the film or is it different material ?

Both could indeed be sound. Sound used to be put on the film in optical format.

That must be it, a stoboscope disc to adjust the projector speed.

I love old stuff like this..

Me too !

Looks like the format of the film is 16....with sound:

Now, is the sound magnetic or optical....put a part on a flat-bed scanner Bruno :D

waowww.... What a treasure you found. I'm interested in all kind of cinema techniques, and this cabinet join both of my interests : arcade games and analogic cinema !!

so yes, i think it is 16mm reel with its optical sound track.

If you plan to replace old projection system by a more classic video screen (which I hope won't be your final choice !!) you have several companies who use this kind of stuff :

These are digital scanners that allow to "digitize" 35 or 16mm film reels.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/fr/products/cintel
http://www.arri.com/archive_technologies/arriscan/

good luck for this project, I'm gonna follow this post very closely
 ;)

I have to disagree, although I can't be certain, but that looks more like it has magnetic sound than optical  ;D

But that's just MHO

Ok guys... it's time for a nice update!  Here's the story... 8)

To participate to the last Eurocade exhibition ( September 2014), I went to the Sound and Vision (‘Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid’) and during a visit of the several departments/offices in this building with Pieter aka Gyruss (employee at this place)... I've discovered what is the purpose of this organization, see

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (‘Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid’) is a cultural-historical organization of national interest. It collects, preserves and opens the audiovisual heritage for as many users as possible: media professionals, education, science and the general public. In addition, the institute develops and disseminates knowledge in the area of audiovisual archiving, digitization and media history.

...digitization...? ... wait a minute... I have something really special to preserve.... yes ... the wheel from the game of course! So I talked to Pieter about this stuff to preserve and he immediately agreed to help on this! How cool is that!!!  :-*  :)

So let's prepare the stuff for save.

I got with the game two different wheels, unused, still in there boxes. Note that I also have a third wheel, but that one is loaded/stuck inside the cabinet. I won't touch this third wheel for now, so let's take care of these two NOS wheels

...let's pack the stuff...

...and send it to Pieter @ the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision...

...arriving at destination :

...where Pieter followed all the technical steps to preserve this rare footage!

Done! ...and note that the wheels are no more in their cardboard boxes... They are now into something more appropriate :

...and...few weeks l8ter... I've received the precious...

THE package with all the original stuff, but also...an hard drive... that contains ultra high resolution captures of the two wheels!  :-* :-* :-*

I'm preparing the videos... stay tuned!  :)

Awesome work !!!!!

I was surprised that it's all French cars with French license plates.....thought it would be Japanese cars in Japan ;)

Also funny that sometimes there are two people in the red car and sometimes one....

And cool to see how the "drive aiming" worked with the black/white section. Pretty obvious how this worked :)

Now........there are still some Nintendo cabs with movie reels around that need to be saved for the future.......Andreas ??? :D

Fun quiz for old people here....name all the Renault models in this footage.

I'll give it a try.

The red car you chase is a Renault 9.

The first green car from the right is a Renault 12 break (station wagon)

The white and beige/brown cars are Renault 14

There is a white Renault 4 right after the turn around the motor police officer.

And then there's a white care with boot that doesn't look like a Renault but maybe a Peugeot just before the red car enters the village....

Now the interesting stuff.......the model 9 according to Wikipedia was only introduced in ..........1981....so....if that really IS a Renault 9 then that film was shot quite a bit after the game was made :) (and maybe Renault sponsored it ? ;))

I had never ever even heard about this incredible machine! What is the working principle? Is somehow like laser games where you give the right input at the right time, or something different?

Anyhow, Bruno, you have the peculiant ability to give to your roadtrips/findings something more, a different touch... not sure what it is, but keep this "thing" up!

Amazing how the whole stunt action looks "real". I could almost think not all the car were driven by stuntmen...

Glad to see you all seems to appreciate such stuff, it's cool  :)

Now the interesting stuff.......the model 9 according to Wikipedia was only introduced in ..........1981....so....if that really IS a Renault 9 then that film was shot quite a bit after the game was made :) (and maybe Renault sponsored it ? ;))

Yes, and it was also a surprise for me when I saw the footage for the very first time! I expected to follow a corvette or some 'red sport car' ?
What a surprise to see ...french cars on *I guess* french roads...  ;D

Before seeing back this cabinet, I often wondered how the game was doing the link between the displayed video and the controls to perform 'on the right time'?
Especially when you know this
A game is about 90 sec long, no matter you play well or not. After a game over, the projector doesn't rewind the wheel (and it's just technically impossible because this film reel does an 'infinite loop'). It means that a game never start at the same 'frame', so how the hell the game handles the player controls, in order to make something 'coherent' with what happens on the screen, huh?
For a laser disk game such Dragon's Lair, it's quite easy because there is a program on a PCB who can establish the right action to do, on the right time, during the right frames...but in it this 'EM' game running a projector without any 'frames control?  how ? how? how the hell how?

And the answer came, yes, after seeing this video footage.   8) The bottom of the picture shows 'in white' the 'OK area' where the player's driving wheel position can be positioned. If the racing wheel is positioned somewhere in the 'black area', you fail...

While knowing this, it was probably quite easy to create many different movies, because there's no change to do except to replace the film reel which includes the 'ok/not wheel position'  :)
Kasco probably released few movies per regional locations? Obviously at last one for France because we can now refer to this first film reel digitized!  :)
It's funny because we could also create our own footage... like driving inside our own town... ;D

Now remember I own THREE movies :

The first one was NOS/boxed and you can see it on youtube
The second one was NOS/boxed and you'll see it on youtube very soon!  ;)
The third one is the one located inside the cabinet

...we will see what kind of locations/cars used for the two others movies  ;)

Oh... all I'm saying here is just by deduction/analysis of the informations I own at this precise moment, because the game is currently non-working...

Yeah, that would be very interesting to know that! Maybe Gyruss can explains the process?  ;)

Amazing how the whole stunt action looks "real". I could almost think not all the car were driven by stuntmen...

Yeah I agree... it looks so 'real'!  ;D
Oh, I'm also wondering how they film this? I mean Kasco (Japanese company) commissioned some guys/movie company in France to shoot this? I would be curious to know who and how they did this? Do they used stunt men? Do they worked with the police because it happened on public roads? Do they closed the roads? What was the 'request for proposal' submitted by Kasco? Any story board? :P All these details...  :P
Title: Re: # Road Trip # KASCO - THE DRIVER - ...it's a game with a red car, movie style...
Post by: level42 on November 26, 2014, 09:44:17 PM
Yeah, it's interesting that they went through all this trouble.....I mean...that must have been at least one full day of filming. And it was FILMING like old style of course...and the stunts had to be planned, rehearsed, roads/locations blocked off.....get the cars, the stunt-men.....that's a lot of money !

You'd expect them to go with just one film.....then again changing movies probably kept the machine earning money better.

Really curious about the other films. Was the one in the machine not scanned ?

About the process I think Gyruss said that scanner was pretty new and they can set it to different speeds/resolutions.

I like that there was no "repair" of the material (would be a lot of work by the way) but it's good to see that it's film :)

It's a 4k scanner (although we only have the 2k licence) and there are only 2 of those in the Netherlands. The scanning was done in realtime..
Bruno gave us 2 films, but they both had the same content. If you guys have any more questions about it i'll ask the operators to answer them.  :)

Can I get an absolute confirmation that there are no ROMs found inside this beast (film projector and otherwise), and any "programming" is done through the filmstrip or the other optical cards shown earlier in this thread? Looks like it's mainly TTL discrete / electromechanical?

wow ! the game which I played when I was 13 or 14 years old (im 41 now :D)
played it on a local fair arcade hall wich came year in the city (in the summer) where I did live,
seen it only 2 times there, after it was gone. never seen it again,
few years ago I seen that movie on youtube ( yellow cabinet where you see how its working)
the game wich I played myself was a red cabinet with blue car chair, in fact, the game was not popular at all,
think I was the only one who did put money in
if I remember well: people where playing all the time atari's pole position, hyper Olympic and kung-fu master at that time,

I remember you had to follow a red car ( Japanese car) going trough traffic, and there was a moment 2 cars did stop and there
was just enough space to go between ;D
very impressed I was in that time  :D

but now my story :
2 years ago I seen advertising on a local website here, a guy who sold old arcade games, on one of the pictures from the game he was selling I could
see this kasco driver game in the background, did call him to ask if he still had it, no luck, he sold it, but he did give me the phone number
from the buyer, I did call him to ask if he still had it, and if he would sell it to me, he told me yes, come to look and we will see what we can do ;
so i almost bought a "driver" game myself, and to be honest I think its the same game here which you bought here, bcs there are not so many around I guess  ;)

I arrived at the guy= huge building full of arcade games  ,a small little city close to Gent, Belgium ( I was really impressed what I seen there)
a lot of games ,even n.o.s games ,never used, old stock, I don't know, but was paradise for me  ;D
we did try to power it on, but yeah, nothing happened,  I was doubting to buy it or not, bcs asking price was pretty high.
seller told me, its mechanical so cant be much wrong, and told me the 16mm films you can still buy new ( to be honest i did not believe you can
still find the 16 mm movies new, but seems I was wrong )
he told I will fix it and call me back in some time,
did call him around one month later and he told me :it already gone/sold,so I was to late and still high price for me, maybe If I would seen it working
I would forget the price  ;D
anyway, im very happy to see the game here, and even more happy to see that movie with the French cars,
I really hope you will keep going to convert the other movies which you have, I think the one with the Japanese cars must be in the game itself.
I hope one day I will see that movie again which I played so many years ago,  almost 30 years ago !
again, very happy to see this game, and really hope you keep going to digitize the other movies.
ps: lovely site and love to see the trips you make ! keep going on and great site !
greetings ,Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Glad you appreciate this stuff, and nice story by the way. Mine is quite similar... with the exception I played/viewed that game ...only once I think, during the annual village fair.
But that was a strong enough experience that I still remember!  :)
I should upload the second video footage soon...

thanks ! = cant wait to see that next movie(s)  ;) hope its the one which I did seen/played almost 30 years ago,
I think its the same cabinet which you have that I seen to this guy, I remember the steering wheel was in bad condition, material almost gone,
he did open the back, I seen the projector inside, and that small "disk" round thing which is turning around when the game is not been played ( like a demo)
it was not in good shape, did suffer from heat or so,  hot temperatures I think,
anyway, hope yours is or will work one day.
grtz, tommy ( sorry about my bad English)

@level 42 : yep, around 15 km from gent, the guy don't advertises in newspapers or on internet,
i was just lucky to get in touch with him, regular house, but behind the house there is a big building (like a old hypermarket building or so)
a lot of games are stored there , don't want to give more details, probably the owner would not appreciate that.
but it was the biggest collection I ever seen , 200 ,300 games ( wild guess)  very very old games, completely mechanic games, think 30 /40 years old
I never seen this kind of games before, like with mechanical puppets dancing when you put money in ,
I remember I seen a n.o.s night driver stand up arcade wrapped in plastic , also a Hang on sega , also n.o.s
even some games staying outside , completely gone or almost gone from the weather.
groeten uit belgie  ;)  tommy

Did the guy doing the digitisation tell you what format the original film was in?

I know most folks are saying 16mm, but with only 1 set of sprockets on the reel, it looks more like Super 8mm to my eyes.

I've the the rip of the second film realm, but there's no crash scene in it.
In fact there's no 'crash scene' movie footage at all in that game. I would say if you don't follow the red car, you simply don't score, but you can't crash the car...
