Title: [Scratch build] Zaccaria Piggybank - Let the cash flow in !
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on August 03, 2011, 11:09:38 AM
Time for some woodshop practice from my side..

I want to make a "themed" Piggybank, and what comes to mind when your are an arcade lover ??

Yes, A miniature cabinet with a coinslot in the top  :spaceace:

As i Like Zaccaria's and i already have the sidepanels in Illustrator, the design will be a mini zacc  :-*

Also another nice thing is that there is a zacc called "Money Money", so that also fits the theme perfectly !

Here we go ...
Lets find some wood first..
Me and my little helper agreed that the wood taken from this pallet will do fine..

I got the blueprints right here dad !  :D

Okay son, but look carefully if they are accurate..

They look fine to me dad.

I taped the blueprint to the wood, and will use a knive to transfer the outline to the wood

cutout ready, lines clearly visible..  mission accomplished !

To mark the corners, i cut out another blueprint and trace the curves from that as a guide..

while cutting, my little helper wanted to cut too, so he brought his scissors also  ;D

Corners marked..

Trace complete ..

Used the circular saw to "free" the two usable panels from the pallet..

Hmmm  leftovers, i can find some use for those ...
nothing goes to waste  8)

Clamped 2 pieces together, i will saw them in one go..

Almost there...

two sides ready and the same...

Starting to look like a zacc..  :P

Time to saw the rest of the pieces..
more than enough wood left..

Using the guide i made the strokes of wood so they are the same width

a few minutes later, 6 strokes of wood ready  ::)

since the wood was a bit bend, i clamped them together and i will leave them sit overnight to straight out as far as possible..

Thats it for today, later more...

Stay tuned !

Lol, brilliant idea! ;D
I just checked Money Money in mame( I don't have the original pcb yet), it also rocks.
The best choice for a piggy bank. ;D

Haha that's cool!

If you need better art pictures for Money Money, I have badly damaged one here with me in the US (the arts in tact but the cab has fallen appart).

Paul.

That would be awsome Paul !

I need the bezel, Marquee, CPO and the cardboard bezel (it has some fireworks or something ?) in an as straight as possible shot by camera (highest res possible please) , or even better; scans ! (if possible...)

If the files are big, i can make an FTP account here for you ...

OK, I'll try and get those the next time I'm up at my warehouse (some time in the next week or so).

BTW.
Used this image, and uploaded the marquee and entire pic to klov  ;) - as we all know, im the only one allowed to do so  ;D ;D ;D

Post by: Etienne MacGyver on August 03, 2011, 10:03:26 PM
Thanks guys for your nice words  :-*

Okay, next step, measure where the supports for the side need to come.
Because i only know the width between the sides after scaling it, i needed to calculate the height of the bezel and marquee.

I measured the dimentions of my CK bezel and marquee, and scaled it down so it would match the sides, and presto, the height values are in  ::)

Time to create the bezel and the marquee since that will be a huge part of the unknown location of the supports that i need.

I did have a leftover piece of plexi after my temporary CP creation of my CK, so i sawed that to the correct size

The bezel and marquee after cleaning..

and another shot..

Trying to see where they will come approximately..

Put the other side there out of curiosity,..
hmm does not look bad at all ..

Thats it for today, tomorow there will be another day  8)

Cool! - if that had been a 1:1 scale model, the marquee and bezel would have been bullet proof! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

A bit towards it - a scan of the Jackrabbit monitor surround. Your lucky day - one day later and it would have been back in the cab :)

I'll get a photo of the Money Money instruction sheet to replace the Jackrabbit one - it's otherwise the same surround.

The scan is as 15 sheets in 3 x 5 matrix (missing the empty one, 11) at 150 DPI. Total size is 60Mb. I know there are better art folks with the right software on this DL who can composite them back as one and regrade them  ;D

Regards,

Paul.

The stitching started out perfectly, only from scan 10 and up it misses some pieces here and there..  :-\

Could you rescan those with more overlap paul ?
(or all if its not too much of your time, but then with the edges also with overlap ?)

Thanks !

EDIT:

Looking again at the cab, could you also make a straight picture of both inner sides (triangle part) ?

That would be Awsome Paul !

Hahahaha, love it, this is going to turn out great!
Too bad you have a little bit of a space issue, would love to see you make a full seize replica.
Title: Re: [Scratch build] Zaccaria Piggybank - Let the cash flow in !
Post by: PaulSwan on August 04, 2011, 05:23:03 PM
Yes, I'll have another shot at the scan the other way round and without the white background because it looks like that's making the colour go off.

I'll also get a photo of the side pieces - they are still on the wall of the cab.

Paul.

Just a little update,

I did the calculation of the supports and its time to create them  :)

First ouline the width of the panels..

Using the bezel, marquee and controlpanel as a reference for that part..

hmm really start to look like a zacc !  :-*

Little pieces of wood as supports measured and sawed..

Time to check them and position them..

Glued them in place and fixated them with some clamps.

Will let them sit overnight and tomorow they will be rock solid !
This glue is superstrong  :-*

If you really need to glue someting that needs to last, this is the glue i reccomend !  :spaceace:

Later more folks !

Another shot at it, also including photos of the two side walls...

http://www.zzzaccaria.com/artwork/Jackrabbit/Jackrabbit monitor surround 2.zip (http://www.zzzaccaria.com/artwork/Jackrabbit/Jackrabbit monitor surround 2.zip)

This one is a 3 x 8 matrix, 100Mb or so, done the other way round and with dark blue backdrop.

Paul.

Again a little update..

After removing the clamps from the supports, its time to clean the "gluebrew"  ::)

i just cutted out the brew with a hobbyknife (scalpelsharp) where the panels will be glued to in the future, not everywhere..
In detail..

Then i started to create the backpanel of the monitor area, and glue that to the monitor support..

Note that the underside of the monitor panel already has a 45 degree angle  ;D

after figuring out the monitor area, i was not happy with my earlier control panel..
so i cutted a new ..  still needs some filing at the edge..

The panel also has a 45 degree angle for easy mounting later..

Thats it for today guys ..

Do you already have side art and glass art available?
Paul.
Title: Re: [Scratch build] Zaccaria Piggybank - Let the cash flow in !
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on August 05, 2011, 10:05:12 PM
I still need:

The Bezel glass
The control panel
The marquee

i only have some crappy pics of those..

i have highres fullsize scans stitched together from spacestation sideart.

I will use that, since i like that more than the starsplash that they used for money money original
also money money is in a full upright originaly, so i just put it in a mini  ;D

If you can provide the other artwork too, i will be very gratefull !

Thanks already !  :spaceace:

Thanks Ully !
Although i disagree with you , i cannot imagine that you with your woodworking skills cannot pull something like this off.

anyway, i continue..
Glued the monitor area in place..

Just put an extra clamp in there my little helper  8)

Because it is getting more difficult, i called in a pro  ;D
That bob the builder clothes that he is wearing is a sign of professionality   :-*

After some sawing i got the front plate and backplate ready..

Lets see how it looks on the cab..
hmm it falls off every time i want to take a pic.

take this dad ! clamp it and shoot that pic !  :)

ok ok ok... i will do as told   ::)

The space is smaller than i expected, but still big enough to accept bills and coins i think..

If it turns out to be too narrow, i'll create an extra slot for bills in the coindoor  :P

It was a nice weather, but now it started to rain, and also i have more to do today than only this, so thats it for today guys ..

Great pics. Isn't it fun when your kid wants to help ? Mine keeps asking if I need to do any soldering work for the cabs again, because he wants to do it :)

Those Bob the Builder cloths are great....it also made me realize how fast time goes, because Mark is already way too old for Bob....he used to love him though :)

trust me, etienne, my woodworking skills aren't that good. all i do on my cabs is use wood filler and sand it down later :P

honestly, i don't think i could pull off a scratch-built cabinet!

btw, thanks for those great pictures, your little helper seems to have a lot of fun with this project. :spaceace:

Lets see whats on the menu today..

I need to prepare the lower backpanel before i glue it.
The original door has also this kind of construction, so ofcourse i replicate that  ;D
We do that with this machine...  (dont know the name in english )

And as i expected, a nice clean cut  :-*

Glued the bottom, rear and frontpanel in place, and clamped it up.

Now again the boring part..
Waiting for the glue to dry   :D

later more guys ...

Last friday i was at my customer who also like what i am doing, and he offered me to use theyre A3 Laminate machine..

Time to create some Sidearts !

Not very fast, but it does the trick!

Good, back on the woodwork.
Yesterday i was a little too enthausiast with the glue..

Inside is even worse  :o

Thats where my new friend comes in   :D

I went to the local DIY shop and bought a pin that is normal for a wheel to mount under a closet or something, and i think it will do nice as a repro joystick, since the original is also "pin style"  8)

also i needed leg levellers, thats where i will use the bolts for, and i found also in my local DIY store the bushes with threats..

Holes marked..  ::)

I tried to screw one of the threath thingies inside, but i did not manage to get it in straight, so i grabbed my threat maker..

I know its for steel, but it works in wood too ..  :P

Leg levellers in place..

In detail..

It works, the cab is standing on his feet !  :spaceace:

After that i created two more pieces of wood with angles, which are a pain in the ass to make

Glued everything together and its again time to wait untill the glue is dry...

And again like before....  Later more  8)

looking great, would love to see you build a full seize one!

And could you zaccaria guys please tell me what the deal with zaccaria side art? It all looks very spacey, what was the inspiration behind it?

LSD?  ;) ;D I'm not saying i don't like it, it's just very different from what was out there at the time.

Shouldn't the monitor be almost horizontal?

There is nothing in between the front glass and the back door of the cab except the curved monitor surround backdrop, at least on the full-size curve-marque version of the cab. I have a picture of the cab with the surround removed I'll upload later.

I've got some pictures of the Money Money marque and brought the MM control panel back home with me to disassemble and scan in.

It turns out my Money Money has a Jackrabbit instruction sheet in it, so I don't have a good picture of one of those.

Your cab is coming along great! We'll all be asking for one too :)

Paul.

Yes it does, but then i dont have a "path" where the coins can slide down  ;D

I have a empty shell here where i took the measurements from, so no need for a pic, but thanks anyway !

Yep , it is nasty, once on the hands, and you have it there for about a week  :D
but its extremely strong !

i can confirm !  ::)

Because i dont use any other supports like nails, i want this to be strong;
I mean alll those millions that will enter there weights a ton  ;D

that is only for wood, this is also for other materials:

Hoogwaardige, watervaste en vullende polyurethaan houtlijm voor binnen en buiten (D4-norm).
Toepassingsgebied:
Voor het lijmen van vrijwel alle houtsoorten, onderling en op formica, metaal, steen, beton en diverse kunststoffen. Speciaal voor het lijmen en repareren van (hout)constructies en verbindingen waaraan hoge eisen worden gesteld.

translated:

High quality, waterproof polyurethane glue and filling for indoor and outdoor (D4 standard).

I have tested its strength by trying to rip the pieces apart, and its almost like welding, it breaks not on the glue, but the wood under/near it ! :o

Now that's an idea - put a 10" monitor in it and you're all set :)

Did the scans of the monitor surround come out better the second time around?

Paul.

Thanks guys!

well, its is not going to work with a monitor, not enough space in there.
but there will be some life in it, ill post that when that plan is figured out  ;)

The monitor surrounding is more than good for this mini, but to repro it fullsize, i did not managed to get it perfectly stitched.
But i am a happy man with this ! :

Do you think you can get the other graphics digitalised this or next week ?

if not, i'll just wait more, i am very happy you will take your time to scan and photograph it for me !  :spaceace:

Yeah, the second scan came out much better :)

I have a few close up photos of the marque to upload and have the CP here to dissassemble so I can scan the overlay fully. I'm hoping to get those done by the end of the week.

Not quite sure if the monitor glass will scan. If not, might have to be some close photos for that. Anyone have any pointers for scanning glass?

Paul.

Thanks paul!

i can "rebuild" the glass , i saw that its a pattern so if you can give me one part of the pattern and the size of the glass, then i can reconstruct it very easy.

back to the build..

done some details like the upper part including "marquee hole"..

here a pic from another angle..
note the beautifull control panel art done by my little helper  ;D ;D

looks like everything fits together..

so after creating the missing part in the front under the CP i glued it together..

i guess you know the next step already..  yes indeed time to dry  :D

i will see if i need to vector them, but i think for this mini the raster will do fine !

Thanks again, now i can position the holes for the buttons and joystick on the CP..  :P

EDIT:

marquee "flat"  :D :

EDIT:

I need to give you a super big  :spaceace: !

and this is why : you made a perfect straight shot of the bezel !

Note that this is displayed at 500%...

Look at the guideline left and right without rotating/tilting the picture :

Soon this bezel will be available in vectors  ::)

The vector start has been made..

i think it will be finished soon because this one is not too dificult..

the biggest part is done, just i need to copy this 7 times and rotate it into place, and some minor "corners"   8)

Lets see if there is something missing from the shell...
Yes, a backdoor..  maybe tonight if i got some spare time..  ::)

Found some time to make the backdoor..
I used the same method as before to create the parts that will slide into eachother.

Time to drill a hole, i mean a backdoor needs a lock right ?  ::)

Lock in place, fits exactly in a 18mm hole..  :P

And ofcourse a key, we need to open it when its full with all those millions that i expect to come in there  ;D ;D

Fitting the door, and hold it in place temporary, because i still need to create some missing supports..

Better do that right away, i mean whats the point of waiting  ???

This is the last glue-dry session i think, so now its time to start thinking about the electronics..

I mean this cab needs to come to life !
you guys did not really think that i would leave this cab without some kind of electronics right ?  :D

I got already some ideas up my sleeve, so stay tuned !

Now that the woodwork is almost finished, its time for some experimenting with the electronics.

First i had some brainstorming sessions on creative improvisation..  8)

I went to the local "Action" which is a discount store.
There they sell also some "chinese rubbish" which i can butcher and salvage parts from.  ;D

The shopping basket contained:
a "Minerstyle headlight"
a "talking photoframe"
two "bicycle "headlights"

All with LED's and with different patterns of lighting with the press of the button..

and the best part... € 6,- total Including the batteries  :P

Later i went to my local electronics store for some "Arcade buttons" but then miniature style..
This is the best i could find..  ::)

The box of the "Talking Photoframe" states 6 seconds of recording time.
which is enough for the sample i want to use..  :P

The "Miner lamp" contains of 7 LED's and thats more than enough to luminate the Marquee i think.

Also bought some pencils with transparent holders..

Before slaughter..

And there i have one transparent tube..
The idea is to put the led's in there so i have a repro of a fluorecent tube..  8)

The doctor is ready to operate..  ;)

The extraction is complete..  :)

This is where i came for, 7 led's on a pcb with regulator

Solderd them in a row, and inserted them in the tube.

After testrunning it, i discovered that the led's only "shine" forward, so my idea to replicate a tube was not working as expected.   :-\

Back to the drawingboard, and i decided to just drill 7 holes in the piece of plexi that represents the marquee..

The funny thing is that its possible to switch between the strongness of the lighting..

mode 1; 3 led's

mode 2; 5 led's

mode 3; 7 led's

back of the marquee..(one common wire, and 3 seperate wires (Indicated by the red shrinktube)

This is finished for now,

The idea is to use one of the 3 buttons on the control panel for the different lighting patterns in the marquee.

the other two buttons will get other functions..  ::)

Later more on that..

Stay tuned!

some stretching here and there and here you go dad, i also laminated it while i was at it... ;)

not bad if you ask me  ::)

Then my wife came to me; Honey i got you a present...  :P

Thanks guys.

I have been thinking about tmolding, but i have not find something that looks like it and also fits the width of the wood..

but lets see, its not finished yet  ;)

I have put some bondo here and there, and will sand it down later, it should be dry and hard by now..

next up monitor area, this needs to come to life too ofcourse, and not to forget the audio...  8)

I have 3 working buttons... one for the marquee, one for the monitor part and the last button i was thinking to use to initiate the audio sample..

also i need to see where to leave the batteries for with the electronics...

i mean, the free space that the batteries take, will create less space for all those €€€€€ that need to flow in  ;D

well i guess i can also empty it when its full..

I was thinking to position them under the two words "Money"

And since tomorow i will be going to my customer with the sealmachine, i prepared the final graphics

I also went to my mother to take some pics of the back of the cab, and scaled them down too..

Thanks for the offer andre, but in this one i will not intergrate a real monitor.

Talking about monitors, time for an experiment..
As space is an issue, i thought i could maybe save some space by replacing the 6 batteries by 1 battery

i mean 6x 1,5volts is 9 volts right ?  ;D

Soldering the switch contacts of the 3 units together..

Testing the individual unit before connecting them in series..

Well the idea was to chain the 3 units together, 3x 3 volts in series is 9 volts....

so far for the theory...., the practical side did something different as you can see ..

some of the LED's on the first unit in the chain started without even switching them on ....

and just long enough to take this pic, after that the led's went off and never on after that..

i smoked the first unit

so i decided to use the other two units and connect them parallel to one pair of batteries..  that works
so now i got some spare batteries  :P
Title: Re: [Scratch build] Zaccaria Piggybank - Let the cash flow in !
Post by: PaulSwan on August 21, 2011, 05:16:14 PM
You should have run the three lights off of one 2 x 1.5V AA pack. The batteries will last one third less time but the voltage will be right.

Because these are switching LED lights they wont work properly in parallel - you can only do a parallel hookup if the loads are pure constant resistance (generally) like traditional light bulbs.

Try again :)

Paul.

another setback today  >:(

i started to gut the "speech module" to integrate in the cab..
No problems so far..

After i took it apart, i accidently pressed the record button, which erased my recorded sample  >:(
anyway , that was not the worst, after soldering the extention wires, the unit died completely on me
I tried everything, but no go, i could record a sample, but the volume of the playback was unhearable, so i think with soldering i fried something..

anyway, new unit ordered..

good , after that i cutted the monitor part where the LED's need to go.
the two units cover each a word "money"

under the hole i just glued a bigger part of wood, and that was exactly deep enough to fit the heights of the LED's.

I verified the height with the "monitor area"

for the next speech unit i decided to integrate it completely on the bottom of the cab, with a hole in the bottom for the speaker.
re-recording and changing batteries can be done from the other side of the unit so that is also nice, since that part is accesible through the backdoor..

and because of my demolition, i got a spare set of batteries  ;D

so you see , every bad thing has its good thing  ;)

etienne, you really have to turn the game off from time to time, otherwise you will get some serious screenburn there! ;D

While waiting for the new "speech module" to arrive, i started to sand and paint the "visible parts"

there will be lots of parts covered by scanned sealed artwork but the ledges need to be black, so here we go..

Sanding ready..

In position ready for spraypainting ..

Backdoor finished, i did sprayed that totally since i dont know what to do yet, leave it painted, or use the scanned back
we will see what fits best..

black paint applied on the nessecary places..

After drying i am thinking to cover all that pain up with varnish just to make it more "durable"
(and because i still have this lying around  ;D )

Next up, installing the artwork...

Yesterday i glued the first sideart on the cabinet..

I used a modified version of the  "superully's pressure method" (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1843.msg37175#msg37175) :D
1x 10 liter, and 1x 5 liters makes 15 KG of pressure   ;)

Here is the sideart with the edges trimmed ..

Then me and my little helper installed the "back-art".
I think this is a very unique cab, since i never saw a cab with back-art before  ;D

And also the kickplate area with coindoor we glued in place..

Now i glued the other sideart and its in the shed under "the pressure" again..

probably my favorite topic this year! here's a request on what you have to do when the project is finished: i would love to see a "lord of the rings"-technique photo where you put the cab in the foreground and your litle helper in the background. if you align the cab and your son perfectly, it'll look as if he was playing the game!!! hope you know what i mean ...

Backdoor arts are awesome and it is also great, that the sidearts looks used, like 30 years old. ;D

@ Bela, I can garanty you that the sidearts are brand new  :D

@ Gyruss, Yes, it is , and i can already see he has got alot of my genes, he likes it very much himself
i am not asking him in any form to help, but he wants it, so i let him  ;)

no, just to give you an example:

the scenes with the hobbits and the humans / elves were filmed with one actor in the foreground and one actor in the background, thus making the background actor appear to be much smaller. it's called forced perspective and with it you can do stuff like this

in theory, you should be able to have your little helper play your piggybank as if it were a full upright cabinet! in theory ;)

I get it.

I'll see what i can do, he is 99% like me, and if there is one thing that i cannot do is "sitting still" (as you might have noticed) ;D

How are we going to fixate the marquee  ???

Yes ofcourse, like in reality; a marquee retainer  ;D
I found some piece of metal strip from an old refrigirator...

Lets see if i can "Mac gyver" something out of that..  ;)

First i cut the strip off with scissors..

and then its time to grind and file..   :P

And there it is; one marquee retainer..  :-*

I glued also the inner part arts of the monitor area and the backdoor cover..

Almost finished!
I just need to install the electronics, and glue the rest together..
the speech module is delivered, and the sample that i lost with the other unit is recreated.

Later more guys!

After finishing the cab you need to put a "Barbie" or a "Ken" in front of so your Die-Cast will be perfect !

first let me say congrats on the job you've done.

Again a little update..

After removing the clamps from the supports, its time to clean the "gluebrew"  ::)

let me share a tip about removing extra glue there's an easiest method, and really cheap one.
while the glue is still fresh and liquid, use a simple plastic straw (any local fast food can provide you more than you need for a whole life)
cut the straw as it collect the glue

as pics are self explanatory:

Thanks Eric ! That is a good tip.
but this "brew glue" came out during the drying, and i was not there watching it dry  :D

its like it starts to brew after one hour or something like that

Did just a little update, since my schedule was pretty busy today.
I re-installed the lock in the backdoor, and made a label for the key.
Also i fixated the joystick, but in a way so you can still move the joystick..  ::)

Hey zacc , How's it Hanging dude !   ;D
After i drilled the last holes for the cables and the speaker, i glued the speech unit in the bottom..

Here you can see the hole in the bottom where the audio sample will come from..

Thats it for today, as always.. later more  ;)

Time to finish this project..
The electric installation is comming up.
Since i don't want to have a bunch of wires loose inside i installed (just like in the real zacc) some cable duct..  8)

Same story for the bottom of the cab, since there will fall a lot of coins there i need to protect the speechunit, and in the same time the bottom is a battery compartiment for the batterypacks, so i made a "Double Bottom"  ::)

Lets test if it fits ..

Wiring time !
aaagghhhh   disaster strikes, one of te marquee leds did not lit, and after investigating, one of the legs broke off  >:(
Just in time, i ran to the store, (closes at 21:00 and it was 20:45..) an bought a new lampunit..
i left the middle led in place which is in the same time the mount fro the pcb, and re soldered everything.
one profit, it looks much more neat than before...  :-*

Battery packs and all wires in place...  :P

Time to install the double bottom..

And here the results..  ::)

The back..

and in the dark with the the lights on  :P

youtube video soon .. ;)

i will bring it to eurocade as the official donations piggybank..

I tried to make that shot, but in the hurry to get it on time to Eurocade, i positioned them the other way around
so the cab should have been in the front, and xander in the back...

anyway, here are the pictures :

By the way, Big Thanks to all of you for your support and nice comments about this creation !   :spaceace:

Working on a video as we speak, so i will upload that later..

The crew of Eurocade already knew that i was going to donate this piggybank, but maybe other people don't, so

I have donated the piggybank to the only true zaccaria collector that was attending Eurocade, so its not in my possesion anymore..

I will however build something else someday in the future, so there will be another report.

It was fun to create, and to see the results and nice comments at eurocade .

Again , Thank you All !
