Title: Work In Progress - Show Us What You are Working On
Post by: Pinge on May 07, 2017, 04:42:50 PM
Maybe there is a thread like this on the forum already?

I thought it would be nice with a thread where we all can post pictures (and som text ofc) to show the community what we are working on at the moment.
Larger projects and in-depth work do better in their own threads but alot of what atleast I tend to work on fits better in a thread like this!

At the moment I have a Powerbrick from a Nintedo cabinet I recived a while ago that I want to clean up and give some new caps.
I checked all the voltages (unloaded) prior to the capkit Im about to install, everything checked put fine except 16V, after some searching I think that 16V is not needed and therefore it´s all good with no reading on the 16V pins.

So here it is, dont know when I have time to actually finish it, but the work has started anyways.

Bought a Defender that was completely dead. The monitor now seems to work but the PCB not so much. While waiting for some PCB parts I'm now doing some wood work.

The art work was fortunately in good shape, but the bottom of the cabinet was falling apart in splinters. So now working with bondo and sanding to get this baby in prime shape once again

wanted to comment on this one, too, but you were faster!  :ghost:

seriously, manual sanding? this must take forever and you need a new hand afterwards ...  :P

Well, today I woke up like this:

Nah, I have an old black & decker rotationsander, but it looks like that sandpaper was too thin for that machine and it got damaged after 1 minute or so.
Then I switched to hand sanding to do something at least. Today, I put some duct tape on the backside of that sandpaper and will try it again with the machine. If that doesnt help, maybe I will order a new machine.

About that defender, did you cut off the bottom of the cab and put some new wood panel into it?

do yourself a favor, andreas, get a new EXPENSIVE tool. you're going really strong in this fantastic hobby of ours, so this will be an investment you won't regret on future projects!!!

I will buy a good rotation sander for sure. One big benefit is much less dust at the garage.

No, the bottom is original and seems to be fine. It's the lower parts of the sides/back/front that were in bad condition. But not fot much longer  ;)

No really hard working in progress here in summery Sweden...
But I finally got around to finish the cap-kit on the Nintendo PP-7B PSU, I will test it soon and see if the voltages still is spot on as they were pre-capkit

I got a Galaga PCB the other day that I did a quicktest on last night, only tested Video, after replacing two faulty RAM it fired up, think it´s something wierd with the sprites though...
dont really know Galaga but the bugs are not suppose to be flickering?
And my ship is kind of off-white in the color, It should be bright white I suppose?

I have ordered a jamma adapter (a friend from the Swedish forum makes really nice ones) http://retro-games.com/

For me, this month is panel's month!!!

13 different panels ready for epoxy painting:

And one week later, the same panels! (it's magic)

Let's start applying CPOs :)

Title: Re: Work In Progress - Show Us What You are Working On
Post by: Pinge on May 21, 2017, 09:03:56 PM
You sure have some CPO-applying to do there, I am not jealous.

Today I continued with a little Ninty-project... a Sanyo that need some TLC.
First of all I tested it one last time to make sure that everything is more or less allright, or maybe to see it running for the last time if I fuck things up.

And beacuse It was a beatiful and hot day I could do the disassembly and washing outside for once, awesome.
I include a picture of how dirty it was before...

edit: I did NOT include a picture of how dirty it was due to max attachment size.... I think 1Mb is to little these broadbandy-days

never done it like that before! there are a lot of people out there saying you will never get all the humidity off the monitor, no matter how long you let it dry ...

I did almost the same way in my bathtub with my Amidar's chassis, installed it a day later without any problem, it works fine. ;)

Winni, the german monitor god  ;D, said once that you should at least protect all high voltage parts from water. And if you clean it that way, you should wait about 2 weeks to get everything out.
I remember that because I cleaned my Defender monitor also that way  ;D

Atarimania,
do I see a missile command cp in there? Hmm, I would need at least a black 4" trackball for MC, or a complete cp... ;)
Title: Re: Work In Progress - Show Us What You are Working On
Post by: Pinge on May 22, 2017, 10:34:57 AM
Andreas: I know where there might be a MC panel with trackball... Im going to that warehouse with Kralleman next month if things fall into place.

Regarding chassis-wash,.this is my 4th to clean this way, never had a problem..OFC i dry it throughly, atleast 6-8h in ftont of a heating-fan and compressed air every now and then during the drying

Today I started looking at my first 2 zaccaria cabinets.
I have bought this at an auction.
After a short check up these cabinets were working fine while they were offered as not working.
The first was a legend of hero tonma inside and the 2nd a popeye bootleg pcb.
Now begins the great cleaning and here and there a little to makeover.
Looking for the right marquee , cpo and pcb.
This is how i will spend my summer.

Doing sander work in an apartment is pretty far from optimal, but in my case it's the only option apart from taking it outside for every session.

I decided to do the work in the bath room since it's naturally the most bondo dust friendly place. It's not alot of space but what can you do?

After several hours of bondo/sanding/bondo/sanding repeat, it's finally ready for some paint job at least

Currently working on the Walls Down cabinet (Atari Breakout clone) and making some great progress.
Did some rewiring work on the harness & front panel and got the PCB to spit out a decent video signal!
All that needs to be done is remove the jitter from the pedal (probably a voltage issue) & running into some bad luck in regards to
monitors. Can't seem to find a CRT that's the correct size and reasonably close so I can pick it up

Overall I am not spending as much time as I would like on arcade repairs the last few weeks due to the company where I work at moving locations.
But! Here is a picture of a project we are working on, as its semi/kinda/somehow/a bit related? (It's a tractor simulator to teach students how to behave in traffic).

Bought a Rampage this weekend, one of my top "must have"-games  :D

The side art was still there & looked decent enough. The marquee was in great shape.

The same couldn't be said about the rest of the cabinet unfortunately.

It had at some point been converted to a "Moonwalker". The CP was stripped and painted black, as well as 3 Atari cone buttons sloppily drilled on the top.

The bezel glass was in great shape but the art was ruined due to the "Moonwalker" stickers. The harness had also been molested.

Apart from some sprite errors the PCB seems to work fine though. Must find a sound card

Started to work on the CP yesterday. This abomination is going to be a Rampage CP once again. All the buttons and joysticks are original.

Started by removing all metal parts and put them in an ultrasonic bath to remove paint and rust.

Then moved on to the metal plate. Some Citristrip does wonders if you want to remove paint

After the paint was gone there are still alot of rust, so some grinding work is next

The metal parts are now as good as new  :)

And my best friendo Chemical metal will help to undo those horrible drilled holes.
A hint to anyone using this, have a piece of teflon where you want to have a plain surface (you can see that I have a piece of teflon under the CP in this photo). Chemical metal has a bad habbit of sticking to basically everything but not teflon though. Easy as pie to remove the teflon after the work is done.

Looking good, roger. If you need some pictures, I can take it from my Rampage which is waiting in the garage.

Ok, update from my side.
Im not really working on them but yesterday, the transport company showed up, again  ;D
And yes, I know, this is MUCH worse than I thought and it means a hell of work, but well...

Ok, and the last 1 arrived now too. I bought that cab from germany, and then the shipping company screwed up and sent it to the dutch - TO HOLLAND, can you believe that ( there are already a lot of collectors there  ;D ).

Ok here it is:

For a little extra cash, I got this too:
Its an original DK Jr board, hacked to play DK3.

Sadly, ive seen another cab online, which I would really like. But there is already no space in the new, coming gameroom. So I would have to store other cabs in the garage, which isnt really good. Lets sleep over it...

something is missing?

The bodyframe around the coinbox is completely close, no chance for a coin to hide. So I dont have much hope to find coins in that cab ( ok, I havent searched for them ). So at the end, I thought lets have a look why the cab stands so out of position to the front and...

I have never played mousetrap... but I probably will one day I hope.

I have been bad to update what Im working with...

I try to troubleshoot why I cant get the picture centered on the Mario Bros I got, I have ruled out the monitor from the equation by testing it on another Sanyo.
And I have changed the horizontal adjustment pot on the pcb with no luck... so Im stucked at the moment sadly.

Another project is to add a highscoresavekit to my original Bubble Bobble board, I removed the z80 and installed a socket with great success but the highscore savekit itself wont boot the game, I only come to the settings and save them and then back to settings again... emailing back and forth with higshcoresavekits.com at the momenet.
And to make this post a little bit more interesting I will add a phot of the kit installed

After countless hours of wood work, my Defender was finally ready for some paint. "Ready" as in I decided that enough was enough.

You can bondo, grind, bondo, grind, bondo, grind for forever, there will always be some ruggedness, specially when you work with veneer.

So, living in an apartment, the kitchen has to do as paint room  ;D

For asteroids you also need a Vector monitor

I think there is one in my shelves;-)

But you are right, I prefer MC - But it depends on the CP.

not really any work and even less progress here sadly.
But I have started to connect my cabinets in the basement to nice poweroutlets....

And today I recived another pcb, PacLand... works with my Galaga adapter but the colors are wierd...

I also try to figure out sound issue on my PunchOut... cant get my head around it, it´s not a PCB issue (thank god)

Pacland is one of my favorites :D

I solved the color issue with Pacland, Blue and Red was swapped on the jamma adapter... so for once it was an easy fix.

I have also spent some time in the basement with connection the games that are staying (all except Badlands). Made a quick video of it, sorry for the wrong orientation of it

Ok, So I finally found some spare time during late evenings/nights and finally started to take a look at the monitor for my Taito Space Invaders.
Since I bought it a year ago I have never had any picture on it so I removed it from the cabinet in the warehouse and took it home to the bench.

The monitor is a Hitachi mcl-461f, a not to well documented monitor, It is actually a japanese TV that Taito used for some early games.

I realized I needed 100Vac to feed it, and thankfully I had a transformer from a Nintendo cabinet laying around that I could use.

First I hooked up a NES to the monitor and after som tuning I got a picture, but only if brightness and contrast was turned all the way up. I then hooked up my Space Invaders pcb (it did not come with the cabinet).
It worked but the picture slowly faded away until it was not visible at all. So when a unknown component got warm it did not work anymore was my guess.
(http://forumbilder.se/G99O7/1.jpg?width=150) (http://forumbilder.se/G99O7/1)
(http://forumbilder.se/G99O7/2.jpeg?width=150) (http://forumbilder.se/G99O7/2)

I bought caps for the monitor a while back and decided to throw them in there, and I was more than happy when it actually seemed to have fixed the problem, now the brightness is very close to completely off and it still is bright and clear. Still have to leave it on a longer while for a stress-test.
(http://forumbilder.se/G99O7/3.jpeg?width=150) (http://forumbilder.se/G99O7/3)

So today I took the cabinet home from the warehouse to prepare it, it is a unknown PCB in it and the bezel that came with the cabinet is for Galaxy Wars, but I dont think the PCB is that game.
The wiring is messed up so I have to figure that out...

Stay tuned for update in the hopefully not to distant future

Thanks!
So i kept working on the game last night, tried to figure out what PCB they had in the cabinet when I got it.

This is how they had wired the Video signal, they tied RGB and Sync together to send it to the B&W monitor... there is a pot on each of the RGB-wires...
(http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/de5c1868-d9e1-4f77-be52-d01df48b3caf.jpg?width=150) (http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/de5c1868-d9e1-4f77-be52-d01df48b3caf)

How do you quicktest this, I figured out the easiest way were to take my small PVM and BNC-alligatorclip wires  :)
Didnt know if this should work or not, I hooked them up at the potentiometers.
(http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/25b44b15-7072-4b5d-a6b4-a050c3297a69.jpg?width=150) (http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/25b44b15-7072-4b5d-a6b4-a050c3297a69)

It worked straight away, dont know if the colors are correct, I supect not, but the PCB works and sound is working, I have not tried any inputs though..
(http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/19de3f94-4de9-4922-bbb6-2ed7405657db.jpg?width=150) (http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/19de3f94-4de9-4922-bbb6-2ed7405657db)

So what game is it? It says Universal on the PCB:s so my guess would be Cosmic Monsters
https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7403

This is what the PCB looks like, It is now removed from the cabinet for good I think.
(http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/99ea9232-ef03-4ab6-ac9a-9b8de9cd10c4.jpg?width=150) (http://forumbilder.se/G99R9/99ea9232-ef03-4ab6-ac9a-9b8de9cd10c4)

My next step is to clean the cabinet and then wire Space invaders in there instead.
I made a plan for it last night ....

It is a mission impossible, but I have all the ones that I like. :D
I don't have these:
Space Fortress, Laser Battle, Buck Rogers, Frogger, Astro Wars, Shooting Gallery, Money Money, Jack Rabbit, maybe some more.
My gameroom is full and I'm not planning to build a bigger one or remove games, so I'm happy with my collection, don't want more. :D

Pinge and me did some work in the storehouse this weekend.

Some stuff that's going away to a happy buyer

Pinge did some cleanup & reorganizing since the storehouse looked like a mess. In the meantime I did some work with the monitors to my Pacman & Donkey Kong Jr (from Barry)

I had cleaned the monitors with a garden hose & recapped the chassis. Success, both worked fine!

Some nice burns in Pacman

Everything recapped & cleaned in Donkey Kong Jr. It looks great! Only need to make a black monitor bezel & this baby is finished

Suddenly I heard a "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!" followed by a big bang. This is what I saw:

When moving the Exidy Circus cab, the back board (that Pinge was holding) came loose and the whole cab fell forward with a bang. Pinge was not happy.

Luckily the result of this faux pas was "only" some wood damage. The monitor was ok & the front glass (with the special "bulged" letters) survived without a scratch.

A fucking shame on a cabinet in beautiful condition... I will burn in hell for it...

I have worked on bits and pieces but have been bad on the documenation... I have to do it better from now on...
On friday we will go on a roadtrip so expect a thread about that in the near future..

Hopefully we have an opportunity to go there in December but it all depends on other commitments, we are going that direction then but the timeframe is uncertain.

Np pinge, I just thought this IS the warehouse run again   :)
And im not in a hurry, have too many other things to do ( and this weekend is budapest arcade time  ;D ).

And btw beside my work at the house, I could not resist grabbing this little gem:

The goal was to get that simpson euro version ( crt not working but playing blind ). Its from an collector here in austria. He told me that he already sold 20 cabs, but still have 60 remaining ones. Sadly, they were not at the pickup place and he does not remember the titles ( he had a few TAB universal cabs and photo touch too ).

When he offered me trog, I wasnt very interested, because the pcb is missing too. So I told him a price what I would be willing to pay and he said some numbers. But they were still too high for me and when I thought about trog ( me and him was a bit in a hurry ), he lowered the price and yeah, you see the result in the picture.

I already got an offer for the pcb from MikeMCbike, so lets put the missing parts together and see if it works.

Very nice, I have never hard of that Pin.. any fun?

I have been working on bits and pieces on my projects, put some time and effort in on my spare DK Jr cabinet this week, I have plans for it and parts are on the way so It would be nice to have it as ready as possible...
Things were falling apart wood wise sp I had to disassemble the whole front and make it sturdier with a few brackets and some new holes.

I have also removed the monitor which I cant get my head around at the moment... maybe have to redo the capkit and do a potkit on the remoteboard and neckboard. Hopefully I get another chassis to try aswell.

Is that your kitchen?  ;D

Today at about 12:30

Since Arcadiafest in hungary, I felt in love with Stern´s Berzerk. So it already was on my "must have" list and a few weeks later, I found one in germany in not so bad condition.
The seller had many cabs - sadly as you already know, im out of space. Ok one more was possible, but thats it, really, im serious  ;D

I wasnt the only one who was curious, my kitty Mimi was inspecting the cab too:

I was never a huge fan of space invaders ( even if it looks great with that fluorescent colors ), maybe because in my teenage, I saw later games like Galaga & the 80´s.
On an arcade event at Luigi and Kirk, I played the first time Asteroids in an cab and man I liked it. So in the 80´s, there were this naughty italian company called Sidam which made 1:1 copies of Atari games. Off course they called it Asterock and not Asteroids, smart italians  :D.

I really like the style of the Asterock cabinet and I also found a little backstory about sidam. The following link is already translated to german, but just switch to your prefered language at the top.

https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=de&js=y&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.retrocampus.com%2F2015%2F12%2F31%2Fsidam-videogiochi-a-torino%2F&edit-text=&act=url (https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=de&js=y&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.retrocampus.com%2F2015%2F12%2F31%2Fsidam-videogiochi-a-torino%2F&edit-text=&act=url)

Berzerk sadly has a modified control panel, that extra button. They made it because they put "Rastan Saga" into the cab and scratched the whole artwork off the cp. So my plans are to close that extra hole and put an repro artwork onto the cp. I read that some US-guys made the correct repro cp, but to be honest, im more afraid that someone scratches it off with his wristband from his watch.
The Marquee looks like overpainted and on a tiny spot, you can see some graphics shine through.

Btw I have too many projects  ;D
