Title: [Restoration] Wizard of Wor Reborn
Post by: Superully on August 13, 2009, 02:59:13 PM
following my  FIVE IN A ROW BERLIN ROADTRIP (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=819.0) where I picked up some fabulous classic games, I now have the time to restore those beauties to their former glory - one after another.

first off, Wizard of Wor

the good news is that the game is working, the bad news is that the condition of the cabinet and especially of the artwork is far from good.

first stop though: control panel

here's how it looks ...

closer ...

as you can see, the overlay is damaged and (as always) there's rust on the control panel itself. luckily, the screened front-artwork is in nice condition. some scratches here and there, but fortunately no rust. have a look

i'm removing the old overlay with the help of a heatgun, one of the best purchases this year by the way. i love that thing  :-*

the overlay completely removed

before sanding down, priming and repainting the panel, i'm protecting the front artwork. tricky, because the rust almost touches the art  :ghost:

after the "usual stuff" here's the panel's present condition. looking closely, one can see where the new paint has been applied, but it's way better than that rusty thing it was before. i don't want to apply a new overlay right now because i'm still waiting for maverick's plastic overlay spray thingy (whatever that is) to add an additional protective layer on top. for now, the control panel rests in peace  ;)

second stop: coin box

i was extremely impressed by the size of that thing when i first took it out of the arcade cabinet. it takes a lot of quarters to fill it up

inside the box, rust from where the coins once lay ...

you can almost see the currency that had been used ...

let's remove that rust!!!

i don't want to overdo work on the coin box, therefore i'm only straightening the edges of the box as good as possible, on top of that, i'm applying some layers of zinc spray to prevent the rust from "revisiting the coin box". stay off my land, you bastard

third stop: the cabinet

as i've said before, both the cabinet and the artwork are pretty rough, that's why i've decided to strip down the machine completey and start from scratch. judging from the following pictures, i guess this is a good choice!

would you have decided against repainting?

although i'm still convinced that this is the right thing to do, it almost breaks my heart to remove the sideart  :'(

the wizard has fallen

you can see exactly where the old artwork was

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2448/3816830837_9e34179d34.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3482/3816831197_a7412dab7e.jpg)

i'm preparing the cabinet for "sanding it down to the bone"

before

during

after

ladies and gentlemen, our employee of the month  :D by the way, the day after this enormous sanding job, i went to the home depot to buy some protective goggles. you should see me NOW ...  8)

after using a lot of wood filler on all those scratches and dents, the cabinet is ready for the next step: repainting!

the tools of the day

while applying the wood primer, something strange happened to one side of the cabinet: a "bubble" started to form in the middle of the cabinet's right side with a diameter of approximately 15 centimeters. i guess the cabinet must have had some water damage at that special spot before and when it came in contact with the wet paint it started to swell. i have no other choice than to "cut off" the bubble and to remove the swollen wood. this leaves a deep hole in the wood  :o

here's the wood i had to cut out

a lot of wood filler is needed to "close the wound", which in return means: the restoration process on the cabinet itself has to be halted!

to be continued ...

I can so imagine how you felt removing that side-art. While damaged beyond repair, it's still hurting to remove the original stuff.

This cab alone would be enough for me to drive over to your place and play :P

the restoration continues ...

this "bubble" is killing me  >:( it keeps cracking up again and again and again (and again), however slowly but surely work on "that b****" is advancing. i should be there pretty soon!

while i'm working on that problem child on and off, there are other sites that need fixing

fourth stop: the backdoor

the wood is broken off in various places, the lock has fallen out!

first some glue, then a lot of wood filler and the usual sanding job

the part where the backdoor slips into the groove of the cabinet to keep it in its place is also badly damaged ...

... that's why i'm cutting off the "surviving" wood ...

... only to replace it with a new wood ledge. looking good so far  :)

have a look at those grills from the backdoor - they shout out loudly the word "REPLACEMENT"

luckily, i hear their call  ;) to replace the old grills, i pick this up at a home depot

a closer look ...

in order to cut the metal grills properly, i'm "sandwiching" the metal plate between two wooden plates. this way, the metal doesn't get bent and the cuts are extremely accurate!

and again - a closer look

the result after some layers of black spray  8)

the four replacement grills are being attached to the backdoor with the help of a staple gun

back and front of the newly-painted backdoor - yeah baby!!!  :-*

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2528/3842309109_14f2177f68.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2642/3842308781_7f9d0a2a5d.jpg)

fifth step: cleaning of internal parts

before

after

to be continued ...

Post by: Superully on August 25, 2009, 04:19:39 PM

the restoration continues ...

FINALLY that water-damaged part has been "conquered". one can still see where the spot was, but as i've said before: each time i've applied wood filler / primer it broke up again in other areas off center, so i decided to go with a not-100%-solution and closed everything up as good as possible. after all, this is only one spot at the side of the cabinet and noone will recognize it.

so, without further ado - LET'S PAINT!!!

i have the cabinet's color matched to the color of the control panel frontart (which is NOT white by the way)

after two layers of primer and two layers of color on top, this is the result

step six: sideart

i have ordered some replacement sideart from phoenixarcade.com. here they are lying on the table

after a lot of re-positioning (the cabinet seems to be somewhat out of alignment), i'm applying the first sticker  :ghost:

looking good so far!

let's remove that premask to see what's underneath. oh no, beware the grasp of the wizard of wor

just P-E-R-F-E-C-T  :)

the other side doesn't go down as smoothly, because the second sideart wasn't perfect - there are some bad wrinkles which are visible clearly even before application. the sideart can be rolled down so that the wrinkles don't show, but after a while they "pop up" again. see for yourself

any ideas what to do? these are no air bubbles, they are wrinkles and might come from bad storage. i can roll those wrinkles down, but they won't stay down  :(  :'(

step seven: t-molding

another nice package from the states

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2605/3855355863_d401dc0514.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2638/3855353839_0d61a039f6.jpg)

it's great to use brute force from time to time  ;D

but sometimes you need to do the necessary cuts ...

let me put it like this: attaching t-molding is NOT the most favourite part of that hobby, however it has to be done and the results are rewarding and satisfying  :-*

to be continued ...

Ully, the Wizard of Restor ! :D

I can see a couple of bubbles there you naughty ;)

Easy for me to say, I've never applied a side-art before ! I do remember that I managed to get a bubble under my Centi CPO, but I left it and it was gone within a day or two....!

Personally, I'd contact Phoenix about those wrinkles. You payed good money for it, you are entitled for a perfect product, not a "90% OK" product.

the restoration continues ...

let's finish the control panel - i got a new overlay from phoenixarcade.com!

after  ;D

step eight: coin door

the original coin door had this slight structure which i wanted to recreate at all costs. some of you have been following my  coin door wrinkle effect thread (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=814.0) and finally - after weeks and weeks of searching - i found a firm which was able to do a good replica of that effect. it's not exactly like the original, but "there's some wrinkling going on"  ;) and i'm more than happy with the quality.

backflash: about three weeks ago i brought them 2 coin doors (wizard and pac) plus 2 frames. they said it might take a while because they have to wait for a bigger assignment to come in from someone else, otherwise it wouldn't be profitable for them, because changing colours for such small projects costs too much. so i waited and waited and waited ...

fast forward: this morning, i got a call  8) so i set out on a nice short roadtrip

arriving at the location - powder coating is the magic word!

i'm still surprised about the costs: removing the old colour from the coin doors and the frames plus powder coating those for items cost me 20 euros. that's damn cheap considering the fact that if i had to do this manually, it would take forever to sand the items down, prime and spray them.

off-topic: i also brought my centipede control panel with me and the boss of the firm himself removed the old paint for free  :spaceace:

ladies and gentlemen, the powder-coated WoW coin door  :-*

today everything came together nicely: ding-dong, a package from the states has arrived! sender: rich from thisoldgame.com

inside, some metal reproductions of the midway coin door plates. the quality is perfect, the only complain i have would be that the one for my WoW coin door is larger than the original, therefore it won't fit exactly into the space where it belongs.

That looks great !!! And that's not cheap, that's for NOTHING !!!! Geez, I payed 75 euro's for a coin door here and that was WITHOUT blasting. Honestly, this guy couldn't do it together with any other parts which of course greatly reduces costs but that is still very cheap.

I do have one tiny super-anal remark to make: why didn't you let them do the coin bezels and return cups as well ?

Oh and, it might be a good idea to mask you address on pics....

it looks like you did not put the midway sign really there, but photoshopped

in another way its too big, its going over the "bottomline" ...

for the rest it looks like new !  :spaceace:

what is really missing, is me behind this cab playing wizard of wor !  ;D

I think he simply laid it down on the coin door to show how it overlapped.

That's the thing between US and Euro coin doors. I got some Atari brand stickers from ThisOldGame.com and it turned out that the sticker area on the Euro coin door is a lot bigger than on the US coin doors. I do have the original sticker sheet with the manual that came with the cab, but I just can't make me pull that sticker of the sheet.... :D

that's not super-anal, that's right to the point: honest answer: i simply forgot about it  :-[ i'll take those smaller pieces with me the next time ...

yeah, i've seen you guys do that. are you doing this for protection of your privacy? perhaps i should think about that! what about car license plates?

don't know about that, but either the plate area is too small or the plate itself is to big - in both cases it won't fit  ;) i can't do anything but to leave it like that, or would you try cutting the metal?

Yes sir, the internet is great, but everyone is looking and you just never know. Not only could someone show up at your door when you're not around (if you catch my drift) but even worse, identity theft is really happening and you make it a bit too easy this way.

License plates, well over here you can find out some details about the car through an internet site, but nothing about the owner, unless your with the police or similar authorities of course....

Here's "my" car: (Not really mine, it's a lease-car from my company:
https://www.rdw.nl/Ovi/Paginas/Voertuiggegevens.aspx

I think in Germany license plates are personal, you take it from car to car right ? Over here they are fixed to the car for as long as it exists.

thx andré, you're right about the address thingy - i'll change the pics when i find the time! regarding license plates: when you get a new car, you also get a new plate, so if your car is gone, so is your plate. i've never heard of someone taking his old number with him, but then again: i'm no car geek (in fact: i find cars damn boring)!

The coin door in your WOW is the "standard" European coin door as used in so many games. The Midway plates that Rich makes are meant for US Midway coin doors like my Galaxian.

Looking at it....I'm beginning to wonder if you've got an original door there....

I have a feeling that there were never Euro-WOW's. Bally didn't "do" Euro cabs afaik. It may very well be a retro-fit......yikes....

Is there any hint in the cab to see where it was manufactured ?

Hey Ully,

FrizzleFries from the BYOAC forum asks what paint color code you used for the white on the WOW (because he just bought one too).
Don't think our euro-codes would do him any good but who knows....

Here's his thread:http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=96931.0

the restoration ends ...

ok, let's finish this before i reach the one-year mark :-[

when i got my wizard of wor, i was wondering why the marquee light wasn't working. most of the time it's either the tube or the starter which have to be changed, making this an easy fix. but this time it was a little bit different ...    nothing in there at all, someone "stole" the entire light fixture

after a lot of asking around, i found one which resembled the original fixture, had the correct measurements and was working

in order to spread the light more evenly, i decided to paint the wooden board of the light fixture in the same color as the cabinet - off-white. although the color is going to be invisible behind the marquee, it should help reflect the light!

on location

because the fixture is running on 230 volts, but it was only being fed with 110 volts, it had to be rewired. when andré was over for his wrong-way-round orange roadtrip, he traced the wires and by moving one wire to the 230V tab of the transformer, it lit up nicely! :)

don't you just love that marquee?

glows in the dark!

and finally - some shots of the finished cabinet

it's been a long, strenuous restorations with a lot of ups and downs, but in the end it was all well worth it: great-looking cabinet, eerie sounds and voices (the wizard speaks german), psychedelic video effects, fabulous gameplay - i couldn't be happier! as always, thx a lot for your nice comments and support. rest assured: the next restoration is just around the corner ... ;)

THIS RESTORATION IS OFFICIALLY DONE!!!

It is a LOVELY machine !!!!

Was brilliant to get the monitor running and have some plays on it !

The German speaking sounded like the bad Berzerk speech board by the way, I couldn't understand a word of it :D

If you ever (can't imagine) grow tired of it, I'll buy it from you gladly :P
