Title: Wreck it Ralph cabinets
Post by: jinxz on September 18, 2012, 06:19:25 PM
A while back i posted about the upcoming Disney movie Wreck it Ralph on the Nozomi forum. Being a fan of the movie before it even comes out i started reading about the movie and the way that Disney is promoting it with arcade cabinets. The first time that the movie was promoted was during the E3 in Las Vegas and they had the Fix it Felix arcade cabinet on display.

Everybody notices that it looks a lot like the Donkey Kong cabinets and after some research it came to light that Disney actually purchased some DK cabs from KLOV members and turned them into those Fix it Felix cabs.
So while I'm dying to own a DK cab i couldn't stand the fact that it was reduced to a mere ingredient of the FiF cabs. And i don't blame Disney because they simply needed donor cabs for the promotion of the movie and they also used other donor cabs eventually. But the whole thing triggered my thoughts of building the cabs for Disney from the ground up. So no donor cabs needed and all DK cabs can sleep peacefully.

The day before Eurocade i wrote Disney an email with my offer to build them these cabinets in the same style as the E3 show and give them the option of having the trailer on an LCD running in a loop or just the plain cabinet like on the E3.
It took a while and after a bunch of emails with a couple of contacts within Disney they asked me to give them a price. Sending out a simple email with a price is easy but i'd rather present the thoughts, ideas and price in person.
So last Thursday morning I got invited to the office of Disney near Amsterdam. Here is a picture that i took:

I drove up to the huge office building and introduced myself at the front desk. The lady told me that i had to use the elevator to go to the 19th floor. So i stepped into elevator with some other Disney employees and after they pressed 3 and 4 I went ahead and pressed 19. People looked at me and one guy actually said "ooooooh 19... your coming for an audience". Apparently it's the top floor for management only ;)
So we spoke about the movie and i pitched the thought of building them the cabinets from scratch and presented the idea to them.

***EDIT*** This part of the story is history for the ones that read it and a guess for the ones who didn't ;) ***EDIT***

Good to know, the files i got from RidicRick are EPS and PSD, and when i zoom deep, its rasters..

Anyway, not planning anything to build myself, but i like to have the graphics incase i get the urge for a new project..

perhaps a scale FIFjr  ::)

Oh lol i didn't even check them in Illustrator yet. I checked them in photoshop just to have a quick look. It is obvious that he used a program like vector magic to vectorize but nevertheless it looks decent.

I second that! I've never imagined that a company like Disney would get involved in a deal with an individual. I wish you all the best and sucess with the tasks ahead.

That's fantastic! A great opportunity to show to the public something really cool...an arcade cabinet!  ;)

I tried also something with my Tron during the Tron Legacy theater release, see this

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/tron/Tron_Legacy_Standee_0.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2470.0)

...but at the end, it wasn't possible to display the Tron cabinet in the Theater!  :-\ I'll try again if a new Tron movie will pop up!

I wish you a great success in that story! Whhooooooow... pressure! pressure! ... you work with Disney now! Impressive!  :)

No problem. I just need to be a bit further into the build to be able to show anything worth seeing ;)
Today i've cut the groove for the T-Molding. For the next cab i'm actually going to buy a better cutter. The cutter that I'm currently using has trouble to stay at a fixed depth so just cutting the groove will end up costing 150+ euro in tools ;) Worth every penny in the long run!

Hey Jinxz, how about making ONE playable version ? Would be nice for uhmmm, future arcade collector meetings

But then you have to contact the Disney guys and ask them what is running on the real working cabs in the US (NOT iOS and NOT flash version....there must be some dedicated hardware in there ;))  ;D ;D

unfortunately as  one can see Disney decided to wreck some old nintendo cabs for promo. The coindoors and the marquee holder are an inidicator for that.

extremely cool - finally a look inside a cabinet! where did you get the chance to do so and do you know what's going to happen with it after the film's run? honestly, i don't care that much that disney used nintendo cabs for that, because i think it's a great idea and effort to get an arcade machine out in the open and make it available to the public. i'm sure they didn't pick mint cabinets for their operations, but probably machines which were either empty or pretty much done anyway. i think they did a nice job on the fix it felix cabs - me like!!! :-*

Back on this.  8)

I would also like to own a dedicated Felix Fix Jr cabinet for me my daughter!  ;D
The IPAD version is fun, but NOT like the arcade version showed in the movie! The intro is missing, no Ralph voice 'I'm gonna wreck it!"....
By the time now, does the version used in their promo cabinets/in the movie is available somewhere? I've seen here & there many topics about that, but didn't find the answer yet?  ???

I CAN FIX IT, yeahh!  :P

Well, just a proof of concept for me now, but just configured a computer and check how easy it would be possible have an 'arcade like' setup.
First, the game plays great, same as the movie... I had to first check that first ... done!  :-* :-* :-*
After that, can it be played full screen, with vertical orientation... yes!!!
The next step for me will be to try with an arcadevga card, with the lowest resolution possible, and of course on a CRT screen  :P
Here's already few pictures before the AVGA/CRT test  ;)

Running it with command line arguments:

-rotate=90 fullscreen

will run it in fullscreen mode.

Also, you can create a "Screenshots" folder.  During the game while in FS mode, hit F7 to take screenshot.

note: (Fullscreen ONLY works when rotated 90 deg. for vertical displays)

Just tried with an Ultimarc AVGA2 (AGP), in order to display the game on a real arcade monitor (but for my test, I've used my usual Commodore 1084S which has the same specs than an arcade monitor : RGB / 60hz).
In order to have a beautiful scanline display, we need the lowest resolution possible for the game, but it's not possible to activate 'full screen' when the resolution is lowest than 800x600?

Oh, it already looks really good at this resolution (800x600) :

Nice scanline huh? But If the game would run in a lowest resolution, it would be even better! Because 800x600 is not a native resolution for an arcade monitor. Sure, the AVGA can 'handle' that, but it would be perfect (no flickering at all) in a very low resolution...

"-rotate=90 -fullscreen " will launch in full screen

Create a folder called "Screenshots" in the same folder as FixItFelixJr.exe.  Hitting F7 will create a screenshot (i believe they only come out right if it's rotated and in fullscreen).
Holding F6 will speed up the game.

ShellExecute("FixitFelixJr.exe", " -rotate=90 -fullscreen", @ScriptDir, "open", @SW_SHOW)

compile this with Autoit put the compiled exe in the game folder , then execute the compiled script (.exe) and the game will open full screen.

What is the official download site for this game ?

;D This is not a official version

Well, I must confess I'm a little bit confused... all these links look similar? Once unziped, they show always the same structure/content, like this

So, here's my questions :

Does this version belongs to the home made version programed by Sjaak, and the several links here & there lead to different released?

or

Does this version belong to the original disney arcade version?

There's a guy in the UK that's meant to have Fix it Felix working on a PCB, and you can convert a WC90 PCB to play it

I believe Jim Bagley is doing this.  He did the Manic Miner conversion on Pacman hardware:

sjaak  yore version  will be horizontal or vertical version?

It supports horizontal and vertical (in any resolution) and it will also support cocktail mode (screen flipping).

First of all, I'm new, so I apoligize for any bad spelling, and quetions that have been answered already.
I downloaded the the files from the dropbox mentioned in this thread, and I will have to say, wow, my hats off to the programers, this version of fix it Felix jr is EXACTLY what I invisioned when I saw the movie. I LOVE IT. Now, to my questions:

First, Is their a MAME ROM version of this floating around somewhere? I have a problem with the controls and my cab. Witch brings me to....

Second, is their a way to reprogram the controls to use diffrent buttons? I have a MAME cabinet that I put together a few years ago. half the controls in this version of fix it Felix jr will work with my layout, Such as the arrows for directional control, 1 and 2 for 1 and 2 players, but the X and Z for fix and jump, and c for coin don't work for my layout. (I am not using a Ipac, I hard wired my controls into an old USB Keyboard.) I would like to reprogram to fit my machine, if it is possible. I'm not asking for someone to do it for me, I'm asking how to do it myself, and if I fail, THEN AND ONLY THEN, would I request someone to try for me.

thanks,
Delamaize!

had chance to see the promo in person last weekend.

unfortunately as  one can see Disney decided to wreck some old nintendo cabs for promo. The coindoors and the marquee holder are an inidicator for that.

A question regarding the monitor used.

Does Disney used a VGA CRT or a 'classic arcade monitor' 15khz CRT into these FFJr cabs? (your blog mentions VGA CRT but I want to be sure of that).

I've been playing this (the Code Mystics version) a lot lately. Has anyone found a way to save hiscores?
I've tried a lot of locations for Scores.dat, but nothing is working for me.

VGA CRT....

Yes, sounds logical after all:It's the native resolution of the game. It can be displayed on a lo-res monitor, but must be with some kind of picture stretch then... must do few test first to figure out what will look the best! Oh, wait... still not have my Nintento project cabinet to start this... but it shouldn't be too long  :P
