Hey TRON fans.....did you know...........

There will be a new TRON arcade game in spring 2011 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

It _will_ be a pinball though, but I'm very exited about it anyway !!!! (Now I need to find some extra 4000 Euro...... ;) )

let me guess... stern ?  ;D

Great roadtrip, do fun to read  :-*

Great catch by the way.

As Bruno, I'm also a huge fan that funky "Samurai" Sauce.
Quite simple to imagine : Mayonnaise with hot pepper.
Don't abuse of it :)

edit : nice to see another 8080 midway board owner
maybe we will be able to make them work.

For glue sticky rest, go for alcohol (alcohol to burn? for home use)
it smells a bit but it's simply the best for that.

Progress of the adventure for the day, with aganim and his precious tools :
overall the one on the right, my chinese "velleman" doing the trick for my own soldering needs...

for those who didn't guess what it is, it's a unsoldering device, including an air motorised pump.

Until now, I didn't succeed in getting hands on a pcb pinout matching the one have. Aganim did :

http://www.classicgaming.cc/classics/spaceinvaders/manuals/MidwaySI_SIdelux_Pinouts.pdf

This one match a last with the pin number in front of us :

For the beginning, let's verify the fluo tube connector
Nice, we have the expected 110V AC. Let's move on with the power supply.

After some pain search to find the components involved, we have verifyed the 3 output of the voltage regulators. We have the expected 5V, 12V and -5V.
Measure without load, pcb disconnected.

It seems that on this side it's ok. Let's see with a load linked. Pcb connected.

We measured 5V on the pcb connector. 5V is exacly the same. No voltage loss.
At this time, without any doubt about the continuity , power supply to motherboard, we did not check -5V nor 12V on the motherbopard connector.

In fact we are a bit obsessed with the  "Power On reset" circuit part. After some check on tyhe pcb, we see that circuit is made of 2 transistors, 4125 and 4123, with a resistor and a capacitor. Explanation :

Let's check the resistor, with our unsoldering skills, this sould not be a problem :
I have chance, my multimeter includes a transistor tester, that I never used before, Time to make a try :

With datasheet of each transistor, one PNP, the other NPN, we check the range of work for each one. It's okay, they're both workking.
I can solder them again.

Arrived there, we don't want to bring the oscilloscope, to check if the "Power on reset" is generating it's pulse.
As we have gone a bit fast with the voltage check on the motherboard pcb, we decide to go this way first.

Note : It's a real pain to make measurement on the cabinet itself, You have to spend many time for a simple safe measure.

We check the wires on the connector that we have to measure.

No choice, we have to go with spike probe. Results : 5V is there, but alone. No 12V nor -5V

Let's verify continuity from motherboard connector to female PSU connector :
All right.

On PSU side, we verify from each regulator output to the male connector : all right too !

Damned, we check again from the motherboard connector to the PSu connector, male and female assembled. Power on. Still no voltage on the
motherboard.

WTF ? Where's the problem ?
On the female connector :

You don't see many thing on this picture, but 12V and -5V contacts are a bit larger than their neighbours. They should not make contact anymore.
I'm a bit surprised about that.
Even after contect cleaning spray over the connector, Impossible to get any continuity from the regulators outputs to the motherboard connector.

It's now dark outside, We won't go much more forward today. We're a bit perplexed about those anoying miscontacts.
Also we didn't see anything that could allow us to remove the pin inside the connector.

nevemind, it will be for next time...

completly missed that road trip when it was published.

Me too,
you had some good mitigating circumstances...

J'espère que tout va bien se passer dans le mois à venir pour Nunette.  :-*
OOps : I hope everything will be fine for Nunette these coming months.  :-*

Bruno, serious things are coming, you'll end up with your childish hobbies  :D
Congratulations to both of you, mate.

Pierre.

« on: October 24, 2010, 07:52:10 PM »
nice roadtrip and a great catch - pole position is one of the all time classics. my bet is it ain't working though, right? PP is a pain in the ass when it comes to reliability!

btw, why did you post your roadtrip report twice?
twice, in fact i only updated the first page. I always to that with "episode" topic, I sum up everything in the first post.

pole position was stocked working, according the seller. I can trust him.
despite this, many things can happen while resting so in a garage.
Yesterday, seeing the battery lcated on one of the game pcb was ins a state where
acid attack was closed to begin. But the pcb are still in good shape.
some previous fix ghas alreday occur, as there are some GND / VCC wires soldered around the pcb.
I needed to cut theme before I remove the pcb.
It seems also that one of the first thing is to make the PSU work properly removing the auto voltage check
that often brings the psu to burn.
While looking at the game pcb edge connector, it seems that it already happend in the past.
and this should explain the several customs wires around the pcb.

last time I came for the space invaders, we start the cab, and w get a correct picture but with a faulty game.
We'll see that in time :)

here there are, scr33n...

It's automn, without nay doubt, weather doesn't seem to be with us today :

We're on 2010, october the 23rd. It's about 10 o'clock, ready for action.  :-*

Go ahead to catch my partner for this road trip, like last time, it's "Une ombre noire." (a black shadow).

half an hour later, i'm on Ronald's parking to pick him up :

Another 1/2h later, time for lunch, so that we can forget about this.

I know "Ombre" was a juge Mayonnaise fan, but not at that point...

We're now ready for the afternoon, time for new adventures :

Really cool, weather is gonna be nicer as we drive. We reach the "Vosges" and the weather is really sunny.

So far we're almost blind because of the sun  ;D :

Driving with that weather in such beautiful automn colored montain lanscape is a real pleasure.

During our way we follow some strange vehicules...

We reach the round point of the "wee-wee" pause :

Damned, I've been caught by the patrol

Ad time for our sponsor :

And we're back on track :

We aren't that far now, and overall it will even be faster as a new road is now open.
We couldn't take it 2 weeks ago. We will earn 10 or 15 minutes easliy.
My GPS is now completily lost.

We are now arrived. "Carotte" already prepared some nice goodies for the goal of this road trip.
A spare bezel and user and technical documentations about the pole position cabinet

As usual, we decide to throw away the boring business : loading the cab in the car :

Pole position cab is a bigger cab that the space invaders is. It's a bit tricky to load.

Pfff, The door is closed, it's the most important. Notice the custom small wheels, as an attemps to make the cab self moving :

Now that everything is over before we go, We have some time to spend in the "kitchen garden of the Carott" :
Here the workshop, in an almost panoramic view :

Heyyyyy, wait a minute, You won't pass over the "discs of tron" cab like you did last time ?
No, no, here are some additional pictures (unfortunately we did not move the cab :

Let's go now in the game room :

close to the door,

a nice small Sega Aero City and a classic sega naomi universal cabinet.

Reste of the row featuring a sega rally upright and a hang-on upright cab :

At the end of the row, you find a lost world cab and a super hang-on deluxe :

near you have a  sega touring car twin :

We finish this corner with a Library full of pcbs of all kind (almost only 80ies classics)
Really impressive

What can you find on the other side of the entrance door ?

pac mania and rolling thunder...

blasteroid and roadblaster...

Rampage and creatures of the black lagoon (straight in front of it)

Is it enough for you ? What about the middle of the room :

A babyfoot (don't know the name outside France) with a cult "New Look" magazine from 1982 found in a Space Invaders cabinet :  :D
this kind of magazine are for male audience only. It includes some X-rated pictiures but not porn. It was famous during the 80ies
as famous people were posing naked for the magazine  ;D

Un massive sega thunder blade :

And a amazing out run deluxe with its galaxian cocktail :

Last time we came, we were frustrated as the speed gear was blocked in hi position, so that we couldn't reach the check points  >:(

This time, as we had some time to spend, "Ombre" replace the broken switch :

Small video  starring "une ombre noire"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t83-LB4CLI

Oh, we already have to go, we have some road to drive, do let's go :

Few hours later, we're almost arrived :

Welcome committee :

Pictures of the beast :

Thanks to all the people involved that made this road trip possible
Ombre, aganim, carotte, miss carotte (Lovely cookies) et all his family.

I hope this time there will be enough pictures  8)

Gee did you try the paint on the motorbike in front of the shop ?  ;D ;D ;D

could recognized that fluorescent ceiling blue lights between thousand, now  ;D
And it's always so damned loud and noisy.
You can stand there more than half an hour, just beacsue of that.
By the way thanks for the video.

Those modern "remake" of sega classics are a bit strange, compared with the dedicated, motored original cabinets.
