Title: >>> Great "new" 1982 arcade video material on-line now !!! <<<
Post by: level42 on December 28, 2010, 12:47:43 AM
As a belated x-mas present, I am extremely proud and happy to be able to offer you classic arcade addicts some great video material from the early 80‘s !!!

Below you will find a documentary that was made by and for Dutch national television and was aired on january 11, 1982.
The broadcasting company AVRO has given permission to publish this on the internet in a streaming form. Please do not publish this on Youtube or likewise sites or we may get in trouble !

I translated everything said as best as I could. There will definitely be some “strange” translations but this is what I could do and as long as you understand what is said I think that should be fine.

Some notes:

1)The very first part (until 0.01.02) is NOT from the “Driester” documentary but from another (much later) TV item
2)The “Driester” (=ThreeStar) documentary starts with host Ruud ter Weijden talking with Star Raiders playing behind him. This is a brilliant game (with a lot of history) on the Atari 8 bit homecomputer.
3)The guy interviewed at [00.12.00] is R. Hommerson. Hommerson arcade(s) still exist to this day at Scheveningen, The Netherlands !!
4)[00.16.27] The man from the Dutch Gaming Machines association (VAN) is speaking about legal issues in the arcade business in front of at least 3 bootleg machines !! :)
5)I made a list with all the games that I manage to ID with timecodes, I will upload this ASAP.....there sure were some treasures in there !

HUGE thanks go out to “Gyruss”  and “Etienne”, without them this wouldn't have been possible at all   !!!

Check out the videos here:

Arcade42 (http://web.me.com/andre.huijts/Arcade_42/Welkom.html)

Note: For now, the video's are only available in Flash format. This means they won't be playable on all (mobile) devices. I hope to add H.264 versions of these videos soon, which will offer better quality at a lower bit-rate and lower processing load.

Great! Those kids with caps are super cute!
Three questions:
- Who is the presenter? His voice sounds familiar.
- What is the computer they show the games on at the end?
- Did the law become more liberate later? When I was a kid, most arcades were played by 10 year old kids too at snackbars and camp sites.

Hey Blanka, did you _read_ the notes in my first posting ?
First two questions are answered there :)

Anyway, he's Ruud ter Weijden (it's even on the intro title....). He used to do Studio Sport and RTL4 sports programs and also car programs.
The computer Harumpf, that's the beautiful beast Atari 800 of course ! :D

I'm the proud owner of a (pretty rare) PAL version Atari 800. It's built like a tank !!!

Well there may be laws about it but I'm not sure what the actual rules are. (Money) gambling is pretty restricted though (only over 18).

Don't think there is coming more, at least not from me.
The other stuff is just slot-machines. Too bad a lot of material hasn't been saved, like Level42 his Atari championship.   >:(

I did not try to ID the pinballs in there, I have not enough knowledge of those machines....

Theres's some rare beasts in there, try to spot them :) :
Fantasy
Speed Freak
MayDay
Red Baron cockpit
Space Tactics (EM game)
Dribbling (I know a member here who has one ! :) )
Side Trak (Exidy, this one has a real bell inside !!)
Monkey Kong
Fitter

btw I never knew Gorf was available in Europe

There was a Gorf in our amusement park's arcade in Budapest, as I remember it was around 1983-84.
Btw. nice video and great job, thanks for golden trio to let this happen! ;D

I think I've seen Gorfs back in the day. Then again, Hommerson Scheveningen was an arcade I visited every now and then in those days (whenever my parents felt like going to "the beach"...) I still go there about twice a year !

Well, let's face it. Most of them are probably long destroyed. Then again, I always pretend that my SW cockpit is the one that used to be there in Scheveningen ;) ;) (Shame that it isn't on _this_ video..... :( )

Of course there is 0 proof about that.

And let's imagine that that Speed Freak that recently got sold was the one on that video :)

By the way, I'm translating the next video as we speak. This one is probably more of interest for the pinball fans, but it's still loads of fun for all classic arcade fans.....

Great....but I first transcript all the Dutch, then translate.
Best way to do it like this.

It's sometimes amazing how "difficult" Ruud makes his sentences (in a try to appear more intelligent maybe ? :) )

I think I've seen Gorfs back in the day.

I've seen several. Heck, I own one with Belgian Franc coin acceptors :)

Most games were in Europe, just not in the same density as the US, I even remember an environmental discs of Tron in Brussels.

Sorry no. Didn't have time this weekend (we were away) and the weeks before....not too much time either....

Also, my motivation got a big blow when I discovered that
a) the stuff is already on youtube (the Xenon voice stuff)
b) the material is simply a "redone" documentary by (I guess) the BBC. However, we have source material in the best quality available and I think we have the complete item so there is still reason to do it but it's not on my top priority list at the moment.

The temporary storage near "de kuip" will be closing it's doors soon. I need to move some rubbish out of there (including an Exidy Circus cabinet) AND move the Video Pinball to my gameroom. That means I need to clean up the gameroom A LOT....so I'm going to be very busy next week.....sorry guys, but it will surface sooner or later...

Hold your horses, you have an extra 4 weeks.  :) Wanted to PM you about it, but this will do also. Now you have some extra time (to work on the SW monitor  ;) :D )

Jeez, still have to do this...

Sorry...

BUT......today I solved a riddle that puzzled me for a long time. Well, not really a riddle, but simply one of the cabs that I failed to ID on that video (keeps bugging me).
The reason is mostly because I actually remember playing that game.

It is the game that is showing movie tracks of (model) warships on a sea. You have to blast them out of the water with a huge gun with a big red button on the back.
You can see it in action on video from 07:14

Today I was at a retro-gamers fair in Apeldoorn (almost 100% console/homecomputers, but still very nice) and was browsing through a book (in French) about one of Nintendo's designers (sorry, forgot his name). It showed all the history about Nintendo games and there....at a certain page I see it ! THAT IS THE GAME I FAILED TO ID !!!!

A huge red cabinet....that IS it...: Nintendo Battle Shark !!!!

It indeed uses (pieces of) 16mm film to show the images. It's almost completely mechanical.

I was completely unaware that this was a Nintendo game !!! However, a long time ago I do remember reading about someone finding one of these huge red Nintendo machines with film projection, but I never made the link to the game I remembered.

The KLOV description is wrong by the way, it mentions you have to shoot at airplanes, but in Battle Shark it is boats only. I did see another (even larger) likewise game that _did_ seem to be about shooting planes in that same book....

If anyone can tip me what book it was....I'd love to own it (in fact there were two, one in French, one in English they looked about the same, but one was about the designer, the other about the history of Nintendo.

Anyway, however trivial this may be, I really was so exited to finally find this HAHAHA :)

The cool factor is that (without me ever realizing of course) the very first Nintendo product I ever played was.......Battle Shark !!!!

Bingo that's it ! Thanks Laschek ! I actually remember that it was on E-bay then !
Shame the thread suddenly stops.

It's such a remarkable machine technically ! F.I. that sound disc, so simple but much smarter than a tape drive !
The normal sound is on the film it self (optically) but the explosions are on that disc.

Very cool machine !

Just watched the video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35jouIXY0zA

Because of the projection there's a very bright blur, pretty sure you don't see it like that for real.

Interesting, this one has the airplanes that KLOV mentions ! The one on the Driester video has the boats like I remember them. Of course, all it took to change the game was to change the films ! ;)

What I wonder is how collision detection info was done ! I mean, somewhere, the machine has to know where the target is and if you are hitting it.... I do remember that it worked rather poorly, at least I remember thinking that I hit it, but it wouldn't register the hits...maybe I was just too young, maybe it was just a center spot of the boat or something you had to hit....

At closer inspection, its just a converted cabinet with a i-cade 60in1 board connected to a TFT panel..  :-\

Well at least it has classics..

It looks like this has a 25"or bigger monitor inside..

Isn't that a joke..... that side-art doesn't even have a (Namco) copyright notice while this _is_ a Namco released game !

I still wonder why the guys from Phoenixarcade decided to put that Namco copyright on it....

Bela, only a couple of years ago this was still a great arcade and a big one too. It housed 3 pinballs, a full set of the full moving latest version of Outrun (4 cars, 2 players per car), it had that Plane flying simulator game with 3 screens (forgot the name), a couple of HOTD versions, the modern version of AfterBurner Deluxe etc. etc. etc.

They changed location. The original location can be seen in the material that Pieter found (Driester), one of the shots where they go over the HUGE row of cabs is from there.
Now there's a HEMA store there and they moved to a much smaller location one flower lower.

Yes it's still there but to me it lost almost everything that made it great even it's modern-day variant a couple of years ago. I actually asked if they were interested in selling the Ms.Pac/Galaga combo when they were still in the original location and they said: no way ! So I guess it was still a good earner.
