Title: 2010 Monitor Group Buy (through Mitchomagic) - The arrangement
Post by: ckong on July 16, 2010, 09:44:33 AM
I made this fresh topic so we can concentrate on the monitor group buy.

So,

- we have someone who is willing to collect the monitors and get them to the South coast of England (near Portsmouth) > Rav  :spaceace:
- we have two guys who volunteer to pick them up at Rav's place > André and Pieter  :spaceace:
- if needed we have a storage room in Rotterdam  :spaceace:
- we have a van > falcon NL  :spaceace:

Now we only need to take care of the following issues:

1. What is the price per monitor when they will be picked up at Rav's?
2. Definitve commitment from people (numbers), so Rav knows how many he has to pick up for us
3. Payment of monitors (when and to whom), I suppose in advance
4. A van and date to pick them up. Maybe we need to rent a van, better not though.
5. Distribute the monitors further on mainland Europe

Let's devote this topic only to the group buy.

Please mention your interest (again) in this topic, I will collect them in the following list.

This is the list, with numbers, of people who have committed themself to buy monitors from Mitch's contact:

ckong (Erik) - 5  3  PAID
gyruss (Pieter) - 1  PAID
Level42 (André) - 3  PAID
Atarimania (Franck) - 4  PAID
Ravage - 5  PAID
Speleo_de (Andreas) - 5
falcon NL (Floris) - 1  PAID
Thwocker (Marco) - 4  PAID
hatster (Kev) - 5  PAID
chrischris - 2  PAID

Total number of monitors defintely confirmed (up to now):
Mainland Europe: 28
UK:                           5

I suppose that people are able to participate until Rav is able to pick them up, or until payment has to be made. Or until there are no monitors left.  :D  The only one still missing from the other thread is Brry71 who expressed interest for 2 monitors. I suppose it is pretty safe to calculate him in, but to be sure I did send him a PM earlier today.

Free monitors (10 available):

Welcome Andreas, and of course you are allowed to join. The more the better. Most people know you of course, but some maybe not. Perhaps a little introduction here: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?board=3.0 ?

OK, back on topic. Total number of monitors now is 26.  ;D

Ully is very interested in the used monitors, which are free of charge. Is there more interest? Oh, the monitors are free of charge, but shipping is not of course. I suggest to divide all extra costs equally over the monitors, so each free monitor will bear the same transport costs as the other monitors.

shipping? isn't rav going to pick the monitors up? if we can't find anyone to pick them up from rav's place, i could hire that van again i used for my first england roadtrip and pick them up personally. could drop them off in belgium for example or take a detour to the netherlands. the rest i'd take with me for myself and andreas. of course, we would have to share costs. just a suggestion in case we can't get anything else to work! school holidays are approaching fast, then i have a lot of time on my hands ;D

shipping? ......

...........of course, we would have to share costs.

That is what I meant. Rav will make costs for us and there will be costs involved picking up the monitors at Rav's place and bring them to mainland Europe. So all extra costs besides the purchase price should be divided equally over all monitors, including the free monitors.

For example: if we buy 21 monitors for mainland europe and bring along 10 free monitors, Rav will have to transport 31 monitors for us to his place. This will cost him X. Then someone (you, or André and Gyruss) will have to pick them up and bring them somewhere on mainland Europe (fi. Rotterdam). This will cost Y (gas, perhaps van hire, chunnel fair, beverage etc.)

The additional (transport) costs per monitor will then be (X+Y)/31. Anyway, that's how I would calculate it.
Title: Re: 2010 Monitor Group Buy (through Mitchomagic) - The arrangement
Post by: Superully on July 16, 2010, 04:04:46 PM
i wouldn't divide it by the number of monitors, i would divide it by the number of buyers, because it doesn't matter how many monitors we're bringing over - a van is a van and it doesn't cost more or less no matter how many monitors we load up.

That would make the price for people who just want one monitor a lot higher than for people who want more (like me, 4/5) so I'm all for it !  ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, I think Erik's suggestion is the most fair one of the two.

i have to disagree with you guys, but not because i'm interested in more than one monitor. if we were to SHIP those over, i'd say divide it by the number of monitors, because in this case weight would matter, but a pickup ... ? i can't see a logical reason for NOT dividing the costs equally!

Its not a problem for me to get a van for free (gass isnt but you get the idea). Dont know if it can hold 31 monitors because i have no idea of the "size" of the boxes.

WOW, that's great, we have a van for free. Thanks very much, I will update the first post immediately  :spaceace:

For the size of the boxes, Mitch could ask the seller for that, but you can get an idea if you check the photo here: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1480.45

I don't see the difference between having it shipped or the costs of picking up ?

Costs is costs.

Let's say that we end up with 10 guys wanting monitors.
Let's assume a rough 500 euro (based on nothing) costs.

Now If Gyruss wants 1 monitor, he would have to pay 50 euro costs.
If I buy 5 monitors, I also pay 50 euro costs, so for each monitor only 10 euro costs ???

That's just weird IMHO...

I agree with André, it's far more honest and in the community spirit if everone pays the same amount for their monitors, regardless the number of monitors they buy.

About the used monitors, I spoke with Ully about that and he suggested more or less the following: there are about 10 used monitors and about 10 participants (up to now). Everyone can show their interest for a used monitor (which Ully and Gyruss already did). When the deal is rounded up, we know how many people want a used monitor. Then we divide (I love to divide  ;) ) the number of monitors by the number of people who want one. If someone only wants one, or two, like Gyruss, his surplus can go to Ully, as he stated that he will take any remaining used monitor.

D'accord?

Oh, remember that those used monitors have several sizes, which will be a surprise for you.

Post by: Superully on July 16, 2010, 06:59:18 PM
puh, this is getting difficult ;)

still don't agree with you guys! when i order something online, say books, i usually have to pay the same postage, no matter whether i order one book or four. now in our case the books are the monitors and the postage is the gas. we would need a van no matter how many monitors we take (well, at least if we take more than say 6), so to me there's no difference at all. in fact, we could even start arguing that by getting together to make this bulk buy, we get a better price for the whole bunch of monitors. doesn't this mean in the end that the guys who take more monitors should get a discount depending on the amount of monitors they take? as i've said: we COULD argue like that, but i don't want to, because i tend to stick to simple maths: divide everything equally and be done with it. but that's just my two cents!

what do the other guys think?

... i tend to stick to simple maths: divide everything equally and be done with it.

That's exactly what we think THUS dividing the costs per monitor. It's simply not fair to let some guys pay a large amount if they just want one.

Even though Superully's idea would be beneficial for me, I don't feel like it is an honest way to do it.

I say we vote for it (although I feel like we are cutting pieces of a cake that still has to be baked):

Great offer with regard to your truck, Kev, let's see how this can work out.

Could we get some details about the price? Must be sharp with such a bulk buy.  :) And it would be nice if Rav could give us an estimation about the share of his transportation costs per monitor (most honest way as discussed earlier: dividing all transport costs from the seller to Rav's place equally per transported monitor, so that everybody pays the same amount for a monitor).

Mitch, as you seem to be the intemediair between us and the seller, could you put up a payment system, and instruct us how and when the seller has to be paid? Preferably over Paypal I suppose. I don't know how the others feel about this.

Most of us do, so let democracy rule. :)

we haven't even heard from a lot of people on this, just 4. so i only need a couple more votes ;D

seriously, guys, if everyone took one monitor you'd split the cost, but if suddenly one person would add an additional monitor to his order and therefore buy two, you would suddenly charge him extra for that? i simply don't get it, i really don't! those monitors have to be picked up anyway, no matter whether it's one or 500 - THE COSTS STAY THE SAME! as i've said: if it's only a couple of euros i don't care, but if the guys with a larger amount of monitors suddenly have to pay 100 euros more, i might even consider getting out of this deal. the reason why we could be getting those monitors cheaper is the fact that we're getting together for a bulk deal, so those guys who only take one monitor definitely come out on the winning end of this. we could also take the other route, like the more monitors you buy, the cheaper they get (for example this is how it's done when you're shopping for electronic parts on rs online). i just don't see why the guys with the larger amount of monitors should be punished while the guys with just one only gain from that!

that's why i'm STILL voting for an equal split - easiest and fairest!
Title: Re: 2010 Monitor Group Buy (through Mitchomagic) - The arrangement
Post by: ckong on July 29, 2010, 10:56:22 AM
Boy, this is getting complicated.

Ully, let's for instance say that there were 2 buyers, you for 1 monitor and someone else for 37 monitors. Would you then still want to bear 50% of the shipping costs? I don't think so.  :) You would probably say something like: "Hé man, you don't mind taking one extra monitor with you, do you? I mean, it's no difference for you because you have to ship the 37 monitors anyway."  ;)  No offence meant of course.

I did some math. If we would do it the way that I suggested, you, with your 3 monitors, would pay 5% shipping (to Rav's place) per monitor extra as to opposite your way. This will be less than € 0,50 per monitor extra (based on a certain estimated shipping costs). However, in your way, the guys who bought for instance only one monitor will have 216% extra shipping costs, which means € 17 extra per monitor (based on the same shipping costs)

I certainly know what is more fair.  ;)

I rest my case.

i would agree if those heavy monitors WERE to be shipped, but they aren't! but as i've said before: if it's only a couple of euros, i don't care, i simply don't see the logic in it, but you don't see the logic in my way of thinking either, so we're even ;). guess this is one of those dutch - german thingies again we simply have to live with ...

just out of curiosity: did andré divide the postage of our bulk bob roberts order by the weight of the items each individual guy ordered? "ok, X bought two buttons, so that's just 1.38 perc cent of the postage, Y got the heavy power supply, that's 45,93 per cent, Z ...". i don't think so, because in the end weight did not matter!

Ully, you keep saying you don't mind, but you keep bringing it up so it's clear that you DO mind.

IMHO this was a discussed and passed station. I feel that by bringing it up again you are endangering the whole deal (I mean if I would be Rav or Mitch, I'd feel pretty uncertain about those mainland Europe guys who don't seem to agree even on these DETAILS.

Ully, this is a VERY RARE chance to get brand new Old Stock monitors. Don't endanger the deal please.

Of all the guys who spoke up, everyone seemed to agree with "our" plan. So far you are the only one with a different opinion.

Something else to consider ( in the spirit of this being a group-buy in the arcade scene ):

We are (hopefully) buying NOS monitors. That is: New OLD Stock. Old means that we _could_ have issues with some of them right out of the box. I don't say it is LIKELY, but it _is_ possible.

Wouldn't it be fair to reserve (some of) the free monitors for the unlucky fellows who end up with a non-working new monitor ? I do realize that not all of them are 19" and we also do not know the situation about these monitors, but there could be at least a couple working....

@andré: i simply brought this up again because of erik's remark with "most honest way" and if only 4 persons out of 10 - 12 speak their mind, i don't think that's the majority.

but, for the last time, if it's only a matter of a couple of euros, i don't care, because i don't want to endanger the monitor group buy! that's it!!!

It's like voting for a government, not everybody votes, but of the ones who do vote, the majority makes the call.  :)

Anyway, glad that this is out of the way. We now have a total of 36 monitors in this group buy, which is great. And I like André's idea about the reservation of the free monitors.

I hope that Mitch get back to us soon with prices and payment details, and that Rav is able to arrange transport (and inform us about the costs and the way he wants to be paid).

Mitch and Rav, it's up to you guys now.  :)

Is it too late to be part of this deal?  ::)
Otherwise I'm up for two monitors...
If that's helping: I can easily borrow a mercedes vito (I'd remove the seats) and I'm totaly OK to drive to Holland and bring back a bunch of monitors in Belgium for anybody who would be interested. Let me know, thanks already!

Oeps, I totally forgot to PM you back chrischris, sorry for that.

the deal is in a (very) slow pace lately, don't know why. But if it still materializes, you can have two of mine, which leaves me three.

And your transport offer is great, thanks.

No problem, I have all the time.  ;)
Just let me know if you need any transportation, I think I can fit at least 8 of these monitors in the van, hopefully more depending on the size of the boxes.
Thanks a lot for letting me have some of your monitors ckong!

Ok girls and boys.

Have been talking to Rav,it looks like for him to come over and collect the monitors will cost to much.So I have recived a quote to get them delivered to him.the cost for the delivery is about 400euro,depending on the final number of monitors .The only downside to this is that he will not take any monitors that dont have boxes,so the free monitors are out,as i dont have boxes to suit 10 monitors.

So going forward with this I will have to collect the money and pay the opp,Rav wount be collecting the money as it is to much hassel with his bank to recive euro payments.

I have copied the list from the first post,so can all those listed please confirm how many monitors they want so I can make a final list and sort out cost etc

Monitor cost 150euro
Delivery 400ish devided on the final number of monitors delivered.

I have to get moving on this as I am away soon. When everbody has confirmed what they are getting,I will send each person a PM with payment details etc.

So roll up and state your claim  :)

ckong (Erik) - 5
gyruss (Pieter) - 1
DarthNuno (Bruno) - 1
Level42 (André) - 4 (maybe 5)
Superully (Ully) - 3 (maybe 4)
Atarimania (Franck) - 4 (maybe 5)
Ravage - 5
Speleo_de (Andreas) - 3
falcon NL (Floris) - 1
Thwocker (Marco) - 4 (maybe 5)
hatster (Kev) - 5

Total number of monitors (up to now):
Mainland Europe: 31 - 35
Title: Re: 2010 Monitor Group Buy (through Mitchomagic) - The arrangement
Post by: Superully on September 08, 2010, 10:55:52 PM
with the free monitors taken out of the equation, the delivery costs per monitor and the final price being 150 euros for one monitor i'm out. whoever wants my monitors can have them, but this is too much for my blood at the moment.

thx for the efforts though, i wish this would have happened some other time!
Title: Re: 2010 Monitor Group Buy (through Mitchomagic) - The arrangement
Post by: ckong on September 09, 2010, 12:21:43 AM
.... the delivery costs per monitor and the final price being 150 euros for one monitor i'm out.

We always knew that the price per monitor would be € 150: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1480.30

and delivering 38 monitors to Rav for € 400 is only aprr. € 10 per monitor.

So price per monitor at Rav's place is about  € 160. there are a few volunteers with a van to pick up the monitors at Rav's. I guess that this will not be more than another € 10 per monitor max. So total transport costs per monitor from Ireland to Mainland europe is € 20 max.

I don't think that this is unreasonable and is as expected since we started this. So, no surprise. But if there are more getting out of the deal, then the pricetag for the remaining people will increase of course.

Post by: Superully on September 09, 2010, 07:30:43 AM
as i've said, erik, it's not just that, it's also the lack of the free monitors, the nintendo bulk deal coming in between and the fact that that i'm basically still out of work and won't get paid in full until the end of october. this might be difficult to understand, but as i've said, right now i just can't get those monitors - that's what i call "bad timing". i don't think the prices for the monitors are going to change, it was 150 from the beginning and noone knew how many we were going to take, that's why i was hoping they would get cheaper the more we take ...

Ully, you don't have to defend your decision, I respect it of course.  :) The monitor group buy started quite some months ago, first through Level42 and then through Mitchomagic, and during this period things can happen which may people force to decide to withdraw. I completely understand that. In fact, I was glad that I could shove two of my 5 monitors to chrischris (see above), also because of financial reasons. And I was also hoping for a discount because of the bulk buy, but alas, didn't happen.  :-\

Let's wait and see who still is joining here.

I'm also hoping that the payment could wait for 2 weeks. It's a very expensive month for me.  >:(

You do realize that the monitors will have to be picked up in England, at Rav's place, do you? We also have already some other volunteers to pick up the monitors, Level42 and Gyruss, and a guy with a van, falcon NL.

I adjusted reply #2. In bold you will see the definitely confirmed numbers so far. Some people still have to confirm.

Hi,

In fact I have the same question as I'm also a TOTAL NOOB.. Can I use these monitors in a Donkey Kong, Atari System1, Crystal Castles.. cabinets ?

I can't go to rav for picking them but Belgium is fine :)
Title: Re: 2010 Monitor Group Buy (through Mitchomagic) - The arrangement
Post by: level42 on September 10, 2010, 12:30:24 PM
Well for an original Donkey Kong board the video is inverted. You will have to "re-invert" it somehow. There are several tricks for this:
1) a separate inverter PCB
2) if the parts are on the PCB, you can "undo" the inversion
3) use "inverted" color PROMS

I like the last option best, but I have to look into it how to do it again (read it a long time ago). I can't burn those PROMs but I know someone who can.

Crystal Castles is a standard resolution game so you can use these monitors without any problems.

Okay, so option 1 means buying something like this: http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=NININVAMP
Is this plug and play??

I have got the 4 board dk pcb (still don't know it it works, going to test it tonight), do you happen to know if the parts are on this pcb?

Sorry about those questions, i don't have any idea.

Ah, OK. No, you're not missing anything. Only thing is that andré and Pieter might pick up the monitors and Falcon NL might have a van available. I hope they do of course.  :) And I have a storage in rotterdam available for at least until mid November.

Damn I long for one, honestly. I think I will slip in a "bonus" for me 1 time in a weekend into the diet. Else it's going wrong and I may leave the enlightened path.... ;D ;D ;D

I had the pleasure of meeting Gyruss' girlfriend and she was by far the most enthusiastic female about our hobby that I've met so far, so I'm not that sure if I would be the better travel companion for Gyrus.  You're a lucky man Gyruss !  ;D

I have to do some "money" fighting with my "girlfriend" first to decide how many monitors I can get. I think at least 3 maybe 4.

Perhaps because the sellers wants to get rid off them? He did already sell some and he might sell more if we wait longer. Besides, this is already in preparation for some months now, people knew what was coming and one could have put aside some money for it. It's called saving.  ;)

And I'm sure in two months something else is up, another great deal came along that one couldn't refuse.  ;D

Hi,

Im in the south of Spain so a bit of a pain compared to the rest of you guys.  I have a friend who lives here and drives back to the uk regularly in his van.  I was going to get him to fetch my monitors directly from Rav.  If anyone is interested i could probably get him to pick up as many as required and get them to dieppe or calais.  it would save whoever has / hires a van driving over on the boat / tunnel and all the way to Ravs. I dont know what he would charge for this, if any interest i will put it to him and ask.

Cheers,

Kev.

Depending on the costs, this sounds like a good idea to me, I would gladly pick up my 3 monitors at Calais (Dieppe is a bit too far) with my car. Maybe I could even take a few extra with me for others, splitting the petrol costs.

@Mitchomagic, what are the measurements of the boxes?

@André, I keep track of the payments in reply #2, based on the posts of Mitch. Your payment and Chris' payment are probably done/on its way also. This only leaves speleo_de to pay.

@kroustibat, that could be a good location for some of us, I however will pick up my monitors at Calais so that I can bring them to my storage in Rotterdam.

I can borrow a Mercedes Vito at my work.
I'm not sure how many monitors could fit in there but if that's helping anybody I could pick up several of them (at least mine) in Calais (2h20 from my place) and store them at my place (near Brussels) for a limited time. Let me know...

If possible it would be much easier if the Calais meeting happens during the week and not during the weekend.
Anybody has an idea of the size of one monitor box? So that I can let you know how many I can fit in my van.
No problem for taking and storing Gyruss + André + Erik's stuff at my place near Brussels.
I was planning on visiting Gyruss during the month of December, hope it's OK for you to wait until then.
We're almost there  :) ...but who is bringing the monitors from England to Calais?

I didn't know exactly what journey from where to where which people were going to make, so that's why I formulated it so broad. If possible, I'd like to take part in your trip. As for picking them up from your house, I'm sure we can work something out for all the monitors going to Holland.

I'm sure this will work out don't worry... but if I have to stop for a game (or two) at each of these places, I'd better plan a 5 days roadtrip  ;D

also - do we have any idea of a date roughly when the monitors will ship to and arrive at Rav's ?

I don't mind driving to Rav's place (there are worst places to visit  ;)) but this would mean renting a bigger van and paying for the ferry/shutttle + my gas.

IF I decided to get another cab (or two) from rav, i could rent a van, bring the monitors along and we could share the costs ...

IF .....  could ......  But when would that be?  How long would we have to wait? I mean, you didn't have the money for the monitors until mid november or so, according to your post from 10 september:

if this were to take 2 months longer, i could be in again ... ;) why not postpone it?

Does this not count for cabs? Ully, don't get me wrong, but you choose not to be part of the monitor deal anymore, so stop interfering.

Besides, hatster already mentioned that a mate of his could bring it to the mainland for roughly € 300 - € 400, which would mean  € 10 - € 14 per monitor (28 monitors). Not expensive in my book. How much cheaper can it get?  :)

yeah, I know.  ;D  It's perhaps a bit direct, but it's also clear what I mean. I don't like it when there could be some vagueness about my message.

I think that you are a nice guy, but personally I feel a bit frustrated about the way you act in this deal. First the 'issue' with the transport costs. Then you getting out of this deal in a late stadium because you 'suddenly' realized that you didn't have the money, which can happen of course. Then you try to postpone the deal with another few months so you might join again (although we knew that the seller already started to sell some monitors. And we are also not sure that you will join then (You are now talking about buying cabs from Rav, would you spend money on monitors now? )). And finally you want us to wait until you decide IF you will get another cab, or more, and when you pay those to ship them with the monitors, in order to save you some money.

You use the words IF (in capital), which in my book means that you are not even sure about it. Should we wait for that? Don't think so. But perhaps the others disagree with me and I shouldn't be so upset.

Personally I feel that we can't save much more money on the transport of the monitors. It's already pretty low as I said above above.

hey erik, are you the new sheriff in town or what?

pointing out that this or that hasn't been done yet, telling other persons what to do and where to step back, ...

one of the main reasons i dropped out of the monitor deal was the fact that you brought up that stupid "divide costs by number of monitors thing and not by the number of people involved" which made me lose out on the free monitors. just out of curiosity: why didn't andré split up the shipping costs for the phoenix arcade stuff according to the number of items or the weight of stuff? why did he split it up according to the number of persons involved? there are people who only ordered one item while others have ordered tons of stuff, however in the end everyone is paying the same share of shipping costs ... ?!? i'm sorry, but i think you are way to anal when it comes to money. it should be more about making other people happy than about how to save a buck or two!

believe me, i have many more reasons why i dropped out of the deal and why i'd rather spend my money on cabs atm than on monitors, but i don't want to go into details, otherwise the sheriff would probably arrest me!

i have to be careful, because

sorry for interfering with your thread! believe me, it won't happen again ...

And all the people who took the time to respond to my 'proposal' agreed with me. ??? And what have the free monitors to do with it?

Anyway, enough said, I guess. Let's move on and happy gaming!  :)

Sorry, but I don't like being dragged into this mud-fight like this.

First of all I clearly explained in PM WHY I did the sharing, but since this is out in the open here now, I will explain once more.
I deducted the amount of rebate we get from the total shipping costs. Now let's use our brains for a moment...The people who ordered for the most amount of money (weight is less of an issue, if at all here) are probably mostly entitled to their "share" of that rebate because the more paid, the higher the rebate. This way, the guys who paid the most already contribute the most in the virtual shipping costs.

In the end the total shipping costs was $66,50 and the rebate $40. Leaving a total of $26,50 for shipping. Divided by 5 people, the shipping costs is exactly $5,30 which converted means about €3,90. I'm sorry but you can't compare €3,90 to the amount needed to pay for shipping the monitors.

Besides that, we already discussed the shipping of the monitors and sorry but you were the only one who thought about it this way Ully and you opted to step out of the deal, which of course is your good right.

I'm not going to run in circles and start up that discussion again, but I still cannot see why someone who would order 10 monitors would have to pay the same amount as someone who would order 1. I know you keep comparing it with stuff like the artwork deal, but weight is only a very tiny factor in that deal PLUS I do not know the weight of all the various stuff and calculating or estimating is not worth my time compared to a couple of freaking Euro's per person !.......Comparing the monitor deal with the artwork group-buyy is comparing apples and pears....

BUT I would like it if we could call it peace here, this is a rather pointles debate. Ully probably offered the shared transport option in good will but I also understand Erik's view because you decided to get out of the deal and it felt like you were trying to get on board again.

Anyway I feel this discussion is rather destructive and pointless. Let's move on to getting the monitors from Rav to Calais where they can be picked up by Krousti....

P.S. : This (The Phoenix artwork) is the last group-buy I organized. All the hassle and shit around it is not worth it IMHO. I'd rather pay 25 bucks shipping cost just for my items than having to go through all this.....DAMN !

hey guys,

ok i just spoke to my "man with a van" friend.  He says he is in UK in the first week in November, and can pick up from Rav then, and deliver to calais, or possibly to wherever (for extra cost of course) - any suggestions ?  the cost will be 400e or less to calais (I would say 400 then we know where we are) so divided by 28 monitors? would be around 14,30 per monitor.

I dont need to confirm with him for another few days whether I want it doing or not. what do you guys think ?

Cheers,

Kev.

Unfortunately I'm on holidays on the first week of November (from October30th until November7th) in... U.K. (Oxford). :-\
BUT I'm free on November 8,9,10 & 11th (=weekdays).
Would that work for your friend to meet in Calais on one of these dates, Thwocker?

I would then pick up:
Falcon NL: 1
Level 42: 3
Atarimania: 4
Gyruss: 1
CKong: 3
ChrisChris: 2
Speleo_de: 5
Thwocker: 4

...and store them in Belgium.
As I'm visiting Gyruss in December, I could bring the Monitors for the NL guys along.
Let me know.

hey guys,

before theres any confusion (unless i misunderstand) my friend is going to want to unload all monitors in one place, and not tour europe / wait for various people in different places.  I dont think the location will be too much of a problem and can be mutually agreed, but must be one place and one time.

Cheers and I will post when i have some more info.

You're right Hatster and to avoid any other confusions too, i'd like to underline that so far I'm only picking theses monitors and bring them to Holland in december:
Falcon NL: 1
Level 42: 3
Atarimania: 4
Gyruss: 1
CKong: 3
ChrisChris: 2
Speleo_de: 5
Thwocker: 4

I can pick up everything if this helps and store them in Ecaussinnes (a village 35Km from Brussels).

payment wise was hoping you could all pay him your share in cash on the day ? what do you all think ?

He is leaving here (spain) this afternoon for the UK, expecting to be at Ravs for Monday, and then hopefully in Antwerp area late Monday / tuesday..

Guys, I'm really hoping to get my kicks on the wonderful road to Hilversum tomorrow but everybody seems to tell me I'm crazy to take the road with such a bad weather.
Anyway, I'll wake up early tomorow and check the roads and the weather report before taking any final decision.
I know you want your monitors and I don't want to keep you waiting.
I'm on holidays until December 28th so I'm sure that IF tomorrow's trip is cancelled the new one will happen a few days later.
Hope you understand.

Safety first, the monitors can wait if driving is too risky. I know that there was a lot of snow in the south of The netherlands, more than 20 cm. And because tonight is freezing cold, -14 or more, the salt on the roads isn't doing its job (it works only when it is not colder than -8), which combined with the fact that there is almost no trafic, leads to slippery roads.

So, if I were you, I would reconsider the trip. I would hate it when on the 8 o'clock news we see a Belgian van on its side with a lot of strange boxes and 'electronic parts' scattered around.

Thanks for your advice Ckong.
I indeed decided to stay home today. Temperature dropped down during the night and now the roads are frozen here.
Even the buses on this part of Belgium are all cancelled.
I'll arrange for another date as soon as possible with Gyruss and let you all know.
It should happen this week or the next one though... again sorry about that, better to be safe than sorry.
I'll have a cup of warm wine on you with my 19 monitors friends later this afternoon.

Well I just drove from Ridderkerk to Alkmaar without any serious problems, BUT the traffic jams are still crazy even though the roads were all clear of snow.

However I can totally understand your decision and actually am glad because there is no sense in taking any risks or huge traffic delays for this !

Better next time :)

I am now in hilversum, comming from breda, but the highways are pretty clear for the salt.
some parts are a bit slippery, and in the city there is alot of slippery roads.

Like Andre says there are traffic jams , but in my route not more than on a regular day.

But ofcourse we stand behind your decision!, Safety first, like Eric says; it would be a disaster to hear on the radio that some belgian van ended up in some accident

So enjoy with your 19 friends and take a extra wine to keep you warm inside  ;D

i did visit gyruss today and i needed to drive like 800 meters from point a where i was working to point b where gyruss lives...

it took me 30 minutes by car  :o

so be happy you did not go there chrischris !

on the highway was good, the way in the city to my customer was good too, but the city has a lot of one way streets and the part of "leaving" hilversum was totally bad and icy, no salt spraying was done there !

it took me 1 hour from the place i work to the enter of the highway..  wich normally takes me 10 minutes (including red lights!)

so you made the right decision!

We have (about) all the schools as customer there so I have been into about every part and little back-street, but only now I start (about) to know my way around ;)

It was on the news today that they were already out of salt for the roads in Hilversum.....and it seems here too.

Pretty AMAZING considering the same thing happened only 1 year ago. Yep, that's our government, always having a brilliant view of the future and learning from past mistakes.......NOT !

Yes the monitors for the Dutch guys have arrived safely !!

The boxes were a bit bigger than I had expected and I couldn't have fitted six in my car so I left the one's for CKONG at Gyruss' place.

By the way Gyruss, I forgot my Centipede manual and schematics in your gameroom.

IIRC yours is there too falcon...shame that I forgot but don't I also still have a Nintendo T-molding for you ?

It was great to play Gyruss' DK machine....I'm still so in love with that game ! :P

Atarimania: 4 => 2 at Atarimania, 2 at Chris's place
Gyruss: 1 => At Gyruss
CKong: 3 => At Gyruss
ChrisChris: 2 => At ChrisChris
Speleo_de: 5 => At ChrisChris
Thwocker: 4 => At ChrisChris

By the way I would like to thank Mitch and Rav and Ckong and all the others who helped making this a reality. To be totally honest I was a bit afraid that this would never work out but it sure did and in a great way too !!!! We're an amazing community !!!!

I opened one of the boxes, and man there's only few things better than seeing a brand-new monitor ;)

One is going in the Galaxian. Not sure about the other two yet, maybe one for the Puckman or Joust, we'll see....

By the way I would like to thank Mitch and Rav and Ckong and all the others who helped making this a reality. To be totally honest I was a bit afraid that this would never work out but it sure did and in a great way too !!!! We're an amazing community !!!!

+1  :spaceace:

Too bad that I couldn't be there yesterday. I will collect my monitors at Gyruss place as soon as possible.

No pics?

I didn't take a lot of pictures 'cause I totally forgot, but as you can guess it was great to meet level42 and Gyruss and to talk a bit about you know what ;)

To summarize, I travelled from Belgium to Hilversum (NL) with (too many) monitors and came back with the Rolling Thunder cab I bought from Gyruss.

First things first, let's dedicate this mini-road trip to the disco memory of the late Bobby Farell (the shiny loud guy from Boney M) who was buried on the very same day a few kilometers from there in Amsterdam.  :'(

Leaving rainy Belgium in the morning with the good old van full of good (new) old monitors:

Easy trip (2h30) by the rivers of Babylon...
Bringing Gyruss the most important meal of the day straight from Belgium:

Unloading/loading was easy (I pretended I had to go to the bathroom as usual so no pictures).
Then we used the opportunity to play Gyruss's great classic cabs and to talk trash about all of you DLF guys  ;D
Then we worshipped the Centipede God (here, André):

Time flies and it's already time to leave (can you hear the Rrrrrolling Thunder?)...

As you noticed I came back with "some" monitors ::)
We were all a bit confused about who was picking what so for those of you who haven't picked their monitors yet,
just PM me and I'll find an easy way to get you these beauties in no time! (see Reply#248 for a good summary)

We're almost there and then we can close this thread for good!
Again it's great that it worked out so well, this is the only place where this kind of sweet deal could happen imho, we rule, we're the daddy cool! ;D

It was great meeting you Chris, and thanks again for the beer and of course for bringing the monitor.  :spaceace: :spaceace:

@ Andre: thanks for taking a look at the centi and the great stories, I'll guard your manual with my life  ;)

@ Etienne: The PCB wasn't the problem, Andre is going to investigate the trackball.

We also had to chance to meet another member (troll?) who lives in the same town as i do.. So it was a fun day!

that sounds like we dont need to cut them out again to install sockets ;)

did he bring his trackball too to test your board ? or did he take the stuff from you to his place for further investigation ?

sorry totally off topic , maybe bruno can move this to the correct threat ? i dont like to "steal" topics...

I didn't bring my trackball because mine is not so easy to remove because of the back-lit trackball.

I brought Gyruss' trackball back to my home to have a further look but I'm pretty sure one of the opto's is bad.
When measuring the outputs I got almost 5V on all except one which was only 2,2 V.

So I do hope Gyruss' board is OK, but it's not 100% sure.

??

I tested one monitor on my Galaxian, works great ! Had to adjust the focus a bit, that's it. Still need to put it in the cab though. The only pity is that there are no pre-wired connectors included with the monitors (the Kortek that I recently installed in my Ms.Pac did have one).

But I'm really not complaining :)

Good to hear that they are working fine, still haven't tested mine.

Wahoo....installed one of these beauties in my Galaxian !

Works GREAT !

I had a TV in there before, but it had some syncing problems at the top (read at the right side) of the screen (pulsing). Of course it works fine now.

The good thing was that I could undo the extra wiring for the +12V and +5V from the game PCB to the SCART connector. I can now also remove the extra voltage regulator I put on the board plus the extra connectors for those voltages. The bad thing was that when I was removing the TV, about the worst thing that could happen happened, the right "slide" of the monitor board got loose, so the neck of the tube hit the game PCB and heya, there was a sssssssssssssssssssshhhh sound... :( So, one less 19" CRT in the world. Also there was some minor damage on the PCB (some tiny filter caps broken, but the board still works fine....will fix that a bit later...

Anyway........the new monitor is now inside, firmly installed and working great !

Thats not cool when that happens.., remembers me one time fixin a tv and when i was done i hit the neck while installing the cover...
but be happy its just a tv, and not the new monitor !

A little update on this Neverending Monitor Group Buy story  ;)

A few weeks ago I went to Etienne's place to drop Thwocker's 4 monitors (and pick up some other stuff).

Last week I had the pleasure to meet speleo_de and his daughter who came at my place to pick up his 5 beauties.
We had a nice chat and a "healthy" meal and I took the opportunity of having a vector expert at my place to learn some basics about PCBs
and to have him install my Asteroids high score save kit.
It worked like a charm! (hey you never know, as Andreas said before operating "It's a very old patient so there's always a risk"  ;) ).

(the orange and pink weird stuff on the right are not barbapapas (http://www.barbapapa.fr/), these are balloons from my kid's first birthday).

Last Sunday was a historical day because from this day, my part of the "monitor group buy" is officially/eventually/finally done!
Atarimania and I met and he picked up the last 2 monitors I had in my storage.

FYI, here's a picture of this mysterious guy next to my car.
(You can see that we share the same taste when it comes to "decoration"  :P)

Mind you, he didn't come empty handed.
Mum, look what he gave me: a 1983 issue from Electronic Fun  :!: :!: :!:
I checked it immediately when I came back home and this thing is really like a time machine.
It's an excellent read specially when you know a bit of the history of video games because you are able to read the "news" in a very different light,
knowing in advance which game/console/developer is gonna be a success or a dramatic failure.
I'm hooked now and the dealer only gave me one issue ;) ...plus as you can see, Godzilla is attacking "Joystick City" as we speak.
What am I gonna do???

Last but not least I also received an impressive Atari Phoenix cardboard mobile NOS  :!: :!: :!:
Should I open it? Am I really worth it??

Thank you so much, Atarimania, meeting you + these gifts really made my (Sun)day.
 :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

I will now think of a very special spot for this mighty phoenix in my future gameroom (yes it's coming up in the next months! teaser! teaser!).

And to conclude:

For me this is one of those amazing stories that you are at first a bit skeptical if things will work out from beginning to end.

I think this is where this forum and our community shines at it's best :)

Ireland
UK
Belgium
Holland
Germany
France
Spain

People from all these countries were involved. Many hardly knew each other. But we made it happen :)
If only our politicians could co-operate like this.... :P

Thanks again to ALL involved, esp. of course Mitchomagic,RAV and ChrisChris, I love the one I already installed, and it's such a rich feeling to still have 2 unboxed :)

Nah, still have two, one for my Qbert, the other will remain spare as long as possible.

But even after just three years it seems totally impossible to ever find brand new CRT monitors again.....especially for that price....

Me 2... i only bought one, but luckily the previous owner of my moon patrol also installed one in it...

Nevertheless i could really use one in the Xevious or ms pac... Let's find some more, they are probably rotting away somewhere in a warehouse..
