While looking for the Service Manual of my Philips CM8524 monitor I found this great site:
http://www.freeservicemanuals.info/en/
Loads of free service manuals there and there is a list of stuff that hasn't been scanned yet. If you need anything on the list simply send a mail and it will be scanned and uploaded within a week or two....
The CM8524 was on that list so I requested it and just got a mail that it is now available. Brilliant !
Being Dutch you will find a lot of Philips stuff but there are plenty of other brands there too....

Nice site, thanks for sharing. ;)

Nice too:

....such a cool site.....
Stuff that I found:
This was the very last cassette deck that Philips made in it's traditional "deck" format. I bought one of those new in, I think it was a super-market, who had probably bought them at dump-prices and sold them for likewise prices....I can still feel how every control felt to operate...

Those LEDs were SO cool then:

I also had this "inherited" from my grandparents:
(http://www.hifimuseum.info/741.jpg) Since I also had "inherited" the old Akai Receiver from my parents, I used this as a tuner only. The Akai had the "better" amp section but this Philips beat the Akai easily in tuner-sound.... :D
At that time my parents had upgraded to this Sony:
(http://www.hifimuseum.info/tn_sony%20STR-343L.jpg)....one of the very few Sony devices that never failed at our or my home AFAIR (I never buy anything Sony anymore....)
They also had this pick-up....not too bad, but not really great either....
(http://www.hifimuseum.info/tn_akai%20AP-306C.JPG) This one seems to have an upgraded plateau, I remember it was much lower...
I also had a Philips reel-to-reel recorder. Although not a top-deck, it smoked the compact cassette sound....
I was amazed to see this picture again:

Had that too ! Used to edit reel-to-reel tape..... Inside:

On top you see the plexi "cutting table", to the right some simple "shaver blades" to make the cuts.....so cool !
I think about every home had this BITD:

I know we're totally drifting of, but hey, it's "my" thread...
Another cool site:
http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/catalog_directory.html
All Radio Shack catalogs. The 80's one's have some nice goodies for our hand-held fans :)
-
nice stuff, i love the look of that akai player..
-
Great stuff
I have my tv in the game room hooked to a 80's akai amplifier. I love the warm sound of it.
-
The Akai pick-up (my parents bought it new, it was then the top unit from Akai, which doesn't say that much as AKAI was never really a top brand) used to be my player until I got a Technics SL-1410 for free....including a great quality Empire cartridge...., was DFL 450 alone BITD the original owner told me...
Just bought Havoc and Bright Lights from Alanis Morissette on vinyl (incl. CD).....nice 100 grams vinyl....sounds AWESOME...
Do also check out their page about an exhibition they did in 2008....:

Excellent in every way (decoration etc.) :)

It's a Akai AM U02 amp

-
WAAAAAHHH, LOL, I had that one a bit later too.....with the Philips still as a tuner ;D
-
I've got it's little brother, the U01. I use it to power the audio from my Amiga's :)
-
I have a Stanton direct drive turntable to play my records, I bought it so I could scratch with it, but I have done that in years now
-
Drifting further and further but.....friend of me just cleaned a vinyl record with............wood glue.
Yes.
Believe it.
The sound went from "nice campfire background music" to "close to freaking new" !!!
He uploaded a sample on facebook but not sure how to link it....
It does take 10 hours of waiting until the glue is fully set.....

....and while we are moving further and further off topic....here's a nice way to clean your stylus with...........Magic Erasers (every arcade video game collectors has a box of those at hand :) )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZWf6tlvVss
-
I've done both the wood glue (as a last ditch on a couple clean but crackly LPs) and the magic eraser tricks!
I usually use the Magic Erasers if for some reason the stylus is extra dirty. Certainly a cheaper alternative to the Onzow Zerodust which is in itself an awesome product I also use.

and ofcourse not to forget, the famous Philips 953:

I'm pretty sure my dad still has one of those (or a similar one from Philips) in his garage, but in a far worse shape. As long back as I can remember it already has been sitting in the garage - only to function as a radio since the cassette player and pickup never worked in my memory. It must already have gathered a 40-year layer of dust, paint specs and mold ;D
-
I also have this "3 in 1" model from Sanyo, looks kickass, pics available if somebody curious. :D
