Title: Repro arcade stickers
Post by: level42 on February 02, 2011, 09:26:47 PM
OK, new thread about reproduction of (Euro) arcade stickers like f.i. Atari Ireland "type-plates".

Here's an example picture of my Star Wars cockpit:

And to start with a really ANAL and IMPORTANT thing: We also need to be able to emboss those serialnrs. and type letters.....

(P.S. Although not really necessary, I'd like to see that VAN logo repro-ed as well ;)

that's not ANAL, that's how it HAS TO be :D. alexander is already working on this one, he's using an old typewriter without a ribbon to "imprint" those numbers. as i've said: it looks totally convincing. he will most likely be coming over soon and then i'll ask him to bring some samples i'll also check my machines for euro-stickers tomorrow!

I wonder if it is legitimate to restore these UBERHAUPT. I think it is cool to have a nice restored cab but with the original serial sticker. It's the difference between a reproduction and a restoration IMO.

do you have a "straight" shot of it ?, or a scan ?

In the meantime i made a new avatar / logo for you  8)

+1, what's the point of having a fake serial number?
Title: Re: Repro arcade stickers
Post by: level42 on February 03, 2011, 12:37:35 PM
Fake ? Not fake ! Simply the same serial number as it came with...

Well......about repro/resto:

It's the same with everything else on a cab: do you leave it original or do you replace stuff ?

F.i. I see very little harm done in replacing the black vinyl on my SW. Nor do I see much trouble in replacing a lot of other stuff. Of course, the goal is always to first try to "revive" the original parts but sometimes they are either simple impossible to revive or they could be simply missing at all.

To replace the vinyl on the backdoor of my SW I had to remove those stickers. However careful I tried, it still didn't get better from the whole job....It's totally wrinkled now and to put it back on the machine would look totally out of place.

I see very little problems in putting a perfect looking copy of that serial sticker on it though.....it will maintain the tight look of the machine.
Now, of course, it _has_ to be perfect ;)

@Etienne: of course I still have that pic in full res, I'll mail you. Not sure if scanning it in it's current condition is going to help a lot.... ?

i don't see why one should NOT reproduce those stickers, even with the wrong serial number. sometimes the board inside needs to be replaced, what about those serial numbers? they don't match either! i'd like to have those stickers on my cabs and i'll definitely put them on once they are repro'd

dont know without seeing it  ;)
i read that you have it "de-atached" from the cab ?

If so , scanning it does not hurt, and i can see what is the best source..

by the way, VAN has a new logo ...

Yeah I found their site...little of interest there...apart from that the coin-up branche has a very hard time...

I prefer the old logo (much more 70's look ;) )

That ANDRE logo rocks Etienne ! HaHa !!!!

Should I put it on a shirt or on sticker ? The only trouble is that I'm probably more known by the Level 42 name ;)

Geez....you are lightning fast !

:)

Well......the thing is that the ANDRE word is a bit more of a surprise of course.

It visibly puts you "on the wrong leg" because the word starts with the A (as you expect) and even the R is on the right place. And it's also 5 letters :)

There's only two problem with changing my avatar now:
1) I still really like the Nixie-tube one I've got now....and I guess a lot of people recognize it right away...
2) There are already so many with an Atari logo.....

so if someone can provide me the measurements, then ill update the file. and investigate if my printer can print on aluminium  ;)

Sure, and with dimentions please, i am probably going to do a run on alu stickes soon, so i can include this too in "the master file"
(there will be a piece of 100 x 70 cm available for the run, so i can fill this space with "silver stickers")

Etienne, I have searched high and low, but I probably put it in such a safe place that I can't find it anymore.....

Maybe one of the other cockpit owners can measure it please ?? The VAN logo was amazingly exactly as wide as the Atari sticker IIRC.

They included 3 different materials of which 2 where just plain vinyl, so thats not suitable, but the alu looks the material we need for this :

Soft Bump  ;)

Andre cannot find his, so can anybody who has this measure it for me please, then i can prepare the "Alusticker run" and i can come with a price per sticker comming from that run for those of you that are interested in a repro of a alu serial sticker..

I dont have any intentions of making profit from this, but the more stickers, the cheaper it will be ofcourse..

Other models of the stickers are possible, as i will repro them for you in vector, so if you have need for a replecement alu sticker i can take it in this run, i have a sheet of 100 x 70 cm that will be printed, and needs to be filled.  ::)

Wahoo, I just saw an old picture of my Centipede and it has the same sticker !

Measured it (the real thing, not the picture of course ;) ) but I only did measure A and C (yet).

A=7,0 cm.
C=7,7 cm.

I'll get B & D for you after dinner Etienne...

Here's a pic of the original Marktplaats ad. I remember that back then I was about the only one hunting Marktplaats for those cabs ! :)

Don't be fooled by the picture, it _IS_ the same shape as the SW one, this looks more square because of the angle....

The great thing is that the indicated Pat.Numbers are simply the same, so are the voltage and amps rating (which is kinda weird, no way Centi is eating up as much power as the SW.....I figure they just settled for a rather high rating and be done with it....)

Anyway, the good thing about it is that it opens it up to (about?) all Irish built Atari machines which makes it more feasible to produce.

Etienne, not sure how high "demand" for this will be, is there any way to do it good on an inkjet or laser printer at home/office ?

Also, are these labels also available with the rounded corners ?
Title: Re: Repro arcade stickers
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on March 03, 2011, 07:32:42 PM
I think im going to let my printer do the run anyway, and let him slith them too, so they come out cutted with rounded corners  :P

I need some zacc plates too , and so does bela, so already i got some "customers"

now i know the size, i can calculate how much i can squeez in the sheet that i have, and i can determine the final price per piece.

The rest i can always put up on Ebay & Marktplaats, and see what happens..
Its easy shippable in a envelope sandwiched between 2 pieces of cardboard.

when i calculated everything i will make a dedicated "groupbuy" topic

Like i said before, if you got a particular "alusticker" that you would like to see reproduced, now is the change, i can make it and integrate it in the run
just send me the details and i'll vector it and put it on the sheet

Sorry really busy....up next....

I checked a site about IBM typewriters (selectric). Those had interchangeable letter "balls".

I found this site:
http://www.selectric.org/selectric/index.html

and through it I found this font called Bookface72 which looks VERY much like the stamped letters on the serial stickers:

I can't imagine that they let someone actually type up all those stickers, but at least we could have a path here....?

Also: if we could also do the version that is on CKONG's Gravitar....I think the one's on my Video Pinball are the same, I'll check them too....

Heading off into the gameroom for measures and more !

After discussing it with Etienne I put up some threads on other forums to see if there is more interest in these. The reason is simple: the more we get, the cheaper they get (and we don't mind helping other guys in the hobby :P)

So (mainly for my own reference) here's the list:

What you need to emboss your serial numbers is a good old Kingsley Pneumatic Press
http://www.furnacemfg.com/vinyl/vinyl-records/foil-stamping.html (http://www.furnacemfg.com/vinyl/vinyl-records/foil-stamping.html)
There are some on ebay US atm but it's pretty expensive (starting at 135$)...
You could also only buy the letters (http://cgi.ebay.com/2-BOXES-KINGSLEY-HOT-FOIL-MACHINE-TYPE-SETS-/280635727186) put some ink (or a sheet of decal letters) on it and emboss them using a small hammer...

I think a light tap with a plastic hammer on the opposite of the proper letter should work. These are pretty thin stickers....

I think a light tap with a plastic hammer on the opposite of the proper letter should work. These are pretty thin stickers....

Hey Andre:

Ik weet niet of een van die type in de buurt komt ??

if not, you can try a search for "daisy wheel"

That machine that chris is talking about looks good too, although its a bit expensive  ;)

i'll be using an old typewriter for the letters. my austrian friend alex has had some nice test results, i'll ask him what he used exactly!

Interesting...one of the balls is unmarked....I can't see it really well on the pic, but it looks close....I dropped him an e-mail to ask for a close-up shot of that one....

The courier might work as well. It comes pretty close to the Bookface font but it's not 100%. I found a Bookface ball in the US but not sure if they ship to Europe.

Also Etienne, why do you think the stickers will wrinkle in an actual typewriter ? Is the material too thin maybe ? Not doubting it but I'm really not too sure.
It's been ages since I've last touched one, but I think the IBM's should have a pretty good transport mechanism....
Only problem is that it's another bulky machine in the house....

If we use the IBM letterball "by hand" we have to set up a table of which letter is exactly opposite to the one we want so we know how to position it properly ;)

dont know it for sure that it wrinkles, im just affraid of it  ;)

what i do know is that the sticker is aluminium, and as you can see on the picture, it is tending to stay "curled"..

this was with the "protection" loose, so maybe you can straight them again in the middle of a thick book

what i do know is that it is easy to insert dents..  so use caution when you are inserting the letters

I can say that i will not enter the letters for you guy's (i also dont have those letter punches  ;D)

i have a sample here, so if you like i can drop it at your place , so you can experimentate with it..
and if thats not enough, i will take 2 or even 3 sheets of this at the supplier, just in case one screws up  ;)

I'd love to see a sample. We can even compare to the real thing.

I scored an IBM selectric with a load of balls for 10 Euro ! My wife is going to kill me....

i would need those stickers that chrischris showed us

dimensions are as follows (the size of the two is identical):

- width: 7.45 cm
- height: 8.85 cm

unfortunately, i can't provide any better pictures, but perhaps chris could scan his ... :-*

Oke, its defenetly on, so i will create a new topic for the "Alurun" soon

For now , i just want to update you guys, i have made a vector file with the size of the sheet that i have and that is going to the printer.

I have to make 5 millimeters around each sticker, so i can cut them after the printing.

I am using a group per sticker and to keep track of which is which i named the group with the information i got:

For the Atari stickers i don't need to do that ofcourse, since the serials are not printed..  ;)

the first ones that entered the show are ofcourse the Zaccs  ;D

......... The VAN logo was amazingly exactly as wide as the Atari sticker IIRC.

The VAN logo is adjusted with the correct dimentions..

Okay, after comparing alot with Andre we came to the conclusion that the font i used on the Irish Atari sticker was too thick

now another dilemma..

I thought after creating a perfect USA one, to use that and adjust some texts,
but ofcourse a picture tells more than 1000 words, so i took the USA one, and put the pic from the Irish behind it:
(the magenta is the vector)

I would say, just change the text and make that fit the Irish text with the same font, but as you can see there are som minor differences as well on the logo.
I also noticed that they used dots instead of comma's for the patent numbers, so that i will do too ofcourse.
also the black part with the serialnumber is different and will be adjusted according to the original.

I dont want too be too Anal about it, and i dont have Atari cabs, but since i offered you guys to join in, i want to make sure that you guys are happy with the stickers that will be printed, so any input on this will be appriciated / adjusted in the file.

after that i can start positioning the etikettes on demand, and when the sheet is full enough i can take it to the printer.

Another nice thing about this is that i talked with the owner of the printshop and he offered me to be there and see the complete process in detail (something like a fieldtrip  :D)  which will be documented ofcourse and published here on DLF.

Thanks in advantage for your input guys !  :pac:

Okay, thanks for all your input  ;)

I have rebuild it with the correct font, repositioned everything, and made a test PDF wich is haning out in Level42's mailbox waiting for some serious checking.

After i get the confirmation that this is correct, ill make the adjustments, and the file is ready to place in the alurun sheet for the people that wants Irish serial plates.

would it be possible to scan / straight shot thisone chris ?
thanks !

Ooops totally missed that post, sorry guys...
I can't scan it but I can take very precise measurements tonight.
Would it help?

That is always good, i have already received a very straight marco shot from SuperUlly, and the creation is in progress.

if you can measure it, i can use that to double check the file i am making from Ully's pic.

Thanks Chris!

This is an example of how a "graphic rebuilder" dreams of getting measurements.

This is the way to go chris !, Thanks  :spaceace:

i have already made a rebuild of the sticker based on Ully's "Hires supermacro perfect picture" and i will compare them.

PS no offence to other guys who also deliver measurements, as long as the data is correct i am very happy with you too ofcourse  ;)

I will also print the files you sent me this afternoon and compare it to the original sticker.
Then we're good to go!

Very Cool, although i have a question for the people that want the irish atari alternative sticker...

At first i send a repro that i made to ully to compare it to the original, he mentioned that it was way off..

so i asked a straight shot from him and did a rebuild on the base of his file..

now i am looking and comparing the two sources and discover this :

there is a black line on the originals, that look like they where part of a "border" and as you can see in the pic, the two sources have them on opposite sides, which gives me the feeling that they are jus not cutted precise in the past..

now what ?  i think the best option is to take the distance between the letters and the border and apply that on all the sides so it will be correct.

What do you guys think ? (before i start to adjust everything again )
Title: Re: Repro arcade stickers
Post by: Superully on March 17, 2011, 12:16:59 PM
i'd say this is badly cut as well - i'd leave out those black lines!
Title: Re: Repro arcade stickers
Post by: level42 on March 17, 2011, 12:32:34 PM
I say we cut them badly as well to get the real repro-feel....

....just kidding of course. I agree with Ully ! (O no, not _again_ ) ;) ;)
Title: Re: Repro arcade stickers
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on March 17, 2011, 01:17:39 PM
Okay, i will make an overlay based on the data that chris provided and put that over my repro that i have now, and see if the positioning was done correct by me  ;D

After that ill take the black lines out, and will ajust the size to the "inner part" of the border (that almost dont exist).

(http://www.thedivav.com/theeyeshaveit/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/confused-smiley.jpg) Is this making sence what i am saying now ?

See that's how easy it is to compensate: total and complete waste of space, money, time :D

the thing is: i don't want and need to defend myself, because I AM still a kid inside. i hate it when people lose their childish side simply because of some stupid number which represents your age or because they think society expects them to behave in a certain way because they are old. i never will! you should see me doing crazy things in summer :P

I printed Etienne's files on both regular paper and transparent paper to compare them to my originals.
The result... 10/10! a perfect match, good job (again), Vecta Mastah!

Transparent paper tests might be hard to judge from these pics but believe me it's spot on.

Thats the way i like it , so i will adjust only the "borders" that we talked about before and then this one is also redy for printing

better start counting how many sets you need Ully  ;)
