Title: Lazarian marque restoration?
Post by: PaulSwan on May 15, 2012, 02:50:32 AM
Hi,

Mostly focused on the electronics side of game restoration & maintenance I've thus far managed to avoid the need to get too involved in the artwork restoration side (Zac art holds up well). However, the marque on my Lazarian is continuing to deteriorate to the degree that it looks really bad and if it’s not at least scanned in they’ll be nothing left to scan but dust. AFAIK, there is no existing repro or electronic archive of this artwork.

This is the state it’s in at the moment :
(http://www.zzzaccaria.com/artwork/Lazarian/Lazarian marque 2w/Left.jpg)
(http://www.zzzaccaria.com/artwork/Lazarian/Lazarian marque 2w/Right.jpg)

Midway “sucked” at printing on glass :(

I have 300 DPI scans off the fancy Xerox colour copier at work (~15Mb):

http://www.zzzaccaria.com/artwork/Lazarian/Lazarian marque 2.zip (http://www.zzzaccaria.com/artwork/Lazarian/Lazarian marque 2.zip)

I personally have close to zero artistic talent, no software or drawing skills of any kind so I’m looking for some help from folks more skilled than I. I’m happy to pay or trade – I should be able to get the printing done here myself so I’m just looking for someone to take these files and restore the art.

Thanks,

Paul.

Halftone...  My favorite...  NOT    :D

Very nice artwork and it is in the best hands by now. ;)

Yeah, I noticed that this isn't as simple as the solid colour mostly straight line type of art - it has lots of those little dot shading areas :(

I looked on KLOV to see who else had one - someone supposedly has a mint one - except for the marque :( I'm willing to bet they are all like this by now. I'll probably print 10 or so off for the 4 or so known uprights that exist.

As always, your artistic talents are greatly admired :)

Paul.

The image makes me wonder, are the different shades of green supposed to be like that, or is that just the flaking? I mean, it looks like they've relied heavily on the halftone here (shiver).
Title: Re: Lazarian marque restoration?
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on May 16, 2012, 10:54:18 AM
Thats the flaking, there is only one shade of green used here,

the other tones are accomplished by the halfoning over it

Yes, the colours themselves are all supposed to be solid - the watermark like blotches are likely the onset of delamination/seal failure  :'( AFAIK all the shading is supposed to be just the little dots.

There's a guy on KLOV asking for pix of the wiring for his cab. He might have a better marquee than yours, thought maybe you can pic trade to get you a better scan.

Let us know how the KLOV thing fares. If it fails, I might be able to do some tracing after my two current projects are done.

We can split the work Arch if you like..

Although it will be nice if you have time for it, its not that i dont want to do it, its just that i have alot on my hands atm, so i cannot tell when i got time for this...  :D

At least the scans where made, and i have stiched it already, so in general it is "saved"  :P

That would indeed have been cool. As I said I have a couple of things that I have to get done first (ref. other thread), but once that is out of the way I can start, and we can play it back and forth a bit. It's a nice thing to work together like this. And good thing you saved it. :)

To answer your question, yes, it's backlit. I checked the side art to see if the "grey" in the original should really be white and it is white on the side art. Would the marque have been grey-tint for the backlite, though, or it it just darkened over time?

I found this place that prints - anyone used it before?

http://emdkay.net/catalog/supply-your-artwork-marquee-p-118.html (http://emdkay.net/catalog/supply-your-artwork-marquee-p-118.html)

Really is a fantastic job, Mikonos

Paul.

Thanks, guys!

Paul, white will be white in printed backlite paper. If you are using a white light-tube inside of your marquee, backlite never turned yellow.

White in "Lazarian Marquee" must be white. I don´t thinks it was grey in origin.

Are your side arts ok, Paul? I can restore it for free. I´m interested in Lazarian artworks. :)

I don´t Know emdkay printed artworks, but I know than he unknow how to restore his own material. He sell artworks without restoration, like gameongrafix. I thinks these stores needs management by an arcade artist. It is a pity!

The best service of printed artwork is, I think, REPROART: http://zonaarcade.forumcommunity.net/?f=5117210

I oversee all printed artwork of this service of Zona Arcade: Construye, Restaura y Decora tu Máquina Arcade y Pinball.

The are thousand of printed arcade pieces. Check it for quality! :-)

I recommend you print Lazarian Marquee in normal backlite (without adhesive). Check this document wrote by me for to learn how you can put this paper in marquee glass.

http://zonaarcade.forumcommunity.net/?t=19990137

This is a normal backlite from REPROART of Galaxian Marquee:

no es Vector ?

No. Vectorizing, Etienne, in many cases, wreck original drawing and its imperfections .  ;)

Vectorizing is not the solution in all cases of arcade piece restoration. Of Course, I use vectors in some cases for colorizing or redraw some curves lines, but not systematically.

I thing vectorizing  it is a big mistake some times. It is boring, mechanical and long to do besides. Restoring "Lazarian Marquee" takes me 4 hours, and, I think sincerely,  it is the best restoration possible. The original drawing is here.

By the way, I forgot a yellow bright in "Eye Enemy". It was correct! (check again miniatures in previous post).  :)

Regards

Your spanish was perfect! Maybe so formal. "Su" denotes respect. "Tu" (possessive determinative too)  is more informal. :)

Is your wife from Spain?

Thanks for the info - do you mean this place?

http://www.reproart.com/ (http://www.reproart.com/)

This one has also been recommended...

http://www.gameongrafix.com/ (http://www.gameongrafix.com/)

The EMDKAY one is suppsoed to be OK but very slow to deliver.

In terms of side art, it's mostly OK though has some scratches and a small section of spray paint. I'm not sure I have a means to scan the side art, currently

Paul.

Nope, she is from Costa Rica.
And the spanish there differs a little bit, there are words that they dont use there, but in spain they do.
one of them is "tu", they use "su" or "usted" if i remember correctly.

Hey, someone should translate my Eurocade 2012 text and post it on that forum.....we don't have any Spanish visitors yet ! ;)

I don't really understand, is it a web-shop or a forum ? I see T-molding offered, some I've never seen in the US before...

Like this:

I +THINK+ the Italian built Centipede has this T-molding...

It's arrived! The size looks like it'll be a perfect fit.

Side-by-side:

This one taken with flash:

The reproduction is quite a bit darker and has higher contrast than the original, but I'm sure it'll look great with the high power marque light behind it :)

Thanks again, Mikonos,

Paul.

Great!

A little tip for print: There are a big difference between original serigraph marquee and backlite. In backlite is necessary to dark a little the file for printed. It is for compensating background light. :) When fluorescent tube lights, dark is counteracted. Greed and all color will be alive.  :)

If you have saw original arcade artwork above 90´s, like TMNT Marquee, Hook Marquee, and other in backlite, you would see this.
