Title: >>> Retro Game Experience/Eurocade 2014 <<<
Post by: level42 on May 16, 2014, 05:35:12 PM
Dear friends,

As you’ve seen we’ve had the first Eurocade/Retro Game Experience 2014 meeting and we and Sound & Vision have already been planning a lot of new and exiting stuff for 2014.

First of all, I would like to share what we see as probably the biggest and most important improvement for the „old-time” Eurocade attendents.

On saturday evening there will be a VIP party where we will try to replicate the „old” Eurocade feel as much as possible.
We felt that despite the huge success of the 2013 edition, this was an essential part that was missing. We already wanted it to be like that then but it was simply not possible at that moment.

Following the great number of visitors, we got a bit more room to arrange things with Sound & Vision and thus this VIP night will be happening this year !

This means that after normal closing hours, all general public will be (kindly) removed from the building and only the VIP visitors will be allowed to stay and play the games !

We will be organizing food, like in the old Eurocade style (but no shabby Chinese this time ;) ).

There will be a bar with seats installed near the „arcade room” so that we can get that feeling of the bar-room like at the „old” Eurocades :)

Those who will bring at least one cab to Eurocade/RGE 2014 will of course be on the VIP list !

The food and a couple of drinks will be free for those kind people, who are the backbone of the event ! :)
Further, other people who will contribute to the event in an important way will be welcome at the VIP party too of course, this is by the organizations decision only.

The VIP party ends at 0.00 hrs. after that there is still the cozy bar in the Hotel :)

For the old-time Eurocade visitors who _really_ cannot bring a cab this year there is the possibility to get on the VIP list too.
Dinner and drinks will be at a fair charge for those people though, or they can arrange their own dinner if they want, but they can still get in for the VIP night.
Those who attended previous Eurocades will have priority for this !

The VIP list _is_ limited, so be sure to let me know if you plan on coming and what cabs you will bring with you :)

>>>>>  NOTICE……    THE VIP LIST WILL CLOSE 3 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT.
>>>>>  THAT IS FRIDAY 22 AUGUST

So we MUST have your response BEFORE that date. This is so we can arrange everything perfectly, we _really_ do not want to be in a similar situation like last year regarding the saturday dinner, we hope you understand :)

Hotel:

We struck a deal again with the Hotel which is very close to Sound & Vision. We have 19 rooms reserved for you guys on the nights of 12,13 and 14 september.  There are also 5 apartments in the neighborhood of the Hotel available.

The price has rissen a bit though, but is still quite fair for the quality offered. Per room the price is €77,50 so €38,50 per person per night. This includes free parking, a nice breakfast and free WiFi.
Hotel info will be updated soon on www.eurocade.eu but here is the Hotel’s website: http://www.tulipinnhilversum.nl/en

You can contact them yourselves to reserve a room. BE SURE TO MENTION EUROCADE TO GET THIS PRICE !!!

We got a LOT of great new things in the planning, we are sure that it will be an even more exiting experience than 2013, more details about that will follow in the coming updates.

Now……please send me a PM if you are planning on coming and bringing one (or more :)) cabs and on what dates you will be there. Please mention what cab(s) you will bring too.

Naturally, like last year, those who bring one or more cabs also get FREE entry for that day.

Cheers, André

Great news!!! I did send you a pm a few minutes ago.
We will stay from friday to sunday of course in the hotel.
we will also bring a cab (wizard of wor or gorf) with our highscore kit installed if that´s okay so you guys can take a closer look at how this will work.

Can´t wait to team up with all of you again!!!

Count us (Capt.Kirk & Luigi) in for Saturday/Sunday!!

What cab would you like us to bring? You know, we grew old now, so please not too big and heavy ;)  ;D

:)

I'll be there for sure. Not sure what cab to bring. Only the dk fits through my stairway.

Off course it would be way cooler to bring one of my fighters MK2 KI or SF2 but this is a lot of trouble taking them apart

Excellent news guys, thanks for coming all the way from Germany, you guys Rock ! :)

I think Wizard of Wor would be awesome Tyrem, especially because it's such a brilliant two player game, which is great at such events IMHO ! Cool to see the new hardware in action !

Thorsten & Dirk, don't worry, this year you can bring a smaller cab as it looks like we can arrange a more local Bishi Bashi :):):) man was that a hit at the event :):) Wow, choosing a game from you guys brilliant collection is not easy....Discs Of Tron does jump to mind for sure.......but we also really need a Q*bert this year and it doesn't look like mine will be ready by then....;););)

Maybe you have another good suggestion though, we are happy with everything but we do try to get a balanced collection if possible.

Patrick we may very well need that DK, not sure yet.....yes we would love one of thefighter cabs and those were extremely popular too but we feel we cannot ask of you to do such an insane thing again....disassembling and reassembling them  for Eurocade/'RGE is close to madness !

Anyway it's great to see your enthusiasm, can't wait to see you all again :)

Count us in with Zita for 3 nights, I can bring some handhelds like last year. ;)
Patrick, you should bring your Hyper Olympics, forget about those heavy .... fighting games. ;D
I can assure you, HO will be the most popular game at this event. :D

Yes HO or Track & Field is definitely a game that would be awesome, so many people remember and love that game.

Awesome that you're coming over again Béla & Zita !

Etienne, no Dutch classic arcade event would be complete without Crazy Kong, after all that is what we grew up with instead of DK :):)

Rumours told me that the Event will be focussed NINTENDO in general...and in special when it comes to cabs

So count me in with a couple of cabs whichever is needed and fits into the trailer  :ghost:

About rumors: I don't like rumors. Sometimes they are incorrect. Sometimes they are only partially correct.

If you don't have a BishiBashi, we can bring it, of course.  If we don't have to bring it, we might bring 2 regular cabs. They should fit easily into Dirk's car :)

We need the BishiBashi. I would miss the button-smashing-sound in the building otherwise. :D

I think André said that they have another source for a BB ;)

I remember last year...every time they smashed the buttons we looked up 'cause it sounded like rain pounding on the (glass) roof  :D

was probably one the most popular cabs of the event  ;D
Title: Re: >>> Retro Game Experience/Eurocade 2014 <<<
Post by: level42 on May 20, 2014, 11:56:48 PM
Definitely, and I was glad I asked, I remember Thorsten was a bit surprised we asked for that one, but I remembered very well how much fun it was to play with three people and I _knew_ it would be a hit in a setting like that :)

Did all the buttons survive the event by the way ?

So thanks again for dragging that monster. Yes it does look like we might have a bit more recent Bishi this time, IMHO that game would still earn great in some settings but I've never seen them in what is left of arcades etc. overhere.

Anyway, woud be _great_ if Dirk and you can "smack in" two games in the van :D :D

Only one Button showed some 'wear'. The Microswitch couldn't handle the furious 'high-frequence-bashing' any more and has been replaced.
We could bring along the Bishi-Bashi and easily at least one Upright-Cab plus maybe a table or even the small Atari-Time-Pilot.

If its ok with Luigi, the 'Guided Missile'-Cab will do fine. Its a real beauty and features a molded, blacklighted Plastic-Landscape and a mirrored B/W-Image just like SpaceInvaders does.

Goddammit....I have to setup my resto stories Journey and Guided Missile. GM is really a great game......for us bw-enthusiasts at least.... I'm not sure if it's that great for the public tbh. But I'd have no problem to bring it to EC :)  There's still some time left, I will show you guys pics.

Pieter, it's time to stop being nice I guess.....we are a big and important customer for them for that weekend and this should be solved. We cannot keep having to contact them for every booking that goes wrong......not blaming you of course  ;D

And also for retrogame Experience?

erm, YOU wanted to pick what game(s) we will bring ;)

I will buy a Sprint2 that Cebulba will bring to Hilversum. Not sure if it works but if it does we could add it to the exhibition.

Hm,  hard to pick some games from your awesome collection.  Just bring get all!   :D

Zaxxon would be nice,  IMO.  DOT also. Time pilot?  How many can you handle? Every extra cash means one extra free beer by me.

Yes ChrisChris the one and only ! :)

Ow uhmm yes well.......I second DOT, fantastic looking cab and yes the game is great too !
IMHO we really need a Q*bert this year because it was sadly missing last year and people will love it! I know they will especially since his role in Wreck it Ralph. I don't see mine running before the show though and if no-one else is bringing a Q*bert (Bruno ?) that would probably my second pick.

FINALLY a major update my friends !!!

Maybe the most important change is that the this year we will also be using the Blue Room.

The guys who were there last year may recollect that there was an exhibition about the Dutch royals there (yawn) but now that entire area is OURS !!!!

This means that basically everything will be taking place at one level :)

Of course we have both Theater 1 (movies/presentations etc.) and Theater 2 (THE Arcade) again too :) :) :)

Here is a summary of what we have in store for you:

Exhibition and Play:

- Eurocade arcade room (Theater 2), Huge selection of classic arcade games in true 80's atmosphere
- Concolses & Home Computers. We will have more and more varied homecomputers and consoles than last year
- Pac-Man competition, Hi-Score competition for the public, this time on at least two Pac machines
- Before Mario -> Nintendo Toys & Games 1965-1983
- LucasArts exhibition -> 4 displays with LucasArts PC games and playable titles too

Art,Music & Movies

- Supersample - Pixels at an Exhibition -> 28 retro game inspired works of art (these are BRILLIANT !)
- Chiptune artists -> Noedell & Wisefire
- Antiques Game Roadshow -> Have your Retro Game valued by experts
- Movie Programme ->

   - The Wizard (Cult-classic with lots of hidden Nintendo promotion)
   - Space Invaders - In Search of Lost Time
   - Europe in 8 Bits (Chiptune DJ's)
   - Classic game related archive material from the Sound & Vision vaults

Collectors & Experts

- Retro Game Quiz -> 50 retro questions in Theater 1
- Retro Game Market ->Buy your favorite game from the past
- Retro Game Auction -> Bid and win

Workshop - My First Arcade Cabinet -> How to restore a classic arcade videogame
Workshop - Nintendo NES repair -> hosted by Dr.Retro
Workshop - Chiptune and Modding -> hosted by Falicio & Ysbrand

Retro Talk - Easter Eggs -> hosted by Anne Bras
Retro Talk - Rise of Sony Playstation -> hosted by Dr.Retro
Retro Talk - 25 years Nintendo Game Boy ->hosted by Steven Sanders & Magix Buttons
Retro Talk - The Downfall of Sega -> hosted by Dr.Retro

Discussion panel: Retro Games as cultural heritage -> speakers Gaby Wijers, head of LIMA

Cosplayers -> at least 5 cosplayers will add some color to the event :)

Nope !

We stick to Theater 2 for at least the most classic of arcade games, with possibly overflow to the Blue Room, depending of course on amount of offered machines.

We feel that Theatre 2 was absolutely perfect for as "the arcade". We will do our best to enhance airconditioning even more this year ! :)

The Blue Room will have the consoles etc. etc.

Pieter please feel free to add/correct info :)

I kinda agree, but I've only seen the trailers plus, we also have to think of the general public. It is also awesome that we get agreements from them (and also Jeff Von Ward for Space Invaders) for free.
They are proud and happy that we screen the movies for their target audiences overseas.

I think this movie has, in theory at least, a more interesting background story because it follows Richie's life and the consequences of the hobby in his private life. At least that's what I understood.
Always cool to have a back story, just like in KOK.

I wouldn't consider my Hyper Olympic in that condition ;)

I see there is a arcade game contest to vote for the best restored cab as "each of the games is fully restored into original condition inside and ouside"

I wouldn't consider my Hyper Olympic in that condition ;)

That wasn't announced here and in fact, has been dropped. Although it was a cool idea, "general visitors" will not know where and what to look for in a cab restoration. In fact, it probably would turn into "what is your favorite cab" contest and that would miss the goal.

The idea was that instead of always the best players (record players) getting the spotlight, instead now letting the best restorer get into the spotlight and win something.

The second idea behind it (of course) was to get people triggered to bring their nicest machine .....hahaha....yes what a mean idea huh ;)

Although a cool idea, we feel this is more suited for a competion "among collectors". So for now, this has been dropped, sorry guys.

We've added the games offered by Rinus (thanks !)

These are:
- Special Criminal Investigation Sit Down version (!)
- House of the Dead II
- Carnevil

On a more sad note, it looks like Computer Space won't be making it this year. We've had some chances to fix the TV inside of the cabinet but regretfully some essential parts were not there in time because of reasons out of control of the Eurocade team.

Also the machine still has the player ship spinning uncontrolable, another issue which should be solved. However, because of other busy work around RGE/Eurocade and summer holidays we fear there won't be time to get the CS ready in time, sorry.

So, we would really LOVE to have that other early 70's altnernative machine, the one every one remembers as THE machine to launch the video arcadegame madness.......anyone ??

A small but rather nice update: there will be an airconditioning unit for the Eurocade arcade Theater 2 room that has 3.5 times the capacity of last year's unit and it will be set up outside of the actual room. We hope to keep things a lot cooler this way this year !

Too bad Krousti but I understand.

Maybe a cocktail ? I'm asking because we will be setting up a special "cocktail corner" with plenty of cocktail machines to relax and play :)

So, if anyone can't bring an upright cab but _can_ fit in a cocktail table, please do so (remember, free entree, free VIP night !).

Would be awesome if you could make it Bom....I see only one disadvantage.....I'll see BOM on every freaking hi-score table on my machines after the show ;)  ;D ;D

Be nice to that supervisor ;)

I just got a tour around Sound & Vision by Gyruss and he explained how and what there will be there....people.....I'm telling you......it is going to be incredible.....seriously, do not miss it this year, you are going to regret it....

cool to have Bruno.

a small thought , last year , was a bit frustrated , as a guy decided to finish "time crisis" and didn't pass along the gun to the next one in line after dying . Instead he was just bashing the Start button at every game over.

Don't you think it would be good to disable continues where possible ?

Maybe, but people can also play "endless" number of new games. In such cases (or if anything else comes up) please contact one of the Eurocade or Sound&Vision staff who will take neccesary action.

We cannot control all settings of all games but yes in general we prefer to have no continues possible on the games so please adjust your settings if neccesary and the games set to free-play. if the game(s) you bring have no free-play please inform us so we can install a temporary credit button.

I bought a Sprint2 which will be brought to Hilversum by Cebulba. It should work, though the PCB is not installed at the moment. We can give it a try and if it works we can add it to the gameroom, if you want of course :)

Dirk and I talked about the games to bring. DOT and Q*bert was mentioned. We have to see how we get the games into the car. While DOT is a very large cab, Dirk is not satisfied with the shape of Q*bert. I don't know the actual condition but I know the wood is swollen and the t-molding is hanging lose partially. Dirk mentioned some other flaws.....

We talked about Missile Command instead.....another classic that should not miss in such a superb gameroom ;)

André located another 'Bishi Bashi' Cab. It's on the Cab-list. Our Van could handle Cabs up to 1.60m height, so maybe Missile Command, TimePilot or an Zaccaria-Cab could be stored upright, we have to check this out.
The 'Discs of Tron' however is to high to fit in upright. So it tends to a max. of three Cabs (including DOT) or maybe five small ones without DOT.

Yes, again we are SO happy that anyone is willing to take all the effort to bring cabs and whatever you guys decide on, we are most thankful ! Missile Command sure is another classic !

DOT is such an amazing cabinet....Personally I would love to see it on the show, and IMHO it is a much underrated game....but again it is up to you guys. If you think Qbert isn't fit for travel....please don't do it....gotta keep that machine in one piece ! :)

I'm looking at the dimensions of the hanger I use to go to Hilversum. It looks like I can fit another cab in it. But only a small one.

I have a TV Ideal Snow Bros I could bring, it's not a pretty cab (burned screen, but OK when it's in a dark place), but the game is fun to play. I could also put another horizontal game in it, like Ghouls n Ghosts or Tetris.

Just let me know if you want it.

Dear friends, a little practical update:

We have reached 50 entries for the VIP list. This includes everybody who is volunteer, "cab-bringer", crew member, guest etc.

Those who have asked to be on the VIP list are on there right now.

However, the maximum number of VIPs is 70 people.
If you have not yet communicated about coming over/being on the VIP list (especially the Eurocade visitors of the first years) please let me know ASAP, at LEAST WITHIN 5 days from now !!

After that we will CLOSE the VIP list. This is because we must know the number of people joining in for the evening meal.

The meal costs will be €12,50 and includes 1 drink during the meal for those who do not bring a cab. The meal will be held INSIDE the Sound & Vision building, so we will not have to search for a place to eat or have any reservation problems etc. etc. AND after the meal we can quickly go to play the games and have a drink at the bar ;)

I will PM all people on the VIP list with the details, but I need to know who will join the meal and who will not.
Again, if you bring at least one cab you are already on the meal list and do not have to pay for it so you have to eat if you like it or not  ;D ;D ;D

I am going to assume that everybody would like to join in, IMHO it was a fun part of the first Eurocades  but again, please let me know and answer the PM I will send you.

ALSO:

Can everyone who is bringing cabs by their own transport when the expect to arrive ?
We're not pinning you down on a time, but we'd like to plan ahead as much as possible.

Remember, RGE/Eurocade 2014 is THREE days this year, so the Friday we are already up and running. Preferably we'd have the machines arriving on thursday, but of course it is up to you guys bringing the cabs and how it fits in your time planning, so no worries if it will be the friday f.i.
Also, if you plan to leave earlier than sunday afternoon, please indicate so, but we'd prefer to keep the machines up there until the end of the day of course, for both the visitors and practical reasons.

Thanks my friends.

Corrected the message above...

Count me in for the meal! :)

Seriously, we (Dirk and I) discussed about driving on Friday so don't have to start early in Saturday morning and the games are in place when the gates open on Saturday. But now you already open on Friday and we would have to start our trip on Thursday...I'm afraid we will need a whole week off work for the Eurocade/RGE ;)

We will arrive Friday evening...I guess somewhere between 18:00 and 19:00. I also guess that the doors will be closed for the public at this time so we can bring the games in?

Title: Re: >>> Retro Game Experience/Eurocade 2014 <<<

No thankfully no Pac Man interruptions..... ;D

I really like the movie. Sean Tiedemann, the director sent me a preliminary Blu-Ray copy which isn't even out yet. The picture quality is awesome.

The movie is really professionally done, keeps a good pace and covers all the aspects of our hobby really well. I also loved seeing Eugene Jarvis in it.

Richie is a colorful guy, from a European view probably a "typical" American Rock and Roll guy, but the movie makes very clear he is one of us.....a man with a deep passion for classic arcade videogames, who loves to restore them and above all loves to share his passion. I really like how that is portrayed in the movie.

Naturally, this year we won't have a screening on the Saturday evening, but I sure recommend you guys to go to one of the regular screenings, after all there is plenty of time during the weekend and I think you'll like it.

But of course, you'll have to watch it to make your own decision :)

Because we assumed it was for people bringing cabinets....which (very unfortunately) is logistically impossible in our current residence. (Unless we hire cranes and such :P)
But by all means, if there is a spot left   ;D ;D ;D

We prepared the games for the trip (means: we pulled them out of the gameroom to clean and test them) and I found out that we better should leave them at home. Compared to the superb condition shown here in the forum ours have some 'serious' signs of age  :-\

Don't be ashamed for that Thorsten. My Defender has it's battlemarks right on the spot. Perfect restauration doesn't make a difference for the people coming to see our beautys. So f.... the cosmetics and go for the highscores instead. Eurocade is one of the big chances to get your score down on a machine out of your own basement! That was the best in the old days. Crashing scores ... ;)

My experience to reserve the hotel room also didn't go as smoothly as expected:

Basically the number you call to make the reservation (as posted on their site) handles the reservations for the whole hotel chain.
Note: They did NOT have access to see the rooms already reserved for the Eurocade (and told me they were fully booked!)
so I ended up calling with the hotel directly, from that point on it was no problem once I mentioned the Eurocade.

j%^&$R >:(!   Always the same, when i need time i don't get it, this week was full of other shit things so i haven't had time to even screw the missing screws back in because i need to buy them still.

And seeing the other cabs all wrapped up for transport i remembered i don't have wrapping at home and need to buy those asswell but don't have the time to do so. The shop that has those wrapping in big bulk that anunaki told me is in another town. Can't get away from work before it's closed. F*ck!

Do you have to wrapp the cabs? When i got my outruns they weren't wrapped or had anything to protect them.

As you can see i'm not used to do these kind of things, i'm way over my head time/organise wise with this, SORRY guys!

Hopefully i can get the needed screws and find a temporary lock because i miss one in one of the machines. Also remembered as i checked the keys that i don't have one key for the bottom part of one of the machines! so hopefully it's not needed else it needs to be drilled out.

Don't worry, ReBoot...we won't wrap the cabs before we load them into the car. Of course we will use blankets and stuff so the 'signs of age' don't get worse ;)

4 cabs and one cocktail wrapped and loaded in the van:
OutRun
Boot Hill
Kung-Fu Master
Frogger
Crazy Climber (cocktail)

Still working on the Space Zap cocktail (damn Midway Molex)
 I'll bring it with my car on Friday.

Yes, would be better because the cabs will be moved quite a lot in different stages before they are on place, and the same goes for the return route. And we don't want to take the risk of damages. It would be ideal if the games are wrapped when we collect them, we don't want to waste time protecting cabs tomorrow. Therefore protect at least the fragile parts.

But that's the problem, the guys from Eurocade are going to get the outruns tomorrow if i'm not mistaken, so only tonight i can do a bit on it to get it ready, hopefully, just the bare minimum: screws and a lock and a littlebit of cleaning.
Hopefully not overseen other important stuff, like not having new screws or a lock. That was a stupid oversight of me.

Won't touch the main pcb for the dipswitches for freeplay, to scared to mess the working one up for eurocade, although it seems pretty easy to do. Let the pro's do it so it won't go wrong.  :)

Believe it or not, CS has been a guest at my place since last year's Eurocade, wrapped and all. But those days are almost gone, she will shine once again at Eurocade 2014, but then she will definitely have to say bye bye.

And Pac-Man looks especially happy because ......

.... yes, he got a transplantation. The old monitor was carefully removed for a 'brandnew' WG 19K7302. And that shows!  :D

OK, wrapping finished, alien cabs in the wild:

I will get a big van in an hour or so, load the cabs and then drive to the Arcade Capital of The Netherlands.  ;D

I have some cardboard and those green plates that you put under a floor laying around. Can those be used for protection or is bubblewrap plastic the only way to go?

What time are you guys swing by? Maybe i can get bubblewrap (or is it something else) tomorrow before you guys come by.

Some people think I don't like Japanese cabs. That's not true at all.
I saw the Japanese Dariusburst, THE Bishi Bashi and Cho Chabudai Gaeshi and love them....even though I could only see the marquees, but those are AWESOME !

About the third picture......look at those people......EVERYONE loves Centipede, no matter what age :)

Ok I did have to explain how to start a game, how to shoot and move because this nice old lady thought she was actually shooting while the attract screen was showing.......then again......didn't we all pretend to play when we were out of money at the arcades as young kids ? :D

I just fired up the Hyper Olympic and I think the monitor blew. I heared a big knocking sound >:( and the lights went out

I didn't change anything in the powering of the monitor and it was working fine before.

Can something inside the tube make this sound? There is no evidence of damage from the outside or on the chassis

Had the same experience with one of my outruns, worked just fine in 2013, then I turned it on last week because Level42 came by to check them out for eurocade and nothing else than sparks out of the flyback. How come?? No idea  :(

lol, did some measuring, nothinh wrong with the voltages on the monitor

My switching PSU was on 110V instead of 220V  so I gues that's what blew with a bang

I'm going to replace it and fire it up again

Does it plays blind? (Can you hear the game playing?).
Is your monitor's neck glowing?

2 years ago my Space Invaders died just before loading in the trailer.
I wanted to take a last picture of my kid playing with the game before leaving and bam!
PCB died :(

Ah, my fault. I wasn't aware that your cabs will be picked up by the EC team  ::)

Don't worry, ReBoot...we won't wrap the cabs before we load them into the car. Of course we will use blankets and stuff so the 'signs of age' don't get worse ;)

well, just put the pcb in it, no picture, no sound

the game works fine at my bench

I'll do a monitor swap, that should fix the picture, but I have to look into the sound issue. I could change the sound wires to try if it works

That was an exception to the general rule because

a) two Out Run Deluxes can't be moved in anything else than a fucking big van (like we had ;))
b) Reboot lives quite close to Hilversum

Our trip will take ~5hrs so we will arrive in Hilversum ~19:00. Doors are already closed then. Has everybody left the building then? Can we still bring the cabs in or is it better to do it on Saturday morning??? I assume we're not the only ones to arrive that late  ::)

Great to hear you guys are home safe again....and thanks to YOU for bringing cabs.....without your efforts the RGE/Eurocade would be nothing !

Franck, thanks for your compliments and although all of the "crew" did a lot of work, I think it's Pieter (Gyruss) who deserves the most credit by far as he did the vast majority of the work. The Eurocade crew "only" had to do the arcade work, but he had to arrange everyrhing with all contributing parties etc. so, big round of applause for him please, even though I know he doesn't want to stand in the spotlight like that ;)

Back at work (http://www.thludwig.de/pics/smilies/boerp.gif)

Thanks a lot for organizing such a great event! Pieter looked really tired when we left on Sunday evening and I'm sure he's glad that it's over (though there's still a lot to do) ;)  BUT you all and esp. Pieter did a great job!! Far better than last year. It was no problem to let the people play the games 'cause we knew they would be 'ours' on Saturday evening :)  The meal was great and so was the choice of drinks and snacks on Saturday evening.

I hope that Sunday saw the crowd this event deserves! I guess Saturday was a bit poor but on Sunday the rooms were as crowded as last year.

It was also great to meet all you guys again or for the first time, like Vernimark....I hope to see you in the future on one of our parties, mate! :)

I'm a bit sad that Guided Missile died on Saturday evening. Though it could be reanimated for the party it couldn't be played on Sunday :(
But it looked great besides Boot Hill....what an amazing cab and game, thanks for bringing it, Chris :)
DOT and MC survived and I saw several people that looked at the large trackball with eyes almost as large as the trackball  ;D

So: THANKS for a great weekend! It was well worth the effort of loadiung the cabs and driving 5 hrs!

I took some pictures. When there's something interesting that can't be seen on others, I will post it :)

Cheerio :)

big thumb up for Pieter and the EC crew  :pac: :pac: :pac:

I really enjoyed my time there, the organization was top notch , and thanks to the vip party the exhibit was more enjoyable,. The retro hall was really nice. Never though i would see so many Nintendo toys in one area. And lucas arts display was great (with my all time favourite computer game : Zack mc kraken !! :P). I really enjoyed the party and meeting you guys.

favourites cabs: boot hill, Gyruss and the Japanese mini Space Invader. Lovers in dangerous space time is a great discovery (congrats sjaak the cab is great).

Thanks all

Just checked the pictures....I'm afraid the camera was damaged when I dropped it on the floor. Not a single picture in the 'dark' gamerooms is sharp enough to be shown...all are blurry  :'(

The attached picture is the best one...I reduced the size so the fuzziness isn't that obvious...

It was amazing to be at this event on Saturday. ;D

I was in amsterdam this weekend for another mission, but we also came to Hilversum with a new friend Sander (also Nintendo Collector) and good friend of Eric from before Mario

Thank you to all that provided machines, I enjoyed playing SCI Cockpit as I own Same Cabinet but Chase HQ. Was great to Play Discs Of Tron on original machine, it looks amazing

Boothill is amazing game with backdrop, very simple but me and Girlfriend had great fun playing each other

My first go in Star Wars Cockpit too :)

Will post some of our Pictures soon

Great weekend guys, very well organised and nice set up.  Especially the VIP party - all too often in the UK there is no chill out time for exhibitors or organisers at these events.  That was a nice touch.

Bods - never saw you mate, I was there all day Saturday.  Really wish I had booked an extra day tbh.

Oh, I forgot to add Andre,  some crazy Jock swiped the high score on your SW on Saturday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kDhpFaf4EY

Turned out they plugged a phone (or so ?) into an amp and they were making the music by moving a tiny pen (or so) on the screen......right ?

I wasn't there for very long..............I prefer loud chewy 80s music :D

Yes, it's my beloved machine indeed,... and you're totally right: like Space Invaders or that awesome Guided Missile, it has to be played on the dedicated cab to fully enjoy it.

This one just struck me....THAT was the feeling I remember from my first arcade experiences.....for a small kid, such a machine is totally impressing because of size and steering wheel etc.
Look how she's "on her toes" to see over the steering wheel....love that :)

Kids also let their imagination do a lot of work.....I noticed that (again) while I swapped out a PCB set on the SW cockpit and of course the game was off, but this kid inside didn't seem to mind it that much......he was just making his own X-wing noises and and pretending to fly steering the yoke......loved that as that was what we did as kids whenever we were at arcades without money or had just spend the last guilder of our allowance :)

OK....finally some time...

First of all....again, thanks to ALL who have contributed in one or other way...every contribution is important !!!!
Every single cab, physical help etc. etc. are important and made this event :)

However....I do want to specifically mention some guys. I focus on the DLF people here if you don't mind...

Cebulba: you are crazy. Simply crazy. This man single-handedly dragged down several DOZENS (is that right Ol ?) TV's from 2 floors up....he brought a gazillion of consoles and computers, he loaded ALL of it by himself. (And I guess he had to unload when back home again too....) He also framed all the 8 bit artwork the evening before the event (which were very cool to see !!)....and I probably don't know half....man....you are amazing !!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :space ace:

Gyruss: I guess most of you guys realize it, but for those who don't: this man started with RGE 2014 not much time after RGE 2013. I can't think about how much hours he put into the event, yes some of it is his job, but I know he also put in a shit-load of free hours into it (and not just hours). It is no easy task for sure to manage so many parties and apart from that he has to deal with stubborn/hard to handle people like me, and sometimes he had to fight for "the good cause" inside of the organization.

Pieter, big thumbs up, you rock  :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

The other guys of the Eurocade crew: I've said it before: we are so lucky with such a great mix of talented guys. Etienne delivering and setting up the PCs, handling the "background" music, installing free-play buttons (even where not needed sometimes, LOL) and quickly fixing some smaller issues with the Out Run Deluxe.
Robin. This man fixes games before anyone realized they were dead....;) Of course...where possible. He also is not afraid of dragging some cabs ;)
Chris: the man who is responsible for the ever AWESOME Eurocade graphics work, putting a good number of cabs there and "silent force" on about every possible occasion. Erik, a.k.a. our own "truck-driver" the week before and after the event, master of loading (!!!) and general force all over the place.

Maybe the best thing of all....even at the (very few !) moments that things didn't work as planned we stayed (pretty) cool, and we can all still call each others great friends in this hobby. If you go through 5 long very busy days together and there are no arguments at all, no cross faces....then that says a lot IMHO.

Love you guys !  :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

One more special mention, RonaldReagan....he's this "quite guy" that arranges so much "in the background" that you would only probably _really_ notice what he all did if he hadn't been there.  :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

And for the future.......... ?

Well......who knows what the future will hold ?

First we need to bring some cabs home next saturday.

I would lie if there wasn't any talk about the future.......

....but I must say that I also really get a "tingly" feeling when seeing all these pictures again:

Like Level42 said, It was a great event. Overall the quality of every aspect improved a lot compared to last year
the food, the drinks, the airconditioning, the exhibition, the door-reception, the private party, the whole organization, the speakers etc. etc

Only a shame that the trains didnt drove during the weekend, which cause a bit of a lack of visitors. Otherwise the saturday would have been a lot busier and just as crowded as the sunday.

Incredible to realize how much effort/energy some of the organizing people have put in this event. The Eurocade-crew, but also Cebulba for instance, one hell of a crazy German. I think next time, if there is one, someone should make a built-up/set up movie clip trailer like the one of Guns N Roses - Paradise City. So visitors and/or Beeld&Geluid knows whats up.

This year I was able to play way more games than last year. I enjoyed playing Berserk with the awesome Daft Punk soundeffects and Kung Fu which is such a nice arcadeclassic and typical mid eighties with the whole karate/ninja-craze. I also enjoyed playing Frogger

And Thank you Nuno for selling me the Nintendo whatsammecallit-thing for a bargain price. It made the DKjr up and running again and also indirectly helped Robin with his own Nintendo cab problems.

Power Supply Unit :)

Yeah that was just an amazing example of the strength of this forum. Already DKjr had been "written off" for the event and brought to theater1 to act as decor there.

Then I thought.....why not post it on the forum, you never know and if no-one has a spare, we at least tried. Must have been something that exactly Bruno had a spare....totally awesome, and two people in the community helped out with it, gotta love stuff like that :)

The Out Run Deluxe performed almost flawlessly, only a slight problem with the rear speaker and it has been played a LOT :)

Thursday....almost done with the set-up.

I went for "basic" this year. All the machines were on the sides. Last year I thought I couldn't use the walls where the screen was and the wall where the projector window was, but I had a look at the pictures of 2013 and noticed there was enough "clearance" to put cabs there.

I grouped them by brand (hope some of you noticed) as much as possible...

This basic set-up give more floor-space for the people. Even at the busiest moments I think it was never overcrowded.

2nd pic..Etienne & CKONG during set-up...

Star Wars cockpit's left sound channel failed when I did the last check before shipping to Sound & Vision.

I found the problem, it was a broken wire on one of the connectors. Robin (with some help from Erik) managed to replace the pin and got the sound back in full (fake) stereo again, it is SUCH a big difference compared to one channel sound ! :)

Thanks guys ! :)

After the pretty hot temps from last year Pieter promised to get a bigger airco this year....

He wasn't kidding. The guys setting this up had to do quite some work to let the pipe go over the fake ceiling into the "game room"...

After they fired it up I asked if that monster could also run on electricity instead of Diesel, man did that thing made some noise !

Thankfully we had the games, people and not in the last place the 80s and 90s music to over power the noise...and we hid it with a screen a bit :)

Oh and no, the machine was powered off, no rumble seat working here :)

One of the highlights for me was the Before Mario exhibition.

I knew Nintendo started with playing cards (Erik (not our CKONG), the owner of all this great stuff told me Nintendo is still the largest producer of playing cards in Japan) but I never knew they made all this stuff !!!

Was fantastic to see all those games, toys etc. etc.

This is the original Duckhunt :)

Yesterday we transported the vast majority of games that were still at Sound & Vision.
It went very smoothly.

So...with some machines still to be picked up/delivered home, this indicates the definitive end of Retro Game Experience 2014 for the crew.

It was a blast, we may be proud to have done something no-one has done before in our little country.

We had less visitors Ully. Two clear causes for this were that exactly this weekend there were no trains running from the Amsterdam area to Hilversum. Also, the weather was a little bit _too_ nice for an event like this.
The saturday was quieter than last year, the sunday was bussier. This was also thanks to the "Youth journal" on Dutch TV which had a GREAT item about the event. You could clearly see that there were a LOT of families with children the next day because of this...

http://jeugdjournaal.nl/item/697810-pacman-pong-en-space-invaders.html

It shows how important publicity is, you simply have to be lucky with that.

Still, we reached the goal of Sound & Vision in number of visitors and the visitors clearly showed they had a great time.

;D It was....and that was also what did not make it feel like the early Eurocades....however much we tried.
I missed the cosy bar of the marching band clubhouse...and a damn stool to sit on after being on your legs all day instead of "standing tables"...

Well.......who knows what the future brings......but I think it's pretty safe to say that Eurocade (note....EUROCADE) will not return in the RGE shape/form next year.

How/if/when it _will_ return ? Of course we are already thinking of that  ;D

I would vote for Eurocade 2015 in Ridderkerk!

You guys did a great job to make RGE2014 feel more like Eurocade (Thanks again for this!) but to me it's still not the same. Don't get me wrong. I really liked both RGEs. Meanwhile I wouldn't even need cabs....meeting all you great guys is fun enough for me :)

I think Pieter would like to have less work/stress for the next Eurocade as well ;)

This year's EC edition was a real blast, the organizers and the crew made a brilliant job, when I entered the 2 gamerooms for the first time, it simply took my breath away. :spaceace:
The VIP party and the terrace sorrounded with that pond was also great, I really had a great time there chatting with arcade addicts like me. :D
Huge thanks to Erik's wife Marjan and Etienne for picking me up/taking me to the airport, I didn't know, that there are no trains on that weekend, it would have been a giant suck to reach Hilversum. :D

Hi guys,

still have a bad back but right now a few minutes to drop some words on RGE2014.

I had a great weekend although a lot of work beforehand. Too bad I just moved south a few weeks before so I needed to arrange everything in last minute.
@Level42: I count 23 TVs if I remember correctly...and also included a small roadtrip for that Sprint2 the day before.
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/p180x540/10359913_809829399068401_963597352328621197_n.jpg?oh=ca3b8b728e897b35f2f8f750c6bc7aa6&oe=54C18153&__gda__=1421746644_cd01b98538f9cb08cc7df392990ace4f)

At least the setup looked very nice:

I need to get this carpet for my game room :)
(and maybe that Darius...)

Unfortunately I was so busy all the days (watching after kids, explaining games...) - as the whole crew - that I didn't had the chance to meet all DL members in person. See you next time.
@Bruno: You left to early for the CPOs - please keep these aside for me until we meet in the Lair or at Tyrem's place (The Roman arcade).

My special moment: The guy who made an 1 hour adventure of "Dungeons of Daggorath" on my TRS-80. At least one person was patient enough to get deeper into these older games.
(game description over here: http://crpgaddict.blogspot.de/2014/01/game-132-dungeons-of-daggorath-1982.html) (http://crpgaddict.blogspot.de/2014/01/game-132-dungeons-of-daggorath-1982.html))

Note to Leve42: I explained Robotron to several people - either it's the Joust cabinet or the sheer fact it doesn't have a fire button, that only few mastered the controls *g*

One last question: Did anybody recognized the artwork at all I brought with me?
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/p180x540/10659341_810787778972563_7186409568488875749_n.jpg?oh=d19cd0b59bb253eb5cd526f0bb8a3e18&oe=54CA2D8B&__gda__=1421657301_a4606edff1b725344ed820cf28818ad3)

If not - you will have several more chances by 2015 because it will go on tour to Italy, UK, Austria and several larger cities in Germany. Stay tuned : http://www.supersample.de (http://www.supersample.de)

by for now. And count me in for 2015.

Yep I took a little while to "sneek out" and have a look at the art..loved it and watched all of them carefully. As expected I liked some better than others ;) ;)

..with hindsight this may not have been the best place for it...we thought it would make a nice entrance to Theater 1 and everyone going there would see it, but I think most people who came into Theater 1 walked in through the 2nd floor.

The B&G building is brilliant, but it can be pretty confusing inside if you don't know your way around....

Again, you did a crazy amazing job !!! THANKS !!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Does anyone have a pic of Chris's Tournament Table at the RGE ?

Did you guys know that this machine actually runs on a PCB that is based on Atari 2600 hardware ?

Oh and.....I wondered what happened with the video material that Wisse shot during the event :)

I have a few (as you can see I'm the king of blurry pics!).
By the way, I'd like to sell this table… love it but I lack of space  :-\

Didn't know either but somebody posted about it on Atari Museum on Facebook (I LOVE that page, even old Atari developers like Joe Decuir and Dan Kramer are there).

Just checked the Tournament Table manual and it has two TIA's two PIA/6532's and a 6507 !

A 2600 was 1 TIA, 1 PIA/6532 and 1 6507 :)

Of course there was no cartridge so that's where the 3 (EP)ROMs are for :)

Anyway, this may make fixing it a bit easier.....hint hint......

It's cool !

The camera fixed on the moving Out Run didn't work out so well because the brightness of the screen and the rather dark background...I saw him filming that and thought it was an awesome idea.

I'd love to have ALL the video he shot....

Too bad about the VP but as long as you and Grit are there !!!!

Not sure about the 20 sorts of beer this time guys.....some city council regulations have changed and the club probably wants to sell their own beer.....but prices are still very reasonable.....

One note: more than ever we are going to have to rely on people bringing at least one cab.....it's not like RGE where we can get away with a handful of people providing the bulk of the machines....."oldskool" Eurocade relies a lot more on individual cabs so we are going to have to be a bit more "firm" about this....but let's not get ahead of things, first we need a fixed date :)

Awesome Anu !!

I'm a bit sad as this week Europe's favorite Arcade Bar got a new floor.

The old floor was wood and was moved from the old clubhouse (before I was a member) to the the current one......I liked the wood floor for its atmosphere .......if only that floor could talk ;);) (better not ;);))

However it became really really bad, lots of holes that were poorly fixed and it was impossible to keep it clean in a proper way. So now we have a new floor, I don't know what the English word is but we call it "grind vloer", it's tiny rocks set in epoxy AFAIK.

Less atmosphere but for sure more practical....

:-\  i loved the natural "cabinlook" of the wood  :'(

Especially with the cozy rooftiles above the bar.

Anyway, i believe its called Strizo flooring.

We have it in my work's office, and they "poored"  our company logo in it, which is pretty cool IMHO.

I miss the Eurocade logo in the clubhouse floor though ..  ;D ;D ;D

And though rumors say different, no Asteroids Deluxe was harmed during the process of building the cab! ;)

And it was relesed last month, available on steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/252110/
