Look what's going to come over the big waters to me soon:

Does that look sweet or what ?!?!?!?!? Brilliant !
-
So simple... so perfect ... so beautiful :-* :-* :-*
-
totally awesome, andré! i'm sure your puckman is going to look brilliant - can't wait to see the overlay applied!
-
Hey, that's looking really good.
-
Andrè, did they produced that cpo from a file of yours or was it a product?
-
I scanned the artwork myself. First some Australian SCAMMER said he would vectorize the artwork but that never materialized.
(See: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=710.0 )
Then there was GuyDanger on BYOAC forum who offered to do some vector jobs for free as a start to get some demo material on what work he can do.
(see here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=96410.0)
Give this guy some work if you have a project !!! He is amazing !
He did a very good job indeed. However there were a few imperfections (yes, I am anal) but after he put in so much time and effort I didn't want to bother him with it and I found Zorg to be so kind to help me out with the last few improvements.
Then I printed out a test file and tried to fit them on my CP and it looked perfect. So I contacted Rich if he could print the file (of course a "one of" can't be silkscreened so it is inkjet but I'm sure the finest quality inkjet possible). Rich is another great guy in the community (www.thisoldgame.com). Although he found it a bit hard because he didn't have any of the original stuff to match the colors, he did a brilliant job as far as I can see from the pics.
So, this was a project with some very cool guys involved and my huge thanks goes out to them !

The mail man came by tonight (I love "regular" post, I hope they won't change this service, compare to UPS, DHL etc. etc.) to bring a little package:

Now what could that be ? ;D ;D ;D
Video Pinball V2.0 mmmmm, nice cards !!!!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I LOVE IT !!!! BRILLIANT WORK RICH !!!!! (The Kiss patch is meant for a friend who's a big fan)

Time to get out the original !
VERY VERY VERY NICE !
NOTE THAT RICH DID NOT HAVE THE REAL COLORS TO MATCH !!!! HE ONLY HAD SOME PICS OF MY ORIGINAL !!!
So....how do the colors match ?
Well, we have to check with the original and exactly UNDER where the buttons have been protecting it from sunlight. There was even still protective foil there when I removed the buttons so the colors there should be still almost 100% original.

I think it is VERY VERY VERY well done. The blue and the red are as close as you can get IMHO. MAYBE only the yellow is slightly off, but as mentioned, this was done without any direct color matching. I am VERY happy with the result !
Now comes one of the favorite parts of this hobby: removing the old CPO, and they used VERY good glue on the original.....
-
Excellent repro job! I love the crisp design of that CP. I'm always up to do that kind of job for free, don't hesitate to hire me.
-
that's just awesome - rich is a genius! is that the last part of your puckman puzzle, andre?
@chris: i haven't forgotten your email, just give me some time ;)
-
Wow, those colors are spot on. Rich really did some great work. Well, I hope what you have to do with the files I send you recently. ;)
-
Very Nice :o
-
That looks great Andre, you must be very happy! :D
-
Wow that looks awesome :o Good to see such a cab coming back to life. And even better that there is vectorized artwork for this available. Really good job! Enjoy your new mint looking cp ;D
-
finally after all the trouble with our australian friend
Looks great Andre !
-
Wow that looks awesome :o Good to see such a cab coming back to life. And even better that there is vectorized artwork for this available. Really good job! Enjoy your new mint looking cp ;D
Well, it wasn't available, but thanks to Guydanger and Zorg there is now :)
I had already forgotten about our Aussie friend....
This has been running for a long time, but it was worth it :)
-

That's what I'm talking about ;D

So after "cooking" off the CPO, next step is to fill the ugly and now unnecessary original ANd non-original joystick holes:
First I put some tape on the back to form a "backing" for the bondo:
Then FILL'ER UP !
-
don't you want to put something "strong" on the back where those holes were? i'd either weld or glue (epoxy) a piece of metal (or something similar) to the back to make sure that bondo doesn't break off / out! there is some pressure on the metal when you're moving around, so i wouldn't simply rely on the bondo, but that's just my .02
-
Well I figured the holes are so small and the bondo is so strong that it wouldn't be necessary. If it would be button holes I'd agree.
-
Just ordered this hole punch from RS online:
http://nl.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=543-608
To me it seemed a more clear and easy way to make a button hole compared to drilling. I had never heard of this tool before I read about them on KLOV :D
The US guys use 1.125" but 30mm is close enough to that.
-
OK.....well my friends........today it was great weather, the wife was away all day so that meant........hobby time !
Decided to finish the Puckman panel because....the wonderful CPO deserves so.....
First I sanded the CP:
Since the panel was never painted before I completely sanded it all over...
2 layers of primer, 2 layers of black paint...
Applied CPO, went pretty well:
Look how nice the color of the (fully restored !) original Midway Pac joystick matches with the CPO and buttons !!
Does it look great or what ? I'm so proud that all the sizes were EXACTLY right ! Pretty amazing considering all the variables possibly involved...
Soooooo....next step is creating the extra hole for the extra button. I had doubted wether I should make the hole before I painted and installed the CPO, but thought this way I could get an exact position....so pilot hole drilled, first 3 mm, then 10 mm.
Install the hole punch exactly in the center....
And then as I started turning in the hole punch............well words are not neccesary:
[INSERT ALL THE WORST CURSE WORDS YOU CAN THINK OFF HERE PLEASE]
So....what went wrong ?
Well...the hole punch has two sharp "points". I thought they had "grabbed" enough so that they wouldn't turn.....but they did and doing so it tore the CPO around the projected hole .....
Sigh....
Madly I tore the complete CPO off. I did finish the hole though....at least I've got it at the right spot Ha-ha-ha.....   :'( :'( :'( :'(
Well.....I guess rich still has the file....A costly mistake indeed.
While I removed the CPO I also discovered that the primer hadn't set very well to the metal. Most parts the metal was completely bare again when I pulled it off. This was an el-cheapo primer and I'm going to ditch it ASAP.
I do think I may have been a little bit too impatient to do all the steps pretty quickly after another. I should have allowed to let the primer, the black paint and the CPO to cure much longer. But I had time now and I was on a roll so....
O well...Rich is getting a new order.....
-
damn, that totally sucks. i know how you must feel, because when i removed my pac-man stencils something similar must have gone through my mind, but it turned out nice eventually. as you've stated, patience often is the key, something i too often lack myself. now you have the holes (and the time for a new paint job), you will get there in the end. good luck, andre!!!
-
:o :( I'm sorry for you André, unfortunately things like this sometimes happen.
But fortunately you know where to get a new one. :) And in the meantime you have time enough to repaint the CPO and let it harden out.
-
Damn! so close, yet so fare... :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
I have ordered a set of these special drills..... i hope they will ease my drilling jobs:
-
Aouch, that sucks but shit happens... and the next one will be sooo perfect.
It's very thoughtful of you to share that story here so that hopefully it won't happen to others.
Thanks for that, André!
-
Yeah....I have no problems sharing my failures. I share my successes so I think I should also share my failures...:S
So....to ease my mind.....I was just playing a couple of Ms.Pac Man games....
After about an hour the machine goes "plop". Screen crashes, everything dies....
I smell something....it's close.....Ah....it's the marquee area.....the tube and transformer feel VERY hot....
Actually I'm happy, this time it's probably a blow fuse because of that....not the PCB.
Anyway, this appears just not to be my day, I'm going to bed !
-
that sucks bigtime! I hope it's just a fuse! >:(
-
Not your day......
sorry about that !
I remember last time i was there i told you i smelled something "electrical"....
maybe the mrs was already warming up back then ?
-
I hate it when that happens ???
maybe I missed this but why did you punch the hole after?
Ill work on getting you a replacement ASAP.
-
Believe me.....I hated myself just as bad when it happened...I was SO happy with how it turned out, the colors, the position of everything, for a non-color and size matched CPO it was SO perfect....I'm sorry man....
Well....the only real reason was that I tried to get the extra button hole on the exactly correct position. And that I thought the hole punch had grabbed the metal enough to not start turning, but it did....
Another lesson learned. Thanks so much for printing me another one Rich, you're the best !!
-
HOLY MOLY You must eat :P
-
HUGE THANKS to Rich.....since he had to print out a new CPO anyway, I kindly (and modestly) requested if he could adjust the yellow color a tiny bit. I sent him a picture as a reference. Yeah yeah I know about colors not being true on camera's, but that's exactly why I chose Fuji. IMHO they have the best color rendition I've seen so far.
Also: it is just to give an idea what should be changed.
Anyway, GREAT that Rich wants to do the effort. Even better: this time he's sending me TWO cpo's "Just in case" !

Sorry guys but I just have to shout for a moment.....ahhh that relieves a bit........

oh no, what happened? is it time for ...
DISASTER GIRL?

-
Please let it be noted that this was not pointed to any member here or anyone else in the arcade community......just a cry of frustration......
These Puckman CPO's just seem to be cursed....
I'll explain later....
-
damn, that girl looks EVIL!
-
damn, that girl looks EVIL!
that's because she's disaster girl - wherever she appears, disaster strikes!
-
These Puckman CPO's just seem to be cursed....
doesn't sound too good, sorry to hear! :'(
-
did you try the punch again ?
-
OK I'm stupid, but not THAT stupid. Also the hole is already there now....no need to do any more punching....
There is just some problem with the artwork that is probably nobodies "fault".....it's just not like that I can use it now....
I just e-mailed Rich about it and first want to wait for his reply, seems the decent thing to do. Rich is great, I'm sure we'll solve it.
-
Well, received the 4th and 5th copies of this Puckman CPO ever created.
To refresh memory:
1) I f-ed up the first one so I ordered a new one with Rich
2) He sent me two this time ( to make sure, at no extra charge !), but there was a problem: there were small black spots scattered throughout them. Even though the spots were small, the huge contrast between the black and the artwork was really totally visible at first glance. So I mailed Rich about it, and of course he agreed that this was not up to his standards and would sent me a new set.
3) So he sent me two again, and they are absolutely great
Just moved the CP inside the home to get it at room temperature...installation tonight !
Just have to say Rich was brilliant in this (as always). I screwed up the first CP myself. I did pay for a new one, but he sent me an extra copy. When it turned out there was a problem with those, he replaced them right away. He even improved the yellow color a bit further. SO, as always: www.thisoldgame.com is highly recommended !
-
I wish you luck tonight André, but now that you know what you are doing, the result will be very rewarding, I'm sure.
-
is the screwed up cpo still in place ?
If so, we will have another great session of seriouse CPO Cooking ;D
-
Nope, that was removed instantly (glue not totally dried (obviously!) so it was easier to take off right away).
Also didn't want to have to look at that embarrassing sight anymore.... ;)
-
good luck, andré! good to know that you have two tries this time ;) hopefully disaster girl won't have to show up ...
-
Hey-guys-it's only sticking a freaking CPO to a CP.......I've done it a number of times before.
The hole is of course already in there now, so no more hole-punching required.....
-
OK.....
It's time for a small tear.....
+TURN ON OBAMA SPEECH SOUND+
Because, my friends.....this is a story of true greatness. Man has gone to the moon. But here, we witness another great strengh in what humanity can achieve with willpower, endurance and faith. Faith in brothers who help eachother in times of need.
+TURN OFF OBAMA SPEECH SOUND+
I almost forgot how long this has taken.
Let's rewind to 15 april 2009 (!!)
Everything about this CPO started right here on this forum:
https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=710.msg6087#msg6087
I had scanned the CP and a friendly guy from Australia (well, so it seemed) called Dexter offered to vectorize the Euro Joust Marquee. He actually did some great work on it. In the middle of that story, I asked if it would be possible if he could also do the Puckman CPO (as it was much simpler to vectorize).
In return to his work and efforts, I sent him some very nice Atari Jaguar DL/SA games I had found for his collection (yes I paid them AND shipped them at my cost) in good faith. His "famous last words" in that thread are actually pretty funny now: I will be in touch.
HAH ! He disappeared but not before f-ing some other people in the community.
Somehow, I hope he lives in Queensland....
But, let's do away with all the negativity....because after this failure I turned to the BYOAC forum. There was a guy named Guydanger there who offered to do some free artwork to get a start in freelance artwork...so I gave it another shot:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=96410.msg1015608#msg1015608
This time I hit the jackpot, and he did some really, really great work.
It was almost perfect.
But almost was not quite good enough. I still noticed some errors here and there.
Then the third guy came into the picture (because I really didn't want to bug Guydanger anymore). His name is the well known Zorg from France.
Zorg was kind enough to fix all the errors I noticed. He was really patient and we went through a lot of comms to get everything straight.
But it really payed off in the end. Zorg still hosts the finished files, both with the original all yellow circle between the ghosts AND the one mad for those who want to install a button right there (like me ;) )
Then.....someone had to print it of course. Now, in this moments, the first man I think of is Rich from ThisOldGame.com
The first contacts I had with Rich were about the Galaxian CPO has was making at the time. I asked what file he was working on, and I found some errors and we had some great comms about it. (Even after that there were still some errors in the first print, but those have been fixed now too).
Anyway, if someone would be up for it, it would be Rich....
However, as he indicated, he had nothing to match the colors to. I didn't have any scrap parts anymore, so I suggested that we would use my pictures as reference and "gamble" on that. It worked out great. The red(ish) color and the blue were spot on. Only the yellow was a tiny bit off, but nothing terrible.
The rest you know and I won't repeat.
Here is the final result (drumroll please:)
Now.....who would have gone through such lengths for a freaking BOOTLEG CPO ? :)
Well, I don't regret at all, the result is fabulous IMHO !
Look at how that original Midway Pac Man joystick is mounted !!! "Look Ma, no carriage bolts !" HAH, not even the original Puckman or Pac Man or Ms.Pac Man had that.... (mmmm, yes that's the other guy who I have to thank, the friend who welded those wire-ends to the CP...love it (AND IT'S METRIC WOO-HOO !).
O.....and I almost forgot that I got that EXCELLENT original Pac joystick from Spyridon, completely for FREE !!!! He didn't even want me to pay the shipping costs !!!!
So, a BIG thank you to all you excellent people for getting this done.....I'm touched ! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
;D
-
Oops almost forgot: Ully arranged the powdercoating of the joystick !
So there it was, people around the world of helped in this, Australia (ahum), the US, France, Germany and all for this nut from Holland :P
-
If anyone is tuning in (Zorg ?) there is only one suggestion to change in the files:
Make the hole area for the joystick inverted (black). This way, it isn't too noticeable when the hole is not 100% exactly centered. Also the cross-hatch in there seems to be not in the center of the circle.
-
:spaceace: You did it, and it looks stunning. Congratulations.
Next step in the do-it-yourself: stenceling the ms. pac-man cab? :)
-

First: Looking fantastic Andre !
Second: How bout that Marquee ? is it done, or do you still need "someone" to do the vector job ? ;)
-
@Etienne: Well, if someone is bored and has enough time....... ;) ;) Looks like a nightmare to vectorize though....but I'd surely accept a good raster version too.
@Ckong: Nah.....I've got another job waiting now....something with a tube and some PCB's and some SW stuff...... ;)
-
Next step in the do-it-yourself: stenceling the ms. pac-man cab? :)
my next big investment is going to be a compressor and an airbrush set (or whatever this is called). i'm tired of this stupid paint rolling thing, it sucks!!! i'll hopefully be trying it out on my taito bubble bobble cab, let's see if i manage to find some good equipment until then. that area is vast and needs a lot of researching time first!
-

you mean this way ? (I applied the same thing to the button holes.)
you are right about the cross-hatch, it's now corrected.

Looks fantastic! Nice touch with the joystick mounting. 8)
Actually the genuine Namco Puckman machine has no visible carriage bolts on the CP. It's mounted to a piece of metal under the plexi bezel. Looks sleek 8)
(Of course the dust washer is on the wrong side of the CP in my example picture :P)

first of all: i liked your obama speech a lot, spoken like a true president!
the overlay looks totally kickass, those two ghost on the left intending to push the button are fabulous. unfortunately, the overlay doesn't cover the button hole entirely so that the black from underneath can be seen a little bit, but i guess this is only visible from the left and in daylight, noone will notice it in the gameroom - hopefully. i'd love to see a picture of that control panel on the cabinet "in action" - gives us a full body shot, andré. i mean from the cabinet, not from you ... ;)

Yeah you're right about the yellow button. I fact, I'd love to have a yellow button that is the same size as the res/pink/purplish (what color is that anyway) one's that were originally on there. They are just a bit larger than the usual US buttons....
It would fully cover the button hole so you wouldn't see that.
However, I have VERY little problems with how it is now. The fact is that it is already AMAZING how this turned out, but simply scanning the original, measuring everything BY HAND and hoping and praying for the best. Same as the color matching.
It turned out much much better than I had ever hoped for !
Body shots will have to wait a bit....got some other priorities right now...
-
looks kick-ass! :)
-
It looks so fresh, I wanna eat it.
Wondeful job!

i have to admit: it looks AMAZING. i love the entire puckman-style, this is a fantastic-looking cab you have there, andré!!!

Thanks guys....
One more thing, just to remember where it came from:

Heh-heh............I found a mistake. It's tiny, but I now see it......
Not that I'm going to do ANYTHING again, I'm very happy as it is, but there is a tiny mistake in there.....
Free foot-trip to Rome for the guy who spots it....
-
i wanna walk to rome. right pac-man - there's a black line which wasn't there originally!
-
Bingo !
But the reason is more "shocking".....look closely at the original. Only the lower left "muscle" Pac has that extra little black dot. So it was a damage/spot on the original that shouldn't be there at all. Unluckily this was copied to the right side of the button.
Not a major thing and I won't loose a second of sleep over it, but Zorg if you're reading this, maybe it could be deleted for archival's sake ;)
-
one thing i dont get is why the top pac dont have it, i mean i guess the creator copied thatone also right ?
or did he delete it in that pac ?

can you provide more pics of for the namco Puckman (cpo, bezel, side art etc )
do you have acces to a genuine Namco PuckMan ?

an easy to do modification.
