Title: The Storage™
Post by: Superully on June 01, 2010, 06:28:42 PM
i've been dropping cabs into The Storage™ for the last couple of months without arranging them properly. the place belongs to my good friend patrik and is used to store a harvester for his father's agriculture. however, normally there is a nice huge raised wooden space reserved for my cabs behind the harvester, but when his father "parked" the machine at the end of the last farming season, he didn't do this very well, so we weren't able to bypass the harvester anymore with the trolly to get the games behind it. with the battery taken out of the engine for its winter sleep, all we could do was drop the games in front of it. now that the summer season is about to begin and the harvester will soon be needed again, we decided to remove the cabs, drive out the harvester and put my cabs where they are stored much better. :)

let's get this show going!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

some of the cabs out in the open - you should have seen the looks of the kids passing by :o :o :o

here's the harvester which has been blocking the access

first row from left to right: stratovox, a generic tv ideal (which i want to get rid off), out run mini, german donkey kong, qix and tank

second row from left to right: death race, atari basketball, breakout, night driver and rampage

third row from left to right: domino man, galaga, ms pac-man, championship sprint and pac-land

who needs workout at a gym when he has tons of arcade games to move around? ;D

view from the top - what a sight! :-*

we've arranged the games in The Storage™ roughly in the order i'm planning on bringing them up into my apartment to get the full restoration treatment! my estimate for The Storage™ to be empty is the year 2017 ...  ;)

I am impressed, truely. One question: how many cabs do you have in total now? Are you planning to have them in sort of a gameroom, or is your apartment the final resting place for these beauties? Or are you planning to make a gameroom in your apartment?

Anyway, I will have to visit you sometime to check out (and play on) your great cabs.  :D  I hope that I don't have to wait until 2017

how many cabs do you have in total now?

i've just updated my klov / vaps account (http://www.arcade-museum.com/members/member_detail.php?member_id=401475): 35 games in total  8) :-*

Are you planning to have them in sort of a gameroom, or is your apartment the final resting place for these beauties? Or are you planning to make a gameroom in your apartment?

let me start at the end: no, i'm not planning on making a gameroom in my apartment for one important reason: i will be changing the school where i'm teaching either this or next year, which also means i'll be moving out. the place where i'm living right now is big (and cheap for the size of it), but the location is far from perfect and i don't even have a balcony or a garden for my cats. however, i've said multiple times to my friends that i'm only going to move one more time for the rest of my life, which means wherever i'm moving next - THIS IS IT!!! this location will have to be chosen extremely well, because i need a huge gameroom and a garden. whether i have to build something for the games or whether i find a house with a huge basement (which i would prefer) - i don't care, as long as it can house all my games :). i'm sure i will find something in the end, and if i don't, i can still sell off my games - who cares about moon patrol? ;) ;) ;)

What an awesome sight, you will need one hell of a room for all those games :o
I used to have the same generic tv ideal (with Hyper Olympic) as you have. I even asked you some questions on KLOV about it. Glad I got that ugly piece of junk out of my house (still like Hyper Olympic though) ;D

news from The Storage™:

because it's time to harvest the corn next week and the harvester needs to be cleaned inside the shed, we need to protect my machines from all the flour particles that will be flying around wildly. in order to do so, i've bought a couple of huuuge plastic tarps which we are going to put on top of the machines. let's fold them up first because otherwise they are too big to handle!

fortunately, patrik's daughter ronja is a lightweight and she l-o-v-e-s :-* climbing on stuff, therefore she's the ideal partner for the task of pulling the tarp over the machines

halfway there!

we need another tarp to cover the rest of the games

mission accomplished :spaceace:

because the harvester is going to be cleaned with compressed air, we need to add some weight to those plastic sheets!

thx a lot, ronja! it would have been much more difficult without you :)

all the holes have been stuffed!

bring on the harvest

You already have my deepest sympathy for the day you will be moving to the new house....carrying all the cabs you have upstairs (how many, about 12 or so ?) back down again will be one huge exercise !

Just for fun, call in a professional moving company to request a price for the removal, I'd love to see the sight on his face when he comes into your living room and you saying, this stuff all needs to be moved  ;D ;D ;D

agreed, not to forget the owl that lives inside that building :ghost:. hopefully i will find a house with a gigantic basement over the course of the next two years which would solve that problem - let's see!

i've been thinking about this a lot, andre! it's not that i'm afraid of the cab's weight and the stairs, i'm more afraid of the damages that might occur to my restored machines while carrying them down over those staircases and around those bends. that's why my plan of attack for now is to wrap the games in cardboard and plastic and have them transported down professionally by something like this:

of course, this is going to cost more money than the pizza i'll have to buy for my "mover friends", but it'll be much faster and hopefully better for the games!

That truck is maybe a little too much  :D
something like this you can rent here in holland for +- 125€ / hour

i think you can get the stuff down in one hour i think ?

i cannor imagine the costs of the truck you showed  ;D

thx! that's exactly what i've been thinking of, etienne, but i don't know the correct term for it, therefore the wrong picture ;). the firm from which i rented the van for my england roadtrip also has one of the machines you pictured, i'll probably go with them because they are nearby and it shouldn't take more than 1 or 2 hours to get the job done.

while i was at the storage today waiting for a game to be picked up (yes, i actually sold one :D), i unpacked the q*bert to have a firsthand look at the game

all in all, i'd say the machine is in average condition: the bottom has probably suffered some water damage and basically all the artwork stuff (except for the marquee) needs to be replaced. nevertheless, the price was ok (but stellar, but i can live with it) and there's nothing there that can't be brought back to life!

The risk with NOS artwork is that the glue is basically useless after so long in storage so you need to start playing with your own adhesive etc…

But Arcadeshop sell only the sidearts or not  ???

nope, i've asked stephen, they also have the frontart set (cpo and front), it's just not listed, but definitely available. as colin stated, the glue might be a problem with NOS artwork and since i have to order from arcadeshop anyway, i might as well order that set along. it's more than half of the NOS stuff. i know, it's a reproduction, but from my experience arcadeshop quality is just great!

hey and don't forget:
- Translucent leaf switch push button (short) RED - 2 x $3 = $6

thx for the tip, max, i will have to check the status of the ones on the machine first though!

went to the storage again today to check on my youngest baby, i'm afraid it'll crawl away if it doesn't get enough attention, love and tenderness :P :-*

anyway, here's the famous knocker we've been talking about that much - note that there is a fuse missing (however, a couple of fuses are lying at the bottom of the cab)!

rusted original power supply - i'll most likely install the switcher kit from arcadeshop which eliminates a lot of issues

@etienne: are you going to reproduce those gottlieb stickers as well? do we have a better template than the rest which is on my cab?

I can take that also, but i do need the rest of the etiket, i can only guess a little of the missing part...

so if you manage to fine me a source, i can still make that.

honestly, i don't think that's water damage. most of the q*bert cabs look like that because of the poor wood they used and because they didn't "extract" the leg levelers far enough!

a new guest has moved into the storage at the weekend - a european qix cabinet! in fact, this is my second qix cabinet, but the first is in worse condition, wiring harness / control panel have been hacked and i don't have a bezel or a marquee for it. so when sascha put his cab up for grabs (along with a second qix boardset), i immediately jumped for it. the cab is in very good condition, just a few dings on the sides. control panel, bezel and marquee are PERFECT, once i have the space to work on multiple games at the same time this should be done in less than a week! enough said, here are some pictures

the sides are going to need a few touch-ups, but apart from that nothing major! :)

as a comparison, here's the left side of my other qix taito cabinet

much worse, would be quite difficult to touch up the art on this cabinet

but the structure itself is very solid

as i've said: no marquee, no bezel and a hacked control panel!

well, what am i going to do with the second cab you might wonder? the thing is: there are no stencils for the euro taito cabs (yet), so i'm going to scan the sides and ask brian from gamestencils.com to cut me some stencils. my idea is to completely repaint the second cab with a different color scheme and put in a taito game which came as a kit only: arkanoid! there is some crazy kickass-looking arkanoid artwork out there which will help me turn this second taito cab into a nice little jewel! :-*

So, what's inside? :)

i guess it's time to reveal - but first the story behind the deal!

more than three months ago, bruno posted a le bon coin space wars ad (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2282.msg41908#msg41908) on the forum. space wars are already damn rare in europe, but this one was a version noone had ever seen before - a spanish version created by sonic. although i'm a huge fan of the original cab design, the artwork on the spanish version simply rocks! i was thrilled from the first moment i laid my eyes on that cab, but of course there was a downside to it: it was located in freaking southern france, in perpignan to be more precise, almost 1200 kilometers from my place. because of that, a roadtrip was out of the question. i got in touch with the seller nevertheless, but was told that the cab had been sold to someone else already, so i quickly forgot about the game (did i really?). move forward two months ... a few days before christmas the ad popped up again on "le bon coin". once again i contacted the seller and asked what had happened. obviously the original buyer did not pick up the cab, so i immediately seized the chance to grab it the second time around. there was only one problem: how the heck should i get the game up here to germany?

i got in touch with kevin "hatster" from southern france who's a good friend of dave the deliveryman (the guy who transported the 20+ nos monitors around europe) and asked if he would be heading up north anytime soon. the answer was YES! dave had planned a trip to england in late january / early february, so i asked christophe (the space wars seller) if it would be ok for him to keep the game until then and he agreed - he even agreed on a lower price :).

some days later, when i got back from a relaxing day in the sauna, i read about the closing and the cab sellout of the arcade barn in the uk!

although i was sad to read that such a great arcade had to close down, i also saw the opportunity to get some more games i was looking for. i would probably not have gone for them if i hadn't known that dave was going to get some games from the arcade barn for kevin anyway and therefore i asked him if he had enough space in his van to squeeze in a few more games besides the space wars. once again, the answer was YES!

my initial plan was to ask rav if i could have the games stored at his place for a later personal pickup, but i also asked dave if it would be possible to transport the games directly to my place in germany. i guess three times a charm, his answer was YES! :)

after a week on the road, it is finally time to open up dave's van (one more note in advance: the robby roto on the left is not for me)

as i've said before, there are no pictures of the actual unloading process because noone was around to take pics (well, who is at 10 o'clock in the morning on a weekday?). therefore, here's game number two already at its (current) location inside a storage. ladies and gentlemen, may i present to you ...

here are those two games side by side - isn't it a wonderful sight?

but we're not done yet because there's another game in dave's van which needs to be unloaded!

to further my atari system 2 collection (which already consists of paperboy and championship sprint) i got myself an APB - All Points Bulletin. and because i didn't want the cabinet to stand around at by itself in the storage ;), i put it right next to my space invaders

my austrian friend alex got himself a dedicated frogger in pretty good nick (with a willis cpo installed) which of course i will store for him until a later personal pickup!

all the games are working (or at least they were before they were hauled all across europe) - it's "only" a matter of cosmetics now (and a gameroom :P)!

i have to thank dave and especially kevin for arranging the pickup / delivery and for all those live updates i received during dave's way up north to england and down south again to germany! this deal would not have bene possible without you!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Hope you can make some more pics (inside and out) of the SPace Wars !!

APB I once played when the Atari Lynx was new but I didnt really understand it back then...arcade versions are always better....  Confrats !!!

thx andré! i just HAD to save it, at least i wanted it up here and not down in southern france in some garage. i've already talked to andreas about it, if i decide to sell it, he will gladly take it out of my hands. from what christophe told me, it is working, but he said something about the screen being wobbly. his english was not the best, so i honestly didn't understand 100% what he was trying to tell me :D.

here's a couple more pictures christophe sent me, left side looks much better than the right side, the inside looks pretty clean. i will head over to the storage again today and check out those boards. i can't take better pictures from the outside for now because it's pretty cramped right now - i really have to re-arrange the games inside the storage, but i will wait until the temperatures have reached acceptable levels - like 42° ;).

if we move the harvester out and park it in the street ... A LOT!!! ;D

but of course this is not going to happen. as i've said, i need to do some re-arranging when it's warmer and then i can squeeze in a few more (i'd say 10 - 15). patrik is already planning on building a second level for the games, but honestly i have (and really want) to slow down a bit, i've bought too much stuff in december and january with the closing of arcade barn, the archer bulk buy and the ship raid. i just can't resist, i'm too weak :P

i'm planning on taking a month off from the hobby, going on holidays in june (haven't been away for three years) and let everything settle down a little bit - i might eventually sell a game or two ... ;)
Title: Re: The Storage™

Yeah, this must be a licensed version, everything looks very original. Only difference I see that they moved the heat-sinks from the monitor outside to the inside.

Indeed I love sheets and little things like that !
You can see that this sheet was normally for pinball machines :) And it was initially apparently intended for another country than France, since they marked it out....

That kickplate artwork is brilliant indeed !

The right side seem to have faded a lot....but even if you don't restore anything on the outside, it still looks great !
I would remove the game PCB's at least and store in your home....this is no "average" hardware....

patrik's asking me all the time if i don't want to build my gameroom in his barn, BUT i want to be able to enter my gameroom whenever i want in whichever clothes i want and not have to drive there for a couple of minutes!

so Ully, how many cab's do you have atm, or are you afraid to talk about it? ;D ;)

why should i be afraid to talk about it? 8) i know it's crazy, i know i'm crazy, but my gigantonormous gameroom vision still stands and as long as i don't know where i'm going to end up, i will hold on to that dream. and my plan of retirement at the age of 50 still stands as well, so i definitely won't get bored then ...

as for the games, there are some conversion kits (e.g. system 1) and convertable cabs (e.g. bubble bobble, arkanoid) included in the count, but i'm coming close to 70 now :o i'm pretty sure i'll have to sell some eventually, but for now who cares? :D. by the way, you can always check my vaps account (http://www.arcade-museum.com/members/member_detail.php?member_id=401475) for an updated list of my games (well, almost updated)!

just got back from the freezing storage!

Did you notice the weird place for the "type plate"?
Top left corner in front of the bezel, don't forget to make a macro-shot of that :) Wonder if it says "licensed from" or anything....

bad news first: that plate is no longer there, it must have got lost on the cabinet's long journey from france via england to germany (dave had to unload it at rav's place in between), so unfortunately i'm afraid it is gone, lying alone somewhere on the road ... :'(

BUT let's have a look at the back of the cab. someone screwed a not so original rude metal bar to the top of the cabinet

as you can see, it runs right across the license plate

i'm immediately removing it to see what lies beneath - nice! :-*

inside i discover something incredible! remember that inspection sheet and the crossed out country of destination field?

i had a closer look at that field and could make out where the game was supposed to go originally: A-L-E-M-A-N-I-A! i guess the game has finally come home - after more than 30 years!!! :) :-*

as suggested by andré, i also removed the boards for storage in some warmer climate

and here's what i had already suspected - original cinematronics boards!

but there was another surprise inside - a nice plastic bag containing some sheets of paper

let's see what we've got: first, a temporary cinematronics manual along with the schematics

up next, some information about the boards and the monitor

and finally, a complete wiring diagram for the sonic space wars version :spaceace:

as you can see, the diagram "copied itself" from being folded up inside the plastic bag through all those years, but everything is still readable!

i'm more than happy with my decision to bring the game home to germany :)

oh, i forgot to mention that a.p.b. also came with the infamous chair

however, as you can see, it is in horrible condition, artwork totally destroyed, seating area cracked, severe damage to the wood ...

... and the whole thing is falling apart!

at least it is a base to work with, but this needs restoration from the ground up - but I'm happy that I have it, it's like having a Battlezone with the step!

The Storage™ had become a dumping ground lately: games were just being dropped off at the front of the shed without filling up the holes in the back! so patrik and i decided to rearrange stuff to make space for new arrivals ... 8)

i'll also be selling / trading a couple of games, for example we moved the german donkey kong to the very front from where it (hopefully) will soon be picked up by its new owner

now let's move all those other games down the aisle

a walk amidst giants!

we could have done a little better (wasted around 2 cab spaces), but with the giant harvester still in hibernation in front of the cabs there's only so much working space you have. for now, here's what The Storage™ looks like after shuffling cabinets around for 1 1/2 hours

i can't wait for the day to come when all those games will be transported to their final destination: superully's elektro arcade  (aka superully's elektrocade)

here's an update of what's going on in The Storage™ at the moment!

first up, in an effort to thin out my collection (because i've come to realize i'll never be able to restore / display / maintain all the cabinets i have), i've sold four more games which were picked up yesterday. however, i'm not really crying about those cabinets leaving, because (a) i know they're in good hands with their new owners at for amusement only (http://for-amusement-only.de/index.php?id=10) (b) they will be maintained / played there (c) their location is not too far from my place, so i can go there and play them when i have the urge to do so!

here's a couple of (uncommented) pictures of yesterday's pickup

Did the Night Driver go too ?

yepp, it did, it was the hardest one to let go, because of the way it got into my hands, because you did such a great job getting this for me and because of the rarity of the cabinet, BUT sometimes you have to make tough decisions (like you did with your hard drivin') - this definitely was one. however, i've based my decision (apart from the fact that i sold it for a good price and that it went into good hands) mostly on the criteria that i'm simply no racing game fan (therefore i also sold the PP cockpit) AND that it just isn't a game i wwould play a lot. almost identical reasoning behind video pinball (the name says it all) and breakout - i'd rather have an arkanoid.

hope you're not mad about my decision to sell it ...

not quite, basically i'm going up one level to have them all bunched together and to make them more accessible (without having to move that stupid harvester). but the main "motivation" behind it was my friend patrik who just had his fourth child (to be more precise: his fourth daughter :D). he wants to turn one of the storage rooms into a playroom for his children, therefore he had the idea to move my games somewhere else. although this means some work, the result will be worthwhile all the efforts in the end - hopefully ... :P

anyway, when i arrived at the storage after school, the scaffolding had already been set up!

let's climb up that ladder ...

man at work!

i didn't take a lot of pictures, because my help was needed for the construction, but at the end of the first day we were about 1/3 done

for now, we're only doing half of the upstairs level, because it will be more than enough for my current "storage cab lineup", but it's good to know that we can expend whenever we feel the need to do so! by the way, the games will (probably) be lifted up with the help of a forklift truck once construction is done, later we're going to use a pulley to get the games up and down!

I´m wondering, will there be a day somewhere in the future, let´s say over 25-30 years, that a lonely adventurer, explorer and barn shed raider will go and wander of to long forgotten and crumbled down places and buildings and then ....... discoveres a huge collection of great, yet unrestored, cabs, never touched by hand of man for the last 25-30 years.  ;) ;D  It might give us, by then (very) old guys, still great road trips reports to read.  ;D

But on a serious note Ully, if Patrick is turning the ground level into a playing room for the kids, then that would mean that there will be an electricity plan and heating. And the upper floor looks like a good place to turn it into a game room, with the necessary insulation works etc. of course. Could you not make a deal with Patrik which makes you able to actually turn the upper floor into a game room. As I said, heating and electricity should be nearby and should be pretty easily be extendabel to the upper floor. I guess you will need heating anyway to avoid damp and humidity during the winter.

agreed! now "all i need to do is restore it" ... :P

regarding the function of the game: it's not working when plugging it in, but rav had the boards on his test bench and they're working there. it's definitely a power supply problem, someone has hacked in a switcher, but the wiring is a mess, so this will probably be something i can fix myself!

let me quote myself from another thread

as for my nintendo row, i'm still missing a few games i'd like to add (e.g. radarscope and sheriff), but one can't have it all, can you? btw, i forgot punchout of course - must have one 8)

believe it or not, only a few days after i posted this (if i remember correctly the number is 3), a nintendo game shows up on ebay classified ads. the description was poor, no original pictures, but only screenshots, so i didn't even know whether he was selling just the pcb. got in touch with the seller via phone, asked for some pics, phoned again and sealed the deal. the only problem was: the machine was basically located at the end of the world, but i know someone who lives there ;) - toralf "timepilot" to the resuce. i asked him if he could pick up the game for me, put it on a pallet and send it down south. luckily, toralf agreed to do so. thx a lot for your help in this one, toralf :-*

it took a while for everything to come together, but i was in no hurry at all. yesterday, when i entered The Storage™ for a different reason, something was waiting there for me. i didn't know it had already been delivered, i wasn't at home when it arrived. fortunately, patrik was and he opened the door for the shipping company.

here we go, the latest member of my (still) growing nintendo family

a few weeks ago i got a nice personal delivery from thomas who brought along an even nicer selection of games: joust, track & field, scramble and lost tomb. but there were also two other games in that bundle and i'd like to show you a few quick photos! first up, this sweet game

vector-goddess SOLAR QUEST - nothing beats vector games!!! PERIOD!!!

well, and then i bought something which i'd been looking for for quite a while and which was at the top spot of my wanted list after getting my moon patrol. and where there's one, sometimes there are even two! ;D

but who needs two tappers? therefore, the second one (the one on the right) went to my arcade buddy alex from austria

i kept the left one, because it is one of the rare cabinets with color sideart. apparently, only about 100 cabs with that sideart were produced before switching to the more common version you see on most of the cabs today!

condition of the sideart is pretty good, just a few nicks and dings here and there which i'll try to restore as nicely as possible. there are no reproductions available for the color sideart and i'm definitely keeping the original stuff!

tapper = arcade heaven, both when it comes to gameplay and to pure cab beauty :-*

this afternoon, i also cleaned up the storage, moved all the games i have sold (and which haven't been picked up yet) out of the main room to the adjacent unit and brought all my other games together. i put them in some kind of restoration order, at least the games i'd like to tackle next are easily accessible. the top spots are: reactor, discs of tron and tapper, i'm strongly leaning towards reactor at the monment!!!

here's an overview of what the storage unit looks like at the moment, i'll give you one free cabinet of your choice if you can name all the games present in the picture ;D

+1 @ finding a gameroom

+1000 :P

the thing is: i don't want to rent something which requires walking / driving to get to the games, i want my games either in a basement or in an adjacent building. and this is going to be difficult, but i haven't given up the dream yet. i've seen quite a few houses over the course of the last year, but none of them came even close to the place i need. a shame, but i'm still positive i'll get there eventually ...

now that i've FINALLY found myself a house, i need to reorganize my stuff! so far i've had games up in my apartment, a workspace with a small storage at my mum's place and the storage barn at patrik's place.

i've brought most of the games i'd like to have in my gameroom home already, just a few more to be brought in from the barn which will eventually be empty once the few games i still want to sell are gone / have been picked up. the workspace at my mum's place has been dissolved, i have a small but nice workspace here in the new house right next to my gameroom. all the parts will also be brought in apart from one thing: monitors! since i have so many spare screens, i simply can't find a good enough place here to store them, therefore the only thing staying at my mum's place are the monitors.

this will basically leave me with everything here - right where i want it and where i need it!!!

enough said, today i started to rearrange the stuff at my mum's place and took the opportunity to snap a few photos - here's what 9 NOS monitors look like ;D

i will hopefully find the time to rearrange the barn storage as well - and of course i'll be posting some pics once i'm done!
