Title: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?
Post by: Superully on August 25, 2010, 08:55:45 PM
ok guys, with "paul's container thread" taking up most of our attention this is probably not the best time to post this, but who knows? i went on a little roadtrip today where i visited two warehouses / storage units. some very important information first: i don't know ANYTHING about functionality of those cabs you're about to see NOR how much the owner wants for them. he told me to think about what i'm interested in first, send him a list with the names, then he's going to check the function of those games and give me some prices. he's a pretty old dude (around 75), so i'm not sure what to expect. anyway, here are some pictures i took

the first number of games where located in a gaming establishment in a storage room labelled "private". here's the building from the outside

inside, totally disappointing at first: just universal cabinets like hellomat

the only thing that looked promising was stuffed away in the corner: a pole position ii cabinet which seems to be in pretty good condition :)

without any high hopes, i went to the second location (the main building) which is about 30 kilometers away

the first thing i saw when i entered the main storage area were tons of old pinball machines, but since i'm not interested into "flipper", i only took one picture

then we turned to the arcade machine and here's my first glance at some of them

one (of two) pole positions

this one was labelled as "not working" (rom error), but i could have guessed that without the sticker. c'mon, it's a pole position :D

next to the pole position one (of two) gauntlets - this one has the full sideart

here's that gauntlet again! as you can see, two of the atari logo joysticks have been replaced, but all in all i'd describe the condition as GOOD!

in front of the gauntlet, a tehkan world cup. from what i know, this is a fun two-player game

the "stadium overlay" is in good condition as well (hard to tell from that picture, in know)

right behind the tehkan world cup, the second pole position

difficult to photograph, because it was blocked from the front, so i only managed to snap this picture of the control panel

back to back with "his brother", the second gauntlet - no sideart at all, at least on one side. next to it a converted missile command

the control panel of the missile command has been replaced, don't know what's inside now and what's left of the original stuff. the sides look much better than on michael's MC though ;)

the sign says that it has been converted

up next: asteroids

as far as i can tell, no sideart on the right side of the cabinet

control panel

cardboard monitor bezel still very colorful

marquee seems to be in great shape

then a game you don't see too often: super sprint

this would look pretty nice after some good cleaning

note that the entire text on the cardboard monitor bezel is in german - one reason why i should get it ;) (although i'm totally out of money atm)

and finally - you might have already spotted it - a paperboy

there are two sega hang ons in there as well (one of them can be seen on the warehouse overview picture), but i forgot to take detailed photos of them - but they are available!

as i've said before: i don't know if those games are working (except for the one pole position) and i don't know any prices yet, but simply shoot me a message or post here if you are interested, perhaps we could get another bulk deal going. note that i retain the right of first refusal if those games are really cheap, for 50 bucks a piece i'm going to take them all ;D 8). since the location is not too far away from me, i'd be willing to pick them up and i'd also be able to store them in The Storage™ for as long as you like.

although there were no real rarities in the warehouse, it was fun going there PLUS the excitement and uncertainty of what to see / discover was priceless! :spaceace:

If they really are 50 euro each then I will accept the Asteroids as a token of your appreciation instead of the "Neon licht" ;)

...and PM sent of course...

Man what a brilliant find !!!! I _exactly_ know how you felt when you opened that door and stepped inside.... :D

Some nice machines in there.

If I would have the space I would be all over the Super Sprint !!! Love it !

Some tiny little bug in my mind has always been saying that I should replace the Power Drift with a Pole Position. There is no doubt in my mind that any arcade collection needs a racing game, but PD is (compared to the rest of my small collection) the odd one. PP would fit much better with the other cabs because they are from the same ERA. Plus I LOVED PP back in the day. I remember that I first saw the game on a Dutch TV show and clearly remember that my jaw TOTALLY dropped when I saw the graphics, it was ground-breaking at the time.....
However, the electronics....the electronics....it's probably the game with the worst reputation in the field. A PPII recently sold for close to nothing on German e-bay. If you can get it cheap, reserve one for me. Do hope the PCB's are in there.

Does the place have electricity ?

By the way you should REALLY take pics of all the pinballs. There could be some treasures in there and hey, they are generally pretty valuable so good to do some trading...

And did you check the racks in the back ?? Seems to be a lot of spare parts there !

Some are also interested in "flipper"  ;)

Any chance of a list of these?

Also the paperboy could be interesting

i offer to help you recreate that neon sign with "el wire" though, although we should probably take some lessons with master phet first!

i've asked about spare monitors, but he said they still need them - although i had the feeling he didn't know what he was talking. i'll ask him again with my list of games - and also for prices of those hellomats ;)

i agree, those games really are in pretty good condition. that warehouse is totally dry and from what i could tell the cabinets looked solid. about the prices: let's hope we're not in for a shock :o :o :o

I'm not in the position to own that many games so my priorities lay elsewhere.

No I was talking about Ully, although your collection is also quite impressive and balanced. Would love the play star wars on a real vector monitor, but the chances to own a game like that are not very big. There are other games i would like to own more then the vector games. Maybe I have to experience them more to appreciate them.

Come on, it's my 7th post and I'm all shy and my eyes are wide and full of tears just like in mangas  :'(

plus SHE would be the very first dedicated cab of my collection.
plus I'm reading David Mitchell's "Black Swan Green" at the moment and they are playing asteroids in that book (the story takes place in 1982)
plus I just bought an asteroids cab so I will be able replace the missing side art with a true original one not a stinkin repro.

Ok, enough, I tried my best here  ;D ;D ;D

Nice find.

That Asteroids seems to have had its 1 and 2 player start buttons replaced with standard ones, normally they're cone switches unless there are versions I don't know about. Which probably means the control panel has been drilled for the larger diameters and will need to be fixed.

not that SHE thing again. why do cabinets have to be female? is it because only guys are playing those old stupid games? i never understood the desire to talk about a cabinet as if it were female. i might understand it (after some glasses of wine) for ms pac-man, but asteroids - c'mon. would you call "terminator 2" SHE as well? :P

there are so many pins left, you wouldn't be able to buy them all - unless you're a millionaire. as i've said, the seller is pretty old and has no idea which games / pins he has, they are just standing around. so if you're looking for anything in particular, let me know. if not, i'll try to make some kind of list in case the arcade cabinet deal works!

i'll send him the list with the games people showed interest in tomorrow!

+1

I'm defintely interested in Xenon, Twilight Zone, Creatures from the Black Lagoon and quite some others from this top 100's list: http://pinside.com/pinball/top-100 Not that I will buy all of them  :), but besides arcade games my future gameroom needs a footy game (check) and a nice pinball. And a bar of course!  :D

And as you said, there are lots of pinballs, so everyone who is interested could possibly get a nice one, if the price is right.

Please make a list Ully, you still have holiday don't you? What better thing to do then to make a list of the availble pinballs for fellow collectors.  :D

ok, i've forwarded the wish list with the arcade machines to the seller and also inquired about the pinballs - i've asked for average prices first, because he definitely has NO IDEA what he has. best thing would probably be to do the arcade deal first and while picking up the cabs (which is hopefully going to work out) i can make a list of the pinballs. however, i've asked him for such a thing just in case he has one (which i don't think he does).

let's see where this leads ... i'll keep you posted! thx for the tons of inquiries, i wish he had 10 paperboys, gauntlets and asteroids to offer ;)

back from holiday. but i have a bad feeling.
for about 2 years i had an answer on my newspaper notice.
this was an old guy who had 100 machines (he said).
he was although operator in the "bundeswehr kasernen" near the country you found the warehouse.
i know his sentence till today in my ear.....
"nen fernseh apparat kannste so für 1000 haben und nen flipper für 2000. ich test die auch vorher nochmal"
in english: one arcade 1k - one pin 2k - but hey it´s tested  :D

but i cross the fingers that this is not the same guy....

So what happened to this then ? ;)

Gotta ring him at least once a year..or put a written note in his mailbox.....you never know, things may change.....ask Alpha1 how he got his good-as-new SW cockpit....one of the best stories in the hobby so far IMHO :)
Title: Re: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?
Post by: Superully on May 30, 2011, 05:23:56 PM
don't know the story of alpha's sw cockpit!

as for the old guy: i've sent him letters, emails and called him: he told me that our expectations (price-wise) differ way too much to EVER expect to come to an agreement. ask toralf aka time pilot how difficult it is negotiating with that guy. i might call him again at some point in the future, the problem is that his son is running the business now and he's even worse than his father :-\
Title: Re: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?
Post by: TimePilot on May 31, 2011, 03:53:58 AM
yes, ully has right. this old dude is very very hard to handle. if have buy the paperboy from him, but it was a badly action with him and the price is insane. i think the other cabs you were find in 2030 at his warehouse, they don´t want sell them really...
Title: Re: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?
Post by: level42 on May 31, 2011, 09:55:21 AM
Insane........I mean if he at least would be wanting to sell them for those prices you'd expect him to advertise them somewhere instead of keeping them....

On the other hand....this may be a nice raid in 2021  ;D ;D ;D

Insane........I mean if he at least would be wanting to sell them for those prices you'd expect him to advertise them somewhere instead of keeping them....

i think an offer of 250 - 300 euros for an untested gauntlet is not too bad or insulting, but he wants to have at least triple that amount. as for the super sprint: he thinks that one is worth no less than 1000 euros (or even more). he kept telling me that he paid 4000 marks back in the days for it.
i also offered him 250 for the untested asteroids (and 50 bucks for the completely hacked missile command which is merely a shell) - but of course he declined.

what is your take on those prices?
Title: Re: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?
Post by: level42 on May 31, 2011, 10:37:58 AM
I say you are right and he is nuts.

He probably DID pay 4000 DM for that Sprint back in the day, not an unusual price for an imported game to my ears.
But if you think that it's still worth half the value (4000dm is about 2000 Euro right ?) after about 30 years....he's nuts.

He'll probably never sell them during his lifetime....can't be long, keep an eye on the local paper for the ad of "gone" people ;) ;) ;)

Totally decent offers for untested games imho.
We should take turns and call him at least twice a year with the same offers until he "open the gates" (or completely loose it ;)).

don't know, but i've been talking with toralf recently about contacting him again. there's been interested in two of his cabs ... but the way he talked the last time he still thinks he's sitting on a goldmine. might be true for the pinballs, but we know that most videogames are NOT!

Title: Re: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?
Post by: Superully on March 03, 2012, 06:32:23 PM

1 1/2 years after my first visit, i returned to "the warehouse with the gold nuggets inside" (at least that's what the owner thinks)! however, in the meantime his son has taken over the business (with the father still crawling around in the background ;)) and he's much easier to talk to. while he still thinks he has tons of gold stored away in the warehouse, he is open for offers and seems to be at least willing to sell some of his stuff! this time around, i was not alone though, i met up with toralf "time pilot" who was there on a mission of his own - but more on that later!

my first order of business was to check out the tehkan world cup for an arcade friend of mine. the game is still there (who would have thought otherwise?), although much dustier than the last time i was there!

dust is not a problem, age is, so the big question is: is the game working? let's plug it in

sideart is still present, but the rest of the art is missing. i'm afraid getting replacements / NOS artwork will be impossible here. it's a shame, because the game is fun indeed (but the trackball's bearings definitely need to be replaced)!

i love the "stadium bezel" around the monitor!

here's what the game is supposed to look like with artwork attached

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7065/6803183258_4e9feb0b8b_d.jpg) (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7046/6803183184_a378939924_d.jpg)

the owner also showed us a room i hadn't seen the last time i was there. it was their repair room and in it there were also a couple of cocktail tables, the nicest of which are those dedicated asteroids machines!

the main purpose of my visit though was the super sprint! i wanted to find out more about the condition of the game (didn't have that much time on my first visit), whether it is working or not and if we might be able to come together on a price which would make both of us happy!

so we plugged the game in, coin door lights came on (at least two out of three), we could hear the fan, but we waited and waited for a picture to appear on the screen - nothing! we added credits to find out if it played blind, but nothing happened. he told me that the game had been in operation until ten years ago when they pulled it from location and it was working back then. the operator was 99% sure it was still working, well, he had to realize that 99% is not 100%!

we started talking business and i told him his father had told me two years that he wanted 200 for a non-working game and 500 for a working one. his reply was something like "this is not A game, this is THE game", because this is the one in which he sunk tons of money, so basically a lot of childhood memories involved here. i made him an offer for the game as-is, but he refused and said he wanted to have his technician have a look at it first! whatever ...

everything else was still there as well, for example the two gauntlet machines (one with tall sideart)!

this time around i also decided to do the pinball guys a favor and take more pictures of the machines, so here you go

because most of the pinballs are cramped together in the middle of the warehouse without an aisle to walk in between, i asked the owner if i could set up one of the ladders leaning on the walls to get some nice shots "from above". even i have to admit, that sight was absolutely impressive! :o :o :o

in the background, you can see toralf on the ladder i had set up and the warehouse operator on the right

Get me a pinball list  ;D

if anyone isinterested in a list of available pinballs, send me a pm with your email address (or an email directly) and i'll forward to a pdf document i received from the seller. please do not try to contact the operator without going through me, ok?

but the operator not only has pinballs and video games stored away in his warehouse, but also some really nice jukeboxes!

check out the amazing light effects of this seeburg mardi gras (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2xAarn0v00&feature=related)!

while i think that most jukeboxes are pretty ugly, i have been chasing one particular model over the course of the last few months - a seeburg smc1 disco. i love everything about that machine: the design, the colors, the light effects, the controls, just everything! it's a machine from 1978, so it would fit perfectly in my (arcade) collecting period. i almost bought one a couple of weeks ago on ebay germany, it was listed pretty cheap, but it was not working and i'm still somewhat afraid of the electronic and mechanical stuff inside a jukebox. this is something completely different from a videogame!

why am i telling you all this, you might be wondering. well, while the operator showed us around the warehouse we entered a long hallway and guess what was standing there, as if it had been waiting for me: a seeburg smc1 disco! i had never seen one in person before (just videos of it), so i asked the seller if he could plug it in for me - which he did! are you ready for some amazing photos of that beauty? :-*

unfortunately, we couldn't try out this fully-loaded jukebox (because there was something wrong with one of the locks and we didn't have german marks to add credits). later, we found two more machines in another room in the cellar, but the one we opened up didn't have any records inside. nevertheless, i know now what i really really want! 8) ;D

here's a picture of the one we opened up. right now, for me this is like watching someone do sudoku: i just can't comprehend what's going on there! :D

let's turn our attention to toralf's mission, because he didn't travel all the way down here from northern germany just for the fun of it. his eyes were on the missile command! he had been in contact with the seller before asking about that particular machine. the last time i was there a hand-written note on the glass bezel said it had been converted to something else!

as it turned out, the operator's brother is a software developer and he had put a computer and a tft monitor inside to test one of his games ! most of the original parts are gone, the control panel has been hacked, but this is one of toralf's arcade grails, he got it for cheap and he has almost all the parts to convert it back, so he went for it. this is going to be a lot of work, but well worth it. one more classic saved!!!

time to haul the machine out

a proud toralf next to his grail!

as always (or least: often), toralf was accompanied by his 71-year old dad and for the first time in his life, he operated a digital camera to take this final photo of some crazy arcade guys who - once again - travelled hundreds of kilometers for some 30+ year old video games to relive nostalgic childhood memories :P. i think he did a great job with the photo!

and then we rode off into the sunset ... :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Excellent! thanks for this detailed report Ully... please stop showing pics of cool jukeboxes, I don't want to get hooked on these machines, arcades are space consuming enough!  ;D

my first order of business was to check out the tehkan world cup for an arcade friend of mine. the game is still there (who would have thought otherwise?), although much dustier than the last time i was there!

...

sideart is still present, but the rest of the art is missing. i'm afraid getting replacements / NOS artwork will be impossible here. it's a shame, because the game is fun indeed (but the trackball's bearings definitely need to be replaced)!

I think there's a NOS CP overlay on Yahoo! Japan Auctions...let me see if I can find the link.

EDIT: Here it is: http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/149529988 Only the 2P side

If you're interested I can put a bid in through a proxy service but there will be added fees + shipping.  Maybe one of our members in Japan would be able to bid for you?

Hey Ully, very nice story and pics!!! now i have a new personally avatar, thanks dude...   ;)

First, I'm good back home, and my dad + grail too. ;D

Many thanks for the (short) fun time. man, that's such a shame that we meet not so often, this must be change... :-\

Hope anybody here can take any of the other cabs, this must be safe!!!

;D the good thing about jukeboxes (at least for me) is that you don't need more than one. once you've found your favorite model (which i think i have), you're fine and can return to buying video games again! :D

so cool, thx man, unfortunately only the 2P side, but this shows that that stuff still is out there. if this was a complete set, i might even go for it, just to have it over here and pass it on to the guy who takes the cocktail table! do we have any japanese speaking guys here who cold ask the seller if more art is available?

Yes sir, Dr. Blair (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?action=profile;u=3617):

If there's something that you need of of Yahoo auctions, I'd be happy to help you out. Please let me know.

Also, I'm a long way from printing up CPOs, but if there's any Japanese-English translation that you need, I'd be happy to help out! ;)

Give him a shout, maybe he can help you out

I would be also interested in an Indy pin, but in this case the price is higly depends on condition, some detailed pics would be great.
To restore the playfield and the sidearts completely on a pinball could cost 500 to 1000 eur, that is why I'm asking. ;)

Well, I might like to have the Addams Family or Indiana Jones pin or Funhouse.
Depending on price and condition ofcourse.
Like Belike says, restoring playfields and parts can cost a lot of money.

Great to see you went back and Toralf congrats on the MC !!!

You can put me on the list for an Asteroids cocktail table. Has to be complete though...and of course the price must be right !

No I cannot fit it anywhere anymore, no I don't really like cocktails in general but ever since I played Andreas' Asteroids cocktail I fell in love.....
Maybe I can convince my wife to replace the "coffee table" with this ? ;)

Anyway, put me on the list please :)

What else is there video games wise, do you have a list you can e-mail of those too ?

I guess if you showed the pics with pinballs on pinball forums some people would get pretty excited :)

everything's still there from our last visit (except for the paperboy), so just check out the pics, unfortunately i don't have a list!

I guess if you showed the pics with pinballs on pinball forums some people would get pretty excited :)

i know - and i've been thinking about that, but (a) you guys are basically family :D, so you should be able to pick first and (b) if i put that on a pinball forum it might blow out of proportion and someone from over there might pull off a john rambo. of course this forum and this posting is open to the public as well and word might spread, but before something serious happens the deal will either be struck or it will be off the table!

i've updated the list. note that i've simply put in your wishes for now. if the prices are out, we will go through the list from top to bottom and you can decide whether you are still interested in buying or not. this order is also good when it comes to picking amongst multiple machines. if this deal really happens, i'll drive over again and get more pictures of the individual machines. i hope that's fair ...

ok guys, just got off the phone with the operator (finally)! let me start with a short recap: when i was over last saturday with toralf he clearly stated that he is not interested in selling just one or two of the games he has because it's way too much hassle for him. i'm sure toralf can confirm that. that's why i started organizing the bulk buy here!

on the phone he basically told me the complete opposite! he has taken over the business from his father half a year ago with his dad still running around in the background. he told me he had done some searching on the internet and was surprised about the money people still pay for games (and he especially mentioned arcade games, although i have no idea where he even found a price for super sprint or tehkan world cup). he also told me that he doesn't know in which direction the gambling business will be heading, if he is still around in 5 years time with his business and therefore wants to keep a large part of his machines as a money investment for the future. he said he doesn't need the money right now because he's doing fine financially. he is 100% positive that everything he has will increase in value drastically! furthermore, his father has established the business over a period of i don't know how many years and if he decided to sell off a large part of the collection, he would feel like betraying his father (in a way, i somehow can understand that). he has the space to keep the stuff stored, so there's no necessity for getting rid off everything. additionally, he just doesn't have the time (and probably the motivation) to come up with prices for each game we were interested in!

with that being said, he also told me that he would consider selling individual games if the price is right, but those prices need to be determined by you first! if we come to an agreement, we would have to get the games out in a cloak-and-dagger operation without his father getting wind of it!

of course, we all would have to wear this then 8)

to cut a long story short: if you are really interested in stuff from his place, send me a good offer (which doesn't offend him) for it and i'll forward it to him. i MIGHT make him an offer on the jukebox and perhaps even on the super sprint, don't know yet!

i'm really sorry that those aren't good news, but i was afraid that something like that would happen. he inherited certain traits from his father and we probably just have to accept the fact that this is not going to be the deal of the century - unfortunately!

Very hard to make an offer when it's unknown wether the machines (pinballs) run or not.
Not knowing the cosmetical condition (playfield f.i.) adds to this.

Unwritten rule in such cases is to presume it's not working. And that presumption would lead to an offer that wìll offend him.

This and the distance involved for the pick-up .... well I guess I just won't offer him a price and search elswhere.

That guy is a loser.

So, if he thinks, like his dad, that he is sitting on a goldmine which is getting bigger and bigger, then he probably is also thinking in gold bars.

I don't hope that this has been a waste of time for us, but especially for you Ully, because you invested already some time in it, which is appreciated very much.  :)

Anyway, I don't have a clue how much certain pinballs should cost, also because there is no information available about the technical and cosmetical condition of the pinballs. And the jukebox world is even more mysterious for me. But others on the forum are pretty familiar with this stuff, perhaps we should discuss prices here amongst each others, to establish our offers to the owner. Is that an idea?

So, what is a reasonable price for the pinballs I'm interested in (and in technical and cosmetical good condition):

High Speed: ?
Fun House: ?

Jukebox: seeburg STD 160 jukebox ?

Edit: just read Onno's reply, he is probably right, it might be better to forget about this and move on to the next opportunity. Fortunately pinballs are pretty easy to find.

Funhouse got quite expensive in the last 2 years. Nice ones start at 750,-- (best case)

Oh, no doubt his pins have _some_  value. He just needs to put in more effort. Hook them up, take photo's and make a full desciption and set a price.

that's exactly what he does NOT want to do because he thinks like this: "either someone is making me a good offer now without me having to go through a lot of trouble OR i will sell those machines in 10 - 20 years for double / triple the price!".

anyway, if anyone is still interested, send me an offer as-is (unseen, untested) and i will tell him exactly that: those machines are unseen & untested, so that's our offer. i have a bad feeling though what the answer is going to be ...

This never works with operators, they don't have a clue about prices (and if you don't know what something is worth, you don't sell it if someone asks you to sell it), they don't have time, and they just can't be arsed. Operators also rarely sell stuff for a steal, it's possible to get nice prices but just up to a certain extent. Condition of operator machines in general is average at best, so that's what prices should be based on, assuming everything is OK technically.

I mailed you a suggestion Ullrich.

I mailed you a suggestion Ullrich.

thx, just read it, why not post it openly here and we'll discuss it?

the thing with prices for pinballs / videogames is this: most deals are done privately between collectors and those prices are mostly ok, i'd say only a few buy stuff openly from businessman. however, what that guy does when looking for prices is enter the name of a game, companies like paul50s show up and they think: wow, those games are worth that much? in fact, they have no real idea about the value of these machines nowadays!

Yeah they do that ^^ it's just showing some muscles usually to get a better offer and see how much you really want their stuff.
It's quite simply, everyone should decide what he is comfortable with paying for an unseen machine and then we make an offer with all those people for the seperate machines (but in 1 big offer). If the offer you have in mind is not accepted, then it's not interesting for you anyway.

Here is what i mailed to Ullrich:

-----
Heya Ulrich,

Just saw your post on the forums. I have done Groupbuys from operators like this before (similar situations).
There is 1 rule you should always keep in mind, operators don't want to spend time on pricing. You have to do everything for him.
I usually make a list with prices for individual machines, don't buy to many at once seeing the situation, but make it worth it for him. Offer him prices, don't ask for prices, he probably has no clue about value except some googling and looking on ebay, and if someone doesn't know values and is asked what he wants for something, he simply won't sell it.
This also means that people who were in it to get stuff just for a few bucks are likely out of luck though, it's very possible to get decent prices but it usually never is a steal with operators.

I can help you with making a pricelist if you want, no problem (based on 'average' cosmetic condition of everything, but working technically), but then you need a list of machines for people who are serious, and agree with the proposal prices, so you can immediately seriously negotiate and close a deal (and not let him have to much time to think).

Regards,

Arno
-----

So if we have a complete list of people who want to make an offer (maybe some want out, and some want in) we can go from there.

Theres all ready a list on page 9, i think it was...

I saw a list on page 11 (squeezed myself in, if we're making a new offer list anyway):

- superully: jukebox seeburg smc1 disco, super sprint videogame
- darth nuno: jukebox seeburg smc1 disco
- muerto: 2 x gauntlet videogame
- time pilot: adams family or indiana jones pinball
- alpha1: funhouse, pinbot, indiana jones pinballs
- bloodflowers: stargate pinball
- belike: indiana jones pinball
- ravage: indiana jones, corvette, whirlwind, funhouse (maybe x 2), white water pinballs
- ckong: high speed & funhouse, seeburg STD 160 jukebox
- level42: asteroids cocktail
- joeks: funhouse pinball
- jiggymf: batman pinball
- punkrockcaveman: cyclone, funhouse, whirlwind, star Wars, the getaway pinballs
- laschek: cyclone pinball
- purity: indiana jones pinball, tehkan world cup videogame
- chrischris: asteroids cocktail
- jpc: buck rogers, pinbot pinball
- skov: indiana jones, white water, taxi, getaway, funhouse pinballs
- elpancho: funhouse, taxi pinballs
- stefano (pinballs): taxi x 2, pinbot x 2, the machine (if diamond plate), funhouse (if diamond plate), addams family, indiana jones, white water pinballs
- stefano (videogames): tehkan world cup, super sprint, asteroids cocktail x 2, asteroids upright

Question is if everyone in that list is willing to make an offer for an unseen machine and stick with it (i can't judge)

I have had excellent deals with an op....I think it has to do with:
a) stick to your promises. Ifyou agree to visit at a certain date and time, be there. ops often have to deal with people who dont stick to their promises
b) be realistic about prices, dont go into doing insanely low offers
c) stay nice even when you disagree about prices etc.

I think your idea of making one offer for the lot is A good idea and may lower the price for the individual cabs but the problem is there is no control if I want it or not. If the op wants 700 for the Asteroids cocktail, I"m out.
With all due respect but you may make a list of prices but who says I agree what you think (f.i.) an Asteroids Cocktail is worth ? And that of course goes for all the others as well.Maybe we should say what our max is...

It depends on condition and completeness of course.

Maybe i put it wrong, or you misunderstood, I don't make any price (i'm just a participant if possible in the groupbuy for a machine), everyone makes the price/offer for the thing(s) he wants (in case people want the same object, and there is more then one available, then those offers should be the same. In case more people want an object of which just 1 is available, then i guess the highest offer is the offer that will be used). It's just that if people have no clue that we can help eachother to see what an offer could be. Might also save Ullrich alot of hastle if we do some work on the prices ourselves. Also offers should be made for an unseen object, which can be in any state (great state if you're lucky, or very bad shape if you're unlucky), that's likely just a risk people have to take.

The thing with a bulk offer also is that it just takes 2 people to make an insane offending offer and then the whole deal is off, so we all have to agree that prices are realistic seeing the situation. It's also very important that people stick with their offer and don't back out once it's made, that also can lead to the deal being cancelled.

I absolutely disagree with this, a deal is not about luck if the seller have the chance to make at least more photos about the actual item.
I'm not fancy for buying an empty pinball shell if I'm unlucky.

I don't think anyone wants an empty cab or pinball :P
We can communicate we expect machines to be in fully working order and at least reasonable cosmetic condition.
It's just the exact state of the machines that will remain a question, operators simply don't look at those machines like we do. If it works it works and brings in cash, the rest they don't really care about alot. If we demand pictures of individual machines we're pretty sure the deal will not continue, people like that don't want to put in time and effort (it also works the other way around, if a machine is in top shape and proven by pictures, you will have to put a top offer).

This isn't my groupbuy by the way, i'm just making some suggestions. Heck i'm even new here as a poster, i don't have alot to say anyway ^^

About old pinballs, the condition of the backglass / playfield is very important in order to put a price on these machines.

Just seen this. It's a shame he thinks everything will go up in price. The truth is that everything WILL indeed go up in price, but so will everything else too like houses, cars, groceries, gas - it's called inflation.

An Indiana Jones pinball might be worth 10,000E in 20 years time but then the relative cost to the cost now after inflation may make it the same amount.

Anyhow I will most likely have to be out of this bulk buy guys as I can't afford to pay normal prices at this time. I always like a bargain of course but I will pass on the games to let other people have them. I already see there is more people for Funhouse and Indiana Jones than there is machines.

Good luck to all!!  :spaceace:

Well, I don't know if if I want to make an offer for a Funhouse pinball machine of which I have only seen the dusty front of.
I really want a Funhouse pinball, but this situation isn't optimal. Maybe visit the place with cash and decide then after we could have had a look?

But Ully, you can ask the guy if he want to sell one for 750 euro. If the machine is in good and working condition, that would be a nice deal.

Title: Re: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?
Post by: ElPancho on March 11, 2012, 08:54:48 AM
Forgot to mention earlier ..... *feels ashamed* ....... Thank you Ully for all the effort you've put into this ! You rock.

I sympathise with you not being able to communicate with this seller. Sure there is talk but it seems he's from another planet.

I think the part where he mentions that a bulk-sell would somehow betray the legacy of his father may sound plausible but ... on the other hand I've yet to meet a business-man that runs his business on emotion, it's just cash to them.

Not selling them now but in 10/15 years from now would certainly up the price, but as Alpha1 said, inflation will bite a fair chunck off the profit by then.

Also there might be the factor that some of us collectors will have abandoned this hobby in 10/15 years (too old to care) so Im expecting to see a fair few collections coming up for sale in the years to come (also with the crisis an whatnot). The newer generations won't be buying from him in 10/15 years as they just don't care about these machines.

And even if the collectors line up in 2025 to buy these machines he'd still have to hook them up at some point and I'll guarantee him a lot of machines won't work after such a long time, decresing the price. Will be "fun" looking for a pin-pcb in 2025 .....

Even if he has "free" strorage that place needs heating in winter and an empty warehouse could be rented out to other people for storing things. I'm guessing property-taxes also apply in Germany. Seems to me his "free" storage is costing him money after all. He, as a business-man, knows this. (cost of ownership)

I still think he wants these machines gone more that he lets us believe.

He's playing it though. Last thing imvho to do is doing it his way, you know beforehand the deal will be "not so good". If bringing up "reality" offends him I would think to myself "though luck, cowboy the f*** up." It's not that he made these machines himself. In that case offending would be a nono.

Shame only a few people on the list take part in this discussion. By doing so (besides that it is fun) it could perhaps supply Ully with more "ammo" in the negotiations.
Which leads me to ask, getting any offers yet Ully? Not that I have a right to know since I'm out of this buy, just curious.
Title: Re: Warehouse Visit(s) - anyone up for some dedicated games?

I have to agree with most other posters. Buying a pinball unseen and untested is like testing a 9v battery with your tongue, might be good or it might be a big burn. And the prices would have to reflect that.

If the machines still have the batteries installed on the MPU (which is most likely) and they have been sitting there for quite some time now, there's a growing chance of acid damage to the boards (can't think of what they'll look like if he keeps them there for 10+ more years).

The playfield might have wear and missing unique parts that might make it impossible to restore it to a state where one would be happy about it.

And on top of that there's the cloak and dagger stuff with the father, I can just  imagine driving down there just to have it all fall apart because of family issues.

Still there's some interesting machines there, so I find myself torn. Ully what's your take on the family issue, if we ended up making a deal would it come through alright?

+3 ;)

I'm out of this deal anyway. There are to many random factors. Pinball machines are much more difficult to buy without seing them. Too many custom parts in there that could be damaged beyond repair. So good luck to the people that buy one or the seller who thinks they are worth a million ;D

alright guys, back to this one, don't want to go into a lengthy discussion here, nothing will come out of it in the end because the operator is not reading this and might be immune to what we are trying to tell him 8). With that being said, I have received a couple of ok offers for some pinball machines and videogames which I will forward to the operator on Wednesday (again), so if you still want to make an offer, post it here or send me a message.

Another thing I forgot to mention: he told me that the batteries have all been removed from the pinballs, so no danger of acid damage and - once again - the machines will be complete if you buy them! His staff will go over the games before they leave the warehouse just to make sure everything is there.

So who is still in this groupbuy?
I made an offer but I might cancel it before wednesday.
Not your fault ofcourse Ully, but dealing with this operator and all those family stories, I don't know.

Where about is the warehouse located btw Ully? East- or West Germany?
Just so I can take roadtrip cost and effort in consideration regarding my offer.

I made a serious offer (IMHO) for a non-working machine. I don't actually expect the seller to accept it.... ;D ;D

5000 euros - are you sure? :P

honestly, paul sell's dirty untested one for around 1300 euros, let's deduct the typical bonus and say an untested dirty one is worth how much? 400 euros? the ones from the operator are in really good shape, the one we looked inside was complete (as far as i could see - there are some typical parts which are often missing, but they were present here). how much should we offer him?

Hmmm, I still couldn't decide what to do with the Indy pin, do we have any public offers for it?

nope, we don't, but perhaps the persons who have made an offer wouldn't mind sharing their offer ...?

I am for public offers too.
I opted 750 euro for a nice Funhouse and would feel cheated if he accepts 500 euro from someone else too (which I can't imagine though).

Ok, my offer is 600 eur for an untested Indy pin in unknown condition, but I'm not sure if it fits to my car, so maybe I will need some help in picking up and storing it for a few weeks.(I guess he won't accept this offer, so there will be no hassle with the transport. :D)

ok guys, i have forwarded out offers to the operator, let's see how he reacts ;)

just to let you know: i have received different offers on the same pinball type (e.g. indiana jones), in that case i wrote "€XXX - €XXXX - depending on condition".

fingers crossed that at least something comes out of this and that our bulk buy effort wasn't for nothing! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

I think it would be wise to give the operator a couple of weeks after giving the list of offers.  Then start to chase him

Did you mail our offers to his regular e-mailaddress Ully? Not to his spam e-mailaddress idontreadthis@operator.de? :)
