Title: :: GYRUSS :: Destination Earth ( * workshop * )
Post by: DarthNuno on December 19, 2008, 07:36:44 PM
First, the road trip

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/gyruss-jr.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=483.0)

The game was still in the Sam's garage ... until now  ;D Yes, It's time to bring it 'at home'  8)

For the first time, the workshop starts inside the my car  :D I've to clean 'under' the cabinet, or then I'll make dirty the new carpet

Ok, it's clean... let's unload it... Some ducks are watching me  ;D No ... this is no food  :D

And.... finally inside the 'messy' v2   8)

The serial number : 012861

Ok, under the plexi/bezel, there is an other cardboard bezel, but it is very damaged (It is torn and bent)  :ghost:. I'll check it later.
Now have a look at the monitor and its frame

It's just dropped on the cab, there is no screws fixed between the metal monitor frame and the brackets in the cabinet  :o ???
That is the reason why I heard noises during the road trip : the monitor was moving inside the cab  :o :ghost:
In addition, that monitor frame doesn't match the bracket of the cabinet ! The holes in the metal frame don't match any hole from the bracket.
So why the hell that monitor has been dropped inside that cab ?
Nothing else inside the cab, except the a power supply.

Ok let's start to work. First I've to restore the marquee retainer and the bezel retainer, full of rust :

After a first 'sanding' session

Let's use my usual Rust remover

And finish the work manually...

One layer of primer :

Than two layers of black :

Ok, even if it's not the original monitor frame, I'll try to use it.

As I said previously, these holes don't match the metal brackets inside the cabinet  :?

Let's fix that  ;)

Done :

The monitor that was 'dropped' inside that cab' is not working.
OK let's give to that Gyruss a brand new TV/Monitor

Usual stuff  ;D

The transplantation is finished  :-*

On location

Great, I can access the hidden service menu ... ::) :P :

... and the usual Geometry settings  8)

I do like Gyruss, great music!

The game's background music is an electronic, fast-paced arrangement of J. S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565; this particular arrangement is superficially similar in sound to "Toccata", a rock arrangement by the UK-based instrumentalist group Sky. Gyruss is notable for using "stereo" sound, which according to the bonus material for Konami Arcade Classics, was achieved by utilizing discrete audio circuits. (Gyruss on Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyruss))  ::) ;)

Ok, let's have a look at the control panel...

... very used ...

...impossible to move the joystick?!  :ghost:

Let's remove everything.

Rust... of course  :-X

Did 'ya say dirty ?

As usual, two baths... the left one is water + strong soap, the right one is rust-remover :

24 hours... it looks better, but of course... it's still 'used' ... no miracle with that  :-\

The control panel overlay is very 'used'  :-\

Usually, this *magic* sponge does miracle

Let's go...

Well, it's better...

...but some area are too used. It's not dirt, it's used or damaged  Impossible to do better than this

I think I'll live with that  :) The worst area is the upper part, in the curve, but I'm sure It won't be too visible when I'll put back the panel on the cabinet. It's a kind of 'hidden area' for the player after all  ;)
Used means also 'vintage'   :-*

The original joystick is damaged, and some parts of it are missing, but I've just got a NOS  :-*

Same manufacturer : MONROE ELECTONICS.

I love NOS  :-*

Let's put back the buttons and that new joystick onto the panel, and start *at least* a first game on Gyruss  :P  ;D

It plays great ! I love Gyruss  :)

OK, let's refresh the screws. After the 'Rust remover' bath, I sand them with a Dremel...

...and I paint them (primer + 2 layers of mate black) ... usual mushrooms picture  ::) ;D

Yeps Screen, I'm sure I'll look better with a new CPO repro, but I'm fine with this one, even with the scratches on it, because it's the original one.
I love to think about the thousands of hands who played that game on that panel in the past  ;D ...and now... many years later ... in an other country ... far far away (this is an US import cab') ... that same panel is ready for a new generation of players  :P

OK, here's the primary bezel...it was like a bubble of chewing gum... totally bended, rolled on itself
So I putted few heavy books on it, in order to give it its original shape. Here's the result after few weeks

Because I didn't use the original monitor frame, the position of the frame I've used is not exactly the same than the one 'expected' by the bezel  See by ourself ... the bezel is supposed to hide the speakers, but it doesn't  :-\

Two solutions : create a new bezel from scratch...or adapt this one. Let's try the second solution first.
Let's cut two pieces of cardboard :

...and paint them

Perfect  :-*

Cool... the end is very near ... but for now, let's take some time to play on the game  ;) :-* :-* :-*

Back on this  8)

I've used the great scan available on this Klov post (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=68615&).

Here's the file : Gyruss bezel (http://www.arcadelifestyle.net/gyruss/gyruss_bezel.png).

Now printed  ;)

Let's check the size with the Plexiglas bezel on it

The scan/print is a little bit 'oversize' as you can see, but I'm fine with that  :)

Check out the great quality of the scan and print! No pixel effect at all  :-*

Ok, now I need solid support for that new repro 'bezel artwork', printed on an usual vinyl roll. What about this cardboard box  ::) :P

Let cut a piece of the same size than the Plexiglas bezel...

Now, let's try to beat the Gyruss world record  ;D  ;D ;D :spaceace:

OK, let's cut the artwork ...

Done

Of course, let's cut the same shape in my piece of cardboard  ;)

Yes  ;) Great job on this  :-*

Before finishing the work on that bezel, I still have an old problem to fix. The new Monitor I'm using, once in the cabinet, has a part of the board 'too long', and ... I'm not able to put the back door anymore  :o

The solution is : a router  ;)  Here's what I've done inside the back door

Now, I can finally put back the original coin door  :P

Let's check if the cardboard  fits...

Yes, but ... the groove is not large enough for the plastic bezel AND my custom bezel in cardboard, so let's reduce the size of the cardboard, like this

Now, let's paint the edge in black, so no one will be able to see any difference with the original cardboard bezel  :P

Now, I presume you understand what will happen  ;D

Let's do it slowly

This it it! Great  :-*

Let's put it on the game and...

...

...

...

I don't like to use a flash for taking cabs' pictures, but you have to see the new bezel! Wonderful  :-*

Well, I used to be very good at this game, back in the 80's  ::) But for now... let's start practicing again  :P

Not anymore since three months  :'(

I use to got them at Carrefour, and I even ask them to order TEN more for me  8) These TEN are still in back order, but the seller said to me than there almost no chance to get them one day  :(

People are throwing away CRT TVs as if they were rubbish nowadays, so I have also picked up a couple.
But still, I would rather want to be able to buy one type, and pay for it. Why? First of all, you never know how many boards the TV contains, and second, you don't know how it functions. Geometry menus, does it turn itself on directly without standby etc..

@bruno: what kind of tv is that exactly that you're using? i might have a look around over here in germany ...

I still see 51 cm TV's for sale at mail-order shops like www.Wehkamp.nl and www.Otto.nl but I don't like the price.
For that price, I would only buy new open frame monitors.

I've done the TV solution twice now and I'm not 100% satisfied with it. On my Galaxian, I've got some sync problem. It's "jittery" at the righ (=top) side of the screen. Strange, as this one worked fine on the Centipede before. The Centi now has it's original CRT back in place with a "new" working G07 chassis that I picked up for free in Germany ! :)

What I really would want is to order a freaking pallet of 19" monitors. Nothing to beat a brand new CRT. However, even HAPP in the US doesn't carry them anymore (only 13"). I think the days are counting out for the CRT....

I think the TV solution is a great option, but I'd go only for more modern TV's now that have an electronic set-up menu so you can adjust everything (like the TV's Bruno used). Some older TV's simply don't have the controls to adjust everything needed.

There is also another way: You can get replacement chassis for a good working CRT for little money these days. Check out http://www.grebo.eu/arcadegames/shop/index_eur.htm

They start at only 34 euro. Seller told me he said some people see geometry problems with that one. If you're anal, you should get the bit more expensive one of 55 euro (HQ).

So, if we could order a bulk order of real CRT monitors, would anyone be interested in a couple ?

What a stupidly big bezel ::), if the company that made the cab had sense they would have put in a bigger telly or made the cab smaller, but still....amazing work as always bruno!!!  ;D

@bruno: what kind of tv is that exactly that you're using? i might have a look around over here in germany ...

Well, the 'best buy' new TV for me are :

- BlueSky BL5126TX :

(see for example the Space Ace resto (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=106))

- Manhattan T5106 MAV :

(see for example the Rolling Thunder resto (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=197))

- ALTUS 20 BMT :

(see for example the Red Nintendo/DK resto (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=339))

Good picture quality, geometry setting via technician code, 60hz NTSC via scart for a perfect 'ARCADE' RGB picture  :-*

Price paid : between 109€ ~ 140€ per TV.

Excellent work on the bezel!  (http://www.pachitalk.com/forums/images/smilies/fing02.gif)

I will be restoring a Gyruss later this Summer.  This has been good inspiration.  I just need to find somewhere to print out the bezel like you did.  Also, mine needs a reapaint on the outside so I'll be using stencils to paint.

By the way, the button layout was correct on the original panel.  Player two gets a white button.  P1 and fire are red.

Yes, someone else point me that on Klov forum. I'll have to swap two buttons  :P

I still have one of the two printed  ;)

I was about to ask if you would be interested in shipping it to the US, but I think I've found someone over here that can print this on adhesive vinyl.  Cost will be about $24 including shipping.
