Title: My first Stars Spalsh
Post by: Frame on September 28, 2014, 08:27:15 PM
Like I told I'm quite fresh news in the Arcade World.
All started this year in Jen when I come to know that the amusement machine of my infancy was "on the market".
Few month later, I had understood more knowledge about the cabs...and I slowly falling in love for Zaccaria.
I belive I never play on this cabs when I was child (my attentions was on the game inside, not for the cab) ..but 30 years later (now) I'm happy to discover this cabs produced in "my" '80 years.

On April I found an advertisement for a "stars spash" at about 200 Km far away from me.

Sorry to say: I have no documentation about this my first ZZZ road trip... about 2 hours of car to go and the same to came back.

During the pick up operation I discover this date on the bottom: (probably the production date?) 20.11.81

It's a generic cab, I know. Inside I found:
Brick: CEC 212
Power: Midway
Monitor: Hantarex 20"

..it's was cabled just for a Sega 16 pinout (Inside It's have the Shinobi's PCB).

..the control panel seems original (only 1 joy, and only 3 botton... quite rare in Italy! Usually Arcade renter's added a second joy more for upgrade to news game!)

..the woods structure in very good condition! (no vandalize act like intentionally sratch or lighter burning on side art...very rare in Italy!)
..all this data tell me this cab have always a good recovery in this long 30 years...and probably not too much employment.

Ciao Giulio. I'm sharing here, hoping in same new internetional friendship.

This was the conditions (read: PROBLEM)  that I have notice om the cab:

- monitor with strong dominant in blue color and red only in one corner (degauss?)
- Midway power: tested + 7v (insted of +5v)...12v it's okey (11.5 max..but this is not a problem I think)
- no "token dispensers" on the back of coin door.

Same consideration about the cab... it's a generic cab:

A- Cardboard is totally black (no theme "to support" in the cardboard)

B- Monitor was originally horizontal (wood bracket are tight...if they was for a vertical one I aspect it more larger)..not too much games was horizontal in 1981 I think... let me know what kind of game was horizontal and from midway..

Yeah, we have really good experiences with Ansaldo-Breda....is that the same factory we just sent our hi-speed Fyra trains back to ? :D

By the way, congrats on the cab and welcome here :)

Funny, that machine was made one day after I became 14 years old :)

Thanks 42! So: when arrive your birthday will be the same for my Cab..good reminder!

Update Cab's situation:

A- I'm not able to fix by myself th monitor problem. So in and of August I brought it to a repaiman that someone hint to me.
I'm just back home it same days ago...I'll try soon (this or next week) to re-attach all to test it!

B- Then I have the metal part to clean rust remove

C- About the cabinet (if someone can help me about):

I don't konw jet what exactly do:

1. Jamma (I need a second power supply for -5v)  or
2. dedicate to....what? So, for this questioon, I quote myself above:

B- Monitor was originally horizontal (wood bracket are tight...if they was for a vertical one I aspect it more larger)..not too much games was horizontal in 1981 I think... let me know what kind of game was horizontal and from midway..

Thanks

This configuration I've never seen before, with Midway internals. If only we knew what game it was originally...

and the board on the right of the power brick (actually power brick included, code cec212)

come from TRON. you can find them in the manual

Yeah, I was wondering if this might be a run of Tron in star form. That said, it could really be a run of any native (none-Namco) Midway game from around that time. There are a lot to choose from, but the control panel it looks like it was a joystick + two buttons. That said, the CP color is mismatched so the CP may have been swapped out at some stage. We may never know unless there is more evidence to go on...

Great find!

Paul.

Yes Paul, this is a mystery Stars....

I'm embarrassed about wiring to carry out... now it was converted in Sega16 pinout cause the game inside it was Shinobi.

The facts (power system, stereo speaker,  ecc..) told abut a Tron cab or better a Genric Zaccaria Cab ready for Midway's PCB probably..
..I'm wondering to know the business agreement between Zaccaria and Midway....about the distribution of the game in Europe/Italy...

I could say one detail more: the screen is (and was I belive) originally horizontal...no alteretion about position was made (Tron is vertical).

One more: the cab seem not place on Bar or GameRoom (not in Italy probably), cause don't recive any tipical sign of vandalization (lighter, cigarettes, penknife stratch...) that I always seen in all other Zaccaria Cabs (mine and others friend).
The original internal parts not removed (wood bracket at first, original fan ecc..) suggested me what above write.

Yes, the console don't correspond at original (was blu and cab is brown). I repaint it. I hold 1 joy and 3 button, probably.

...in short: it's an hard choice:

- Midway's power don't give me -5v. Add another power only for this it's a pity.
- Nobody will know exactly what run inside the cab

...a good compromise for me will be to wiring it in Jamma (but without -5V pinout) hold the same look as now it is (horizonatal monitor, 1 joy 3 button)...and collect same Midway PCB to run inside (I have one "Rally X"..)

I'm glad in your opinion about ...

No one wants to say it was a tron. It's ridiculous. I only mean parts of tron have been used.

Zaccaria made a few Lazarians also, it is a Midway game ;)

I don't think so. it's a zaccaria's game ;)

named Laser battle for Italian market and it had the typical zaccaria's power supply.
http://zaccaria.co.uk/download/file.php?id=87 (probably you have to login)

Lazarian had that midway power supply but made by Midway only (not midway/Zaccaria) and assembled into the midway cabs by Midway in the US

I couldn't find any picture or manual that doesn't support this thesis but everything is possible...

there is an interview made years ago to Natale Zaccaria. He told only few cabs were sold by midway but they paid all licenses (thousands) the same

Applying Occam razor I can say they assembled that cab with spares...

last month I picked up a Satan's Hollow distributed by Zaccaria. Either in that case cabinet was dedicated although everything inside was made by midway.

Bela,
I'll spend some holidays 200km far from you in a couple of days :) I'll visit bratislava
